Awesome job! You are gifted. I’ve switched out sprinkler heads a few years now for friends/family. I never can keep as clean as you lol. Awesome videos! We appreciate you.
👍 Thank you! Just moved to a home with irrigation which I have never experienced. Like your situation, I have several heads needing re-positioning. Its been somewhat intimidating, so I searched for a service to come out and estimate cost of repairing and moving five heads. I was not prepared for the cost of the repair. The irrigation contractors each advised they would have to replace the entire system. Your videos have encouraged me that I can do this. I can dig 🤣 and Home Depot is close❕
Here's the problem, you believe that repositioning several heads will fix your issue. You called professionals out there and they said you need a new system. What they where telling you is we are not going to shine your turd.
Excellent video.. Thanks for sharing. I have a few questions. Thanks in advance to those sharing their knowledge and experience. 1. Is funny pipe the same as rainbird swing pipe? 2. From durability perspective, does funny pipe last as long as PVC? What about connections. How much pressure can they stand? Since there are no clamps used. 3. The rotary sprinkler nozels seem to be throwing water at the same distance. Does it give any coverage close to the sprinkler? Thank you.
1. Yes funny pipe is the same as swing pipe. SPX-FLEX is the Rain Bird part number. 2. I've had funny pipe in the ground for over 20 years with no problems. It's rated to operate up to 80 psi. I have had problems with after market barb adapters so I only buy Rain Bird. 3. Rotary nozzles do a decent job watering next to the head, but I also try to get head to head coverage when installing the sprinklers.
What are you talking about. They haven't been out since the 1940's... Maybe the 1980's, but even then those R-VAN nozzles came out only in 2018. Before that it was the HE-VAN nozzles for high efficiency by 2011, and not sure exactly when but at some point they came out with their regular VAN nozzles. All the VAN nozzles are variable arc nozzles that can be adjusted.
@@thisherewalnut8139 Thanks. I just make it up as I go along. Each year I end up repairing my front yard as the HOA mower breaks a bunch of nozzles. It's no big deal. At the moment, I think I have the cheap VAN nozzles installed. Probably will swap them all out for HE-VAN when it becomes warm spring/summer again.
When you screw on the elbow, how is it always facing the right direction? What do you do? If when you screw it on and it’s facing 90° or 180° from the direction you wanted to face before you attach the swing pipe?
You can unscrew the cap and rotate the internal assembly to align the shaft & nozzle, or when the head is watering you can twist the shaft to align the spray.
@@Iscaper I mean when you screw the elbow onto the main water pipe in the ground, what do you do if the elbow is facing the wrong direction there, that you want to attach the swing pipe to?
Everything looks good except that you're supposed to leave the bleeder caps on the sprinkler heads until the excavation is done then you run the sprinklers, bleeding out any debris before installing and adjusting the nozzles.
When using the flexible plastic tubing shouldn't one use clamps to prevent separation of pipe to a barbed fitting. I have 80 psi water delivery from the city,
Rain Bird funny pipe (SPX-FLEX) doesn't require clamps. I've never had a problem using Rain Bird funny pipe with Rain Bird barb adapters. I have had trouble using Rain Bird funny pipe with after market adapters. I only made that mistake once.
Great video, very informative. Nice pliers! I’ve been told you shouldn’t mix different types of heads within the same zone, also that drip irrigation should be on separate zone from sprinklers. Would you agree or no? It looks like no.
If possible don't mix heads. In reality that's often not possible. I have 2 zones that the drip heads share the zone with the lawn heads. That's the way it was when we bought the house. The trick for me is balancing the watering for both so the lawn gets enough water and the drip heads don't get too much.
The reason you're not supposed to mix heads is because of the precipitation rate of the different kinds of heads. Heads that have a precipitation rate of 1 inch per hour as opposed to a 1/2 inch per hour will give you wet or dry spots. A basic example is fixed spray heads and rotors. Pressure has nothing to do with the different types. They are all designed to run efficiently at around 35 to 45 psi unless you get into the larger type rotors used on golf courses which can run at much higher psi ratings. If you run basic spray heads at higher psi, you'll get misting which tends to drift the water into your neighbor's yard. At 35 psi, you'll get larger droplets that land where you want them to land. Point being, the system should be installed based on available gpm and pressure. Zones should be separated based on precipitation rates. Hope this helps.
I like the Hunter MP Rotators because they have a traditional screw head to reduce throw distance. Everything else is almost the exact same. I noticed your Rain Bird rotators move much faster than Hunter MP rotators, but that shouldn't make a difference in performance.
On most sprinkler systems the piping is shallow, around a foot in depth. Automatic drains or blowing out the system with compressed air are two solutions to keep pipes from freezing.
Good video, but I have always been told you shouldn't run funny pipe that far. Instead you could cut the pvc and add a piece to get to the corner, then use the funny pipe to locate the head.
Kerry have you ever used thoes nozzles on a sys with a pump feeding from a well if so have they ever clogged up on you I find that the pump sys clog them up
Find a "T-Style" filter to install on mainline end (output) side of your pump. It may have to be cleaned monthly or bimonthly but will solve your issue
Or my personal favorite "Irritroll Total-Control" timer with 15 start times per program with 4 programs A-D. You can set up start times through out the day with just a minute or 2 to eliminate runoff

Thanks so much! I just cancelled the appointment I made with the sprinkler company as I can easily do this myself with your instruction, free!

Good to see you retrofitting those older spray nozzles with rotary nozzles. I highly recommend them to customers with smaller yards and older systems.
Jeremy Couturier
Thanks. I have both, an old system and a small yard.
Other than being high maintenance and expensive they aren't too bad.
Thank you so very much for a fantastic and easy to follow video! I was worried I couldn’t do it! You explain it so well!!
Thanks Heather, I appreciate the feedback.
Well done! I haven't heard of funny pipe before and I like the ease of it. Thank you, lots of great tips. Can't wait to start my project this weekend.
One gotta test the new piping for any problems or faults before burying them.
I tested orbit , hunter and rainbird sprinkler heads and the one you used are the best ones. Easy to adjust , long reach, good coverage

Hunter MPRs are overrated, regular rotors work just fine, are less maintenance, and cost less in the long run.
What's your experience been with buried funny pipe? Still last like PVC?

Any concerns with the pipes freezing, or is your frost line pretty shallow?

It would depend on the flow demands of the sprinkler head. I've run funny/swing pipe 20' with no problems.

Depends, you need to add up the gpm (gallons per minute) your sprinkler heads will use and compare that to the available flow your sprinkler zone has.

do you not need to clamp the pipe to the head

the barbs are designed to only move hose inward, there is a lot of resistance by design trying to remove barb from hose
