Pretty much reflected my experience with these tools. With one exception; there was (just) enough play in my t-square to set square again thankfully. The hooked on Wood guy claimed it was self setting. Couldn't help but call bullshit on that. And those type of drill guide bushes don't set square either. Looks lovely but a hard one to recommend for the money. Shouldve been black too! Router plane is next level though. Don't quote me on this but I think the rough black on veritas and the like is a treatment rather than a paint coat. Carbonised maybe? Sorry to hear times up on the workshop bud.
I was meaning to ask you does you’re really have slop in it, mine not even a fraction of movement to set it square, to be honest if it did I wouldn’t have confidence using it cause I’d have to be checking it every use when I can reach for one that I know is square 🤷🏻♂️
The body of the Veritas plane is made of ductile cast iron. This type of casting is suppose to resist any sort of movement/warpage etc. Therefor the rough surface on topis a result of it being cast.Liquid metal pour into a sand mold, after its cooled, the bottom is milled flat, and the top is rough. I would be interested to see what the dimensional stability of the steel plane is over time and whether it maintains it's "squareness" with the plane iron. I might be full of shite and have misunderstood the whole reason for using cast iron vs steel but that is my understanding of the process.
@@JimRimS4S The Hongdui uses die steel. Die steel is super durable, has good corrosion resistance and importantly, is stable under temperature changes. It's temperature changes that can cause warpage in other steels. Die steel is what they use to stamp and form other metals, sometimes under extreme heat so, it needs to be stable. The main downside in using it for a router plane (or any plane) body is, if the base wasn't flat, it would take an age to flatten it with the kit in moat workshops. It has to be milled flat from the get go. It should stay that way once it is. The rough back on the veriras is from casting but, I'm unsure if the black is a coat (Like a matt paint) or a treatment.🤷♂️👍
@@BischBaschBosch It'd just a paint like any other cast iron plane body.I didn't think about how hard it would be to lap or flatten a steel plane using the tools that the average hobbies has at hand. I hope they have good QC. I know that the Veritas castings are allowed to sit for up to a year before machining to let it "settle"into its long term shape. I'd be interested (as a tool nerd) to see what the long term stability of this kind of steel is in a year or two. I did not know anything about die steel so thanx for the info
@@JimRimS4S Guess we'll find out in 20 years😁 To be honest, for die steel, a router plane is an easy life. Some dies stamp parts millions of times per day for years. Might be different in a hand plane as frogs and plates introduce twist forces. I suspect more manufacturers don't use it due to cost.
Great info on the tools Ben. Sorry to hear about your workshop. I hope they will either let you stay or you can find another one without too much grief.
I purchased my T-square before I saw your video and I suppose I must be lucky because mine is dead nuts accurate. It’s also locked tight with no room for adjustment. Sounds like they have some real quality control issues.
I looked at the nice looking T "square" back when it was released a few months ago as a retirement present to myself. A multi function tool does take up less room and if you want both tools at the same time it would speed things up. But you still have to consider the cost and individual tools from known manufacturers appeared to be cheaper when added together. I did not the extra features and since it appears to be overpriced bought a plain 760mm Veiko T square which is square for £20. But I still needed a retirement present to myself and bought the KM router plane for £118.96, shipped from China rather than US so cheaper maybe because only one journey. Also had plenty of machine oil on it and the paint finish is not flat. looking forward to using when I have finished my summer chores.
Jeeze man sorry to hear about the shop issue. Hopefully you can come to a swift and favourable resolution with the new owners. If it all goes to shit you can move to Devon and use my shop if ya want. It's got lots of tools that I don't really know how to use so you could teach me how to use them properly and stop me from screwing things up so often.
Cowgirl and reverse Cowgirl had me laughing my ass off 😂. Love the way you describe the tool Ben 😂😅. What's the situation with your workshop 🤔 are the new owners wanting you out?🤔🤯
I’ve no idea, I only found out it’s been sold by chance. I need to see what my rights are too none of them have any way of contacting me nor even know who I am, it’s a mess.
@HewAndAwe o shite that not good, I hope you have the opportunity to stay put. Surely you would think the original landlord should have told you about the potential sale of the barn.
@simonr6793 yeah I knew about the sale dude. But as the barn was in the hands of the liquidators all info is only between them and the person who bought it.
@@HewAndAwe in that situation Ben the new owners will have been told there was a sitting tenant in the barn. I hope they don't issue a repossession order through the court's.
I was shocked to see that, the fact I didn’t check it for square straight out of the box showed how confident I was it it, just goes to show you can polish a turd.

To get rid of pauses “um’s and ahrrs” etc. The above vid would have been 2 hours long otherwise. I’m also dyslexic and things get muddled somewhere between my mouth and brain.
Sorry to hear about the workshop Ben. Hope you can find somewhere soon.
Such as life mate… it’s all a big mess 😬
Great content as usual with a twist of humor adds to the good vibes of the channel..Thanks..

I’m working on it dude, lots to do, gonna be quiet for a bit for sure… 😔
@HewAndAwe good luck bud. Hope it all ends well.
The marking T square is $204.97 here in Australia, which is 105.77 quid.
That doesn’t really mean a lot to me, it’s not right to look at it like that 204 And 104 cause cost of living is different in each country.

It’s a bloody good plane, for half the price of the high end tools it’s a 100% no brainer.

Hi Ben, I'm curious - what do you do for a living?
I swear you are the best stand up comedian I've heard so far. 💯 👍
He's one of the best high end furniture makers I've ever seen in the UK. Aswell as a content creator

Well poop 💩. Moving will be a hassle...best of luck mate. Hope you find a new space quickly
Yeah it’s worse than moving home dude! 🥺
I’ve got the router plane and really rate it but the blades are a bit of a pain to sharpen
Yeah they always are it seems doesn’t matter which version you have.
Bloody hell watching your video just cost me over $350. I hope there as good as you said they are or I won’t be happy Jan.

Hello
Howzit?
I have one too they are shit. They is too much movement in the actual square.

Oh! So you have movement and I don’t I can’t get it to square at least you can, but saying that I can’t be arsed checking tools every time I use them.
Why do all your videos look like AI created them based on the large amounts of broken frame and editing. Just wondering, not hating.
