  • How To Wire Flowers For Corsage And Bridal Work
    In this video we were asked to show how to wire flowers - so here is a selection of flowers that would be used regularly to create corsages, headdresses etc - in fact any design that needs wired flowers! Sometimes we forget why we wire flowers - well it’s to create a flower or leaf on a false stem that be manipulated to create a design that couldn’t be created using material in its natural form, generally because the stems will break or aren’t flexible. So now you know, let’s have a go!
    Ingredients - different flowers including spray roses, large headed roses, carnations, cymbidium orchids and alstroemerias

    The wires we use are as follows -
    The very thin rose wire .28 gauge
    The slightly thicker rose wire .26
    The stub wire - .24
    And the longer flexible green wire is .22 gauge
    Hope that helps!

    Hi , just came across your Utube channel , just what I’m looking for it’s great …
    Just wanted to know when could you wire up these flowers for wedding center pieces .. could you do the evening before to make up the arrangements the next morning ?

    • @FlowerJoos

      Hello - thank you! 😀
      Wired flowers can be made up the afternoon before - but for table centres that will be a lot of work, both the day before and on the day to assemble. These tend to be for corsage work and bridal bouquet work. I’m intrigued what your table centre designs are!

    Wonderful video. I was curious however what a "buttonhole" means exactly. Not sure if it's just a floral term I don't know or if it's a regional difference and it might mean "bout" or "boutonnière" as we Americans say. Thanks again for the great tips!

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  6 років тому +1

      Holly Allen I think you are right with a regional difference - here in Scotland we would call a buttonhole a single flower general for a man, for going on their suit jacket. Jackets used to have buttonhole hole on the left lapel for the flower to go through.
      A ladies version is more like.y to be more than one flower and would be a corsage. Buttonaire is very French sounding!

    Can you wire a rose for a bridal bouquet to look like it still has its stem

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  2 роки тому +1

      Wiring allows total flexibility to place the rose head where you want it, as well as removing any danger of the rose head being snapped off as they a little bit at risk on their natural stem.
      You can do two things - keep the rose on it’s stem and wire lower down, or wire and tape it as in the video then thicken the stem with tissue paper, then retape to hide the tissue. That will thicken the stem but keep the benefits of wiring 😀

    Very interesting lesson! Thanks for sharing. I have a question. Does the cymbidium orchid flower wiring do the same as the large rose and whole carnation wiring? Thank you.

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  2 роки тому

      Thank you! Yes, a cymbidium is best with a firm wire up the stem into the neck of the head, and then a wire through the very back of the head and brought down parallel to the stem.
      Be careful not to just go across the top of the stem only - it is slightly weaker here and can snap - so your orchid head will be loose and fall of the internal wire.
      I hope that makes sense! 😀🙋🏼‍♂️

    How are these things kept hydrated (from wilting) if used in a wedding?

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  2 роки тому +1

      The best advice is making them on the day they are needed - or the night before. But the material should be in good condition, and well hydrated, and after making the design it needs to be kept cool and in an area with good humidity - so in a bag with a bit of space or in a box.
      As the stems are cut they can’t get more water so it’s all about water loss prevention 😀

      @@FlowerJoos Thank you! I’ve been asked to do a swag for an arch that will be in full sun for a couple hours, using blue hydrangeas and white Lisianthus. I’m a back yard fresh cut flower farm NOT a florist! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  2 роки тому +1

      @@stephaniewarren9285 your best advice is to try and provide a water source - so you could make a tied base if well hydrated foliage in advance ( then bag it in big bags to keep it overnight ) and then add in the flowers on the day - ideally in tubes, if you want to avoid foam.
      It depends on the arch - you might be able to attach jars for more water and then hide these with foliage

    Hi. Can I please ask a question. If you want the flower to be in some wet oasis, can the flower still get water up the stem with the tape on it. Could it just be taped at the top so the stem is still,open at the end? Thanks. Sorry for being dim lol.

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  5 років тому +1

      Sue Lodge I am not sure what design you are thinking off - for buttonholes and corsages you can put them together like a little tied bunch - tape to hold and leave in water until necessary. For designs in foam then you can wire the flowers for support or to manipulate, and this could be taped or not - as long as the stem goes into the foam the flower will be fine. The tape is to hide any wire, but a wired flower within other material may not need tape as you wouldn’t see the stem anyway. 🙋🏼‍♂️

    • @suzeblahblah
      @suzeblahblah 5 років тому +1

      Yes that answers the question. I just wanted to know if the tape prevented water getting into the stem if you wanted to use the taped and wired method and then put into oasis for a bouquet. I probably didn't word the question very well. Thanks so much for your help.

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  5 років тому

      Sue Lodge as long as the tape doesn’t cover the bottom of the stem then it’s good to go into water or foam 😀

    • @FlowerJoos
      @FlowerJoos  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you 😀
      With corsage work you can make it up in advance - the afternoon before is ok. Then mist lightly with water, place under some loose plastic and place somewhere cool - on a tile floor or in a fridge is possible. Then just box up the next day as needed - you can resist then.
      But foliage can be made earlier - so harder leaves like ivy, ruskus, eucalyptus - these will all keep for a few days - just pop in a Tupperware dish on-top of damp tissue , or into a zip bag, and keep cool as before.
      You can also prep any extras - the box, the pins, any ribbon and create the set needed for putting it together - this saves a lot of time.
      Hope that helps 🌼😀

      Kristan Howard-Cooper we posted the wire gauges in the comments below. It’s one of those things where you can use different wires fir each flower - it depends what you are doing and want to achieve. The best advice is to get the feel of the wires and which you prefer.
