I saw Eartha Kitt years ago in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill and this checks out.
Eartha also had problems with the government over a statement she made at the white house regarding black men in the Vietnam war
Hard to believe this is Andra Day's acting debut. STUNNING PERFORMANCE. She completely embodied Billie Holiday. She humanized a legend. You could see her vulnerabilities and her strength; her beauty and her flaws. I always believed Lady Day to be a FORCE as a Black Woman, and Unique as a singer. But you really get a sense of the entire person thru Andra's
portrayal. KUDOS. She earned an OSCAR with this.
She was absolutely fantastic. She brought it from the inside out. The way it should be.

@@debramartin2854 that was a quote from the end of the movie. What is no one aloud to quote the movie now? Or sing the songs. It's a devastating powerful movie. When someone comes along and is touched by the message don't shame them. I only hope everyone feels that way about Strange fruit and about lady day. She wanted to be remembered that was important to her and that song was important to her as well.
@@debramartin2854 the statement comes from the documentary film, one of Billie Holiday's friends made the statement which was expressed to mean "they tried to stop her from singing the song, but, either Billis Holiday said it directly to a cop or one of her friends said: "your grandchildren gonna be singing that song" "the song's value will reverberate for centuries to come"...

Watch on UA-cam the BBC Billy holiday documentry Reputation Billy holiday, they have horrific photos of real lynchings and people all Happy watching, it's so shocking but people need to see the truth . Just disgraceful what happened in this country
Watched it on Hulu. I’m not going to spoil it, but it’s such an amazing film. The ending had me in tears and I couldn’t stop crying.

I just watched this and I am completely amazed. I even researched whether she was singing or lip syncing and this is her voice. She said she actually started smoking, drinking cold water, screaming, and so much more to get that grit in her voice. My God, Today!!! Simply incredible!

This song is not about comparing Billie to Andra. Billie Holiday sang Strange Fruit with a hopeless vulnerability, Andra Day is delivering the song with an anger and a reckoning, and we better listen.

This song embodies the rage Lady Day must have felt seeing her people treated so cruelly and unjustly. Andra Day performs this song in such a way that makes us feel the rage, hurt, and humiliation and leaves us wondering, what kind of people could commit such unconscionable crimes against humanity.
Andra is the consummate Artist.. I found her 8 years ago on You Tube she brought her spirit to meet Amy Winehouse and she can sing anything.. I told my closest friends that ANDRA DAY will be a shining star 🌟 and I love when my instincts are correct her beauty.. she wore brown contact lenses and like Robert Deniro changed her body to meet the needs of the script.. Andra Day is a real artist and often Oscar Winners sometimes never work again I think that she will work until she decides not to.. I pray that I get to work with her someday.... I have been praying for her since the day I first saw her she is a brilliant artist who in my book 📖 has a lot of GOOD THINGS COMING..Thank You Miss Day for your excellent work Blessings to you
The unfortunate truth of the matter is this is still happening in today's society! Lynchings and other forms of hate crimes are still being committed. Did you know that despite many takes on an Anti-lynching bill, not a single one has yet to become national law?!? The most recent bill I'm aware of is the Emmitt Till Anti-lynching Act. We'll see how it goes.

I clicked this expecting a cover. What I found was nothing less than transcendence. This song is always heavy, but Miss Andra Day gives it a weight which I dare say hasn't been seen since 1959. Sublimely powerful.

WOW! I just watched you all in the movie, and I was furtively impressed. Everyone gave evocative demonstrations of their characters, I felt like I was pulled into the era, experiencing the pain, the humor, the angst, the empathy of the time, the anger, and the horror, that oppression creates inside, along with the frustration of feeling tied up, wanting to do something, yet, trapped inside a warp of time. It makes me love her, all the more, and want to know more about her. Reading her history, your company did this fictional, yet, (close), but loosely based on truth story is excellently told.
