Leica MP vs M-A vs M6: Analog M Cameras Compared
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 лис 2024
- While most camera companies have abandoned film entirely, Leica still manufactures three different models of analog cameras, even introducing the re-issued M6 in late 2022. The Leica MP, M-A and M6 share many commonalities, but vary in some meaningful ways. In this video, Leica expert Josh Lehrer breaks down all the similarities and differences between the current lineup of Leica M Film cameras. From available finishes and mechanical variations to frame lines and light metering, he'll help you make a decision which model is right for you and your photography.

THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! Finally, a video that is clear about the Analogue M's. Absolutely love this!
Thanks a lot for reviewing. I have been waiting this topic for a long time!
Succinct, helpful, and easy to understand explanation and comparison. Thanks, Josh.
Watching all the Red Dot Academy videos, regardless if I'm in the market for a particular piece of Leica kit (I'm all set right now), is inexplicably soothing.
Thank you for proving that the black chrome M-A is the real deal from all Leica film cameras
Josh! One small but relevant point: none of the M models currently in production will come close to the build quality of the M3.
Thank you for an insightful and detailed comparison. This makes it easier to choose which of the film cameras I would want. Cheers from Perth Australia.
Great comparo! I would only add that all Leica M mount is compatible with screw mount lenses, back to the very earliest Barnacks. Subscribing this moment!
Josh, thanks for this video! It’s very helpful. Wish you guys covered analog stuff more often.
Thank you Josh for this great comparison video. I am tempted to get my first analog camera after watching this video which will be the MA BC. Although I currently use the M11P and the Q2 Mono.
Pretty sure that Mint are manufacturing the Rollei 35AF full frame film camera at the moment.
See my prior comment on this!
I am on the list for that one! Excited, I hope it lives up to my old 35SE.
Getting the MP for Christmas to add to my leicaM10p😁
Great video Josh!
great video!! Im torn between the MP vs M6 Titanium
I chose the M6 because of the rewind lever and the Single-stroke advance lever, also the small and beautiful vintage box coming with it. And the price was less than the MP, now I see more expensive
Was a hard decision, the three cameras are beautiful
I've already purchased the MP.. I do however enjoy this video
Got the MP, still enjoy picking it up every day. If I could have an ideal scenario, I would love to add an M6 to the collection which can exclusively have black and white film. A luxury, I know.
Yeah M6 is the best and most iconic.
Great comparison of the different designs. I would like to add that only the M-A is compatible with some older lenses e.g. the dual range Summicron.
The Dual Range Summicron-M 50mm works just fine on the MP and M6!
@@RedDotForum I did not know. That is great news. Thank you!
Black Paint MP all day... The forever camera... I need to use mine much more so that the patina will be there in the future... those Black Paint Leica bodies with patina after years of usage are incredible... extra special if it's all yours.
Outstanding❤
It’s like Josh watches my damn shopping cart.
Yay! New video👍
Do all 3 cameras have the same set of framelines? And what are they? Wasnt mentioned in the video 😢
Favorite show is right!
Hi Josh (Herb from S Carolina). As you know, I am a brand newbie to Leica, and a Q2 Mono, with your help, was my entrance into the family. So, I found your analog comparison, extremely interesting, as I am trying to learn about the different Leica models and their history, I would love it if you could do a comparison of the leica lenses... differences between the different builds. The words, 'Appo' and 'Chron' are always mentioned but I have no idea about the differences between them. Thanks, Josh.
I am not josh. But you really want to look at their podcasts. They are extensive about comparing the subtle differences between lenses, even special editions. They put the lenses on a SL with samples. Check it out.
@@jasonf3959 thank you. I will definitely heck this out, as well as other podcasts. I appreciate your suggestion. Herb

Thanks Josh, great timing. I'm looking at the these options at the moment. I have a q2 Reporter and M11 (black). In my (long time ago) professional days it was all split image rangefinders, manual focus, 35mm or 120 film, often with hand held meters and there is great deal of appeal to having that option now that I am in my sixties (the wrong end 🙂). I'd quite like silver chrome and so the MA is heading the list at the moment but I have more thinking to do. Black chrome is great but I worry that it will look scruffy before it looks brassy and I don't think I would use it enough for the brassing to show through. Would I like it when it does - not sure? If there were a silver chrome M6, that would be an option but it's not envisaged and I don't think I am in the market for used, to risky. The main difference (that I didn't know already) was the shutter difference (because of no metering). Obvious, but I hadn't thought of that. In the UK so a trip to my "local" Leica dealer, Stephens of Manchester) is in order. If I can try them side by side. Thanks again. Phil
If you do end up at the Manchester store, tell David that Josh from Leica Store Miami says hello!
@@jlehrer1890 I will, everything Leica that I have came from Stephens in Manchester. I still plan to pop by the Miami store when I am next in the region.
@@jlehrer1890 Just as a follow up, I will be visiting the store on the 18th of November when I am looking to buy some little thing that I can always remember was bought from your store. Not sure what yet, maybe a half case, battery (orange and low on stock perhaps?), soft release or something like that. Maybe I'll see you there.
I wish there was a black painted M-A 🥺
Which one has the better leather wrap?
Nice wrist candy🤤 mmm Daytona
I have a beautiful MP from 2006, but it lives in its case. The M9 gets the occasional airing. My favourite is still my M2 with no light meter, also living in its case, the poor thing.
I want to point it out here that the M6 black paint is vastly different from the M11. The M6 can and will show brass relatively easily, and it's beautiful like the MP. While on the M11, the paint is not only rougher, but also more durable. It's also not brass-topped.
Leica's official statement is that the M11 and M6 share the same black paint finish, but of course, painted aluminum (like on the black M11) will look different than painted brass (like on the new M6).
did you mention the M7
Great information, is the M6 viewfinder brighter or different in any way than the MA or MP?
They are all the same viewfinder!
All the subtle differences between these cameras in finish and built style remind me on stamp collectors where subtle changes in the print or finish of a stamp can make a pricey difference.
I have an M-A, and I love it because of its beautiful, stealthy look. I think it's the most beautiful of the Leica M cameras. My only regret about the M-A is that it doesn't have a self-timer. Do you know why Leica chose not to include a self-timer?
The M-A reminds me a lot of the M2 - yes the M2 do have self timers
Do you guys already have the new Q3? 🙂
My early MP does not have the half press on the shutter. The light meter is active when the film is advanced.
Something worth pointing out:
Out of all of them, the M6 is the only one with a film plane indicator hidden under the advance lever. not that everyone will need it, but it is worth pointing out
A very cool detail!
For clarification, Leica is not the only one to produce the full frame 35mm cameras i 2024. Now Mint is producing one too (the Rollei 35 AF).
See earlier comments on this!
Excuse me while I adjust my glasses... Umm Actually, "Leica is the only company currently producing full frame 35mm film cameras."
"Mint / Rollei" would like to have a word with you. There is also the bunch of recycled point and shoot disposable cameras being manufractured under some legacy branding, but I really don't want to name them.
CameraS. Plural. I stand by my statement! Rollei just makes one model (not that they are even available now). Also, on a more serious note, when we recorded this video that camera had not begun shipping yet, and I honestly don't think anyone is cross shopping the $799 35 AF against a new Leica M analog, but who knows?! In the end, the more options that are out there, the better.
You should just concede that you’re wrong and move on. All the “qualifications” just makes you look like you’re compensating for something.
@@varkengland9254 I suggest taking a step back and chilling out.
I felt that Josh and I were (pun intended) just joshing about. Let's also keep in mind their job isn't necessarily to be analogue film advocates; their first priority is to advocate for their brand. Which they have done a lot for the Leica community and the film analogue community. I don't need to harp on how rollei is also making rebranded disposable cameras. I was having fun at the team and his comments. I enjoyed the banter. You have ruined it a bit.
Something that wasn’t mentioned is that the reissue M6 will brass like the black paint MP
Not as easy
@@peetje28021970I got mine last year. The edges especially near the strap lugs and the bottom plate are both already showing brass not as much as my MP but once the brazing starts it’s pretty rapid
@@peetje28021970 mines about a year old and showing brass
Ive got my Leica MP with .85 viewfinder so will not be giving this up anytime soon lol
The MA did interest me though if I didnt have the MP
That's awesome! I wish Leica still made 0.58 and 0.85 cameras, but the fact that they don't just makes your camera that much more special.
@@jlehrer1890 Yea I dont get why they took that option away
but im happy I did react then hahaha
M-A BC all day. Black paint not to my liking.
M6 Classic is the best and most iconic film M body.
... but I want a black chrome MP 😢
They do exist! From the a-la-carte program, a few black chrome MP's were manufactured. But they are very rare.
Choosing the right analog M Leica for all the wrong reasons. Guaranteed to have nothing to do with the actually taking pictures with these very cameras - at all!
Why did they omit any scripture from the black chrome M-A? Surely there had to be a good reason for this.
oMg I yOuRe GoInG tO gEt DuSt On YoUr SeNsOrS
When you start your video with a blatant lie, it's kinda hard to trust anything else you say.
You're right. My legal name is technically Joshua...you got me!
So question is : if one wants to get MA, then why not M3? If one wants a light meter built in, then why not M7? If you want classic then why not get the real M6 and not rerelease? If you worry about warranty from used camera, then why not get them from Leica classic shop and skip the current line up? 😂😂😂
I'm going to address each of your points in a different comment to keep things organized. The M-A is a dramatically different camera from the M3. The M3 has a 0.91x magnification viewfinder versus 0.72 for the M-A, and only 3 frame lines, versus 6 for the M-A. The M3 is also trickier to load film into compared to the M-A. The M3 is great for some people but not for everyone. Especially because not everyone will want to purchase a vintage camera, that may very well be in need of servicing.
The M7 is a great camera, but some users may appreciate the smaller size and weight of the M6 or MP, or not wish to have a shutter that requires batteries to fully function. Also, some users prefer to buy new, to get a camera that’s going to work perfectly, be in perfect condition, and have lots of warranty. And lastly, not all M7’s will have the MP-style viewfinder that all the new M analog cameras have.
A similar logic applies to getting an original M6 versus the reissue. An original M6 may require servicing, and it won’t have the MP-style viewfinder like the new M6 has unless it’s been retrofitted. It’s also a zinc top plate versus brass for the new camera, and again, there will always be a segment of Leica users that prefer the peace of mind that comes from buying a new camera versus a vintage one.
Lastly, the pre-owned cameras that we offer at Leica Store Miami all come with a warranty, and almost every analog M camera we offer pre-owned is serviced first, and carries 6-12 months of warranty as well.
Outstanding❤
