it took me a while to notice this the firebenders in this episode are particularly inept compared to ones we've seen before. the troops who believed Momo was earthbending, the warden who threw his own captain off the ship, etc. we're shown throughout the episode that these firebenders are completely incompetent, and not as threatening as they seem. the prisoners are controlled by FEAR, not any actual fighting disadvantage when that fear, and the illusion, is shattered... they win the day. amazing episode for Katara

Loved hearing George Takei voicing the Warden in this. And Momo earthbending was priceless, and Katara's determination to help to the point of extremes gets nicely displayed here.
This episode has always been a personal favorite of mine big time! Katara's speech was so inspirational and it hit even deeper since they didn't have an unrealistic speech= instant motivation for everyone moment. She had to keep pushing and then it made sense she would at least inspire Haru to fight and then it made sense that his dad would defend him and then people started to believe again. Shows that not everything is an instant fix and doesn't always work the 1st time but you should never give up! I also don't know why I laughed so much the 1st time I heard "the leamer is earth bending". It was funny but not so funny that I should have laughed that much. Truely an amazing episode in an amazing show!
I personally don't see the forms of bending as in competition with each other with one being able to trump the other. What you do see is that, depending on the user, the versatility that comes with each person's unique interpretation of their bending creates a push-pull when coming into contact with other forms of bending. It's all heavy on personality and personal philosophy which makes for some interesting moments. I think that also extends quite a bit into why the fire nation is more industrialized and they are a dominant world power, however. This episode also has one of my favorite line readings of all time with "Youuu faillled"

Also each element has their own way of looking at combat. Each element is actually based on a different style of real world martial arts. Air-baguazhang Water-tai chi Earth-hung gar kung fu Fire-Northern Shaolin kung fu Each martial art has their own way of dealing with opponents which ended up forming a lot of the basis for the cultures and personalities of their respective elements.

I'd say air bending could be the most powerful if another nation personality/belief wise used it: the vegetarian, caring, and defensive air nomads just aren't built like that. Imagine an air bending taking your breath away or just throwing you up into the sky to fall to your death.
Since Kayla is on her 2nd superpowers show. I want to recommend shows such as Batman Animated series 1992, Superman animated series 1997, Justice league animated series 2001, Spiderman animated series 1994, X-men the animated series 1992, Spectacular Spiderman 2008, Avengers earths mightiest heroes 2010 and Teen Titans 2003 and my personal selection of Ben10 2005
