Clean your windows and put plastic over them. Duck Tape makes a brand that's super easy to use and can get it at wal mart. It will stop the condensation on your windows in the winter. (window insulation) I'm from TN and love it up here. (I live about 45 min. away from Canada but not off grid)

This is exactly where we're wanting to move. I did all the same things I've been looking at everything on UA-cam following all the real estate people following other people that moved up. I don't have your tools or know how. I'm glad you already found some Community because that's so important. That's the thing that scares me the most is going up where I got no kin and no lifelong friends. Where no spring chickens. Most of our 7 kids are grown we got two still with us 14 and 23 and others might come up later and it seems like you and I got the same goal to have a homestead for the family is really what it's been about.

I live in Albion Maine. It's central, but I'm absolutely in the woods. I live in the freedom town line. If you move to this area, find me. I will introduce you to the community. Albion has 1,500 residents & is the cheapest taxes in Kennebec county. (Granted, one driveway over is Freedom-Waldo County, which are still very low taxes). This is a farming town.
I grew up 10 miles down the road in China Maine. Which has a 7 mile lake. Palermo &
Liberty are bordering towns and have lake st George. The cleanest lake in the state. It's amazing being on that water.
Waterville is very close. It's recently been gentrified. Trendy restaurants, classic ones also. A lot of local organic shops of all kind. O! An organic local sourced deli/restaurant just opened in China Village.
All this to say, I love central Maine. You can be to either end of the state within the day. There's so much to do if you're into outdoor activities. Winter gets milder every winter but most people still consider this a lot of snow. (It's not!)
I'm thankful to live in a safe state. I can walk outside barefoot & swim in any water.
If you want more of a city vice, southern maine is very trendy. Most of the jobs in the state are in the southern areas. It's also extremely expensive compared to the rest of the state.
If you don't find me, never fear! Haha! I promise you, it won't be long before you make good friends wherever you end up. Go to the local church of your liking or a local shop, you'll find your community & you'll love it here!
My very best, to you! Take care.
