I’m new to your channel, don’t remember how I stumbled across it, but I just love your quirky self. I now regularly watch your show while drinking my morning coffee. You are obviously intelligent with a wild imagination and your humble, self deprecating humor is just delightful. You have introduced me to some authors/books I wasn’t familiar with and am stretching my reading world thanks to you. I suspect, however, that Roger might not have your best interests at heart. He seems a bit shady to me. Stay delightfully weird, it makes the crap that invades the days more tolerable.
I love your "dumb" videos. There's nothing wrong with ending a reading challenge if it really isn't working out / is stressing you out. Life is like that sometimes!
Hah! Instead of indulging in Roger's predictable murder-oriented plan, why not use the time machine to go back to 1989 and make the 500-book challenge then? So you have to read 500 books - starting in 1989 - before you buy another one - in 2023. You've already done that a few times over!
Oh I thought the Weekend Reading Report was being held to nearer the end of the month as its a whole month of Cimmerian delights. On the subject of occult detectives, The Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin vol 1 is returning to print and back in shops this December. That time travel plan is hinkier than Mr Jinx, it can't end well. Whats Roger upto? has he gone mad from lack of pocket money? Stick to reading 500 Books, its healthier.
Great video! I'm just worried that you might run into problems with the time machine plan when your current self, who travels back in time to murder your previous self, comes back to the current time and you go back again to murder your previous self again, and you're trapped in a time loop! Check with Roger (since it's his time machine) to make sure this won't happen!
You don't need to kill your younger self, you just have to convince him that he shouldn't do it. And if you can't talk to yourself because of time laws, Roger can do the convincing. You just will have to stay near, hidden, to make sure Roger doesn't go back to the first plan.
I NOTICED! I had a hole in my Sunday not listening to the Weekend Reading Report, but hey, life happens. I figured something was up. I am glad it was nothing ba,. I am also glad that you dropped the 500 book challenge. Murder, though...can't you just dissuade younger Michale not to bite off more than you can chew? THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS! THERE ARE FIVE SERIES! No new Star Trek enters this house.
You must read The Mabinogi ! Many fantasy tropes are based on Celtic Myths. I still love Children's books and adore Alan Garner who intermingles myth and reality in the historical Celtic landscapes(in local areas to him). Check out Norse myths too; again much used in modern fantasy. You are so refreshing Michael ...even in whitering mode..ha!😊
Indeed, I noticed the lack of the weekend reads video but, when I saw a video the next day, I figured it was either a time thing or a lack of finishing thing. Sorry to hear the week has been crummy for you, too! I'm ready for next week to get here so I can forget all about this one. Time travel is the best, isn't it? I look forward to a haul of adventure this weekend or next week!
You might recall a comment I made to one of your videos. I explained that a new Algernon Blackwood book was available: Shocks! Eglantine books. At the end there is an intriguing exchange of letters between Blackwood and a lady he was assisting in a psychic investigation. I have a copy of a new collection of his stories: Algernon Blackwood Horror Stories. Flame Tree. It seems strange that Blackwood is so little talked about. BTW, the Oxford World's Classics paperback of M R James is really brilliant.
I love your sense of ethics, that would choose to murder yourself to avoid a promise to yourself, rather the break said promise. But...if a paradoxes don't get you, or the universe, deleted...won't you still remember making the promise?? His Dark Materials _is_ fantastic.
Thank you, Michael! I laughed several times. Loved the thumbnail. What they have done to Spock is a disgrace. They have taken this character who happened to have the most dignity on the show and made him an idiot. He has been been relegated to comic relief.
As someone who grew up watching the original run of Star Trek on a 27- inch black & white TV, and has been a lifelong Trekker, I respectfully disagree with your characterization of Spock on the new ST shows. He is younger and has a journey before he gets to be the Spock of TOS. But by no means is portrayed as an "idiot". Nor is he portrayed as "comic relief"'.
@@buckocean7616 Respectfully, we all have our opinions. This is mine. I watched them during the original run. The Spock if this age would never ever say “I want the ship to go!” Just to engage the engines. I’m sorry but the way he’s treated on the bridge and his interactions with the other crew are absurd. He’s shown no respect for his intellect or scientific ability.
@@stevezeidman7224 I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I think you're cherry -picking scenes to support your opinion but leaving out the trauma that introduced Spock in ST Discovery. I couldn't disagree with your last sentence more emphatically! So it goes.
I like weekend reading report! I like just about all of your videos. I'm not a huge fan of comic books, yet I've listened to almost all of them while driving to or from work. I love listening to you talk about things. Thanks for the videos Michael!
No need for murder. Let Roger use his magical mummy power of mesmerization to edit your memory. Turn the 500 into 100 (it was just a clerical error/slip of the tongue) and you are in the home stretch. Problem solved.
I love the weekend Reading Report video, might be my favorite videos, besides the Conan ones! Just rarely comment when I see one missing since I know how a crazy schedule at work can overwhelm you.
I don't know if you are aware of this, but - though T H White's _The Once and Future King_ (TOaFK) includes the much better known _The Sword in the Stone_ (TSitS) as the first part of a sequence of four, this book, TSitS, also exists as a stand-alone version, which I think is the original, and it is bigger, and has more and different episodes, than the cut down and altered version in TOaFK and is, imo, better (more atmospheric, less didactic) than the omnibus version. So it's worth looking out for the stand-alone TSitS if you can get it. Furthermore, the biggest change in the omnibus version of TSiTS is that it includes two episodes that were originally written for _The Book of Merlin_ (TBoM). But since that book then did not get published (until long after White's death) what he then did was to insert those episodes into TSitS when it was included as part of TOaFK, because he felt they were so important for the whole Moral Theme of the overall story. So if you read TOaFK and then TBoM there will come a point when you find yourself going, "Hang on! Didn't this stuff happen already?" Whereas, if you read the stand-alone TSitS, then parts 2, 3 and 4 of TOaFK and finally TBoM you will not notice any duplication of events. To be honest, I like TSitS a lot more than the rest of TOaFK. TOaFK is very good and absolutely an essential fantasy work, but I think it gets a bit weird and preachy in parts. TSitS is rather weird as well, but in a good way, while TOaFK is weird in some good and some bad ways, imo. I look forward to hearing what you think of it, when you get there.
I'm still in the first volume of Conan, but the People of the Black Circle is a real favorite. In fact, the three longer tales in that second volume are, in my view, some of the strongest of Howard's Conan. I can't wait to get back to them. A humble occult detective suggestion. I believe you own Wagner's Why Not You and I? Try a reread of one of the stories, Sign of the Salamander, which qualifies easily and is a lot of fun. I know Roger only wants the best for this channel, but if you carry out his plan, next week's videos may end up being hosted by Christopher Lloyd.
You may not think we missed the weekend reading report, but we did. If your time travel experiment is successful, I’ll be sad to see the 500 book challenge go. Regardless of however long it would take, I think it’s a noble goal. I’m looking forward to your intro video on Occult Detective October. I JUST finished my Garbaugust reading last night! I’m soooo behind where I want to be, but I did finish two books already this week, and I expect to finish two more before the end of the weekend….
Hi Mike...I could never do a 500 book challenge, it would take me like 7years to complete...and that's way to long for this guy not to buy new books lol..
For Occult Detective October you could read some occult detectives in comics like Hellboy and John Constantine:Hellblazer. I also don't see a flaw in your time travel plan. It seems very solid and reasonable to me, good luck with it! I did notice the missed reading report. I do look forward to them and especially your Sunday comics, but completely get that life sometimes happens and has to take priority. Hope you are feeling better!
Hm. Not that a dead mummy would disregard the importance of your status as a LIVING being… but the repercussions of killing your younger self might very well rope you into that treacherous predictament often referred to as “suicide”. I mean, it’s somewhat possible…
We noticed but thought you needed the time off. There are too many booktubers who burnt out trying to keep up with reading, projects and filming. Time resists being changed. Be careful you don't erase yourself.
... but, what will happen to the MKV's in the timelines where you do finish the 500 book challenge if you don't first travel in to the future to check that you finished it? I think they will judge you, form a society to preserve their collective instinct to survive as a stronger, better MKV. Is Roger not you your self?!! - your remains after the 500 book challenge sucks the life out of you, preserved by the future returned MKVsoc to maintain it's continuity? Crom! We are witness to ritual - the ghost of a madman talking to his corpse to preserve his futures!
If we don't seem not to miss a video it's not owning to a lack of interest but a realization that you have a life outside UA-cam BookTube. Life doesn't take our plans and schedules into consideration.
So what you and Roger really need to do is use the Time Machine and go back in time and purchase the books that you want before the challenge was issued, so technically you purchased them before which would make them books you already own. 🤔😁 OR… (if the Time Machine is not working) I think the 500 book challenge should just tally books you had already owned when you made it. Then continue to buy new books and read them and just only count previously owned books.
It sounds like Roger's plan to take over the show. Well, just maybe he'd look good under the fedora. Don't do it . Jack still laughing PS Use the time machine and make it Roger's read 500 books before buying more. Problem solved.
I wont be sad to forget about it BUT...can you first try gently shaking your younger self on the shoulders while yelling "Don't do it!" I can see it now. Im walking down the road, pondering; didnt I used to watch a guy with a hat and a mummy? Shaking my head dismissively and walking away.
"Like a well oiled machine", you say? Obviously I never knew what that saying meant. And you should be ashamed for not reading those books. Unfortunately, I'm not sure you are sufficiently ashamed. And by the way, don't come back and ask me if I've read those books. That would be so rude. You are better than that (I think). You mentioned having a terrible week. Well what has been going on? All of us out here in flyover country aren't callous. Much respect from Larry. Keep up the good work.
I would like to ask Rogger if he really has thouhgy that plan thrugh, because... who will take the place of your present self, if you are taking over for your younger self ?🤔 ROGGET! What are you up to ?!? 😡
If you choose to end your involvement in the 500 Book Challenge Michael, then simply do it but for Kang's sake do not tamper with time! Have you learned nothing from your daily comics reading? It never ends well. By the way, how did Roger acquire his time machine? Not through Doctor Doom's used time machines I hope, he only sells those dodgy Von Daniken models. So true, REH's writing has a timeless quality which makes it entertaining no matter how often you read the stories. There are a number of excellent BBC adaptations of MR James stories on UA-cam. I enjoy James' stories quite a lot but find that I can only read a couple in each sitting. I think they would work very well as he originally intended them to be read, one at a time out loud to a group of friends on a cold night, with fine cheeses and wines.
In my opinion: anything 40k or over is a novel. Not a long novel, but still a novel. A "perfect novelette," in my opinion, would be Of Mice and Men. It's approx. 30k, lean and well structured. Look at how slim most modern novels were before the late 70s/early 80s. Most of what's being churned out now (especially by Indies, trying to get page reads) is bloated. And in fantasy (sword & sorcery), forget it. Readers expect at least an epic that will stop an armor-piercing round. Anyway, sorry for the rant.
I'm sure Roger would tell you if, oh I don't know...let's say hypothetically, killing your younger self would then mean you don't exist. He wouldn't let that happen so don't sweat it.
Let’s reflect on how to avoid murdering younger self and risk disturbing the time line, a step potentially worse than new incarnations of Star Trek. Academic scholars have to keep up on the literature of their chosen field, to not keep up is dumb. You are a specialist- a sort of academic - in certain literary areas, and so not to keep up in said broadly defined areas would be counterproductive and hence dumb. So…no new books in areas not in your broadly defined specialisation. But in the interests of your profession books related to your specialisation/s broadly defined should not count. Much better than risking a disrupted timeline. 😀
Dont you dare stop now !! Don't do it !! I will go back in time and throttle the infant Roger to foil your plans. And think about the logic of you giving up - so you can buy some silly kids fantasy novels to your TBR ? Tsk tsk tsk tsk. If it was sports and war genre books, or engine manuals, then by all means, go ahead 🤭🤭
Well, I noticed there wasnt' a Weekend Readign Report...but I don't think any of you (or Roger's) fans are going to bug you about it. We all know silly things get in the way of even the most important videos from time to time. Speaking of Roger, I don't know, but between us, I feel like this plan of his might be a scheme to permanently replace you on the channel. I think we all love Roger, but maybe you should watch your back. Also, expect many videos about time travel paradoxes to appear in the future. Also also, I don't claim to know anything about anything, but speaking of essential fantasy, there's one I know you do own (because you mentioned it on the channel before as something you wanted to read) that I didn't notice in your fantasy video...Jack Vance's Tales of the Dying Earth! I was excited at the prospect of you getting to it someday. Finally, and I know this comment is getting long, but I just wanted to say that everyone has to read at their own pace and that's really for the best. I think one can only read too slowly when there are deadlines involved, and once there are deadlines, things like doing a youtube channel about books probably become less fun. I will say that there is one thing I sort of miss from your channel, and that's videos about specific books. While I do enjoy all the videos, the Weekend readign Reports, and so on, I think it's the videos about specific books that first attracted me to this channel, because I looked at your videography (is that a word?) and got excited to check out your thoughts on specific books I knew. I am not certain, but I think these types of videos probably help a channel to grow, too, since people tend to "get to know" a youtube presenter by checking out videos based on the things they know. I see all these youtubers that are new to me, and their video titles are all kind of generic things like "Weekend Book haul", "What I read in September", etc, which is fine if one already follows them and likes them, but doesn't exactly inspire new people to click on a video. And since I already know and like your videos, sometimes i want to know your thoughts on a specific book, and in order to find them, I look for that specific video. i did this recently with your video on 'Darker Than you Think" by Jack Williamson. I wouldn't have been able to find it if it was "buried" in a weekend reading report. I must stress that I'm not trying to tell you how you should do your channel, but just offering a thought. I would be3 happy with fewer videos if it meant you would be able to record more videos in this format.
You shouldn't kill yourself... that's very dangerous. Why?... I can't put it here... but i am an expert in time traveling myself and i have a timemachine. I could bring you back further in time, so you can get rid of the whole challenge. The challenge will never even exist if you do what i say. But it's too risky to put here... Also... be careful with Roger... i have the feeling he wants to go back in time so much at the time he was still alive. It could go horribly wrong if you let him. 😜
Your dopey posts are the best dopey posts in booktube world.

I would like to ask Rogger if he really has thouhgy that plan thrugh, because... who will take the place of your present self, if you are taking over for your younger self ?🤔
ROGGET!
I think Roger did steal it from Doctor Doom.
A nice 23 minutes.
Hey, buck up! 71 is nothing to sneeze at!
Details getting hazy.... Must buy 500 books before I finish one...?
Dont you dare stop now !! Don't do it !! I will go back in time and throttle the infant Roger to foil your plans. And think about the logic of you giving up - so you can buy some silly kids fantasy novels to your TBR ? Tsk tsk tsk tsk. If it was sports and war genre books, or engine manuals, then by all means, go ahead 🤭🤭
The Once and Future King is great, but do not read The Book of Merlin, White abandoned it for very good reasons ( imo )
You are right, I need to do individual reviews. And I don’t know why I forgot about Dying Earth. I need to add that to the shelf.
I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's weird and adventuresome and full of wizardsa nd rogues and strange creatures.@@michaelk.vaughan8617
😜
Yes, I agree with you. Rogger is deffenatly up to something shady thiz time 🤔😉
The new Star Trek shows are bad!
