I think you might. My little girl was bringing me books on African history, highlighted and annotated passages she thought I would find interesting when only 10yo. She’s not so little anymore. Many of our kids are so bright and talented we just have to nurture them. The future will be bright when it's in their hands, we have to give them the tools for success.

I’m glad they didn’t make this too “beautiful” this needs to be as dirty and cruel as it sounds. She did it perfectly. Nothing to be romanticized here, not a song to show off or to make it sound more appropriate.

    POWER FULL
    Lyrics:
    Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

4,000 is sad and too many. But, it would be better to sing a song about the hundreds of millions that have died in concentration camps to socialism. Or the hundreds of millions more that have died to starvation under socialism. They also died more recently, so it's more relevant.

Kim Jones/del ham..... It is not Billie Holiday's song. It was written by a white Jewish Communist in the 30's. This version is a weak attempt at mimicking Billie's. I don't think anyone can hold a candle to her version and especially given what was going on at the time made it ever the more poignant, but Jeff Buckley does a pretty solid version.

I'm in awe and unable to adequately express the compassion I feel for families who have been forced to endure such horror because of their heritage, because of the color of their skin. I firmly agree that in order to heal you must first be able to tell the truth about your history of racial terror and injustice.

I'm so glad to see her portray Billie Holiday. Cassandra Batie is Eleonora Fagan reincarnated.
Never forget Lady Sings the Blues (1972). I'm sure some of you aren't old enough but it stars the incomparable Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams. Let's make it rise again as well.

This video , this song . Shows the resilience of our people fir something soooo beautiful in the fork of music to come from such pain , hatred and inhumanity is astounding . Rise up ye mighty race! Accomplish what you will .

      "Our" people?
      There's just people mane.
Every nation, and every race, has done something horrible. Tribalism is the vehicle for dehumanization.

This song was written by a white Jewish Communist 80 years ago. Who makes up your "tribe"? I think there is a lot more out there that can actually be done besides covering a song to better the "tribe".

This song is very moving and empowering. You are right in order to heal from this we must tell the truth and no mater who it was. They were and are still important today because no one deserved the life they were forced into. These people died and their story needs to be told by someone. It is important to be thankful to the ones that ended slavery and the racial things that were happening because we could have been them.

This was beautiful. And so was the message. A flower that grows from blood soaked earth is a powerful message. Remember these things & when done in the right way..all ears can hear..all hearts can feel. Find your moment..don’t ever forget the sufferings of the innocent. When done with civility..real tears on all eyes can fall.

I so wish there had never been any reason for such a song. I brought my 15 year old Son here and to Billie Holidays original to educate him on a history that isn’t talked about enough in UK schools and should be. This version still stirs and shocks your soul like Billie’s always has. An amazing version of a story that has to be told. 😘Xxx

Strange that you are using a song written by a white Jewish Communist to tell your story. I would think that it would be considered white washing or something like that cause it is a black thing and those white people just can't understand.

    • @Shay45
      @Shay45 6 років тому

      Robert M
Remember back then black voices were silenced or ignored. The media was 90 something percent white.
White voices (or Jewish one in this case) were not.
Because of this people used whites to help get their message across to the masses.
