Yay! Glad you're revisiting the occult detective realm. OCCULT DETECTIVE MAGAZINE is always a delight. Our local library has SOME of the British Library Tales of the Weird volumes, but alas and however, not THE GHOST SLAYERS. But, Huzzah! It does have Paula Guran's WEIRD DETECTIVES tome. Stephen Jones' DARK DETECTIVES volume is quite entertaining. I really look forward to your shelf tour and for the reviews to begin.
Hi Roy, What a delightful and informative video. I learn from everything you produce but this one was just fabulous. I had never heard of "Mysteries of Myra" but I'm adding it to my ODO list. Occult Detectives are such fascinating cultural figures at play in the converging worlds of fears and desires with imagination unfettered and always on the wild side. This October gathering of different perspectives is going to be a revelation. Nicely done!
I am looking forward to delving more into this genre. Between everyone involved there has been so many great suggestions for what to read. I’m very excited for this event!🔎📚
Excellent video, sorry I didn't notice it earlier. I look forward to taking part, and have chosen a handful of books for my tbr. I would love to sample the Occult Detective Series but I have to be selective on what I purchase at the moment. Mysteries of Myra sounds very interesting.
MYSTERIES OF MYRA, which sounds fun, is out of my price range. I have all the Seabury Quinn books and a copy of FIGHTERS OF FEAR. So, I'm set. Looking forward to it.
Can't wait to learn of more occult authors! I enjoy the Lockwood & Co series by Jonathan Stroud, the Dresden files by Jim Butcher and the new unorthodox series by James J Butcher. I need to get more into the classics. I look forward to your reviews!
Oooooo I have The Library of the Dead on my wishlist. I've heard a couple of good reviews. It's the Edinburgh setting that appeals to me. Interested to hear what you think of it.
Nice. I'm looking forward to this because I need some guidance in finding occult detective stories that just aren't Cthulhu mythos related. Most of the modern stories I see that skirt the genre end up becoming more of the occult warrior than detective (the crossover of Occult Detective with Urban Fantasy is puzzling to me). I just don't know where to look for good stuff
Little Did She Know...that's a bit of a creepy coincidence. I finally got a Kindle because I've gotten to the point where I have no room for any more physical books. Meandering through their offerings, I bought several that would fit quite naturally into Occult Detective October. But I won't Reveal All until then...
gosh, how have I never heard of Occult Detective Magazine, I need to check that out!
It's a really good magazine

It's going to be great, I can feel it in my bones!

I'm really looking forward to your insights into the real-life spiritualism and occultism aspects
Really looking forward to this event. Love your suggestions 😊

Yahoo! This event was made for you! 👏🏻👏🏻 🔮✨it’s going to be an amazing month. So happy to have you as a co-host. ☺️
I’m so excited for this event. Also looking forward to getting ideas from other folks. My list keeps growing and growing.
Me too, it's like those fractal diagrams that keep forking and forking
Your wife cackling in the background at your use of ‘nether regions’ to describe the user pov of captions was wholesome and hilarious.
Thanks!

That's a great set to have!
Have a great time reading, may you enjoy all of them. That is cool about Mysteries Of Myra (viewing and/or reading).
Thanks - yes I've never come across the viewing/reading combo before

Thanks, it should be a fun event
This sounds like such a fun genre! Can’t wait to get into this and find some new authors!
There are some great ones

The Edinburgh setting should be great, I know it well enough to visualise in part. Will report back!
I have seen many videos about this event and originally was going to take part, but after watching your video, you have given me some ideas 🎉
Ah that's good 👍
Oooh, Library of the Dead looks interesting!
Turns out Jennie already had it on Kindle - doh!
@@royreadsanything ha! Whoops

I'm sure that some good non-mythossy possibilities will surface
Interesting stuff. Do you think a belief in the occult is necessary to get the most enjoyment from this genre?
I don't think so, as there is the mystery aspect

Excellent!
Do you think it will be done again this October (2024)?
I hope so
if you could recommend just one book to me for this event, what would it be?
ill join in, but only have space for one book, can be longish
I'll have a think. Novel or short stories?
@@royreadsanything hmmmm, i think id prefer a novel first
thank you tons!
Ben Aaranovitch 'Rivers of London'
is popular, I'll be reading it - Jennie likes it
@@royreadsanything then thats for me!!
appreciate you both!
Surely the most popular modern occult detective is Harry Dresden?
You could try out some Dresden Files 🤷🏻♂️
Yep, one I've never read indeed
