I've watched vids of pilots starting everything from a 2 place Cessna to 787's, but there is nothing as awesome as watching somebody who knows his stuff starting an AN-2. Maybe I'm strange but I think that plane has a definite measure of sexy
That guy knows his stuff! When you can start a cold radial in 10 seconds flat, then you know your machine with your eyes closed. An earlier commenter was right, I would fly with that guy in a bucket of loose bolts!
Flew this airplanes in Colombia, in the 90's The starter was a heavy disc connected to an electrical motor, after 22 second of rotation a clutch was pushed to engage the disk to the engine , that's how this engine was started, also remember the brakes were air brakes like the ones on busses or trucks, the black lever on the left side and in front of the of the joke ''pilot side'' is the brake, like a motorcycle, both pedals centered; brake action is even, push on pedal more than the other and breaking action will go to that side. almost a ton in cargo, 12 passengers, a black box on the tail section hanging on 4 wires nothing electrical to it was only a set of needles on top of a piece of white metal, in case of a crash the needles will scratch the metal and that will give some ideas to the investigators, all this enclosed in a 6inch by 6 inch box...just hanging there. Also remember a central port under the plane with some switches and a hose, you placed a 55 gallon drum with fuel right there and the hose and pump will put the gas on the top tanks ,right or left!! fun plane to fly, reached 60 knots and up like a rocket have to push forward column to keep safe speed. hey I was 20 or 21 and flew this for 100 hours as a copilot!! can't remember much!!
I am getting the AN-2 for microsoft flight simulator. And I wanted to see how a real one is started up. This is such a good instruction! Thanks for the translation. I think this should be included as a tutorial for the simulated AN-2 with this guys voice. Good job sir! Spassiba!
Ahh.... Real aircraft and a real pilot... There really is no better recipe for the perfect UA-cam, aviation video. Many thanks for uploading this gem :)

Aaaah, that noise when the engine idles. Such a lovely plane...or is it a tractor!? They even included the winding up of the rubber bands by turning the prop. Some of the Russian pilots we had would turn the prop using the electrical flywheel. First time we asked him how many blades he wanted us to turn the prop he looked at us funnily and just waved us away...
Far more involved start up and shut down procedure in comparison with today's "modern" small aircraft, however the processes are perfectly logical, and one suspects that if we followed a similar stringent routine our engines would like us very much more :-)
The right gauge measures the 1st cylinder temperature, so it's not exactly "any other than the 9th". Actually I think the instructor knows this particular aircraft well enough to know what is broken there even without looking at the gauges. The 1st cylinder is the upper one, the 9th is next to it clockwise (viewing from the front).
Alter Verwalter.
1:05 most important , remove the control lock !! Its the same I do when y station my car in Madrid! Looks like that in Siberia thera are no car thefts , but plane thefts.
Heh, but actually its to prevent damage to control surfaces from wind or other aircrafts wakes. It locks them in place so they dont flop around and get damaged in storms or alike.
The safest aircraft in the world. Even if the engine completely stalls, you can still slide to the ground like a bird. Also, missing one cylinder (out of 9) means almost nothing.
it started on the first attempt because the ground crew turned the prop by hand while the pilot manually injected fuel into the cylinders using the priming pump. if you don't inject fuel while the engine is being hand-propped then yes, several attempts are needed to get it going.
I don't know for sure but I can make an educated guess. It seems like one of the cylinder head temperature gauges is not heating up. It's probably situated in the 9'th cylinder so the pilot concludes that cylinder #9 isn't firing.
There is a separate exhaus temperature gauge for the bottom (no.9) cylinder. Usually when the engine sits for long periods, oil will accumulate in the bottom cylinders and will foul the spark plugs. Before the engine start the prop is turned by hand a few times to ensure that the cylinders are cleared of any oil that could be accumulated. After the engine start, the pilot will run the engine to operating temperature, keeping an eye on the EGT gauges to make sure the spark plugs are firing and all the cylinders operate. If the exhaust temp of the bottom cylinders don't rise, then the engine needs to be shut of and the problem investigated.
There's 9 (or 8, at least until the engine warms up) very small ones happening about 5 feet infront of the cockpit. Whatever the Russians make, smokes as much as they do.

Real flying, superb. Its a joy to watch these old machines doing what they were built for. Flying. Thanks guys.

Very interesting to see a "real" pilot in action. The AN 2 is such a beautiful machine.
A beautiful airplane from a more elegant time. it's really good to see these marvellous machines being looked after and kept flying. Great job.
The clink the switches made is very satisfying.
Thank you so much! Very helpful for FSX SibWings An 2!
Cheers
Pat myZisfantastic I'm glad you liked it. That was my intention indeed, as I love flying Sibwings version too.
thank you for subtitles, it was very helpfull to understand for engine start up procedures of AN2
hakan737 birşey değil, abi... ;o)
Very nice! Might also be useful for those who are wiling to start flying this beauty in real life. Thanks a lot!
I love seeing these classic aircraft! They would not feel complete without smoke filling the cabin immediately upon starting!
That sound just as the engine started. Beautiful.

For me the best video on UA-cam.

Nice, nice and nice video! Wanderful Engine sound! The poetry of flying.
Thanks for sharing! Excellent to watch!
Молодцы немцы ! Вы умеете беречь надёжную авиатехнику !
Great video, God I miss toggle switches.
AN-2 je letadlo tker dokáže letet i v bouřce a ve ščpatzném počasí a stáe letí je to robustní mašina
Yes, I say it is indeed time for a tea!
I love this plane.
Super Video!!
já se letel s tím to letadlem, krásný zážitek.
Super avion, d'une autre epoque et qui vole encore admirablement bien. De nombreux modeles encore en etat attestent de sa solidité et fiabilité.
lol that smoke in the cockpit just after starting.
CHEEKI BREEKI
Oczen interesna!
Thank you very much for this, very informative video! Do you know much about this engine? Do you mind if I ask you some questions?
i jumped from this 15 years.. 3000 meters.. this is one plane that will never die.. app.. i m not russian.. 😅
Luna airfield I guess...Nice time, nice plane exuberantly feelings.
Now there is modification
And flying in regional aviation
the radio in the aircraft is a icom 706MkIIG which is HF VHF & UHF
Beautifull!!!
Ah, the nostalgia factor,
I'd fly with that guy if we were sitting in a bucket of bolts. Oh....wait.....
hello my Friends i love this plane modele nice explaination im french and i andretand every thing lul, Thanks for your video victor :)

An electric starter to spin an inertial starter....That's epic !
I think that tea, was in reality some vodka
Such a small cockpit
Initially didn't believe its Antonov
Awesome!
By the way how did he know the 9th cylinder is not working just by looking at the gauge??
Because the left gauge thermocouple is on the 9th cylinder :)
So I guess if it's any cylinder other than the 9th, he won't know which one?
Also which is the 9th one (viewed from front)?
The right gauge measures the 1st cylinder temperature, so it's not exactly "any other than the 9th". Actually I think the instructor knows this particular aircraft well enough to know what is broken there even without looking at the gauges.
The 1st cylinder is the upper one, the 9th is next to it clockwise (viewing from the front).
Thanks!
I had the luck to fly twice with an An-2 (not in the cockpit though), incredible! The roaring of the big radial is insane! :D
@@parapotamus why does the labeling (straight from the factory...) for the right gauge then say zylinders 1-8? (translated from russian)
That must be rather intimidating to fly if you're used to today's levels of comfort and noise and all that.
Love it. This one isnt working.. Well put on more fuel till it works lol. Love the AN-2. Such a great aircraft.
didnt they forget flipping the switches in the center console before leaving the plane?
Urugulu yes, he said to shut off the circuit breakers (the switches on the center console) twice but never actually did it. LOL
"9th cilinder not working... Never mind, it will if warms up" :DDDDDDDDDDD RUSSIA BITCH
Just wait till head temp. hits 400 degrees F,..........And hit the throttle!

An Icom 706 in the right instrument panel...?
I like
dvigatel off, the plane still on air što?

"The 9th cylinder isn't working, it will after it warms up". Yeah , I wouldn't fly in this thing. Thank you!!!!

Also, missing one cylinder (out of 9) means almost nothing.
Any radial would be like that if it's really cold
На Сортым летели?
There is nothing about this video that I do not like. I kept staring at that gauge waiting for cylinder 9 to begin firing!
This is fascinating but there needs to be a translation
Morgan Wasem Just turn on the captions (CC), the video includes the English translation as subtitles. They should show up automatically though...
Co tam robi Icom Ic706 ? :)
А мы удивляемся, почему у нас часто падают самолёты.
Is this in Surgut?
An Antonov An-2 that starts on the first Attempt? Video must be fake :D
it started on the first attempt because the ground crew turned the prop by hand while the pilot manually injected fuel into the cylinders using the priming pump. if you don't inject fuel while the engine is being hand-propped then yes, several attempts are needed to get it going.
Important: No anamals were harmed but a several gallons of fuel were burnt making this video
gdzie straciłeś kciuk?
👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Can i fly a plane like this in fsx 2020 ?
The AN-2 is available in the current MSF.
how can the engine be ok if cylinder no. 9 is not working?
Because it's Russian
It will once it's warm
god mnalčiky... setrvvačiuk starter
The engine exhaust smoke is coming inside the cockpit
its like my old 2008 bmw 128i
13:42 when you park your plane in the hood 😂
Where is he seeing that the number 9 cylinder isn’t firing? I’m not recognizing such engine monitoring gauges.

heating ? you mean warming up the engine ?
bobl78 Actually, yes. That's my fault - I'm not a native speaker... :)
No problem
And how was your чай?
M-62 engine, from I-16 fighter.
Shvetsov Ash-62IR, but yeah, same engine basically
It's smoking in the cabin!!! Where's the fire?

Ты заглушку с маслорадиатора снял?, , слил конденсат с нижнего цилиндра? 5-й цилиндр не работает, прогреется, потом заработает🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's got a steering lock in case someone nicks it.! LOL
Lol @ 9th cylinder isn't working, it will when it's hot enough. Classic Russian engineering mentality.
L Hauxwell It is like he said. Old spark plug needs to be heated. Nothing scarry.
😍👍

Why SO complicated ? No wonder they fall out of the sky.
Complicated? You won't ever find a plane simpler than this one..
