    A more interesting question is whether or not the right type of sounds are played through the ceiling speakers, and at the right time and levels etc.

    Metro Exodus Atmos uses the height channels well. In later levels when enemies are running around on the floors above you, you can hear their footsteps above. Gun shots sound thunderous. It's glorious. Mw2 same story

    Very cool video and interesting topic. I think we’ll get more focus on audio in future games because on the one hand Sony puts more focus into that and also Epic talked about how they used convolution reverb and audio tracking similar to what Raytracing is for visuals in their Unreal Engine 5 demo.
    There is so much great stuff coming this year for home theater gamers. I‘m aiming for a PS5, a new graphics card for my PC, an HDMI 2.1 AVR and an LG OLED with 4k120Hz and VRR as well. But I‘m definitely gonna wait with my home theater setup (AVR and TV) till the new consoles will be out to not run into any compatibility issues later when I can‘t return products anymore that I bought a few months earlier. It‘s just gonna be the waiting game for some months and that really sucks since lockdown is now.

    My Samsung Q90t is going to be delivered next Thursday. I think one downside is that it only has one ARC port. I won't be able to connect my soundbar 9.2.4 if I connect the soundbar. The soundbar is a Nakamichi with Dolby Atmos and DTS-X which do not support eARC. If I connect for example the Xbox directly to the soundbar I will lose a lot of functionality, like 4K 120hz HDR, VRR, etc. I would like to 4K 120hzHDR. VVR, etc and Dolby Atmos at thesametime. Do you have any suggestions in this case? Thanks inadvance.

    Good video covering this topic. VERY little on UA-cam talking about PS audio formats. It shame i want upgrade from 5.1 my Denon reciever to X3800 and add 4 or 6 height channels for 5.1.6. Yet im thinking ....do i really really need it ? It not there yet. Maybe wait because it moving fast with new formats Auro 3d, DTS X, IMAX Enhanced.

      Thanks for the comment! I really want to dive more into audio in gaming as a whole. In terms of upgrading, I can really only say this: Dolby Atmos is currently the most dominant form of object-based audio, and it's not going anywhere.

      @@HomeTheaterGamer hoping the game industry will start incorporating ATMOS and pay more attention. it kinda frustrating when Games like Shadow of War dont even list sound specs, or big titles such as Star Wars BFront 2 is only DD , DTS surround. Maybe we hometheater gamers need get AMPED t let them hear our voices. Otherwise we will be left with free Phone games forced to listen via ear buds.

      If you’re thinking about Atmos for movies as well, then definitely don’t need to wait. It’s been out for years and it’s used everywhere. Additionally, DTS:X is speaker placement neutral, which means if you set up for Atmos you’ll also have DTS:X.

    Good video, I'm building a pc and want to connect it to my Onkyo receiver which has a 5.4.4 and shoots image to a 4k projector. Would my video card bypass audio through the HDMI cable? Or do I need an Atmos sound card?

    • @HomeTheaterGamer
      @HomeTheaterGamer  4 роки тому +5

      You wouldn’t need an additional sound card as your GPU should pass it just fine. Just make sure you have the Dolby Access app installed on Windows (it’s free for home theater use) and that your output is set to Atmos.

      That's an old comment so you've probably already figured it out, but when gaming you want to use LPCM. When watching Blu-ray movies, however, go into the options and change it to bitstream to get Atmos. PlayStation currently doesn't support Atmos for gaming and there is little to no sign that, that is changing any time soon.

    Anyone got a solution for the sound delay on Xbox series x when in Dolby Atmos audio? I understand the codec is the latest one, lossless, and the older Dolby Atmos equipment used the compressed codec so maybe there's no way but if anyone knows please comment below.

    So now we have Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and now also MPEG-H 3D Audio. Any I missed? Sony of course. I do not need it to be Atmos compatible, Atmos is not compatible with anything either. What would be great is if to get Sony software and goods selling they make it free and open or very low cost to get their foot in the door. Probably not, likely Sony exclusive.
    0:52 Sad state indeed. As I understand it, Dolby has highest licensing cost but takes care of all other patents, DTS has okay licensing costs but less support overall for some syrange reason, and then there is MPEG-H which has some real technical upsides but from what I foundhas at least 2 patent pools for you to buy in of which 1 is really needed and the rest not so much, but then you may get sued, I could go on but it is messy to say the least.
    The way I see it, a free open standard would work best for 3D games, not like adding that would cost a lot but then it may be an issue of yet another standard to be supported by any audio receiver with HDMI as they get used by many next to the pc (not like there is any other real option besides AudioDSP which has chips not in supply anywhere, plus a fire destroying the factory of a critical component). But there may be a chance for C-Media (like) chips and stuff like AudioDSP using some open and free standard, after which probably Dolby, DTS _and_ MPEG comes after you.
    If you ask me, objectbased sound should have been the norm for this kind of stuff long ago, along with path traced audio, but no such luck. Ideally it would offer as many channels and bitrate options as MPEG-H, be as open as BSD (easy use in commercial stuff as opposed to linux), be as widely supported and have the hype of Atmos, and work as well on headphones as binaureal, and be overly flexible in speaker placement. I can get stereo close, stereo wide, overhead front stereo, rear stereo, and have no hassle or worries about anything.

    I think the Dolby Atmos app is just a upscaled mixer. Dolby Atmos native would be amazing compared to this. Run a Dolby Atmos demo disc and fire. Up battle front trailer it's breath taking. Dolby Atmos native on games would be killer

    • @HomeTheaterGamer
      @HomeTheaterGamer  4 роки тому +7

      There are native Atmos games on the One X and PC. The Dolby Access app is required even for UHD movies. It’s not just an up mixer. I’ve played demo files on both the One X and PC and they’re the same as if I’m playing them through my UHD player. Definitely not upmixed.

    Is it time for a Part 2?
    I think it's a crying shame that so few Xbox and PC games have ATMOS. It's almost as bad as if they decided not to use rears because reasons.
    I've finally upgrades to a base ATMOS receiver, an Onkyo 7.2 with ATMOS. I know, I know it's an Onkyo but hey, I'm poor so shut up. It'll be set up this week end and the new old PC with Windows 10 will arrive next week. Because Bill Gates decided to screw us with Windows 11 and no DOLBY.
    Yes, there is a Virtual Surround and ATMOS option. It's shit. And it gives some head aches.
    Anyway. I'm rambling. Part 2?

    I don‘t really get why some games only offer this on Xbox while others on PC. Especially with titles like Forza Horizon 4 it‘s a shame that you do not get Atmos on PC because you have to decide between great sound and 4k60fps then.

    • @essential5020
      @essential5020 4 роки тому +2

      Atmos is on windows

    • @ledooni
      @ledooni 4 роки тому +1

      Essential
      Yes, but even though Atmos itself works on PC there are games like Forza Horizon 4 or Assassin’s Creed Origins that only produce Atmos output on the Xbox and vice versa like in Battlefront 2. no real reason but more likely just laziness or different people thinking that different platforms are more important for audiophiles or their specific games. We can just raise our voices and hope that things will change in the future so we don‘t always have to choose the lesser evil between better graphics and more options for controls (mouse and keyboard for shooters) on PC and better audio on Xbox (the scenario that might happen most often).
