There is a theory, and I think it holds up, that the next avatar must fix the biggest problem or failing judgement caused by the previous avatar. Having seen some of Katara now, what do you think Aang’s biggest failure was that Korra might have to fix?
There is a few comics of the fourth book, Air, that they never made into the show. It mostly deals with the aftermath of the war, the fire nation colonies in the earth kingdom, Ang attempting to revive air nomad culture, and also a whole story arch of them going to find Zuko mother which is very interesting. i would recommend to check those comics out. Its only a few books.
To remember at the Azula scene, she is still only 14 years old. This is not a defeted adult but a broken child who never really stood a chance at a normal life. The music is no mistake, this is not a glorious victory but a tragedy, another life destroyed by Ozai.
@@Matyunkin. Well 14 was definitely a marrying age in the era Avatar is set in. Game of Thrones does it best, as Cersei has to basically wait to marry Sansa to her son until after she ‘flowers’. In that era, once a girl ‘flowers’, she is basically an adult. It’s a much crueler era in almost every way. I do love that the Avatar can be male or female. I feel that’s so important. So crucial.
The Zuko and Aang hug at the end always gets me so emotional. Not to mention Aang and Zuko’s scars from lightning parallel one another with Aang’s on his back and Zuko’s on his chest. Such good writing.
that and the Aang and Katara hug hits so hard, like this story began with them two and to see them both at peace and the relief of the war being over and they can just hug and finally be happy is so emotional
Also Aang has a small one on the bottom of his right foot (from the lightning exiting his body) and Zuko has one on his left eye. Yin and Yang on both parts
This is what you get when writers start with a great story and know when to stop. This could easily have been milked to death by a studio exec had it been made today in the streaming age.
Don't worry about having that feeling of not watching it for the first time. I've rewatched ATLA a thousand times and it always feels like a first time. That's the magic of Avatar!
Dont blow smoke up their asses. Nothing ever feels like it did the first time. Avatar is no exception. It does still hold up VERY well for re-watches though. I tend to watch the entire thing through from start to end every couple years. While it has never been as good as it was the first time i have also yet to be disappointed that i dedicated time to watching it again. I do skip the great divide though. Who has time for that?
A lot of people sleep on how much Toph grew in this series. When we met her, she wantes to be independent, as she said " I carry my own weight", seh didn't need help. But in this last episode, she truely rely on her friends. Soka points in the direction of the airships and she just launches them there, Sokka has to pick her up, at the end of it all, she literally puts her life at the hands of Sokka. That is just another Toph than the one we met
I genuinely think that Toph's growth isn't as impactful as the others because she is an already fully realized person.. She wavered sometimes but the only thing she needs is another perspective (ex: a talk with Iroh, a talk with Sokka, etc) to solve her problems. In terms of finding who she really is, she's done that long ago. She is the same capable and independent brat that she is from the start of second book to her Korra appearance, she just doesn't shy away and finally accepts any kind of help now. Her existence is a good contrast for the team as she's the only fully realized individual and she's been a bending master the longest as well.. That's why her arc and growth felt weaker than the others, she's already an established character.
@@hazer5397that's pretty much how I feel about it. I'm okay with Toph not having a major "arc." She doesn't need one. She's already everything she wants and needs to be, so she doesn't have a major journey to take. It's also a neat pointer to her being the "rock" of the group. She's the solid foundation. When everyone else is unsure, she's always the one to chirp in with "well here's the level headed and obvious solution" and they're all like "hmm that's actually a good point"
Azula’s descent started at the betrayal of Mai and Ty Lee. A very subtle detail is in the very next episode. When Azula and Zuko are fighting on top of the airship, she uses her fists to firebend when she’s only ever used two gentle pointing fingers. It shows that she’s less mentally stable in such a subtle way.
Never noticed that one before. It's insane all the subtle details. I've rewatched this show 3 or 4 times, and watched a ton of people react to it on UA-cam, reading through all the comments. And I somehow _still_ come across new details
She was spoiled and groomed from a very young age, and ended up entitled and cruel. But she was always kept in check by her father. Without him, and already feeling betrayed by her friends, there was nothing left but paranoia.
I’m actually so happy that Aang didn’t end up killing Ozai. He found his own way. He was so pressured to kill him but at the same time he wanted to keep the beliefs of his people alive because he was the last Airbender and if he wasn’t going to follow his culture, who would? This is why I love Aang so much
I think the only thing I don't care about that is that energy bending feels a little too deus ex machina to me. Like I know lion turtle is mentioned before, but it just comes a little out of nowhere.
I dont think that aang found his own way, because when you think about it its pure luck. Aang was so unsure and while trying to avoid killing him nearly died himself and opened the way to the earth peoples genocide, if it wasnt for a spiky rock hitting him at the right spot.
@@CimmerianAssassin truth but i think over the many times ive rewatched it, Aang sort of earns it. He pushes against the entire world and his own past lives to not kill Ozai, and he holds onto that belief and is rewarded by the lion turtle for it. I think that thinking about the lion turtle as this primordial entity (which it kind of is, its older than the avatar cycle) then its an easier pill to swallow. I think it IS a deus ex machina but not one that is rewarded unjustifiably if you get what i mean - I think of it as a divine entity finding him and rewarding him for his strength and belief in saving others. The unlocking of the chakra by a coincidental accupressure smash from a rock tho? I got nothing for you there lol.
@@deecee6262he doesn't really push against his past lives. His past lives gave advice that was very ambiguous and vague they didn't say to kill ozai. Roku for example said aang needed to be decisive and stand by his decision which he did, kyoshi said that aang needed to show justice no matter the means which is what happened, kuruk I can't remember his words, yanchen said he needs to put the needs of the world above his spiritual needs which is the only one that I don't see him listening to
Let me just say, as someone who watches this entire series about once a year since it first premiered, you guys have been great in picking up on subtle little details that would take most people 2 or 3 watch-throughs to pick up on. Kudos guys. I really believe this is one of the few shows ever made that has a near perfect ending. it is a rare masterpiece in a world gone mad with politicizing movies, shows and videogames. THIS is how you write a show.
Maybe we watched 2 different shows but Avatar is EXTREMELY POLITICAL. First off the entire world is Asian/Native coded, there’s not a single westernized/white character, so it’s not your typical American series to begin with. Boiled down its essentially an anti-war/ anti- fascist/ anti-right wing authoritarian commentary. There is zero difference between Ozai and right wing leaders like Stalin and Hitler. One used gas chambers and one used firebending… That commentary also extends to Aang who at the end of the day always chose, peace, love, equality, and respect over violence, war, bullying, and hate. It’s really shocking that all these years later and people still aren’t understanding how this show mirrors are actual world SO MUCH. This show definitely leans toward the left of the political spectrum and I wish more people would recognize how intentional that was. The lessons learned from Avatar could be applied to our every day lives.
I agree, I’ve learned a lot from reading many of the comments where others have picked up on things I’ve never noticed, I just love this show so much!!
@@chocolatevanillaswirlwithc9901 well, Ozai ruined them. Ursa was a caring mother, but Ozai was already grooming Azula and she didn't have any power in comparison.
Yes, and I’m strongly inclined to believe Ursa knew and felt massive regret and guilt by the fact that she had a far more comfortable and trusting relationship with Zuko than Azula. Two things point this out clearly: 1. Ursa asks Zuko about Azula’s well-fare , when he finds Ursa in the comics taking place after the season 3 finale in the tv series. It’s very clear that Azula never left her mind and her desperation to be reassured that her daughter had a good life despite living with her failure to protect Azula from Ozai’s narcissistic influence. 2. During Azula’s psychotic break when she was hallucinating the conversation about her, pay very CLOSE attention to what Azula’s words are: “What choice do I have? fear is the only way, trust is for fools….even you fear me” This is what Azula has been telling herself from a developmental age to protect her feelings of hurt and perceived rejection from her own mother. Feelings like that in a development age for a child are not just agonisingly painful but damaging to their psyche and connection with community no matter how strong, smart, or gifted that child is. But because she is deep down strong, gifted, and has been both as a survivor to her own demons and as an enemy against Zuko and the avatars gang, as a kid her ego and will to not live brokenly latched on to her fathers messages of “happiness=power to destroy and spread fear, weakness=peace, trust, true connection and love with other human beings” Azula had to tell herself as a little kid, that the reason her mother hurt and rejected her was because she was afraid of her and her father’s greatness. BUT this not only isn’t the real truth, but Azula KNOWS it isn’t the real truth on a sub-conscious level. When she gets to the “…even if you fear me” part, her image of her mother immediately challenges the narrative by expressing upfront love for her, and Azula emotionally falls apart and breaks the mirror because the delusion she had to produce to survive her childhood was being exposed by her own IMAGE AND MEMORY OF HER MOTHER. Remember, the real Ursa isn’t in this room having the conversation with Azula, this is an image of Ursa being produced by Azula’s internal conflict which is currently in such a state of discord and trauma that her true memories, her worst fears, her ego projections over her own identity, the world, the nature of friendship and why she doesn’t feel she deserves it are smashing into each other. Which means in order for Ursa’s genuine love for her to be Azula’s fear fuelling her trauma thoughts, that MUST mean on some level Ursa displayed loving behaviour towards Azula that conflicted with her perception of herself being emotionally feared and hated by her own mother. My personal opinion is Ozai put EVERYONE in that family unit through hell, and Ursa wanted to foster a loving relationship with Azula, but she was overwhelmed and probably being hurt by Ozai at the same time and Azula was the child he no doubt started grooming earlier. Ozai most likely prevented any efforts from Ursa to get close to her daughter, and when her daughter would ask Ozai why Ursa wasn’t spending time with her, it would’ve presented ozai an opportunity to brainwash her. We see the effects of him grooming Zuko in Zuko’s journey as well, but the grooming was far less effective than what he achieved with Azula because Zuko had some positive family relationships early in his life to shield him. Everyone in that family unit shows the effects of childhood trauma affecting their mental health in various shades of psychological disorders. Zuko (cptsd), Azula (EXTREME cptsd, borderline personality disorder, strong narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies), even Ozai shows psychological trauma to an even darker extent than both his children (malignant narcissistic personality disorder, full-scale psychopathy) the man felt zero difficulty with murdering his own father, clearly showing that positive childhood relationships weren’t just scarce in his life like Azula’s but completely absent (ok this last paragraph was total headcannon from me I admit 😅) @@chocolatevanillaswirlwithc9901
What nobody ever mentions is how insanely controlled Jeong Jeong's flying is. Compared to Azula and Ozai's flying he is just fluent and floating with ease
I always wished we had seen a bit more of his firebending. It is so unbelievably under control compared to pretty much any other firebender we ever see. Considering how much he despised the unpredictability of his own element, it led him to have an iron grip control over it, which would have been so cool to see more of. The two main things we see are his effortless flying and his "walls" of fire that don't actually directly burn or melt the target
It's also a very different style from Iroh's. The latter is more about power, with a sprinkle of water tribe style, whereas Jeong Jeong felt more akin to an air nomad style.
MODERATOR MESSAGE: -Please do not post any Legend of Korra information/spoilers in the comments! S&P read through these comments and we want to maintain their blind reactions for Legend of Korra. All Legend of Korra spoilers will be deleted. Thank you and enjoy the series finale!
Oh, man, witnessing Azula's desperate screams is truly heart-wrenching. I sincerely hope that wherever Azula ends up, she finds some peace and tranquility. In Zuko's case, his exile turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him. Individuals like Zuko and Azula require separation from their toxic environment in order to embark on a journey of healing, both mentally and physically. I genuinely wish that Azula will be granted the same opportunity at some point (Not looking at you comics). Whether or not Azula is suitable for redemption is a separate discussion, one that often divides the ATLA fandom. A significant factor in this debate is whether Azula's behavior was a result of her nature or nurture. Undoubtedly, Azula has committed numerous reprehensible acts in the name of an imperialistic nation. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that, at the end of the day, Azula is merely a fourteen-year-old girl burdened with a father who helped create an environment where Azula believes that she is unable to be loved and therefore her only means of control is to be feared.
Zuko’s character arc has to be one of the best in all television. To have such a complex character in a kids show is truly astonishing. It’s been one of my favorite shows since I was a kid and every time time I watch it, I remember why it hold such a special place in my heart. It was such a pleasure to go through this journey with Spartan and Pudgey! Thank you so much ❤️
Fact that I've seen MANY reactions miss, including you: Zuko DID redirect the lightning. When Iron taught him, he explained that the lightning needs to be lead through the gut and out the other arm, and it can't pass through the heart. For that, they need to be grounded and focused! Zuko was mid-air when he got hit by the lightning, which caused the lightning to go through his heart instead of his gut. BUT, at 25:34 as soon as he hit the ground you can see the lightning leave through his arm and right after that, there's a shot of the lightning going upwards to the sky! Zuko didn't die because he redirected it while he was mid-air, but still got hurt by it.
I always Took it as discharging but not by zuko doing something just that it naturally passes through. But either you control the passing w arms thru gut vs it going through any and everywhere else when nit controlled. Either way lighting can't 'discharge' in the body. In real life it just uses us as a path to the ground. But as many know the step leaders go back up the chain on the discharge
I caught this for the first time watching their reactions, not sure how I didn’t notice it before. I always wondered how zuko didn’t die here but you can see the lightning shoot up into the sky. it seems so obvious in hindsight lol
Ohhh that makes so much more sense! Cause when I first watched it, I was thinking "how did Zuko manage to survive that when Aang was killed by lightning in S2?" Now I get it. It's cause Aang took 100% of the attack, while Zuko was able to redirect some of it.
So regarding Aang taking away the firelord’s bending, the lion turtle’s words were “ to bend another’s energy, your own spirit must be unbendable or you will be corrupted and destroyed” so for Aang the decision not to kill the firelord meant that his spirit was unbendable, unwavered which allowed him to take away the firelord’s bending.
I think it's something along the lines of Aang accepting Ozai, in a sense. He chose to stand by his belief that all life is sacred, and looked at Ozai in the same light, hence Aang looking directly at Ozai when he overcomes Ozai's energy. Even when Ozai threatens to corrupt Aang fully, Aang refuses to shift his belief that someone as evil as Ozai deserves to be given a chance, and THAT is what makes him pure. It's the ultimate benevolence.
fun fact: even though it's not so fun, azula's voice actress (grey delisle) still has not seen the finale episode. it's kind of traumatic for her since she had to think of things to trigger that kind of emotion (I heard but can’t confirm this). she recorded it by herself and was screaming and crying in real life. also, how are you going to say azula is worse than her dad? 💀 just some extra pieces: i think people tend to forget or not realise that in the scene where sokka is holding onto toph, he is the only thing she can feel. and to feel her hand slipping and hear him say "it looks like this is the end" must of been terrifying for her. zuko did actually redirect some of the lightning but also took some of it. you see it shoot into the sky at 25:38 . a lot of people theories that the reason ozai pulls that expression is because he was shocked that zuko kept his promise in joining the avatar and teaching him firebending. since he had never seen that technique done, aside from when zuko did it to him, so he knows zuko must have taught him that. i think the placements of aang and zuko's scars is interesting. as aang's is on his back, and he used to run away. and zuko's is on his chest, as he used to run head first into things. aang uses 2 moves to save his life that zuko and toph taught him: seismic sense and redirecting lightning. and the final bending move showed is aang pushing and pulling the ocean, which is the first move katara taught him to do - push and pull the water. the first word spoken in this series that's not in the intro is sokka saying "it's," and the last word spoken by toph is "perfect," which i think sums up the show perfectly.
The thing about Grey recalling something traumatic is a myth. While it's true that she hadn't seen the episode, she maintains that it was the most fun scene she recorded for the show.
The water bending move Aang used to finally catch Ozai while he was in the Avatar State was similar if not the same as a move he used while practicing with Katara at the start of The Cave of Two Lovers when she's teaching him about the octopus stance.
Yeah her having to dig deep and get emotional was a myth. I actually interviewed her myself back in 2019 and she said it was no problem getting to that point cuz she’s “always about to break down” 🤣🤣 interview is on my channel
Literally one of the best shows on tv. Only one of a handful of shows that nailed the landing. No weird character turns at the end, or macguffins out of nowhere. True perfection.
Idk, first season was super childish imo, and thats basically 1/3 of the show and therefore I wouldnt call it one of the best shows, but thats just my opinion. Plus the finale had to be a little longer imo.
Azula's last scene always makes me cry. It is so amazing and feels so real. I have heard that her actress refuses to watch this episode because of the place she had to go to get this kind of emotion on her recording. As I remember, she even had the recording studio to herself to get it completely right ❤
I think the “she had to go to a dark place” part was a myth people made up (not sure why). I’m pretty sure she actually had fun voice acting this episode. The part about her having not seen it is true though.
Azula descent into madness all begins with mai and ty lee turning on her, remember her only 2 friends betrayed her (good to us but a betrayal to her) then her dad refuses to let her go out and help on the most important day in there lives, she is feeling the abandonment then banishes people before they have the chance to betray her In the first scene of the last episode when you see toph tearing up you have to imagine just how petrified she is, she is a 12 year old child hanging there unable to see anything at all, the only thing she knows is sokka has hold of her hand and he tells her this is the end.
yeah. her descent into madness is what made her unable to rule. If she were sane (and had less of Ozai’s influence) she would have been an incredibly good ruler.
Avatar will forever hold a special place in my heart! I was right in the targeted age range of the show when this came out and quite literally grew up with the show. When most of the other cartoons on TV were purely episodic, ridiculous, and treated it's audience like children, Avatar brought a sense of maturity and respect that I didn't realize that I was starving for in my entertainment. It really set the bar for the shows to come after😍
I am older but my son was born in 06, had no clue abt avatar until like 2010 when he started watching nick. Now fast forward him and his two sisters from '13 and '14 have watched both series and we are all excited as a fam for the next projects. Sadly I think the writers left the Netflix series cause it is gonna feel a lot like m night Shyamalan ls debacle
Completely agree! I was 12 years old when it aired on nick and it was so refreshing to see an animated series like this. Stands the test of time for sure because of the fantastic writing, artistic direction, and voice actor line deliveries!
I was in my final year of high school while season 2 was airing. It was still awesome. By that time i had stopped watching nickelodeon shows completely.....except for avatar.
Honestly azula with her downspiral is always such a tragic thing when you love seeing her being villain now they truly show the tragedy of her mental state that took her to become this villain in never showing weakness
It’s even more tragic when you find out that her voice actress had to recall some deeply personal and horrible traumas to unleash the hyperventilating, screaming, and crying she did when she was defeated. She still refuses to watch that scene because of it
A neat thing I saw about the Agni Kai scene recently, is Zuko uses stances from all 4 elements, not just the stance used for fire bending to become better than Azula. I thought that was pretty cool for them to subtly toss in there
This was such an extremely satisfying finale. Out of all the of the epic scenes, the one that stays with me long after watching this finale was seeing how completely broken Azula becomes. So incredibly sad & heartbreaking.
This is one of the best animated series that have existed, the captivating story, memorable characters, great soundtrack, unforgettable moments has it all a masterpiece.
Iroh not making use of his power actually fits his character and creates a nice parallel between him and his brother. His brother states “I have all the power in the world,” and Iroh likely could too, but he chooses to stay on the sideline and repay his debts to the earth kingdom. Fighting is not how he makes use of his power anymore, he is a leader that brings the rebels together and allows the new generation of benders to take over.
Something really cool to see is that while Zuko is fighting Azula you can see how his travels and knowledge have effected his battle style and he's not only calmer but his moves reflect that of all four types of bending. In an earlier episode Iroh was teaching Zuko about bending and told him how mastering all four elements doesn't just make the avatar stronger but can also make him stronger. This was a nice nod to that and really showed Zuko's growth in battle and character.
it is also because he has learned the original way of firebending and thus isn't relying on anger anymore allowing him to have far better control. him hving an entire team behind him also is a huge help. meanwhile Azula is facing the exact opposite emotional state: she is all alone and is starting to realize her father doesn't care about her and she also is starting to realize fear and intimidation is NOT the best way and actually leaves you alone and vulnerable when it really matters and this is tearing her apart from the inside. in the end Azula is a 14 year old teen girl with the same emotional abusive upbringing as Zuko, but unlike him she bonded with the wrong person: her father.
The two fire nation workers who were chatting before Sokka dropped them out of the bomb bay of the airship were voiced by the creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
A detail I noticed recently for the first time was how every time Zuko had an Agne Kai, he acted selflessly. In his first he refused to fight his father, he chose to show mercy to Zhao in his second, and in his third he sacrificed his body to save Katara
Irohs arc was perfectly finished, he freed the city that broke him trying to capture it while staying away from the big stage. It was not his place and duty to defeat Azula and the Firelord. He had left his marks on any character of our group, giving insight, sharing wisdom. He showed them the way, but they had to walk the path on their own. 🥰
This finale was the single most exciting thing I had ever seen on TV when I was a young teen. The Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula is still my favourite fight in all of avatar, including Legend of Korra. And I love LoK despite some weaker parts.
The thing with Azula is, that without her bending talent/people fearing her and her father's approval, there's nothing left but a confused little girl with a mommy complex.
Fun music fact: the Avatar team used a live orchestra to create the amazing soundtrack for this episode Also, I just realize this, Katara uses a variant of Zuko‘s fire breathing technique to unfreeze herself from the ice she used to freeze Azula P.S. thank you for sharing your avatar journey with us. I started watching you guys since episode one and have had a blast watching you experience the show. I look forward to continuing your avatar journey with Korra!
I recently realized that the water bending move Aang used to finally catch Ozai while he was in the Avatar State at the end of their fight was similar if not the same as a move he used while practicing with Katara at the start of The Cave of Two Lovers when she's teaching him about the octopus stance. A water tendril wrapping around the leg and then grabbing. Even Aang's hand movements were similar.
This last 2 episodes are 1000 rewatchable!... All kind of thoughts comes to mind in apreciation of this journey with Spartan and Pudgey, thru the Avatar animated series... They really did learn to control and master "reaction bending", in a good way of course!... All i have to say is thank you for all of your deep reactions in all episodes!... Thank You for the experience of trying to recapture certain emotions for those who already knew how good this series was!... cult following series like Avatar are always a good bet, in lots of different ways, either from the metrics stand point or even the comunity that is seduced into your channel!... Since the 1st episode, "Sozin's Comet" is what i have been waiting, looking to see the validation and shared experience on how good Avatar is!... Great Journey indeed! Top level emotional reactions indeed, an exemple on how to do it for others who do it in a lesser way! Go Pudgey! Go Spartan!...100k goal is next, and both deserve higher numbers after that!... Anyway, Avatar gave its contribution, and that is great, because and altought with many flaws and far from perfect, it is indeed a special series where the aesthetics are dificult to judge! We all grew into cynical analytical persons, and the world isnt easy many times, but sometimes... Its nice when we feel what Anton Ego feels when tasting the ratatouille soup variation made by Remy in "Ratatouille "... Thank you for recapturing that "light in the box" emotions of Avatar that some of us forgot!
It's great when a show nails the ending like ATLA. The Zuko/Azula battle could not have been done better. I also really love how the last part of the battle is not about who wins but whether Aang will kill the Fire Lord. And, yes, I remember feeling sad when it ended and how it stays with you. Thoroughly enjoyed your ATLA journey & looking forward to Korra. Korra is different from ATLA but still really good. Hope your channel continues to grow.
Before watching I’d like to leave my appreciation for the journey i shared with you guy’s, discovered your channel at the perfect time a few months ago and as a GoT and ATLA fan, I’ve not only got the chance to experience this series again but grew really fondly of your banter/discussion. Keep up the great work, you deserve even more recognition and I’m really looking forward to Breaking Bad and Korra in the future, have a great weekend!
For me the Agni Kai of Zuko and Azula is the most beautiful fight in the series, and the music is amazing, by the way the name of the song is The Last Agni Kai.
The saddest thing for me about Azula's fall is that she had the same EXACT potential for good that Zuko did. But, whereas Zuko couldn't quite decide which "Dragon" to pick, Azula chose the Fear over Love. She probably COULD'VE been the greatest leader in Fire Nation history......had she not been so far gone.
What makes it sadder is there is a question how much it was her choice. Ursa had made it clear even when children she had a focus on zuko. Azula was aware of this on some level with her “my own mother thought I was a monster”. She felt rejected by Ursa and sought approval from Ozai because he was the one rewarding her behavior. She’s still a child and the one primarily focusing her moral compass, is Ozai. Zuko was lucky he had access to Iroh to help recorrect his path with his reinforcement of Zuko’s kindness and consideration of others.
Watching the four part finale then immediately go back and watching the first couple episodes really helps me put into perspective how much Aang, Katara, Sokka, and the show itself develops. Just an incredible journey with endless re-watchability. And some episodes hit different depending on where you are in your own life. As Uncle Iroh once said to Aang, "...if you just keep moving, you will come to a better place".
AHHH Yesss finally !!! I am so excited for this. I'm watching it in my lunch time at work now! So glad you guys loved this show. It's such a special show for me and millions of people, and I'm so excited that we have two new members to the Avatar family!
Iroh blew open the walls of Ba Sing Se with one shot. Walls that had not ever been breached. It may not have been the beast mode you expected, but it was an impossibly powerful move.
I still remember when I first watched this, I was practically kneeling in front of the TV, and I was so upset when Aang had the Firelord pinned and said it was time for him to pay 'the ultimate price'. I was so upset that Aang was going to have to go against everything in his mind and heart, and would kill the Firelord. I was scared that in order to save the world, Aang would have to lose himself... essentially what the conversations with the past Avatars had insinuated. Even the final Avatar he spoke to said the world was more important than his 'spiritual journey'. The idea of Aang being broken, but the world being healed... I was crying. So this was an absolutely wild resolution and I thank the show's creators every time I see this finale and realise they cared about the character's arc this much.
24:08 : the reason this battle is so sad is because it's not the great and perfect hero who comes to take down a vicious tyrant in a glorious and legendary fight. It's the inevitable, messy, vicious and heart-breaking clash of two messed-up teenagers whose terrible respective childhoods left them broken and set them up to be against each other and try to murder each other. Ozai really is one of the worst fathers in fiction. Also notice how Zuko's firebending greatly improved ? Iroh's teaching came to fruition when he encouraged him to learn from other bending techniques to become stronger : - during the battle he stays on the same spot, blocks and takes Azula's attacks head on, like an earthbender - his moves became more fluid and he switches from defense to attack like a waterbender, not to mention lightning redirection - he also throws in some dynamic jumps and moves like an airbender to give his fire more speed.
Hahaha, we really appreciate that! It's definitely great to have a fellow Aussie in the community as well!!! Thanks so much for your support 😊 it genuinely means the world ❤
I'm so happy i found you guys when i did. Following you two on your GOT and Avatar journey has truly been amazing. Can't wait to follow you guys into Korra
Arguably Zuko’s story is the most emotional and intriguing. At the start, besides Iroh, he is alone, angry, and insecure. At the end, he finds himself and his honor, revitalized his firebending, and has friends to support him and Azula ends up alone, angry, and insecure. I’m so excited to follow your Legend of Korra journey. While it’s not everyone’s favorite, I really love it and the new characters.
I’m so excited for the Netflix live adaptation of this. Casting looks very promising. I know it won’t be the same as the animated version has a lot more artistic freedom to tell the story.
I feel like once they done with korra (will definitely take a few months) the live action will come out. I hope they react to it too but they’ll probably be tired of this universe by then😭
@@joeyrosa648 apparently they had already helped write a majority of the episodes before leaving, plus everyone on the show loves the original series so I'm not too worried
I would've preferred a continuation of our original crew with the post show adventures (like the comic stuff) because a more mature show with the original creators would have been riveting. I think a live retelling is pretty unnecessary as the OG is just timeless and perfect, what more could you add to it?
This finale is one of the best I've ever seen on any show. Everything was perfect. And don't worry Pudgey! A lot of fans wanted Katara and Zuko to end up together. Thanks for the great reaction!
I’m fairly certain that if Azula had been mentally sane she would have won against Zuko, but the majority of the fandom isn’t ready for that discussion 👀 Additional note: And Zuko only agreed to an Agni Kai after he saw Azula’s mental state.
Maybe more like 50/50 since the fight at the air temple they ended in a raw, and it just happened to be right after Zuko mastered the true way of fire bending. But if u consider the Azula spin-off comic then yes, she's literally a beast in that comic tho, idk y they build up Zuko so much over the series to let him lose miserably to her. Like srslly, she can still manipulate her lighting at her finger tips while she had been chi - blocked by Ty Lee ☠️
I'm pretty sure the ending dilema of Aang having to choose between saving the world and his pacific ways are actually the orginal idea for the show. I think the writers woke up one day saying : "What if we had a chosen one story arc with the chosen one being non-violent?" And from there, they got inspired by the Shaolin Monks philosophy. And following that, they got interested in other martial arts and their philosophy and created the core of the show. This is such a great storyline, such a master piece!
Being an og watcher from 2005 till 2008 waiting for the episodes every week I love this show I’m so happy it got so popular again this past couple of years glad I found this channel and got to re watch it with you guys
Imagine being 12 years old and watching this on tv and experiencing it for the first time and not comprehending the impact. And then coming back to it 12 years later when it hits again and just gushing all over it again with new found appreciation that magnifies it 10 fold.
I always recommend anyone who loved this series to continue with Legend of Korra. It's not nearly as emotional and loved as atla but it is still definitely worth a watch
I love how during Zuko and Azula's agni kai, the music isn't epic as you'd expect. Instead it's very somber. This isn't an incredible showdown between good and evil, this is a heartbreaking clash between brother and sister.
13:59 that's the power of Iroh right there, and is glorious 23:57 is one of the fights you know is necessary but don't want to be there, the whole scene is beautifuly done and the ost is unique
I can't believe it's over. I think many of us when this first released had the same experience. The whole entire family had to get together on the couch just to see how this would end in the four part finale. I don't think there'll be anything else like it.
"They did not deserve to exist in this world, in my world. Prepare to join them, prepare to die!!" This is coldest villain line from animation history as far as I can remember
I love that Zuco and katara had a sibling relationship. Because it was kind of like the sister he should have gotten but didn't. In fact, if you can trust katara's family situation with zucos, you see how different they were raised. She had a loving father who could not be available, and a brother that she fought with but loved. Alternately, zuko had a father and sister who couldn't stand him.
Azula started with everything, Zuko started with nothing Zuko ended with everything, Azula ended with nothing First episode, The Boy in the Iceberg Final episode, Avatar Aang Absolutely untouchable series, even to today
In my personal opinion this is one of the greatest finales for any show. Wraps up everything and finishes out the journey. As for Azula, this episode is where I think most people begin to like her. This and ember Island are the only times that the writers actively remind you that this girl is exactly that. A young girl who has been broken by her upbringing. Especially when thinking of Zuko who has a similar story but her never getting the chance to redeem herself. It just makes you incredibly sad for this poor broken girl. Also hate to be the bearer of bad news but considering the avatar cycle being reincarnation based, Aang has passed by the staff of Korra. I won’t comment on the others though. It was a pleasure watch g you guys through this journey, onto the next
I've watched ATLA all the way through so many times! It never loses that special feeling. Azula finally cracking at the end was a sad but satisfying end. I feel like she might have been more powerful than Ozai, but when she lost her circle of trusted friends she buckled under the stress and paranoia. Korra is a really different show so I'm looking forward to you guys watching it through.
The first time i watched the finale and the final Agne Kai between Zuko & Azula actually made me tear bend. Its so beautifully done. The animation, the sound design on the flames. The color. Everything was just perfect.
We saw what Iroh and Jeong Jeong can do but Ozai took it to the next level. Pakku and Bumi and Piandao did great against the Sozin comet fire benders. I wonder where Paku get the water.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'Iroh trained so hard and we didn't get to see him unleash'. You did see the giant firebaal burst through the wall, right?
They wanted to see him really pop off I think, which is fair. Who doesn't want more Iroh in their lives? Though in my opinion, him being able to absolutely shatter the wall that had stopped his original siege of the city is kind of poetic.
I still remember that the first time i watched it as a kid, i missed the last episode and for years thought that Zuko and Katara were together in the end
Been a great journey. I just want to give Azula her flowers. She was just too smart and too skilled for her enemies. The characters in this show who could go toe to toe with her on her best day aren't more than 3 and Zuko isn't even one of them. The writers knew to numb her down for the final battle. The only ATLA villain on the level of LOK villains. Long live the princess.
this series is wonderful. It has a unique character development and starts and ends in the best way. some things to keep in mind, the first chapter is called the boy on the iceberg and the last one is called the avatar aang showing us the path that our protagonist traveled. Another detail is that Zuko and Aang have the same scar, showing us that they were always the two peotagonists of this series and that they are the two sides of the same coin. like I said wonderful series and thanks for sharing this with us. ps: I used the google translator because I don't speak English so sorry if it's not so well understood.
I think the most telling scene in regards to Azula was "You can't treat me like Zuko!" She spent her whole life trying to avoid falling out of favour of Ozai because she's watched how Zuko has been treated. What a terrible family.
It's easy to forget, but Azula is a victim of her father as much as Zuko is. She may not have been a kind person from the start but Ozi made her a monster.
Congratulations on finishing ATLA! :) Now you know why it is THE BEST animated series ever made, bar none, still to this day! Very hyped to see you get into Korra's story next, and hopefully all the new series, animations and movies that will be coming out in the coming years.
I'm so glad that you guys enjoyed this show and ended up loving it. I was a teenager when I watched ATLA and I always felt safe and understood when I watched it. I remember being so sad for like six months after the finale realizing that I would probably never find another show that made me feel that way again. I also really loved how this show never talked down to its target audience and wrote the story with the confidence that the children watching could handle the difficult themes, emotions and tough lessons that needed to be learned. To me this is not a kids show but a story that people of all ages can relate to and learn from. Zuko's redemption arc is one of the best I've ever seen in a TV show, and I always go back to it when I'm feeling lost and need Uncle Iroh's advice. The Agni Kai in my opinion is in the top three animated fights I've ever seen. For all the kids that grew up with this show and all the new fans watching it now, this finale is perfect. The only thing that I can remember people being upset by was that we never got a true conclusion to what happens to Zuko's mom. The amount of frustration the fandom felt when Zuko asked that question and then it cutting away to the next scene was palpable for awhile. Fortunately, after the show ended the creators co-wrote multiple graphic novels that continue the story leading up to the events of Legend of Korra. One of those was called The Search which resolved that plot point, so everyone felt content after that. It's definitely worth a read if you guys are interested.
39:38 The lionturtle says, 'To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable' Aang received this knowledge and visit from the lionturtle, Aang of all Avatars, because Aang remained true to himself - he didn't allow his spirit to bend, no matter what other people said. Even his past lives couldn't convince him to stray from his own path - he will not kill the Firelord.
Zutara is very delusional imo. The creators to this day maintain that they viewed every interaction as friendly. Its OBVIOUS that it was always gonna be aang and katara, literally since episode 1. Katara even has moments where SHE EXPLICITLY is shown to want aang, specifically the cave of two lovers. Idk how anyone can even think zutara was a posibility.

That's great to hear! I look forward to checking it out
To remember at the Azula scene, she is still only 14 years old. This is not a defeted adult but a broken child who never really stood a chance at a normal life. The music is no mistake, this is not a glorious victory but a tragedy, another life destroyed by Ozai.
Wow, i always think she was older, based on design, skill and her leadership status.
@@Matyunkin assuming the age of animated girls is always a dangerous endeavour
@@spyling800 indeed.
So crucial.
Ozai did nothing wrong
The Zuko and Aang hug at the end always gets me so emotional. Not to mention Aang and Zuko’s scars from lightning parallel one another with Aang’s on his back and Zuko’s on his chest. Such good writing.
that and the Aang and Katara hug hits so hard, like this story began with them two and to see them both at peace and the relief of the war being over and they can just hug and finally be happy is so emotional
I hope Zuko also had a scar on his foot like Aang has. That would be even better writing. ❤❤❤
Also Aang has a small one on the bottom of his right foot (from the lightning exiting his body) and Zuko has one on his left eye. Yin and Yang on both parts
This show is just brilliant🔥
This is what you get when writers start with a great story and know when to stop. This could easily have been milked to death by a studio exec had it been made today in the streaming age.
Don't worry about having that feeling of not watching it for the first time. I've rewatched ATLA a thousand times and it always feels like a first time. That's the magic of Avatar!
So true lol that feeling comes back. Plus they have legend of korra.

Book 1, Episode 1: Boy in the Iceberg
Book 3, Episode 21: Avatar Aang
Charclacter development
God I love this show. The whole team for this franchise is amazing for how much effort they put in
@@hazer5397that's pretty much how I feel about it.
Yeah and how she just started attacking the gang without a clear plan.
This is why I love Aang so much
Me too. If Aang did end up killing Ozai, I feel like he would have lost a part of himself and been a very different person after that.
One used gas chambers and one used firebending…
That commentary also extends to Aang who at the end of the day always chose, peace, love, equality, and respect over violence, war, bullying, and hate.
@@mandoz353 Not to mention that Ba Sing Se is definitely a criticism of CCP China.
The Azula vs Zuko fight is a tragedy, not a victory and the music reflects this
The tragedy was katara not torturing azula to death 😂
@@arceuspokemon7545Well azula wasnt born psychotic she could have been close with zuko but their parents ruined them
@@chocolatevanillaswirlwithc9901 well, Ozai ruined them. Ursa was a caring mother, but Ozai was already grooming Azula and she didn't have any power in comparison.
@@nahqiv good point but she in the comics it often shows her giving affection to zuko and less to azula even when ozais not in the way
Yes, and I’m strongly inclined to believe Ursa knew and felt massive regret and guilt by the fact that she had a far more comfortable and trusting relationship with Zuko than Azula. Two things point this out clearly:
You won't be thinking about it for weeks, you'll feel it for YEARS
What nobody ever mentions is how insanely controlled Jeong Jeong's flying is. Compared to Azula and Ozai's flying he is just fluent and floating with ease
Yes
I always wished we had seen a bit more of his firebending. It is so unbelievably under control compared to pretty much any other firebender we ever see. Considering how much he despised the unpredictability of his own element, it led him to have an iron grip control over it, which would have been so cool to see more of. The two main things we see are his effortless flying and his "walls" of fire that don't actually directly burn or melt the target
Always stuck with me how he moves like a conductor leading the orchestra - definitely in control
It's also a very different style from Iroh's. The latter is more about power, with a sprinkle of water tribe style, whereas Jeong Jeong felt more akin to an air nomad style.

In the comics they liberate her to go find their mother. AFAIK She beats Zuko twice but then is taken down.
@@MrShroomedi hope she's not taken down by Zuko because he never shows any talent greater than hers
A quest for redemption is a heavy burden for Azula.
if i am not wrong, in 2025, azula will be getting her own movie with the redemption arc
By the start of “The Search” comic, Azula was sent to a psychiatric hospital due to her hallucinations of her mother
But as many know the step leaders go back up the chain on the discharge
exactly!! nobody ever realizes this
I caught this for the first time watching their reactions, not sure how I didn’t notice it before. I always wondered how zuko didn’t die here but you can see the lightning shoot up into the sky. it seems so obvious in hindsight lol
Ohhh that makes so much more sense! Cause when I first watched it, I was thinking "how did Zuko manage to survive that when Aang was killed by lightning in S2?"
Now I get it. It's cause Aang took 100% of the attack, while Zuko was able to redirect some of it.
@ unsaidexile Also Iroh only got hi by blue fire not lightning in The chase episode. It's the fact it hit exposed skin that wounded Iroh.
Even when he had the firelord 'checkmated' he still choose not to kill him.
just some extra pieces:
i think people tend to forget or not realise that in the scene where sokka is holding onto toph, he is the only thing she can feel. and to feel her hand slipping and hear him say "it looks like this is the end" must of been terrifying for her.
zuko did actually redirect some of the lightning but also took some of it. you see it shoot into the sky at 25:38 .
a lot of people theories that the reason ozai pulls that expression is because he was shocked that zuko kept his promise in joining the avatar and teaching him firebending. since he had never seen that technique done, aside from when zuko did it to him, so he knows zuko must have taught him that.
i think the placements of aang and zuko's scars is interesting. as aang's is on his back, and he used to run away. and zuko's is on his chest, as he used to run head first into things.
aang uses 2 moves to save his life that zuko and toph taught him: seismic sense and redirecting lightning. and the final bending move showed is aang pushing and pulling the ocean, which is the first move katara taught him to do - push and pull the water.
the first word spoken in this series that's not in the intro is sokka saying "it's," and the last word spoken by toph is "perfect," which i think sums up the show perfectly.
grey is such a queen. She can voice any age rage. I think she voiced young azula and the mother of Kya’s murderer. She’s amazing.
The thing about Grey recalling something traumatic is a myth. While it's true that she hadn't seen the episode, she maintains that it was the most fun scene she recorded for the show.
@@Dez861 thank you for telling me. i heard people saying it but could never confirm if it was actually true!
@@TedSifudid you just call a show made for CHILDREN that was on Nickelodeon and KIDS
Channel childish?
lion turtle energy bending is kindof a macguffin to be fair
Azula's last scene always makes me cry. It is so amazing and feels so real. I have heard that her actress refuses to watch this episode because of the place she had to go to get this kind of emotion on her recording. As I remember, she even had the recording studio to herself to get it completely right ❤
I think the “she had to go to a dark place” part was a myth people made up (not sure why). I’m pretty sure she actually had fun voice acting this episode. The part about her having not seen it is true though.
Azula descent into madness all begins with mai and ty lee turning on her, remember her only 2 friends betrayed her (good to us but a betrayal to her) then her dad refuses to let her go out and help on the most important day in there lives, she is feeling the abandonment then banishes people before they have the chance to betray her
In the first scene of the last episode when you see toph tearing up you have to imagine just how petrified she is, she is a 12 year old child hanging there unable to see anything at all, the only thing she knows is sokka has hold of her hand and he tells her this is the end.
yeah. her descent into madness is what made her unable to rule. If she were sane (and had less of Ozai’s influence) she would have been an incredibly good ruler.
Zuko getting coronated -- much happy tearbending. You did it, ZuZu. You really did it.
The firelord power didnt get to azula’s head. She realized how alone she was and was blaming others for it.
She still refuses to watch that scene because of it
The music in the figh between Zuko and Azula is called Last Agni Kai, a very fitting name.
Fire Lord Ozai also played a small role in an independent film from the 1970’s.
I think I've heard of that movie...didn't it have a couple low budget sequels?
The voice actor?
@@Kjsevv yes, they're making jokes about Mark Hammill[sp], who was an actor in _Star Wars_
@@TheGamingLegendsOfficial but nothing is wrong with that tho
@@Kjsevv nobody is saying there was?
Azula's crying and sobbing in the end hits me harder than any scene in the show. So freaking sad
Good point actually
The thing with Azula is, that without her bending talent/people fearing her and her father's approval, there's nothing left but a confused little girl with a mommy complex.
this is emotional 🙂 thank you for sharing your avatar journey with us you guys !
Fun music fact: the Avatar team used a live orchestra to create the amazing soundtrack for this episode
Also, I just realize this, Katara uses a variant of Zuko‘s fire breathing technique to unfreeze herself from the ice she used to freeze Azula
P.S. thank you for sharing your avatar journey with us.
😄❤️🙏🏼🥳 it was an epic journey! we're glad you enjoyed it with us!!
ozai is voiced by mark hamill, who has an impressive catalogue of voice acting, but is probably most famous for playing luke skywalker
And the Joker
It's great when a show nails the ending like ATLA. The Zuko/Azula battle could not have been done better. I also really love how the last part of the battle is not about who wins but whether Aang will kill the Fire Lord. And, yes, I remember feeling sad when it ended and how it stays with you.
Thoroughly enjoyed your ATLA journey & looking forward to Korra. Korra is different from ATLA but still really good.
Hope your channel continues to grow.
The voice actor of azula was actually left alone to record. She was legitimately having a breakdown channeling the trauma in her life.
Before watching I’d like to leave my appreciation for the journey i shared with you guy’s, discovered your channel at the perfect time a few months ago and as a GoT and ATLA fan, I’ve not only got the chance to experience this series again but grew really fondly of your banter/discussion.

Azula vs Zuko is hands down one of the, if not THE best scene in Television History.
Not to mention she is also Sozin's and Roku's great-granddaughter
I meannn idk where u get the idea that she couldve been the goat. By ur logic, everyone has the potential to be the goat lmao
@josechamu240 she's one of the world's most intimidating fire benders and a brilliant and proven tactician?
@@josechamu240shes a prodigy at firebending and lightning. A genius in strategy.
Iroh's teaching came to fruition when he encouraged him to learn from other bending techniques to become stronger :
- during the battle he stays on the same spot, blocks and takes Azula's attacks head on, like an earthbender
- his moves became more fluid and he switches from defense to attack like a waterbender, not to mention lightning redirection
- he also throws in some dynamic jumps and moves like an airbender to give his fire more speed.

Zuko and Katara is such a surface level ship and I cannot believe people seriously like them together.
Kataang ❤❤❤
It ain't that serious
Man, this was more emotional than I thought it would be. Nice ending.
It's not even arguable
Fun fact:
Whenever an Avatar becomes fully realized, a demonstration of all four elements is performed. You'll notice this in Roku's flashback.
I’m so excited for the Netflix live adaptation of this. Casting looks very promising. I know it won’t be the same as the animated version has a lot more artistic freedom to tell the story.
I was super hopeful, but now the original creators have left the show due to “creative differences”. Really doesn’t bode well
I feel like once they done with korra (will definitely take a few months) the live action will come out. I hope they react to it too but they’ll probably be tired of this universe by then😭
@@joeyrosa648 apparently they had already helped write a majority of the episodes before leaving, plus everyone on the show loves the original series so I'm not too worried
I actually think it is a terrible idea for them to do a live action of this. It wont end well.
"You can't fight fire benders with fun!"
"This is your captain speaking, we have a very special birthday to celebrate"
I’m fairly certain that if Azula had been mentally sane she would have won against Zuko, but the majority of the fandom isn’t ready for that discussion 👀
Additional note: And Zuko only agreed to an Agni Kai after he saw Azula’s mental state.
That was confirmed. Azula would destroy everybody except maybe aang in the avatar state
literally, even Iroh said it
Maybe more like 50/50 since the fight at the air temple they ended in a raw, and it just happened to be right after Zuko mastered the true way of fire bending.
The question I’ve always wondered: did Ozai only lose because of a random unlucky pointy rock? 😂
Yeah, most of the fandom watched the show, instead of obsessing over how their favorite villain should have won.
The music is extremely good in these last four episodes because they got a full orchestra to record them
I'm pretty sure the ending dilema of Aang having to choose between saving the world and his pacific ways are actually the orginal idea for the show.

13:59 that's the power of Iroh right there, and is glorious
23:57 is one of the fights you know is necessary but don't want to be there, the whole scene is beautifuly done and the ost is unique
Azula started with everything, Zuko started with nothing
Zuko ended with everything, Azula ended with nothing
First episode, The Boy in the Iceberg
Final episode, Avatar Aang
Absolutely untouchable series, even to today
I love how he just geeks out with the biggest grin in his face.
I think pudgey is getting at water being a conducter to electricity so zapping water is lethal
Watched this in my late teens and just rewatched with my nephews. So fun to see the same reactions a generation later
47:55 Aang also learned from his mistakes and waited for Katara to kiss him this time 😊
38:43 I love seeing the genuine fear on Ozai’s face. Now he knows what it’s like to be defenseless and at one’s mercy.
This show means so much to me. I’m so happy you both ended up loving it. Followed your ATLA journey from the beginning. Cheers 🎉
39:38 The lionturtle says, 'To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable'
Aang received this knowledge and visit from the lionturtle, Aang of all Avatars, because Aang remained true to himself - he didn't allow his spirit to bend, no matter what other people said. Even his past lives couldn't convince him to stray from his own path - he will not kill the Firelord.
I feel you pudgy, zutara could have been a powerful path to take but I think it may have distracted from the main story they were trying to tell
46:55 that look Iroh gave Zuko. Don’t forget that Zuko is terrible at making tea, but Iroh never told him that 😂😭
Zutara is very delusional imo.
