  • This was a very simple project - nothing to it really, my previous idea was a piece of scrap on a piece of string and this is miles better!

Can’t believe you used that lovely finished bench top as a cutting board

“Dear Jim, can you fix it for me?” It’s a workbench, not a new born child, it’s made to be beat on… 🤷🏻‍♂️

Add a magnet to the end of wood so it clings to the holdfast and then you're really in business. Nice work!

. . . or just use contact cement to glue a 3 mm thick piece of leather to the face of the holdfast. Thanks for your time

Not everyone has leather laying around their workshop though.

I wish I could work out what works, that vid was like 2 years ago, I just watched it again and it reminded me of having some fun with the edit I'm pretty sure it was one vid I thought was one of my best edits but the film never made it anywhere. Dont get me wrong, its epic to hear ya words, someone tell'n you you did right - thank you for that!!! 🍻🍻🍻

Awesome! Not only is the idea great but the execution and craftsmanship are outstanding. (I cringed when you cut away the beautiful figure at the rounded end and kept the plain grain at the little end.)

Thank you David, nice of you to take the time to comment! Sometimes though, tools are just that, no point fussing over them imo, get on and make what ever with what ever serves the purpose, even a rule is great for squeeze out but you wont see me opening a tin of finish with my best chisels 😂 That hold fast wooden bit could quite easily end up in bits sooner or later from the blows from the mallet...

I was thinking about making a pair of those, but I wanted to see if I could make them so the wood doesn't twist around on the holdfast, any ideas?

Hi Assaf, hope youre well. I cant think of a way cause you need it loose cause of the nature of how the hold down works, I would suggest though if you make them I'd use the same grit you usually finish on like 220g for me, if you use 180 - 120 it will mar your work. Hope that helps.Kind regards,
      Ben.

Is there not a risk of the abrasive nature of the sandpaper marking your work piece when you release the hold-down ? I wonder if you could just use the wood on its own?

No not really, certainly not anything to be concerned about. I find with the added piece of wood between the holdfast and work piece there's more chance of things slipping, with out it theres a lot more work getting the dent out compared to the extra piece of wood with 180/120 grit paper, this is more evident when using only one holdfast which some situations call for.

How many pockets do you have?

That’s a lot of work, just use a small piece of wood under the tip of the dog.

…when you can have one permanently attached and not have to look for one.
