I ride flatland and street. I'm a mid school rider 100%. Bike weighed 39 proud lbs. You hit the nail on the head. Favorite flatland riders: Paul Osicka, Day Smith, and Chase. Street: Edwin, "Butcher " Kowalski, and Taj.
The goofiest mid-school trend was 40 bound bikes. Jesus. Why? Also, that flatland business playing in the background is just insane. Flatlanders are absolute bmx wizards. Also, best old headset was the the GT Epoch. Spring loaded! The only older headset I ever had that never came loose.

"I can tailwhip, and I can jump the gap. So i should be able to tailwhip the gap" I think the goofiest trend was the dropouts the size of dinner plates. I guess no one had figured out hub guards. They were supposed to protect your hubs durring grinds, but you would just end up landing on the dropout, fuck up your hub anyway, and flip over the bars cause you came to an immediate stop. After a while, everyone just had mangled rusty dropouts cause they had trimmed all the extra material off.
-Van Homan! ... so true about those damn dropouts. I hopped on a skinny round rail once and the rail wedged between the dropout and the wheel, I went right over the bars.
Things that were goofy was: a number of people riding 3 pegs. 2 in the front& 1 in the back on your grinding side. Running a good, sealed triple wall rear wheel, and stock unsealed in front. Rolling your right pant leg up. Running a good sealed wheel on the front(chrome plated) and an unsealed stock wheel, rear, only because, you found, stole, or someone gave you the better wheel. I'm sure I was looking and dressing like Garret Byrnes and Van Homan. Whatever frame I was on, I was set up like Van Homan's bike, with the exception of sometimes running front brakes. I went through a Dyno Detour, Mongoose Motivator, Haro Nyquist, 2 hip root down, Eastern Jane, Dk Eight Pack, & now still have a Premium 2004-Team. Haro Nyquist with Alex triple walls was nearly 40 lbs. Brand slogans, I liked Dk six pack& eight pack.
I miss the HUGE air and insane combos of the BMX vert competitions that were in a half pipe only. Also, check out Trevor Watring. He rides a mid-school style, rides front brake, has knee/shin pads outside of his jeans, and often has the full face helmet. Mid-school style in modern competitions. It's a treat.
Yea crazy you say our crappy bikes held us back is 100% true. I'm 6'5 so having a bike tuff enough to hold when I really wanted to go for it . Even now can't afford a bike I can ride for real and not be destroyed within a week.. would love a 24" Cult,DK,or PK ripper. I'm 42 and can still get just need a bike

I have not finished this video yet, but I love the memories,I have two points, I would like to make, I had never seen mid school until props video, I will never forget that, I grew up on RAD and RAD TV ,old school woody Itson , martin Aprihejo GT demo video, I had only seen pictures of kevin jones in BMX plus,I had no idea of rolling tricks yet, then I seen a props video with 1st flatland contest, it had a lot of things, but when I seen chad degroot darkside, it was over for me, many years later I still ride and i still can't believe I can do some of those tricks now, and i recently thru the years got to do a darkside at a contest that chad was part of in florida, it felt like. a full circle moment

From what I remember, I feel like everyone I rode with transitioned from Primo Tenderizer pedals to the Jim Cielencki's. Everyone had Chelencki pedals or however it was spelled. I used to just call em Kalinki pedals lol They came in all types of colorways and limited editions like glow in the dark. BTW I still have an Animal fitted from the early 2000's. Them caps were legit and came in all flavors. Shame to see them fall away.
I remember when people started switching over to plastic pedals, I refused to even try them.l, WalMart bikes had plastic pedals, metal pedals meant you were a real rider... I love my plastic pedals now. 😆 Animal was on the verge of becoming a legit street wear brand, I remember seeing those fitted hats being worn by rappers at the time. Crazy

You don't need the compression bolt after the clamp is tightened. Mine stays in the toolbox with the wrench. Now if only the stem and fork didn't have stickers on the mating surface for some reason... That's one thing S&M still hasn't figured out.
All the riders in the first anthem video Taj & Joe, Chris Stauffer, Punjab, ground chuck. I spent most of my time riding and maintaining trails in the late 90s-early 00s and watched that video thousands of times.

I think of primo meat tenderizers, I was so use to the Anaya 7x rim bending that I got 12 gauge spokes laced to Alex triple wall rim with perigrine phat jacks hubs. Motor cycle chain, we all rode everything, flat, vert, ramp, dirt. Grinding a small height ledge was looked at as lame. Everything was right hand drive.
"U droppin change ?" Is what some of us would say because our 4130 chrome bikes with demolition sleeved pegs sounded like loose change being dropped on the sweet polished concrete floors of lot 8 and cloud nine at woodward east where i lived for 4 years of my life !

I started riding in late 2005 so I'm more of a post-midschool rider (we need to give the late 2000's to late 2010's era a proper name) but I find the chronology of trends in BMX fascinating, specially during the midschool era. The whole "small/narrow bars and high seatpost" thing caught my atention because I noticed that new school riders, specially the "can i eat?" revivalism that is going in Barcelona have re-adopted those things. There's a guy called Miki Fleck who seems like a huge midschool nerd and not only his riding (dude kills it) and set-up but his whole aesthetic screams early 2000's and he's like the posterboy of that new scene.
You're right, there is a whole late mid-school era that really was its own thing. I remember those of us who were 4 pegs gyro and 2 brakes thinking of guys running 36t sporckets and 2 pegs as new school. Im definitely gunna have to pay attention to these new trends you mentioned cuz that sounds rad.
Burly everything. Dropouts, axles, wheels, chains, frames, tiny tires running 100psi. The irony of the 40 lb bike era is those frames were prone to cracking because NOTHING flexed! Wasn't until years later that I figured out that mid school bikes / frames were too stiff and cracked where the two shockwaves met.

Older haro and mirraco parts odyssey dirt forks. Bars that are only 8.25 from a haro complete. The mid-school kicked in and I bought a terrible one sticker for the cross bar

I'm from the weight-weinie era and we drilled holes in everything, slammed the seats, i had a odyssey jr seat that was tiny, I drilled holes into my odyssey hazard rims, I'm sure we removed way too much material and thats why we broke everything.

Had some S&M Dive bars. You mentioned the Alex triple wall rims but also the fact that we all ran 48 spoke wheels. Had 44 tooth sprockets with 16 tooth freewheels. I think it was Odyssey that came out with the first 13 tooth freewheel which was a game changer for us that couldn't afford a cassette.
I remember getting the hazard lite 36 triple walls when they came out. Beat the fuck outta them..only problem I ever had was blowing spokes on the front wheel from grinding. Damn good wheelset

The biggest trend I was obsessed with as a mid school was gyro brakes. Always wanted them, always broke, no one could repair them properly. I know they are much better now but I never want a set ever again Don’t have a quote for you but my first bmx was a Fishbone Double Gusset. It had those small bars and was heavy as shit
It took me a long time to appreciate Aitken, as a kid I thought tricks were the measure of how good a rider was but Mike proved style and flow was just as relevant
I remember reading in a Ride Uk mag about a specific bike company that was bucking the trend of heavy "bulletproof" frames/bikes in late 90's/early 2000s. The bike/company was taking an engineering standpoint of only engineering it to how far it needed to go, no excess thickness of metal etc. I think it was taking inspiration from bikes of the 80s (that one im not sure of though, i just remember the bike being more like an 80s bike than a 90s tank)
I still prefer smaller bars(7.25 rise 26 width), skinnier tires(1.85-1.95), and metal pedals(sealed magnesium). I get on some of my friends bikes and they feel like monster trucks with flat tires. I do also ride a more mid-school style flatland though. Some other good names: Primo - Stiffy pegs (Street/Park) Primo - Tubesteak pegs (Flatland) Homeles - Pornstar frame Hoffman - Love Handles And a newer one: Alienation - Circle Jerks (Chain tentioner spacer)

In Machine shop in H.S I turned down a type of I bolt, I hated star nuts so much and That thing worked great. And i used to sand down break pads to knock the glaze off the rubber to work better.
I remember my dk step up had super small bars and my cranks were super fucking long u couldn’t pedal around corners without crashing. Also remember my bikes having huge sprockets and back in those days too.
Oh man 😂 worst "trend" thing I did was take a Poverty super thick sprocket WITH the motorcycle chain and bolted it to Haro master guard... I'm sure the crank arms were barley on the spindle hanging on for dear life! This was the summer of sprocket stall anything and everything, bike had to be pushing more than 45lbs. Other overkill stupid thing I did was saved up forever to get custom wheels built... 48h Alex triple walls, Primo SOB 14mm F/R hubs with 12ga spokes 🤢 and the rear axle still bent like butter🙄. I remember building my first wheel after that front Araya Super7X 36h to GT high flange race lace 3/8ths hub and XS 4x4 48h Araya RB-J1 Himiko, this was the end of my wheel woes era since I could tru my own now... I remember always sitting on the sidelines or missing the sessions because of rear wheels being garbage for me.

I started riding in late 2005 so I'm more of a post-midschool rider (we need to give the late 2000's to late 2010's era a proper name) but I find the chronology of trends in BMX fascinating, specially during the midschool era. The whole "small/narrow bars and high seatpost" thing caught my atention because I noticed that new school riders, specially the "can i eat?" revivalism that is going in Barcelona have re-adopted those things. There's a guy called Miki Fleck who seems like a huge midschool nerd and not only his riding (dude kills it) and set-up but his whole aesthetic screams early 2000's and he's like the posterboy of that new scene.
You're right, there is a whole late mid-school era that really was its own thing. I remember those of us who were 4 pegs gyro and 2 brakes thinking of guys running 36t sporckets and 2 pegs as new school. Im definitely gunna have to pay attention to these new trends you mentioned cuz that sounds rad.
Burly everything. Dropouts, axles, wheels, chains, frames, tiny tires running 100psi.
The irony of the 40 lb bike era is those frames were prone to cracking because NOTHING flexed! Wasn't until years later that I figured out that mid school bikes / frames were too stiff and cracked where the two shockwaves met.
I had the Kink Fiend Frame. Buddy had a Volume Dinosaur. Good times.

I always ran the cheapest and easiest set up when I finally got money I did the Kevin porter tierra. Couldn’t get use to the style and now I’m back on late mid school styles. Older haro and mirraco parts odyssey dirt forks. Bars that are only 8.25 from a haro complete. The mid-school kicked in and I bought a terrible one sticker for the cross bar
Never did soda, but we did spray RightGuard deodorant on our rims…..worked like a charm.
I remember seeing kids put pull tabs from monster cans where their spokes cross lol it looked kind of cool at the time.

I'm from the weight-weinie era and we drilled holes in everything, slammed the seats, i had a odyssey jr seat that was tiny, I drilled holes into my odyssey hazard rims, I'm sure we removed way too much material and thats why we broke everything.
That's awesome. I had a friend that was determined to find a way to fill his tires with helium. LOL
Same, never drilled holes but snapped several pairs of aluminum bars, tryin to save weight.

We used Simple Green for our rims instead of soda. Worked pretty good but obnoxiously loud braking
Had 7.5” FBM bars. Still have em and a standard sta-500 platinum ox. And have some big sprockets 😅 now on 10” bars and love em.👍🏻
Im on 9" bars now with a top load stem and they are starting to feel small. Some day we'll all be standing straight up with 20" bars. 😆

Had some S&M Dive bars. You mentioned the Alex triple wall rims but also the fact that we all ran 48 spoke wheels. Had 44 tooth sprockets with 16 tooth freewheels. I think it was Odyssey that came out with the first 13 tooth freewheel which was a game changer for us that couldn't afford a cassette.
The hazard lite cassette was also the most affordable at the time.

I remember getting the hazard lite 36 triple walls when they came out. Beat the fuck outta them..only problem I ever had was blowing spokes on the front wheel from grinding. Damn good wheelset

The biggest trend I was obsessed with as a mid school was gyro brakes. Always wanted them, always broke, no one could repair them properly. I know they are much better now but I never want a set ever again

It took me a long time to appreciate Aitken, as a kid I thought tricks were the measure of how good a rider was but Mike proved style and flow was just as relevant
I remember reading in a Ride Uk mag about a specific bike company that was bucking the trend of heavy "bulletproof" frames/bikes in late 90's/early 2000s. The bike/company was taking an engineering standpoint of only engineering it to how far it needed to go, no excess thickness of metal etc. I think it was taking inspiration from bikes of the 80s (that one im not sure of though, i just remember the bike being more like an 80s bike than a 90s tank)
I still prefer smaller bars(7.25 rise 26 width), skinnier tires(1.85-1.95), and metal pedals(sealed magnesium). I get on some of my friends bikes and they feel like monster trucks with flat tires. I do also ride a more mid-school style flatland though.

Here’s the myth about tennis balls In the wheels. If you find one and put it in your spokes you get good luck. You only have the luck while you can see where you found it. Once you leave the area the magical powers are gone.
In Machine shop in H.S I turned down a type of I bolt, I hated star nuts so much and That thing worked great. And i used to sand down break pads to knock the glaze off the rubber to work better.

I remember my dk step up had super small bars and my cranks were super fucking long u couldn’t pedal around corners without crashing. Also remember my bikes having huge sprockets and back in those days too.

Oh man 😂 worst "trend" thing I did was take a Poverty super thick sprocket WITH the motorcycle chain and bolted it to Haro master guard... I'm sure the crank arms were barley on the spindle hanging on for dear life! This was the summer of sprocket stall anything and everything, bike had to be pushing more than 45lbs.
Other overkill stupid thing I did was saved up forever to get custom wheels built... 48h Alex triple walls, Primo SOB 14mm F/R hubs with 12ga spokes 🤢 and the rear axle still bent like butter🙄. I remember building my first wheel after that front Araya Super7X 36h to GT high flange race lace 3/8ths hub and XS 4x4 48h Araya RB-J1 Himiko, this was the end of my wheel woes era since I could tru my own now... I remember always sitting on the sidelines or missing the sessions because of rear wheels being garbage for me.
Never use to boiled my grips but I did use windex to put mine on. I still do it to this day.
Windex works great, but I never use the right amount. Lol

I am 45 years old and when I was 16 I had my oldest brother weld washers to steel pipe that I cut 4 inches long to make pegs and they work great

I used an adjustable wrench to straighten tacoed rims.
I know its already sort of covered, but using motorbike chains, primary so you could crash your sprocket onto anything and everything. After the frame, the 2nd most heavy piece of gear on a bike. Fucking madness.
