ERRATA:
38:00 During the Battleshock Tests, the footage of the Cultists and Legionaries rolls were accidentally swapped in the editing process. To reiterate, you pass (and are safe) by rolling ABOVE your leadership value, and fail (become battleshocked) by rolling UNDER your leadership.
The two "Twin Linked" rerolls on the Flying Hive Tyrants weapons were performed incorrectly. The entire roll is not considered "the attack", each individual dice is considered a unique attack. You can decide whether to reroll for each individual dice. Why the rules writers didn't just say "Twin Linked: re-roll failed wound rolls" is beyond me. Why write 7 words when 100 will do, eh?
Thanks for watching! If there are any rules or situational stuff that you still feel uncertain about, drop a comment below and I'm sure some kind Warhammer 40k expert will be glad to point you in the right direction!

It's finally here! As someone who just got into Warhammer, tyvm!
The leadership test thing appears to be backwards, you pass if the 2d6 is above the leadership
I do have a question though, Guy. Where _is_ Mrs. Witch?!
Regarding Twinlinked, I'm guessing it's because you can choose to reroll a successful wound in hopes of getting a 6 to trigger devastating wounds. Maybe?
Regarding the feel no pain, you have to roll for each failed save separately right? Because if you rolled two successful 6+ against the first failed save then it technically would have only killed one legionary. 56:45
Been playing warhammer for about 3 years now and yet I will still watch this whole video.
29 and counting here 🎉
@@plasticdeath31 I hope I get to that many one day!
Started in 5th, still wanted every second. Worth it.
Played 2nd when I was young, buy trying to start up again after a long hiatus
A small error you made: To pass a battle-shock test, you must be OVER the Ld value on the datasheets, not below like in 9th edition. Therefore, the cultists would not be battle shocked but the chaos marines would have at 38:00
Great video tho! Keep up the good work!
For both leadership and battleshock to succeed you need to roll over, its the exact same roll, but called something different as to not affect CSM with other penalties for failing dark pacts. Hence why Abbadon has a LD of 5, and cultists have an LD of 7.
I was thinking the same thing and watched that big twice just to make sure i wasn't mis-understanding it!
Yeah watched that part twice as well, to see if i was misunderstanding something.
I beliieve what happened is that they accidentally siwtched the clips.
by the looks of it and the narration, i reckon he mixed up the edit on the dice rolls, and they should have been the other way round.
You forgot step one: sell both your kidneys and take out a mortgage...
Don’t forget both your arms & legs too!
Yeah but how do I afford the second 1000 points?
Idk
Don’t I guess
40k is the second cheapest nerd hobby to get into sans Pokémon.
I am just getting into 40K and having such a clear and straightforward explanation of the rules is a lifesaver! Thank you so much for doing this!
Your welcome, now wipe my arse
Slight clarification on Twin-Linked, it does not require you to re-roll all wounds. The wording states "Each time an attack is made with such a weapon, you can re-roll that attack's wound roll." When attacking with a weapon, each dice is considered its own attack, and rolling them all together is referred to as fast rolling. That means that you only need to re-roll the failed wound rolls, however the rule does state that it can be any wound roll, not just failed ones, which is intended to leave open the option to re-roll a successful wound if you're looking instead for a critical wound for the sake of devastating wounds.
Honestly fast rolling probably deserved its own clarification, it's often taken for granted by people because its done so often that it muddies interpretations of the rules, even with experienced players it seems. For instance you shouldn't fast roll when making feel no pain rolls for several models, as it needs to be clear before you roll which dice are for which model.
Also the rules are pretty unambiguous when it comes to "when a model is leading a unit". The rulebook clarifies that once a character in a combined unit loses its bodyguard it is no longer considered a combined unit and the character and bodyguard are considered separate units from that point forward, therefore any abilities that specify "when this model is leading a unit" are no longer usable once the bodyguards have been destroyed.
Well reasoned

Tip: USE PRINTOUTS IF YOU JUST WANNA PLAY
as someone who's really only into the modelling and painting side, but has thought about getting into the game proper a number of times, intro vids like this are very helpful. I still glaze over when confronted with stuff like 5+ different stats to express weapon strength and damage resistance, but y'know... probably a reason for it I just don't grasp yet.
Don't worry, I felt the same when I was learning too... NOW LOOK AT ME! Haha
THANKS GUYS! Ive been watching and reading lore for 2 years and Im ready to start playing. This has helped me understand so much more about what types of minis to choose and weapons to pick for them. Its really inti idating to see how complex the rules for this game are but you have helped me get more of a grasp on things.
Bro one of the main reasons I got so hyped over 10th edition was cus I knew this video was gonna come out. I love your how to play’s
An amazing, simple easy to follow introduction to the 40K game we know and love. I especially appreciate the chapter section for easy reference! Thanks Guy!
I love all your "How-to-play" games and your battle reports. They might have the occasional missed rulling, but they are by far the easiest to follow and the most entertaining to watch!!! Love your content!!!
Great video, though a small correction:Twin-linked does not mean that you reroll all the dice in the wound roll. Instead, it means that you reroll all 'failed' dice.
Yup! Good spot. It would be great if it just used that wording in the rules for clarity, eh?
@@MidwinterMinis Except the exact wording in the core rules is "Weapons with [TWIN-LINKED) in their profile are known as Twin-linked weapons. Each time an attack is made with such a weapon, you can re-roll that attack's Wound roll." that means you can re-roll successful wound rolls to fish for critical wounds if you so desire.
@@MidwinterMinis The rules are written as if you are resolving one attack at a time, so it never says something like 're-roll all the dice' or 'only the failed rolls'. Where it says 're-roll a Wound roll of 1' for example, it still means all the 1s you have rolled because each attack can use that rule separately.
Maybe already said but Twin-Linked let's you reroll whatever Wound Roll you want, you don't have to reroll the whole bunch of dice.
Even though I don't play or collect 40K myself, I very much appreciate the start section, because the statements there are applicable for almost any wargame:
You don't need a lot of models for your first game. You also don't need to create your force by any "balanced gameplay" rules, it's more important to get the gist of the game first. And finally, basically anything can function as a playing surface and terrain. Just use the dining table, throw some books, pencils, bottles, cans, etc. on it and start having fun.
Thanks for showing some of the "improvised first terrain", I think it really sells the point.
Been waiting for this!!! Perfect timing before the crusade begins at my local store. Thanks so much for this, Guy.
You're welcome!
I believe there is a mistake at 38:47, for battle shock your trying to get above the leadership not bellow it, so the cultist didn’t fail their test
by the looks of it and the narration, i reckon he mixed up the edit on the dice rolls, and they should have been the other way round.
Thank you so much. This will really help me teach Warhammer tenth edition to my scout group. I love your videos 👍
Amazing video! I've read almost the entire core rules in the past week, really helpful to see it play out like this
This was super fun to watch and definitely cemented the decision to get into WH40K by my brother and I. I'm going Space Marines (Ultramarines) and he's going Chaos Space Marines (mix of cultists and Emperor's Children).
As always, very high quality content from Guy. Keep it up brother, you're making this hobby more and more accessible for new folks and we need more channels like yours!
About that ”leading a unit”, it’s not open for intepretation because rules say that when bodyguard unit dies the leader unit is now a standalone unit
I know how to play, and this was still very fun to watch. I’m sure if you were new, this is exactly the kind of video that would encourage you to start playing! Very friendly, and well laid out. Thank you for this, and love what you do
You're how to play videos for 8th and 9th and their soundscapes got me back into playing warhammer after many years. The way you shot them and the music really sent me right back to playing when I was a kiddo. I've had a lot of fun playing and always feel comfy and at ease watching your videos. I really appreciate all the effort you put in, and I hope I get to see that leviathan box in play soon!
Imagine something like Lego Warhammer! We'll never hear the end of it!
Easy to assemble because you can put the pieces together, pre painted, and they wouldn't look out of place. Take some of those old kits and make your own war zone.
Thank you so much! just got back into the hobby from starting in 8th edition so this is a huge help!
Thank you guys so much for this video. I’ve been a fan of the 40k books and lore for a long time, and I recently decided to try learning to play, but it’s so complicated. This is easily the best video I’ve found breaking it down for someone like me who really struggles to learn by just reading a text book.
This the third one of these that I have watched by you folks! Definitely the best one out there!
Great video. Learned a lot and have already started to paint my Tyranids army. I will be sure to check out some of your other videos. Thanks for taking the time to go into detail and show us on screen on what to do on how to use the information provided.
I was just thinking about the video you did for 9th edition and was hoping you would do one for 10th, perfect timing seeing as I just finished building my leviathan box!!
Awesome video. Thank you for putting in all the effort on this. Very informative!
One quick thing to mention for mortal wounds is that they can be saved via a feel-no-pain ability like when the hazardous test was failed the master of possession could use the feel no pain ability to try and ignore the 3 mortal wounds
Even if he was no longer in a unit? Doesn't he lose that ability?
@@pa86_ That is correct he would not be able to if all the legionaries died
@@user-qh5xg1ub2i Okie. Thanks.
Going to start playing witj my bf now that were both adults with good jobs, no kids, and lots of money. The astra militarum will be my children 😂
Really respect that you waited to get this done properly, instead of bashing it out as soon as 10th Edition released, Guy. Already - as early days as it is for 10th - we are seeing the game rules be discussed, clarified upon and balanced and personally I think GW are doing a good job this time round keeping in touch with the community.
This video stands as a great guide for not just how to engage with the current rules, but how to have fun and adjust with how GW make changes. Great stuff 👍
Lovely tutorial! Crazy to see how complicated a small demo game already is. So many rules to keep track off
Thank you for this! I've been playing tabletop for years, but I haven't played Warhammer in quite a while. This is exactly what I needed. Subbed!!!
Thank you guys so much!!! This is honestly the best tutorial!! Im so excited to dive into Warhammer!
It's always a little funny to see what people use for their "quick makeshift terrain made from objects around the house" - quite adorable to see a stack of childrens' books here!
They're so chunky and stackable!
@@MidwinterMinis Certainly a good shout. I like the jenga blocks too - gives me a ideas for the school Warhammer group me and a colleague just started for our kids!
Thanks for the great video! I would absolutely love a beginner TACTICS video, where you talk about the decisions you make at different points of the game and what considerations you're thinking about when making them. I don't think there are very many videos like that, and it would be very cool to see
This was a great video to watch whilst painting. I haven't played in years but this made it sound so easy to pick up. Thanks guys :)
I have beeeeeeeeeen looking for a extreme beginners guide as detailed as this. Finally some one that got it. Thank yoooouuuu
This is a great tutorial and overview. Thanks a lot! Got to the point i was predicting the right saves and order of when to do it before the video!
This is my very first interaction with Warhammer 40k, and I had a blast. Awesome content
This was a great walk through of how 40k battle mechanics work! Thanks!
Very much enjoyed the video. You make an intimidating hobby seem a lot more easy to jump into. Thanks guys.
Yes finally I’ve been waiting for so long for this video I’m so hyped thxxx
This is so enjoyable, and I'm learning how to play ya'll awesome in teaching others.
Solid video! Thanks for your time and effort. The break down of rules, visual and comentary, are very helpful. I will be passing this on to my girlfriend as she is just now starting out in WH40k.
I’ve been wanting to get into table top war games like this for a while now and this was amazingly helpful in making me understand how this game works and I’m excited to start my armies
Great job on this video. Super useful. Subscribed.
I started my hobby with 40K, but was a bit turned off after some time possibly due to the crowd I played with, and the rules after 6th edition… I have since move to smaller skirmish games, but I still really enjoy watching videos about the game and hearing other people that are enthusiastic about the game talk about it. This video and game demo are flawless. Presented in a clear and incredibly digestible manner, great for newcomers to mini war gaming and the hobby.
Great job, Guy and Ant!! (And all others that helped to make this content) 👏
Thank you so much for this video man, really thank you guys
Just started this week. Thank you so much. 🙏🏻
that orks codex cover art is the most badass 80's heavy metal biker art ive ever seen.
The golden age!
That was really useful as a new player, thanks guys. That Hive Tyrant is a beast! Was a bit confused about the battle shock dice rolls but I see you said you mixed the dice up in the editing. Great vid though!
Super useful to run through this, I recently came back and was overwhelmed by the sheer number of rules
Excellent - Thank you so much for this video!
Don’t forget to take some time to scream into the void every now and then.
Oh, I do, don't worry.
Careful though... the void will scream back
This Video is fantastic! Thank you guys for making this ❤
At 38:48 you reverted to ye olden 9th edition's morale check btw. You correctly explained that a low LD characteristic is good, then proceed to roll over it (which is nice) and state it's a failed test. (Which it is not^^)
This video is greatly detailed but simple. I do have to say though for new players: "I'm sure soon enough, the codex for your army of choice will get released soon" is very likely untrue. There are 21 armies/codeces to release. After 4 months we got 2. At next year June, 9 are supposed to be released. If your amry is not in one of the 9 in the roadmap, it could take 18+ months to release. The last armies in 9th had a couple of months to play with their codex.
Really great video lads - big thanks
Last time i played, was 6th edition. This is soooooo much straightforward.
Good video guys! Clear and easy instructions.
absolutely magical how you can make this game actually make sense
Thanks for this guys. It is a really nice guide and really helpful
That was great! your how to play 40k vids are the only ones I don't totally check out in
Thanks just getting started really and this helps!
This was not only informative, but also entertaining! Thanks so much for the video cant wait to start playing...when I get the money lol
2 years of starting this hobby...I finally learned what mortal wounds are.
FFS I'll finally understand this game one of these days lol
Let's goooo, tenth edition tutorial from the legend himself
Dudes this was super fun, thank you!
I just started warhammer and am working on a grey knight army and this video helped so much
I can't believe I watched the whole thing. Really cool.
Great video!!! Wouldn’t even mind seeing another one with slightly larger armies and using things like transports, flyers and maybe some alpha striking strategies.
Never one to like and comment but the fact that I'm not even a minute in and you have already helped me more then most by showing with an example game ❤
This video was so helpful in understanding the game! I’m starting to get into warhammer and this is the one video that helped me understand most of the of it. Do you have any additional videos that cover vehicles?
This is a great video... And you teaches newbies an important lesson; if you wanna win you gotta play Tyranids.
Great video! Very helpful for those new to the game. Great presentation throughout. Good job both!
Couldn't have done it without you, my friend!
Great timing for this video. I just bought a Votann patrol e hearthkyn warriors to start my army! Now I have some idea of how it plays... just need friends to play =')
Lovely introductory video 🙂
This is a really helpful video. Thanks ❤
Yes!
I'm working on a Loyalist Thousand Sons army and will be using standards SM cards.
Honestly, if Battle Reports were narrated like this, I would watch a ton more Battle Reports.
Edit: I was delighted to discover you do, in fact, have such Battle Reports. Excellent.
Nice to see how it's actually played, hasn't changed all that much and looks a lot quicker
I can't believe how easier is version of Grim and Dark Future by One Page Rules
A 1 hour midwinter minis video?
Wow, what a Guy.
I just started getting into 40k, and I'm working on Tyrannids for my first army. They are cool.
thanks for this, I appreciate it! i only paint the models but interested in playing.
Brand new to the game. Just got gifted a necron army. So excited to play this
I’ve been watching this channel for a few weeks and I love the videos. Unfortunately I don’t have enough money to start, but I still love these types of videos
Don't pass up getting used/pre-painted models on ebay! You can score an absolute bargain sometimes. That's what I did when I started out in the hobby again and had a very limited budget.
Anytime there is a big release like 10th edition just now is the best time to get great deals, often people will buy the set and only want one army. Online stores such as element games also sell minis for up to 20% off.
Thanks for the advice
a better way to explain the fight phase is to say it as it is and split it up.
we got Fight First and normal fight and when you charge you gain fight first for that turn.
then you need to also remember that the opponent goes first.
so we take the fight first models first, so the ones who charge, if the opponent had fight first rule, then it would be the opponent who would go first.
then it is the normal fight, also starting with the opponent.
Always wonderful guy
Guy has blessed us with an hour long video🤩🤩
Loved seeing the Orlock Ganger turned Cultist in that mob
YES THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED!! Thanks, this is very easy to get into in this format (btw, i love the random little og necromunda orlock dude who decided that chaos was the way to go for him :DD)
Well spotted!
Stongly hoping Guy can get a couple of Age of Sigmar starter boxes painted up in time for 4th edition AoS. I'd love to see one of these great video guides for the fantasy side of things.
Love the content man 👍👍👍
This content is awesome, thanks!!!
