Upon receiving her terminal cancer diagnosis, my mother told to that is was okay to cry if that's how I felt. She valued my tears. She spoke about the beauty of the light that reflected off of them and shone on her feeling of darkness. She praised my tears for their haste in coming to her aid, because within them was an enormous strength, for even a single tear held the power to kill a million germs. They would cleanse my heart and cool my worried brow. She reminded me that the pendulum swings equally as far in the other direction. She'd welcome the laughter, finding humor in irony. We shouldn't feel ashamed or guilty about either. Both Joy and Sorrow ought to be welcomed, and they are meant to be shared. Whether our sobs come from laughing or crying, when we hear them coming from a place deep within, we know we have just received exactly the right dosage of "The Best Medicine,"
There's a tendency of actually catching real emotions among many of us. Perhaps they are the most miserable cuz their personality is gradually killing them.
"I would rather get hit by a train then solve this math problem" sounds like every activity I ever did in rehab.😂😂😂 too relatable! For those of us who tend to take life a little too serious, we are blessed when you show us how to lighten up, but it's good to remember that just because someone makes jokes about life doesnt mean that deep down inside they're doing great and handling everything like a champ. I really like the message of this TedTalk ^^ Thanks for that! It's very important that we don't just laugh of our trauma before we've even processed it. But when I look through the comments I get the feeling that many people totally missed the message and just skipped to judgjng her performance as a comedian...
That's how many people look at someone who is a comedian, they expect us to be inhuman and always be "ON", making people laugh. They don't get it that it's our job, that we get paid for it because we have the ability to make others laugh and forget their troubles for a short time. Most people seem to think that we are 25/7, (not a typo), comedians. NOPE, It's our job, which yes we choose to do, but its because we get to do something we enjoy doing. We're lucky it works for us to be able to pay our bills, and some even more than that.
Yeah that didn't hit a bit too close for my comfort at all. Robin Williams once said something similar along the line of "if you feel bad you do all you can to make other people laugh so they don't feel the same sadness". Stay strong you beautiful brain and rock on.
Hey Mimi, From one comedian to another, you are totally right on the money. When I started doing StandUp in 2007, it was exhilarating and horrifying, but I totally loved the high I got from doing it, I still enjoy that high, but one thing I have noticed is that the demons I had within me years ago were bit by bit going away. In other words doing StandUp was both addictive, but more so therapeutic for me.
@@mimihayesbrain It always will be a balancing act and the figuring it out will never change. Your in for the long haul if its what you really want to do.
This is a *beautiful* talk! 🥰 Mimi, and anyone else listening in agreement with her, *do* *not* listen to the first few comments who mention how this is not a valid take. It absolutely is a valid one! Yes, levity and humor is a great coping skill, it can cause someone to agree with you (which is validation), but it does not solve all of your problems. Therapy and self-awareness is an amazing tool when life gets hard!
you are awesome, AND, laughter actually is pretty great medicine. we can grieve our losses and process our trauma and cry our eyes out and laugh our asses off. its not either/or. keep smiling (and crying, and laughing, etc, etc)
Proverbs 14:13 [13]Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness. Ecclesiastes 2:2 [2]I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it? Ecclesiastes 7:3 [3]Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
Honestly, i don't laugh alot like most do, i mean the kind of laughter that can be heard from 10 meters away or more, but still feeling happy to have smile from inside of me. Folks, Keep smiling cause it helps you be strong and find peace.
Disabled people have dark humour as a coping mechanism to get through what we get through. I think she needs to understand the science of laughter and rename her 'talk'. She's not even funny which is sad. Some of the funniest people have major mental health issues. As long as your addressing the issue seriously as well, then laughter really is the best medicine because of the endorphins that are released. I think she could probably do a motivational talk but comedy is not her calling. Glad she's alive and well regardless of my opinion of her bad comedy/message.
You missed the whole point. Humour is often used to deflect and distance oneself from something that seems too painful to engage with. And, in doing so, you might not seek out the help you need. Laughter is not a cure-all; nor is it always effective. It can be counter-productive if you hide behind it, and don't come to terms with your problems.
@@BigHenFor what says you can't do both at the same time? I totally understood her point thanks but I don't agree with it all, thought my post was pretty clear? You'll find that a lot of very funny people are funny because of what has made them stronger. It doesn't mean it doesn't need to be dealt with but you can use humour and you have to understand that some people don't want to talk about the past because they want to move forward in life. What are we going to cancel comedy now because someone might get offended that some else doesn't agree? Some folk are happy to use humour and just get through the day. This isn't something you can put everyone in the same box. Those who want or need help can get it but let's not look through rose tinted glasses and not assume that everyone who is funny has traumatic past or has mental health issues that they need therapy. It's ok to disagree
I feel that a more appropriate title would have been ‘Sometimes, laughter is not the best medicine’ because laughter can help you come up for air and stop you from becoming completely overwhelmed.
If she'd ever produced anything besides polite or nervous laughter in an audience, she might disagree. No mountain is too high, no river too wide, and laughing at yourself the whole way can get you over both. If you believe it's worth the effort, that is. And only if.
@@BigHenFor I'm twice her age, and probably yours, too. If you want to be a quitter, that's fine. Just don't blame anyone else, because quitters always lose alone.
And laughter IS the best medicine... When you laugh as a practice for no reason - like laughter yoga etc... Because what she was missing was actually laughing. You're projecting your own angst on someone else. She might not be funny but we'll live. What's more important is that her message of being present and accepting of one's own suffering, and one's need for help can lead to liberation from it.
@@BigHenFor She is claiming authority as a comedian. I actually looked and found nothing but this and other talks about this. Her joke in this was that of a child mocking their parents with a "silly voice". My own children wouldn't laugh at that. Who told her she was a comedian?

Fantastic more victims just what i needed.. you gotta love the fact that we can die and leave all this behind praise the Lord that this is not our eternal homes, thank God! I don't think i could take much more than a hundred years of this.. Sorry yall my compassion is running a little thin I must need to renew my mind by getting in the Word of God(Bible) I'm not responding in love like i should be..
You call God's name to make a point about not being compassionate. Nietzche would laugh at that.
@@BigHenFor yup I got a long way to go I'm still being perfected in Christ. Thanks for the reminder. But i think nietzches laughing days are over if he didn't have Jesus as his Lord and savior when he died but i don't know for sure i hope he did! Thanks again for the reminder I edited my comment a little bit :)
@@BigHenFor and if nietzche would laugh at me he'd be showing the same lack of compassion as I was that he would be laughing at. Therefore we both need to go back to God and learn from his wisdom to love and pray for one another and to treat other's as we would like to be treated. To respond like Jesus as He was the Word made flesh..

She might be one of the worst "comedians" I've ever seen. It's so awkward and silent in the crowd. Cringefest.
I thought it was just me cringing lol.
Feel bad for her
@@RareRosebud Yeah, a Ted Talk is a big deal. Hard to believe she is a touring comic though.
