just been walkies with my m60 pack, found a live pigeon floating in the local canal. pigeon rescued all dry now and flew off. Pigeon shows respect by not pooping on the m60.

You've probably figured this out by now, if you rearrange the leather part of the strap so the metal clip on bit clips into the middle d ring at the top, then put the longest part of the leather through the thing in the middle of the pack at the back. It seems to level everything out and the clips don't come out at the top even if you don't bend them.

The paper you found inside said:List of what is inside:Tanktop,Underwear, summer socks, winter socks, towel, washcloth, tissues, and the rest i cannot translate i dont even know those last 4 things because I am Czech and it was probably used by the slovak army because of the spelling(Slovakia has a very very similar language to Czech Republic)and I just dont know the translation. And i translate the things as they go from top to bottom.

      belt*
      webbing
      (Cant find anything for šie)
strap with buckle/girdle something like that
some other type of webbing attachment (www.army-store.net/images/sklady/22320j.jpg)
I can't read the handwritten item

TheOutdoorGearReview Hi, so I try also to translate the list you found in the rucksack :-).Content list (but I think it is list for new soldier who was called for basic service, it was in comunism for every man for two years, in Czechoslovakian folk army... it is like a basic stuff for every soldier). 0. (handwrited) Shirt 1. Undershirt; 2. Boxer shorts; 3. (Crossed-out: foot rags - en.valka.cz/attachments/12688/onuce.jpg ) summer socks; 4.(foot rags) winter socks; 5.Towel; 6. Dish towel; 7. Tissue; 8. Belt (strap) for attasch trousers leg (maybe this thing, don't know english term for that www.combatcamp.cz/spinky.JPG ); 9. "Y" straps (bearing straps); 10. Suspenders (shoulder straps); 11. belt with buckle; 12 Slider (? the right term) for belt ( this thing www.csla-borotin.estranky.cz/img/mid/29/posuvky-k-opasku.jpg ) 13. dress strap (this one www.army-surplus.cz/upload/2278067/pic1_full.jpg ) and it is all. But I'm very happy if I saw someone who review and likes our (Czech) old school army stuff, I thought none likes it except czechs :-). (And I hope it is understadable, because my english is not good).

Very informative, and helped me get the straps hooked up correctly. One thing--on the short, "loose" straps that nobody seems to know quite what to do with: they can each be clipped to the strap on the opposite side of the chest, creating a chest strap that might be helpful, and would certainly keep the shoulder straps from slipping out of place. Just a thought.

I'm sure not many people are reading these comments anymore, but the strap system is really more of a suspension system designed to work with the military issued belt. There are two leather loops with square steel rings that slide onto the belt. The dangly straps on the front attach to those. That leather strap at the back runs down and attaches to the issued belt. This makes it much more comfortable to carry, especially if you're adding heavier or bulky items. Any decently wide military web belt should work though.
For example, you have little canvas straps on the sides and bottom that will allow you to tie on other equipment like a short brush axe, e-tool or machete. You could roll up a bedroll and tuck it under the flap and tie it down. The straps on the bottom will also allow you to add items to your pack.
If you want to take this pack out though, I'd seriously suggest adding some kind of waterproofing to it. A simple oilskin treatment of linseed oil and mineral spirits works, or a fabric wax of some sort. The linen soaks up water super fast, fyi. If the Czechs did treat these, whatever they used has probably long since worn off.

I got one for $10 from Keep Shooting. I can't say I care for the straps at all. I put a shoulder strap from a US 2-quart canteen carrier on it, and it works fine as a shoulder bag as long as I don't overload it. Mine also came with a packing list with some common field items. It's a cool companion for my CZ-52 pistol!

Glad you reviewed this ruck, Luke. Major Surplus and Survival has the leather strap version for 10. I think I may get one because, well, for 10 U.S., it's cool. It'll make a nice day pack for traipsing around in the woods, shooting guns ( I live in the rural mountains in the U.S. South. We do a lot of shooting and stuff up here, surrounded by miles of woods in the Great Smokies with no cops and neighbors for miles ). It looks kinda like it doesn't hold very much gear ( I like my ILBE with assault pack, Fox 3 day Combat Pack, and LAPG Atlas 72 ), but it seems nice and light and will hold extra ammo, some food, water, my meds, a trauma kit ( just in case ), some general stuff like paracord, compass, etc........, and some whiskey for a day of walking around the woods shooting stuff. That way, I can bring more and stronger firepower lol ( we do have some dangerous wildlife in these mountains and carry guns for more than just fun ). I think a can of Scotch Guard will be good to weatherproof it. Thanks again :)

Luke. All wrong the way you have rigged the straps and described this. If you want to set this up correctly UA-cam German Ww2 y strap setup. This Hungarian pack and straps are a direct copy of the Wermacth m31 and M44 rucksacks. The Hungarian were Allies of Germany in WW2 so much of their field gear were direct copies to the stuff the German Army were using.
The leather Y strap goes down directly thru the little loop. Straight down, not up and around. It is attached to the bottom of your leather belt. This pack is only meant to be worn integral w a leather belt ie German and Warsaw Pact style.
Next, all wrong on the cloth loops on the side of the pack. These ARE NOT to attach the extra straps too! These side loops are used to attach a bedroll using separate leather straps on each loop. Think a US Marine 1941 backpack w Camo roll around the top n sides. So the bedroll would attach to the sides n top of pack using those loops and leather straps straps or bedroll straps.
Luke. Big fan, but man do some research before presenting surplus items you aren’t familiar w. If folks aren’t using this w a leather belt they really aren’t using this pack to its fullest. Also never ever use pliers to bend the hooks. If you use a plain old leather cowboy belt or other and place the hooks of the straps under the belt this system takes all the weight off your load much like modern mole or a full setup Alice system would. The beauty of the pack is its ability to stay on firm and ergonomic but when you want to just slip off the pack for speed while keeping your ammo pouches buttpack and canteen on for scouting, you just slide off the pack. If you have used pliers to bend your hooks as Luke did, you have just ruined this cool ability as it was used by German and Hungarian soldiers.
Was US Army Intel during the Cold War in Europe and saw these packs often as worn by our adversaries across the border. Cool setup.

+The wilderness survivors the frame is terrible on the 82 Pattern for durability and the sacks themselves are prone to fraying (the fraying isn't a huge issue, I just melt the edges). The hardest part is finding one in good condition and complete. In the USA I'ld imagine that any Canadian gear is about as rare as hens teeth.

There is alot of old designs still around or just going out of use. The Norwegians used the original Bergan rucksack that essentially was unchanged except for the bag material since 1916. They just officially put them to pasture in 2012 but apparently still see limited use.

This didn't called m60 rucksacks. It wasn't designed in 1960 but in late 40's. It was used in 50's on nattle uniform. By the time they were changing the material. I belive that your example is from early 50's.

    • @Ge_Stern
      @Ge_Stern 4 роки тому

Yes, obviously there were early and late examples of rucksacks, there are some differences between them. We can see this one was made in 1952 (3:31), so it's "early" and of course not so-called M60.

The M60 ruck is part of the Czechoslovakian army webbing system, the strap down the back and two extra straps on the shoulder straps attack to the combat belt on which is attached the magazine pouches, canteen, shovel, gas mask bag, bayonet, etc., that forms the combat webbing.
The leather patch on the back of the Y-strap rests against your back so when your ruck is loaded it doesn't put pressure on the metal D ring into your back.
