SA-55 definitely is Orbot’s prototype, and unfortunately like many people in the comments have said, was probably trashed after Sonic Unleashed. I am curious though why Eggman decided to not only update the SA-55 model but make a whole different robot, (Cubot,) alongside it. In the Sonic Boom TV show, the explanation is that the Cubot line of robots were created before the more refined Orbot line, and Eggman just happened to keep the last Cubot he created alongside Orbot. I wonder what the explanation is in the games.
I guess I am in the minority who actually likes these two characters. I think for robotic characters, they are designed quite well, especially with their shared unique ability to retreat into a ball-like and cube-like shape. Both of their voice actors do a great job portraying them, and when written correctly, they can be quite funny. I think the issue with them for a lot of fans is that they were introduced during an era in the Sonic franchise in which the writing was a lot less polished, and at first, they were a hit or miss in characterization and comedy due to this issue. Whether or not you think Orbot and Cubot became better characters over time, especially with more polished material thankfully starting to come out in recent years, like me is really up to interpretation.
It probably has to do with the fact the same writers for Sonic Lost World wrote Sonic Forces. I noticed the similarity too, and Lost World’s type of humor was one of the first things that came to me.
@gameomer1855 oooooh, In that minor flashback where Eggman was explaining how he came up with his plan Goddamn you're such a beast for noticing something as small as that

İ love Orbot and Cubot more than Decoe and Bocoe, but Decoe and Bocoe are nostalgic characters.İ miss Sonic X.I would love it if a new Sonic X was made including Orbot and Cubot.
SA-55, which was the prototype for Orbot, for some reason did not have the ability to hover in the air. Hence, hopping around really was the only option for it to move at all. 😂
It was a nice cameo that I actually really enjoyed. I’m glad both characters are still being acknowledged in the games, and were not ditched entirely due to the newer, more serious writing direction. They were not the problem with the games before Sonic Frontiers. The writing quality really was the issue, and it affected the whole cast.
The Beta version from Sonic Unleashed definitely had the potential to do just that. However, when it comes to the Orbot we have now, although I would love to see him do that because of all the abuse he gets from Eggman, (my opinion applies to Cubot as well,) I don’t think he would go through with it. The reason is that he both fears Eggman too much, and if he were to at least temporarily betray Eggman, he would just come back in the end due to really having no other place to go. This theory comes from a few instances I saw in Sonic Boom, in which during a few episodes, Orbot and/ or Cubot would leave Eggman for a brief time only to almost immediately come back for both reasons listed above.
@@MrGametv1994 And it was absolutely epic! The only reason I didn’t mention the episode in my comment was because Orbot still returns to Eggman in the end of the episode. While yes, he was rebooted by Cubot due to Orbot turning into a jerk from the ego boost he gained throughout the episode, I think he probably would have returned even without it. He ultimately still failed in taking over the village on his own, and after a while, the losing streak that would have occurred could easily have been enough to make him still return to Eggman. I am not against Orbot trying to strike it out on his own. In fact, I would love to see it happen to spice things up a bit. I just think unfortunately he would just go back in the end due to past instances of Orbot doing the exact same thing in a few other episodes.
I am so happy to not be the only one out there with the same opinion. Sonic Boom was where I went from thinking Orbot and Cubot were decent at best to pretty entertaining characters. Quite honestly, the entire main cast of the show were awesome. I seriously wish more people would give the show a chance. It’s not like the tie-in games quality-wise at all!
God the lighting in Unleashed was stunning! It still looks great to this day! Also, not me realising the "new" side kicks have been around for almost 20 years
If you ask me, Orbot and Cubot need the personalities of Decoe and Bocoe from Sonic X with the sassiness and bit of rebelliousness. Unleashed got the right idea with Orbot or rather SA-55 as he's called from what I heard from somewhere. So have SA-55's personality translated to Orbot. As for Cubot, he's a little too stupid for my taste and should be similar to Orbot to bounce of each other and Eggman (like the robots in Sonic X).
After Sonic Colors, his voice actor changed the way Cubot sounded probably to give him a bit more of an identity. In Sonic Colors, his voice chip was constantly acting up, so it made sense why his voice was so different. My headcanon in-universe for the voice change is that Eggman got annoyed with his previous voice, especially after being stuck listening to him ramble on in the middle of space, and changed it to make it more tolerable for himself.
I think orbot is a downgrade from his Earlier versions because he was Able to outrun Eggman, who is able to outrun sonic. Sonic is considered the fastest thing alive. if we consider everything I just said, the pre-version of orbot was the true fastest thing alive
