People who criticize someone who is trying to help them makes me crazy. Thank you for all you do to help other people in aviation. I just started my training after reading your book (Thank you for the book) and always look for your videos and webinars before my lessons.

One thing I did do wrong while training was lower flaps while turning base or final. I knew not to lower at low speeds but if I was going fast enough I thought there would be no issue. I guess I didn’t know any better as my instructors would do the same!

One thing they hammered into my thick skull... Landing is your SECOND option.
If its still running, you need to treat that landing with trepidation, like an EX-wife.
She might look good NOW, but in 15 seconds, she will turn into exactly what you were AFRAID would happen.
You got a yoke and a throttle... just fly away from that drama.

#FLYING Landed 5 yesterday morning at KOCF. Two landings that I liked, having the pattern tight makes the difference. Yes, correctly too much left or right of runway. Softer on controls and I'm getting it smoother. *Aim nose at #'s. Side note: Tues, the day before, two soft field landings, SE of KOCF. Going just about every week day. Not always flying but classroom. On LAB 17. Going back to back days really is making my progression quicker. Still not had my solo, but ready when ready this month for sure, maybe this week. #FLYING

  • @daryldrennan

All airplanes are designed to aerodynamically brake to land and we knows this because they have wings. And just like a bird transitioning from the air to the ground, a flare transition is going to occur even on a minimal scale and aerodynamic drag is also going to continue until the wings loose there aerodynamic bouncy and they will eventually unload once as they loose speed to create lift and fly. The approach principles that Jason is using are straight forward because wings are designed on planes with those approach ideas in mind. In fact what he's sharing about having a circle on the windshield is just like an F-16 for instance having a flight path marker which is put on the approach threshold of the runway and then is moved to the far end of the runway once as the jet is over the approach threshold.

S BRINER Isn't flying in general "mortal danger?" We essentially shoot ourselves into the air a literally try not to die. I take it you've never flown a glider. Its a different skill set which is safe as if not safer than powered flight. You can stuff a glider into a corn field, pack the thing up, and launch it again later that day

Landings can be variable. This is other traffic, weather and environmental conditions, night, day or IFR conditions. All of these conditions can affect on how the approach and cautions are exercised in relation, to that approach. Thanks Jason.

As a student pilot: thank you for this video. My instructor is always yelling in my ear: "DONT LAND" "DONT LET IT LAND" "FLARE FLARE" "DONT YOU DARE LAND" "ON THE MAINS" "ON" "THE" "MAINS"
And as a result I pretty much tear that damn yoke out of its socket and balloon the shit out of that plane. I usually correct it in time but it'd be nice to have a landing without ballooning.
i'm going to give this a try.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend slow flight down the runway for a novice pilot flying solo or without a CFI. Aside from that this video is full of valuable redundancy for private pilots who are "always learning." :)

#1 way to make a perfect landing: do the same procedure every time. Also, don't fight the airplane. Airplanes have been well designed. If you fly the appropriate speed down wind (80 kts, 2000 RPM on a 172) adding flaps will simply cause the airplane to slow down to the proper final approach speed every time without any changes to trim or any need to fight with the controls. Airspeed is king, so make it easy on yourself and set up the downwind with *exact* power/airspeed combinations.
You should be hands off on final with no trim changes after you are established on downwind. That is the power of predictable performance.

Make sure you leave your ego, desire to impress your instructor, desire to solo in X number of hours, on the ground, otherwise you'll be over the recommend max gross weight, and your landings will suck. Finally, actually pay attention to the wind your flying around and landing.

You said that 777's flare on landing. Really? Are you certain that your 777 photograph showed the aircraft "flaring" for landing rather than rotating for takeoff? 777's and most large transport jets are typically flown onto the runway at a slow descent rate with typically, a 1-2 degree increase in pitch attitude just prior to touchdown.
