As a Leica nerd, I throughly enjoyed hearing your talk about your decision making process on getting your M6. You could totally do a podcast. You have the voice for it. Hope you’ve been well Zach!
I learned photography in my time in the Navy 20 years ago and have been shooting Leica analog Ms for 15 years. There's usually a steep learning curve especially for younger photographers who only have had digital cameras. HOWEVER, THAT IS NOT YOU. You figured this out quick my man.
I own both new M6 and a black paint MP and for whatever reason I like the M6 more technically the same exact camera the new M6 is just a reskinned MP basically but something about the M6 just makes me pick it up more and shoot
@@genobambino - "with only cosmetic differences" - But with some advantages: The MP doesn't have a visible red dot, the MP offers easily worn-off black paint (very desirable with collectors), the MP has the fancy large 'L' script on its top-plate, the MP has a billet Leica M3 style rewind knob and film advance lever
I grew up with film. I made the move to digital because it's just easier to get the product I desire, not because it's better/worse. I am glad to get a different view!
We still love digital and the digital editing process. Film has been an amazing addition to the process and is also something that is important for most of our clients. Thanks for watching as always, Keith! 😊
Having both of you speaking (having a conversation) is really engaging : ) I keep hovering my finger over the trigger to buy a M6 TTL 0.85 in Silver but cant really justify the price *cries*
Let's start making those Portra 400 presets now that you can capture the same image on both film and digital. It would be fun to have a film reference alongside the digital photo and see how closely we can match them!
What I love with film photography is that the camera doesn't matter, it's 70% the film stock and 30% the lens as for image quality. As for sharpness and focus accuracy it's the photographer. No way a rangefinder can compete with autofocusing film cameras made around 2000. The AF was so great even then that sports phtotogs used it extensively. The Canon EOS 300X or similar with modern EF lenses is brutally awesome when your primary goal is to take gorgeous, sharp in focus film photography. And all this for tiny fraction of your Leica gear. Film prices especially reversal are brutal anyhow.
Apple Watch is more accurate and with plenty modern functions than Swiss Rolex. But people still buy Swiss watches. Leica is not only a terrific tool to get pictures, but also a fine toy and jewelry for the photographers. No Apple watch can be passed to the next generation, but a 200 year Rolex worth much more than its original value. It is an investment and legend through generations. That is what I feel when I hold my M6/M3.
Nothing like Leica, i own three now. Nothing compares to the lens look, and the most important part, the shooting experience and the mechanical sounds.
Video @ 4:14 "here's a photo" - One thing folks need to learn about using a rangefinder camera, FOCUS then RECOMPOSE. Too many new users fire the shutter immediately after focusing (the main subject is too centered with too much sky or ceiling; the foreground is much more pleasing). Instead, practice quickly recomposing using the two rules of GOOD photography. 'Rule Of Thirds' & 'Looking Room'
When loading, I tend to feed the leader in, then with the base still off fire a shot or 2 to check the film has caught, then close the baseplate and start shooting immediatly. That should ensure the film is properly on the take up spool, but also you get some nice frame burns and light leak for the first few frames ratehr than winding on to '0' then startoing form that. if that makes sense.
Very nice Zach, love the film results from the Leica. That image @8:21 is lovely. What film overlook are you using for the awesome video footage at the start and midway through the vid, MotionVFX mRestyle?? Very nice look indeed.
@@TheZachMendez The MP is such a pleasure to use. The Black Paint finish is gorgeous! It feels even more dense and compact than my M11. The leather wrap is much more pebbled and textured than my Q3. The mechanics are so satisfying. Same with your M6, I had a few times, some difficulty loading the film, and it would not catch. I've lost a few frames because of this. I was told it would start brassing over time, but after a few months, I only see minimal brassing on the tip of the advance lever, I'm hoping to keep this beauty for many more years to come.
It's wonderful seeing you both in love with leica M6TTL! I use it! You are selling your selves short ! Film is your base! Great! Now I'm going to suggest using Roll film 120! My prefernce the Rollei or MamiyaflesTwin lens (heavy). Try it out and make prints! Compare!! It costs roughly 3x more! Film is 12 exp vs 36! You will shoot slower, need seperate hand meter, slow! There are Pentax 645 and Mamiya 645.. 15 exp per roll. I don't mention Hasselblad, 'cause I never could focus them..Flash at any speed. The quality jump will knock you. Borrow a camera, a few films. It's not Leica priced. Do a standing portrait of your wife Dune, backlit at 15feet.Use full aperture f3,5 or f4. So falling depth of feld very easily seen.. Try similar with Leica.. I know thats not what you read and hear! I used medium format in studio and on location for about 30 years..
Congrats on the bday present! I also got me a leica for my 30th bday few years back in 2020. Also convinced myself I needed a film leica [ the MA ] when my son was born because I wanted document him growing up on it as well as something to pass on to him later in life if he chooses to pursue it. But for your last remarks about the digital one. DON'T try a digital leica, especially something like the m10, because you will immediately add it to cart like my homie Luis in the comments after he borrowed my m10 hahahha. its an addictive experience entering this leica rangefinder world.
The newer Voigtlander glass is basically 90-95% the same in terms of image quality compared to Leica glass but at 1/4th the cost, highly recommend their lenses.
I don’t know much about Voigtlander. I went with the 50 because it’s my favorite focal length, and I wanted the summicron. It’s also a bit cheaper than other Leica summicrons but holy moly these lenses are so expensive…
I love all the photos. is everything shot on 50mm? I have a Leica M4 and have loved it so far but I've always wanted an M6 or maybe any Leica with a built-in meter.
3:47 Oh, dear… Yes, it is a Leica, - but you already know that, NOT on par with a Leica M3 up to M6. With this 1970s model, the ”CL“ unfortunately stands more for ”cheap Leica“…
Pray you don’t need any warranty service or the rangefinder recalibrated because right now the turnaround time for repairs sent back to Germany is 12 MONTHS. That’s right a whole YEAR to get your camera back.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand this young man - he has possession of a brand new Leica M6, ergo, there's an instruction/operator's manual - either in paper format or online; how can you mess up loading this camera (unless you haven''t bothered to read the aforementioned manual) ? I own two vintage Leica bodies, & I've never once not comprehended how they function...Are some young people today, less intelligent ? 🤨
It is not an unreasonable contention to arrive at, Mr. Mendez. Note the question mark at the conclusion to my (initial) comment. It is an observation & not a critique. Don't be so precious.
The used Leica M6 is not the same camera as the new Leica M6. The new Leica M6 is essentially the same Leica MP that Leica had been making through all these years. The new M6 is essentially just the M6 top plate on top of the same Leica MP. So no, you can't buy a used M6 and get the same camera. They are quite different.
As a Leica nerd, I throughly enjoyed hearing your talk about your decision making process on getting your M6. You could totally do a podcast. You have the voice for it. Hope you’ve been well Zach!

My M6 was made in the same year that I was born. Gunna have to keep that one for quite awhile.
Same with my M4-P, never going to get rid of it.
That’s pretty cool Benj
That is so cool. Yes, a keeper for sure. Thanks for watching, Benj!
As a new m4 owner, there is an immediate sentimental feeling towards these cameras. Love that Dune brought that up
Yes 100%! Congrats on the M4. Thank you for watching 😊
For the same price, why not go for the MP?
To be honest I didn’t know much about it. I was interested in the M6 because I know several wedding photogs who use it and love it
The new M6 is the same camera as the MP with only cosmetic differences.

Yes, totally! Thanks so much for watching.
Just fold over the film end / tip before inserting the film, and then it'll catch easily when winding on.

Iconic camera. Not sure it's an investment though, unless Leica stops producing the M6 2022.
Making and keeping memories of the best quality.😉
Great video and photos. I have the MP as my first film camera. I feel like I need to overexpose 1 stop to get a better result.
I am so curious about the MP! Thanks for watching!

I know this isn't relevant but I vote for more videos with Dune!!!
Awww thank you!!
very interesting choice when the MP exists but enjoy the camera :) I recently picked up an m4-p :)
I will get one in a few years. I will also buy the new M6. Been photographing for 25 years.
I’m really loving mine. Thanks for watching!

Does this camera not have a shot counter?
It does!

Haha omg I tried an M11 at the Leica store in Seattle and it was hard to leave without it lol… Eventually maybe
Well Zach bought a M6 , now I need one lol. Also, Benj Haisch just gave you a shout out, keep it up man.
Hahaha omgggggggg I know I can’t believe it. Thanks for watching!
I'm about to pull the trigger on a m6 reissue as well. Any lens recommendations for cheaper glas? From Voigtländer for instance?
The newer Voigtlander glass is basically 90-95% the same in terms of image quality compared to Leica glass but at 1/4th the cost, highly recommend their lenses.

I like the recommendations on the Leicafornormalpeople site. It will depend on your focal length etc. What focal length do you want to buy?
Leica glass is the main reason for owning a Leica camera. That's where the magic is.
Really??? You want "cheaper glass" for your Leica? Sorry, but Leica is not for you.
What film was this?
I mention that in the video. Some is Portra 400 and some Ektar 100. Thanks for watching!
I prefer Leica MP and MA.
I’m so curious about the MP! Thanks for watching
MA gang let's gooooooooo!
Does yours scratch film like my new M6 did? Leica eventually admitted they had production issues.
Haven’t notice any issues like that! It’s been great so far. Thanks for watching!
I love all the photos. is everything shot on 50mm? I have a Leica M4 and have loved it so far but I've always wanted an M6 or maybe any Leica with a built-in meter.
Hi! Yes I only have the 50 right now. Would love to try the 35 eventually. Thank you for watching!
Fantastic Images! I also shoot on a Leica M6 it’s my favorite ❤
Oh amazing! Thank you so much and thanks for watching!
These are some beautiful photos!
Ah thank you so much 😊

I meter Porta 400 at 200 on my M6.
Yeah I know others who do too. I’ve been liking the results at box speed though. Thanks for watching!
Congrats!
