Assessing and servicing my new MGB's ENGINE - Includes compression test

- I get the oil, filter and spark plugs changed on the MGB, adjust the tappets and give it a fighting chance of passing a compression test. Join me to see how it does!
I love the fact that JB gave you hell for playing away... Great to watch the story unravell with the brown bomber. Don't think I will ever get used to that colour though. Seems wrong for an MG but looked good on a Triumph Dolamite.
I think it actually looks really good in the metal. The pics and videos don't do it justice.
I always learn a load of good stuff from watching your videos. Thanks so much for sharing it - warts and all. Much appreciated. 🙂
Thanks! I don't always get it right myself, so I hope you're not taking what I say as gospel!
@@Endfloat You are always very open and honest as you try things so don't worry! It's just good to follow along with your thought processes as you troubleshoot. That's where I pick up a lot of the learning. 😁👍
Great little tinkering video Ross, nice to see the new MG on the Move.
My Gran and Grandad who a Marina possibly in this colour, my Gran used to pick the colours and she wanted the car to match the colour of her Brown Shoes!
Love the chocolate brown colour. It's not normally a colour most would chose but it really suits the car.
Good to see you back working on an MG. 🙂
Thanks! Trust me, this'll keep me busy for a while yet!
Wish I could get you down here! A '77 Rover, practically the same engine and Carbs, having some issues.
What issues?
@@Endfloat Email just sent!
Try starting the car in 4th gear. when it grabs push the clutch back in, it usually frees up. Car sounds great just a carb balance and maybe some marvel mystery oil in the gas and oil. Beautiful MG!
I think the clutch is alright now. Starting it in gear did the trick. I reckon the car just needs a good run.
Another Great video!
Going to be a nice mgbgt . Good job you sussed out the problem but luckily you have the parts 👍 I’d do away with headlamp grills and eye lids tho
Great honest video. Be interesting to see how you get on with the head.
Beautiful GT.
I'd be tempted to sell the other MGB, good work!
I feel like I made a commitment to restore that car. I couldn't bring myself to sell it.
@@Endfloat good for you, I look forward to seeing the videos. Cheers!
Had the exact same problem with one of my MGB engines, just turned out to be the headgasket. The cylinderhead and block turned out to be fine.
Hopefully its just the gasket.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Changing the head is no great drama, and I suspect its the gasket too. Mileage discrepancy could be due to a new speedo? car looks in great condition though, love the minilites.
Good point about the Speedo. It's hard to know though. I think the worn bolster on the drivers seat would suggest higher mileage.
On a separate note - would you mind sharing what door speakers it has fitted? I'm trying to find a pair that have cones shallow enough so they don't interfere with the window winding mechanism behind the door panel!
I'll take a look at them next time I'm in the garage for you.
@@Endfloat that would be helpful - thanks.
Well I like the brown. Heck, I grew up in the seventies where everything was brown 🟤
Great troubleshooting. I wonder if that's a common failure point on the 1800 motor, at >100k miles? Good luck with the car. What a great find. If the undercarriage is as nice as the paint, you really have a gem there. Have fun with getting her road worthy. Would you consider the clutch issue to be resolved at this point? Happy Motoring !
I think (hope) the clutch is sorted now but time will tell. It shifts fine now. The car had a new radiator in 2019 so I reckon there was an issue there.
@@Endfloat
Hi Endfloat. That's good about the clutch. As far as the radiator, they do eventually rust out or fail and have a leak.
I've had my '72 for a couple of years now and let me tell you, the way my radiator looks gives my no confidence going down the road. It's got some fins missing abd green Cooper oxide near the bottom of it. But it never leaked and the car never runs hot. I will be replacing it as a preventative maintenance measure.
Good luck with this brown car. It's real nice !!
At last you got on in the right colour 😂
I didn't think I'd like them in brown but I really do!
Stuck rings? Valves?
Nope. You've to wait for the next installment to find out though.
How is Jellybean going? Are we going to see anymore of her? 😊👍🏻
Most definitely, but it's going to have to wait a while. It needs both time and money, and both of those things are in short supply.
