TIP! If you are a schmuck (like me) and need to drop your gas tank while lying on your back underneath your vehicle. I used 3 ratchet straps, 2 across the tank (in the factory, steel band locations and 1 pulled around the back of the tank. That third strap allows you to keep the tank from sliding rearward as you lower it. I used a jack to do the lowering and the straps as a limiter, to lift it back up, the straps did most of the work. (the straps also make it easier because you can move the jack out of your way if necessary. As you will see it is necessary to lower the tank to access the connections but you can't lower the tank until you disconnect them... Yeah, exactly! Be very careful and lower it slowly! The fuel pump output has almost zero slack and the rollover (?) valve (large conn. on top at the back end of tank) passes over a cross member and therefore can easily be damaged (disconnect it before lowering more than an inch or so) . I used the bottom of a plastic water bottle and the factory hose clamp to keep fuel from pouring out of the filler tube after removing the hose. The 3rd strap is the key, without it the tank will continually slide rearward and get hung up on the rear end and will try to slide off the jack. It's tedious since you have to, many times, release the straps and re-adjust but is better than breaking the connectors or dropping the tank. Good Luck!
Got the part from you guys and the how to from this video. Everything went flawless. Didn't think i would be able to do it, but i just went for it and did it in 4.5hrs. Thankyou all!
Good info, thanks. I have a 2003 Chevy Suburban Z71 throwing a code with CE Light. Texas won't even START an inspection if you have the Check Engine light on, regardless of what it is. Code points to this cluster on top of tank, and local dealer ONLY WANTS $1,300 to fix it ! And that was 3 years ago. Kinda wishing I had a workspace to do this in. One independent mechanic suggested cutting a hole in the floor pan dead center under the rear passenger seat for quicker easier access to unit, after removing the seat of course. Then just tack weld it back down when done replacing unit an hour later without hassle of dropping tank. He said it's MUCH FASTER and EASIER that way !
I bought my fuel pump from 1AAuto after watching this video, as I have a 2003 Suburban. This video was instrumental in getting my truck running again. I would offer one suggestion to the video though at around the 6:45 mark. I did not realize the top of the pump was spring loaded and moved up and down, as the new part was very stiff compared to the original pump. It did not appear to fit at first, and I was very apprehensive about applying that much pressure to the part for fear of breaking it.
@@Vegasman77704 do you remember under what part of the floor the pump is located? I did that in the back of a jeep grand cherokee too. So much quicker and easier.
Thanks you saved my butt today. If there was a warning about the pump being spring loaded and needing compression i missed it. I didnt have access to a lift but i could get my Burban high enough on jack stands that i just lowered back end and changed out pump while still partially hanging. The one thing i did also is drop spare tire and rear of drive shaft to make room to get it done
My sub went crazy every time the narrator started talking lol. Thanks for the video though, you guys really make awesome content I find myself coming back to.
Did mine in 3.5 hours . Did it on jackstands and used a motorcyle lift to lower it . One difference though , mine had a line inside the tank for a remote pickup .
Great video, gives me confidence to tackle mine. I thought my truck was rusty but wow, the one is this video looks exceptionally bad. Those strap bolts looked like they’d snap off if you tried to remove them.
Fuel tank should be empty. I connected an electric fuel pump to the fuel filter to pump the gas out. Gas is over 8lbs. per gallon and that's a huge tank.
Wld be nice if i had a lift. It really seems like this could be done without completely removing the tank tho? If u lower the back end enough shouldn't u have access?
My metal lines are rusted and frozen into the nylon lines do you have a kit to repair the lines if I need to cut them? I ordered my fuel pump from you guys last week and its here now and unable to install it...guessing gm assumed they would fail more often not worried about that issue
You might like to redo this tutorial. Your tutorials are awesome, however their is a much easier way to do this... don't snap the lines off the tank, only the big one to evap. Disconnect them from the chassis and evap instead... makes job MUCH easier.
No can do. The speed nut on the front strap spins freely - so the bolt is mostly out, but I can't loosen or tighten the bolt. So much for replacing the pump and fuel lines, not to mention the brake lines on mine are atrocious. Any ideas?
This is an excellent video. Thank you for posting this. On a related note, I replaced my fuel pump and sending unit on my 95 Chevy Suburban about 5 months ago... about two weeks ago, the gas gauge stopped going below a quarter tank. Now it will not go below half a tank... From what I've read, the Sending Unit seems to be bad.... Is there a way I can test the Sending Unit?
I have a 2003 Suburban and all the Gauges started giving really weird readings as they slowly died over a 2 year period back around 2009. Kinda pissed me off, but it was the actual Gauge Motors going out, not the tank sending unit. But definitely test unit first if not too $$$$. I'm in need of a Cluster Gauge repair service now !
SHOE GOD 23 unfortunately you’ll need to use the number on the side of that hose and enter it into the amazon search bar. It’ll most likely say it doesn’t fit your vehicle but it will. You won’t be able to find that part in the store and a dealer will charge a fortune for it
I have a 2001 Chevy Suburban 1500, 5.3, would my Fuel Pump & Sending unit have 1 or 2 connectors? Would owners manual have that or do I just have to remove it 1st?

It's much easier to get a clear view of whats happening on a lift so when recording a video those of us watching can know what to do
Fuel tank should be empty. I connected an electric fuel pump to the fuel filter to pump the gas out. Gas is over 8lbs. per gallon and that's a huge tank.
Too bad they cannot make an access door in the floor so access this thing so most of this is unnecessary.

Any chance I can pull this off outside a cvs With only 2 adjustable wrenches
Is it possible to purchase the plastic clips that go on the sending unit in between the line that you swapped out ? What are those called?
Fuel line retainer clips
No can do. The speed nut on the front strap spins freely - so the bolt is mostly out, but I can't loosen or tighten the bolt. So much for replacing the pump and fuel lines, not to mention the brake lines on mine are atrocious. Any ideas?
Would this tutorial apply to a same model year Tahoe as well?
This job is a lot easier when you have access to l a lift. Unfortunately most of us looking a tips on UA-cam don't have a lift lol
As a matter of basic safety, you should be using a brass drift or some other non-sparking tool when removing the ring securing the sender/pump.
You guys are the best!
With proper equipment, how long does this job take?
Mr. Wise Guy yes

Can this job be done on the ground??
Yes
If I have to cycle my key to on off position 2 to 3 times before engine will start is that a tale tale sign of a bad fuel pump. Fuse is good.
If you have a fuel pressure gauge use it. My 03 yukon was actually still running with only 15 psi. Should be 55 to 62 psi.
the guy that explains what's going on could be more specific
