I want a bit of both, depending on the content. Joe and I just discussed this recently and my take is that some genres (electronic, rap, etc.) lend themselves naturally to immersive audio, where some creative object placement can really improve the experience of listening to the song. The Billie Eilish mixes are a great example of that. But if we're talking genres where you have the typical 3 or 4 piece band (rock, country, bluegrass, etc.), I think you're better served using Atmos to make the listener feel like you're in a live space (though you could really do that with straight upmixing if we're being honest).
On the movie side: There are action flicks where the action is non-stop and I'd expect "the circus" for those. There are horror films where I would rather it be subdued until the "scare" moments because the content demands it. Ultimately, I think Atmos has to serve the content or genre in question, as each has different demands.

    Circus ever!
For me, immersion in the music, with Atmos or any upmixer mode, is more important with live music discs ans Shows, because I want to feel like the people there. For studio albums, I don't miss it.

It depends on the artist and their music. Pink Floyd, a band that uses a lot of layers, elements in their music as well as sound-FX, screams for "the circus". Dark Side of the Moon really delivers, is a stunning Atmos experience.

I'm with Slim on this, it really depends on content. I love the ambience and openness of things like say A Quiet Place, but I also love the rockus space battles and gun fights. Audio should meet the expectation of the scene or content. I also like that Atmos can deliver new experiences, actually make you fee like you are underwater, or in the middle of a huge storm, or on a race track. At the same time, yeah I wanna hear my speakers and have stuff using them. Musically, it also depends. I love when Atmos is used to do a better version fo what DSP used to, transport us to a space, let me feel that concert in the Royal Albert Hall, like I'm there. Or be super ambient like with Pink Floyd. I guess I'm in the camp, if you're going to be subtle with like a catalog track, why make it immersive to begin with? Use those resources to do content that would beenfit from the circus. Lets be honest, Circus sells systems. But don't go crazy just cus you can, if the content doesn't warrent it, leave it alone. Still waiting on Eternity, Song by Anyma, hopefully you find it interesting to devote the time, and can find the stems to make it possible.

I want to duck, flinch, be shocked, and made to look up and not always when I expect it. I'm spending hundreds to thousands extra on a capable receiver and amp, putting holes in my celling, routing extra wires, up the ladder, down the ladder, and all for these few and far in between moments that are usually not very jarring. If dolby and movie makers are going to hype this thing up, make it worth my time and money. Please and thank you.

I usually don’t like when people say “it depends”. But, in this case, it depends. Others have already pointed out many great reasons why but my two cents is simply that we live in a world where there are sounds always coming from all directions 24/7. Even now I can hear my refrigerator doing its thing behind me in the kitchen. Is it annoying? Yes. But it’s still there. That’s what I wish we would get more of from the movie soundscape. There should not be any reason why all Atmos speakers aren’t engaged 100% of the time during a movie! I do understand that the movie soundtrack is pretty much the last thing done prior to the release and the sound designers usually don’t get near enough time to make it right. But when they do, that’s a thing of beauty! I just rewatched Dune part 1 and then went to a theater with Atmos to see part 2 and these movies are freaking amazing! I will be interested to see how active the height channels are at home because it seemed like they were non stop in the theater! I hope the new Godzilla movie keeps up the franchise’s reputation with great sound as well.
As for music, that’s a different animal! I agree with others that not all music needs to be mixed in Atmos and that some of the Atmos remasters out there are gimmicky and atrocious. But there is no denying that some music was made for Atmos. Electronic music is a great candidate for sure. Someone already mentioned Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. I’m a casual fan of Pink Floyd but I am a huge fan of the 5.1 SACD version of DSOTM! I really need to sit down and compare the 5.1 version to the new Atmos version. That should be a fun experience. Right now I am listening to the Dune: Part Two soundtrack in Atmos on Apple Music via AppleTV 4k and I must say it’s great! Some tracks are tame and nice like ‘A Time of Quiet Between the Storms’ and others are pretty insane like ‘Water of Life’! The LFE is fantastic as well right from the beginning. If you haven’t heard it I highly recommend listening to it. I am primarily a metalhead and I have mixed feelings about metal and Atmos. Most of the metal music in Atmos I have come across so far just seems to be remastered versions of albums already out. Some sound gimmicky putting instruments in random speakers just because they can which kinda pulls me out of the listening experience and others like Megadeth’s ‘Countown to Extinction’ album (which I love) is actually really awful. I’m just getting started on the metal in Atmos journey and I am finding out there is more than I expected available already. One that I am pleasantly surprised by so far is the new (2023) album ‘Heimdal’ by Enslaved. This is a more ‘extreme’ band and is not for everyone. Even I don’t listen much to this particular sub genre of metal but several of these bands have “spacey” elements to their music that is almost made for Atmos and while not perfect, this album has some creative ideas going on that seems to work here. My opinion of course! Ok, sorry to be so long winded. 😬

Great points brought up here. I was hanging out with Alan Meyerson, who is responsible for the immersive mix of the DUne 2 Soundtrack. I got to hear a little of his process for the immersive mixing of the soundtrack and I gotta say, he knows what he is doing. I still have to hear the Atmos version of DSOTM. I already have the SACD 5.1 and it's awesome!

The entire theme behind home theater (as well as commercial theater) is "TOTAL IMMERSION" - No? - That's for theater - I think music should be handled completely differently (as you allude to).
In my theater room, I want all my senses (well, as many as is physically possible) to be involved in the movie experience. - No smell-o-vision or taste-o-vision - yet! - lol

SACD is definitely more immersive than Atmos music to me. I believe it’s because the mixer has to balance channels to sound cohesive without relying on the stereo mix to lean on. Each channel seemed to have its own track. I bet they all will say SACD is harder to mix.
Bring on the Circus for me.

    • @TechnoDad

Completely depends on the film or music content - an action film with helicopters and planes should be 'circus' - an art house film, might be subdued with maybe one scene, where maybe rain is predominant that noticeably uses the overheads. All about what's suitable for the content - Aftersun for instance is a very quiet, dialogue-heavy film that wouldn't really need to be mixed in Atmos

    • @TechnoDad

Experimental tracks!!! Circus!!!! Artists could even sell a selection stems and maybe make a VR game where the user could throw the different tracks at different points in the vr space and it translate to the headphones or avr. So much could be done. Instead of dance offs, mix offs, etc. people could have immersion audio battles with venues that were built for like the Las Vegas Sphere! Endless possibilities!!!! It’s a great time to be alive!!

I believe that is artist dependent and/or genre dependent. One of my favourite artist is Jean-Michel Jarre and even in an non-atmos environment his music is heavly immersive, it certainly is at the circus end of the scale, but I wouldn't expect that from say RnB or a country track. What I love from atmos is the "suprise" element when you hear something pacific or defined from a music track.

I find it easy to override the sound experience of whatever I'm viewing using presets from my Marantz receiver. Often I'll be watching a movie playing a 5.1 soundtrack but the receiver is set to Auro-3D or Atmos or DTS - Surround, utilizing all 11 speakers and the subs. Yes, it's subtle, but quite noticeable, and almost always very pleasing.
My biggest gripe is the low utilization of channels beyond 5.1 in movie soundtracks. My second is that at least half of the Dolby Atmos soundtracks I've listened to lack any additional benefit beyond a 5.1 recording. If a major producer or company like Apple promoted multi-channel audio, the industries involved would have a new reason to get up in the morning. Apple's new VR headset is a good example of what's to come. But it all begins with content, and that means dollars spent to expand them, allowing all of us to move closer to our beloved Atmos dream.

Want to be able to hear dialogue, it’s a joke that many mixes on a mid range system for over a year trying to fix this prevalent issue. I just switched from Denon 960 H to the Sony AN 1000 for the center speaker options and still to no avail dialogue is still severely muffled or inaudible. I’ve tried every solution out there and it has not ceased. Great channel thanks for letting me vent

I think it depands on the situation. When i watch a action movie there need to be more atmos effects in there. But you should only do atmos effects when it makes sense. Not do it all the time just because you can. Also, when you listen to something classical. Like a 70's song etc. Then just keep it simpel. So really depands. But then the situation is there, i am in camp circus. But don't push it because of pushing it. Push it because there is a reason.

It may be because my Atmos speakers are set up as traditional Heights instead of the Dolby Atmos ceiling config format. Hey Channa D...
Thanks for the vid, it's good to see you networking amongst the kiddies that are in-play currently. I suspect though that "change of perspective" ain't goona come from anybody over 35yrs old. I heard a lot of mixers saying that they "tried to stay true intent"..."didn't want to disappoint listeners with expectations of past recording intents".
Artists in-concert are ALWAYS changing the way they play their libraries at concert!! They doesn't mimic the "trueness" of their libraries...
Listeners ALSO happen to like covers from other bands/ artists... HELL, look at Tony Bennett covering Sinatra ditties 💁🏻‍♂️
My position is, if people seek out new releases..."IN DOLBY ATMOS".... then they can buy the new releases, OR NOT!!
Nothing says they have to smash their previous library. 🤦🏻‍♂️
This is why it's hard to sell old dogs new tricks. Only the new generations will incorporate ATMOS 7.1.4 capabilities into their yet to be written libraries.
God people are stubborn!! Especially the older ones that ALREADY have libraries.
Sorry for the rant, but this resistance to change and with spending on new equipment REALLY irks me.
I applaud you and Joe for continuing to put your money where your mouth is with releasing of your ATMOS excerpts and specifications releases. Its a start.👏👏👏 🫡🫡
