Yew! Great to see some Escort action again. And yourself...... It's warming up in Oz coming into spring, so good timing to get me excited for my Mk1 2door..... 2.1L.. original body.😆
I built a 1600 crossflow up in the late 70s, used forged high com pistons, ported, balanced, big cam, tuned exaust and ballanced. Pulled in more hp than the 2ltr Mk2 I built after that. Have great memories of that Mexico Mk1 replica.
Refreshing to watch a video where someone doesn't subscribe to the "no replacement for displacement" mentality. This was an interesting one; keen to see the next one.
That sounds about right, just don't forget the strength and reliability mods like double chain maybe adjustable vernier. And maybe double valve springs. All expensive😅
It's the 711M block so squeeze all you can out of it. Getting a genuine 140 HP gets expensive, but 120 ish should be doable with a rebore, ported head, cam and twin 40s. Your red Mk2 on the Dreamcars stand at the recent Bicester show was exquisite... even the paint was good!😛
Good to see you back Paul, great video as always. Hopefully you can do some more videos and get Keith back as you guys had a lot of fun building cars. Anyone not subscribed please do so as this will help this channel grow to where it should be.
Not normally a fan of red for Escorts, but TRJ looks absolutely fantastic, especially with that unusual wheel choice😎👍🏻 The conventional resto car is a little gem too. Lovely work Sir😎👍🏻
Paul, just discovered your channel, and so happy I did. Thoroughly enjoyable presentation backed by loads of experience! From a new fan from Mexico! Keep producing such great videos.
Great video as usual mate and a good tip on the advert I didn’t know about that 👍🏻 don’t worry about the rebore at all the main thing is it will still have its matching numbers engine , look forward to the next video Paul
Bloody love your channel and good to see you back. As always love the solid engineering and no BS. I'd not get too stuck on being a 1600cc if a set of cheaper oversized pistons comes up then use them esp if its an AX block. Give the ol'gal a tickle with some engine tuning that don't cost the earth and is reliable. I've got a Golf GTI Clubsport but my Mk2 Escort and MK1 MX5 are more fun for a road blast even if the Golf is a 'Better car' . And no one had a standard Escort back in the day did they...its was part of the fun.
I bought a £50 draw ticket on this car to win it in your raffle, So pleased I didn't win it and you withdrew the draw, You've saved so much heartache and money for raffle buyers. Thanks.
Nice to see you adhering to the 5 second rule - chocolate hobnobs aren't for wasting! Nice idea on skipping the adverts, I'd also add that the Brave web browser skips all UA-cam ads as standard, so that's a good choice for those using a pc, Mac or Android or ios tablet or phone.
The biscuit drop was brilliant that’s me all over I’d never waste a hobnob not even if I dropped it in dog shite 🤣 I can’t believe these were only 85 HP ! Blimey my cheap ass toy of choice is a ford streetka 1.6 and that is supposed to have 95 lol ..how things changed so quickly! Brilliant vid Paul stick a big turbo on it mate that’ll make it jump into life 👍that’s what the kids do now 🤣
I'd probably have put a breathed on Zetec in there, kept the original crossflow for when you sell it and allow the new owner the option of reverting it back if they want to drive the original numbers matching car [e.g. for shows or something].
Cheers for the ad skip tip Paul 👍 I wouldn't worry about a slight overbore, wont make that much difference on displacement. Not sure if you can still get rimflow valves.. Would be ideal replacement with a port of the head.. Along with a cam and duplex chain 👌 look forward to seeing the next installment 👍
You can do the 1300 pistons for more compression, racing valves, ported head, balance pistons conrod weight and balance the crank shaft, lighten the fly wheel, a 6 cam, twin 40s or 45s, double chain electric ignition good exaust snd you will be hitting 140 plus hp
Great to see you back Paul. 75 of the 85 horses is poor mate. Great to see you investigating and remedying to get the old girl back up to speed (no pun intended). Shame I didn't know about the Mk 1 at auction would deffo have bought a couple of tickets and for the Mk 2 too.
Great video and look forward to seeing how you work out the Vol on cylinders to match new pistons and what the values are like when you strip the head down.
63 at the wheels is actually around 83 at the flywheel...you loose alot more than 12hp through the transmission, so dont be too hard on yrself. Be interesting to see the upgrades, cool car.
1100 pistons will give even more compression, to be honest they are probably what is used in the 1300 HC (GT Sport and 1300E). 0.030" rebore will take bore out to 81.75mm and wont have much affect on displacement, you'd have to bore to 0.100" or 2.5mm rebore from standard to get to 83.5mm which would give 1700cc or out to 85mm to get to 1760cc. If bores and valves are so bad it would be well worth a minimal crank grind and new shells and thrust washers, and a nice new HP/ high capacity oil pump, lightened flywheel, rebuilt distributor and 270 degree cam with some decent lift. While doing the head, would be worth new hard valve seat inserts and some bigger stainless race profiled valves 1.625" inlets and 1.340" exhausts, prperly blended vave throats and some nice new waisted bronze guides. As you said, with a pair of dcoe's and a 2" sports exhaust system, would make a lovely driving car, albeit a bit lacking in handling and brakes.
Had mine resleeved and fitted 1300 pistons with a stage 1 ported had and upgrade steel rockers kept the standard cam with 3236carb for daily driving has a noooice torque ban for mountain pass driving. Running type 9 with 3.9 final gears 1 and second is quick pull away with 3rd and forth being the mid long and 5th long so cruising 140-160km giving noooice power to chop some modern cars on the pass or twisty bends and short straights. Might in stall a uprated cam with bike carbs for future works. Base in cpt south Africa
Nice one Paul , I was diggin the dancing man 🤣 I can’t believe we used to think we had something special with 1.6 sport and it only had 75 HP lol you’d get that in a golf trolly now how things have changed huh? That’s a lovely car dude be a shame to modify to much everything’s modified now it’s nice to see um normal ish 😜👍
Nice Video Paul, I had a yellow mk2 sport back in the day but sadly rust got a hold of it badly, question how you putting on twin 40's sidedraft on with the brake booster arm being too high for the carbs to get over, I have that problem with my mk2 cortina gt with brake booster arm, still using 32/32 downdraft, cheers.
As the 1600 sport standard bore is actually slightly less than 1600 a plus 30 rebore won't take it much past 1600. I have plus 30 standard type pistons with a gas flowed head larger tube manifold and exhaust plus a K&N in my 1600 Sport.Had it rolling roaded and the twin choke re jetted so as not to melt another piston. Still drives nice and still gets up and go when I need it to and if I behave myself isn't to bad on fuel, until the second choke opens up.
Great to see you're back, 1100 Pistons are higher compression than 1300, but then they start getting heavy. Jus do what you did to the blue mk1 engine 👍
Great video Paul, I am simply in love with all your Escorts you had/have on this channel. This one is no exception. It's absoliutely stunning and enjoyed watching the build as well. Nice car mate but needs the proper wheels. Those look more like fwd ones as theres not enough of a dish on them. Luv the chanel and keep up the great work.
Love a 1600 Sport, I had the same scenario with my 1600 Ghia, was going to tune the xflow, but went with a pinto and high torque cam, pulls like a train without being too lumpy in traffic
I always removed the engine and gearbox as a unit much quicker refitting yes wellseal was a big thing back in the 70s used to work very well red Hermatight was another.
Is that an ex South Africa car? A lot of those imports seem to be 1600 Sport models. This reminds me of my old Mk2 Escort. Was same colour and even more gutless than that one. 🤣 Good memories though and fun to drive.
Looking forward to seeing this progress. Did you consider Jenvey Heritage Throttle Bodies, the ones that look like weber carbs? It'd likely be an easier engine to live with if it has EFI instead of carbs.
Go 1660 electronic ignition and fuel injection decent torque cam, lightened flywheel etc. I think you can get a single port injection for that manifold If memory serves me right or use a Ka injection manifold if it can be fitted will be allot more refined and user friendly and peppy. They are great engines I had a MK1 with a holbay built 1300 cc which was totaled during a rally stage by my late farther, put the engine and running gear into out MK2 escort service van it was fun lol. I understand the original qualities of keeping everything original but don't be scared to modernize the engine it's the same engine after all Webber carbs are great but not so much if the car sits for long periods of time they can and will be a pain especially with the shit fuel now days efi makes it user friendly just my opinion take care.
I honestly believe he's pretty capable of getting more power on his own no need to send it to Harris even though i agree Harris are absolutely brilliant
So much to say! Firstly, I had one of these in that colour, but without the full decals and just straight black seats. Secondly, I lived in a red Mk 1 1300 van for 8 1/2 months. (UTM 364 K) also, I later had a blue Mk2 with a 1600 sport engine in it (BUR 858 T) 😀 that Kent engine is iconic 😀 even made it into the MK1 XR2! Although this one is low on power, it seems to be getting a high percentage to the wheels. I’d expect more like 72%, but then that would mean well over 80 hp at the flywheel. I guess there’s a bigger loss of torque than power, with that cylinder issue, but that’s still a bit high. Finally, if you are going for twin 40s and a cam change, why not 1700, or at least 1650? Get as close to your MK1’s torque as possible 😁 by the way, is it still Kent cams and Burton heads? It’s been a long time… 😅 great video, please crack on, I wanna see it done 😂😂 🍿
Back in the 70's my late Father sold these, especially the 1.1 Pop and they had all the styling of a "Brick" They were "Aweful" with their blacked out Bumpers, and Nasty Plastic Front Grille. But, Hey, Stick a couple of Fog Lamps Up Front, and Lads would come in "Wetting the Knickers" over owning one. I Never saw their appeal, apart from the Rallye Lights", with a "Cossy" engine up front. Style wise, I would rather of had the "Toyota Celica" a kind of scaled down "Mustang" These old Escorts were a design disaster to the discerning eye. I Hated Them! Yet, my late Father sold hundreds of them.
Who sells wow seal never heard of it please give correct spelling I would like to try some on Austin engines. I'm saddened your selling your motors id be gutted if they were mine😪
It’s Stag Wellseal, just needs a thin layer on it. Yes getting rid of a few, got 40 something cars so thinking to just get that down to 1 or 2 nice ones.
that looks like water damage, where have you stored your car, in a shallow duckpond... in 1980, i was learning if you didn't get a shine on a pinto block, you weren't getting all the gasket off, which deserved a clip... do the maths with us excellent work, shit dancing, puddins fab shop is the home of the dance diva keep it up young man

Great to see you back, good tip on the ads too! I’m all over this! Gutter I missed the comp for the DC mk2
Look forward to next one gotta love simplicity of the mk2 ad trick worked too👌
The advert trick works a treat on the mobile !! Brilliant video BTW. 👍👍👍
Re-bore to 1700cc, twin 40’s, fast road cam, big valve head, lightened flywheel etc should up the bhp nicely 👌🏻
