- In this video, we show you how to attach a knife handle to a full tang chef knife made for beginners tutorial on a full tang knife. We make the resin from scratch for these multi construction scales. This is the fasted way we've found in attaching knife scales to a knife. It's almost too simple to mess up. If you have any questions feel free to ask us.

About Savage Custom Knives:
We're primarily a knife-making channel, however, we do restorations and gaming-related knives.
I've been making knives since late 2018 out of our garage. My background was cooking but mostly office working. Knifemaking has been a great journey for us from no experience and no tools to having a functioning knife shop, a growing UA-cam channel, and now offering two classes on making knives from scratch.
My motto is: "We will give anything a go and if we don't know how to make something, we will learn as fast as we can."
Just a quick video on how we attach knife scales as many have asked, we hope you learn a lot.
I love your approach to youtube. most creators just want to hear themselves talk. Great job
I appreciate the brevity. It's how maker videos should be. 👍
Is there a video showing you finishing the pin work?
sweet bananas.i appreciate watching experts go over the basics.
edit: i'm a double-sided tape man, though. i've had bad experiences with super glue.
you don't want to know the details. let's keep it classy
love the shortness..RIGHT to the point, thanks!
all youtube videos should be made like this. this was perfect mate, cheers
Cheers Shane, nice of you to take the time to explain the basics.
Cheers
M.e.
Best handle scale video on UA-cam. Thank you. The super glue trick is useful
This was exactly the info i needed. Great job!
A very simple but affective video. Thanks
Just about to start my first build...this vid has everything I need, cheers!
Thank you for this straight forward explanation. Subscribed
show us your method for hidden tang too please. especially with locking pin
G'day Shane, Im not usually a knife guy, but Forged Downunder has got me interested. Nice, clean, informative content. Good stuff.
Thank you for that. Very informative. And also, thank you for not making that a 45 min video.
Great demo!!! Thank you!
Perfect great video thank you sir!
I like it. I’ll give it a go next time I make a full tang
Thank you for the video, not too long nor to short. Simple jargon 🤘🤘
Thanks man. This helps a lot.
How thick would you make the scales for a folding knife?
I've made 12 knives so far along with hand tools but I can confirm this is by far the easiest way to attach knife scales just don't forget to have the scales facing the other scales before gluing 😅
Wait I'm already confused.
"Having the scales facing the other scales"?
You mean like having the side that you want to be facing OUTward facing INward when you glue them?
Yeah, I've never screwed that up before... 🙂
do you expand the pins? or are the just there for looks?
thanks i learnt a lot
After grinding down the scales to be flush with the tang, how do you get the edges of the tang to match the finish of the blade?
Awesome video, but I didn't see how the metal pieces get cut to be flush?
Thanks
the hardest part for me is flattening of the tang
What kind of scales are these? G-10? Micarta? I’m restoring a knife for my dad trying to learn. Thank you for the video?
G10 spacers and looks like the red part is some sort of epoxy mixture with the brown part being wood. This method will apply to any scales unless they are 100% wood without g10 spacers. I would NOT super glue wood to wood if that’s what you’re using.
Try putting painters tape on the inside of the scales and super glue the tape together for shaping rather than putting the glue directly on. Makes it a lot easier to separate them
What size holes do I drill and what size pins?
Depending on the blade, use imperial drill bit and a metric pin
@@SavageCustomCreative would I drill the hole and have the pin the same size?
Or as close as I can get
Drill the hole with imperial for example imperial 1/8th is 3.18mm and metric 3mm is 3mm. This will let you do the handle fitup without things getting friction fit together and make the process a lot easier
@@SavageCustomCreative ok thanks dude!

thanks . i start seeing this movie '14 nov 2023 11:13 pm est ( utc - 5 )'
Bro show off your final product!
You don't peen your pins?
And……..no end result.
Crazy how not worth it is to make and sell knives …it’s actually really sad
When I glue my scales together I put painters tape on the insides and glue the tape together so I don't have to pry the pieces apart
That’s exactly what I do. So much easier.
I do faceting with a file at 120 degrees on the pins, it helps with gluing, the glue is retained inside the package. Hope this helps.
Thank you for this video. I really appreciate how clean and to the point it is.
but what are you supposed to do with the pins? do you just make them level or to you flair them on both sides? or how is that done?
Why not glue the scales on, complete the profiling (not contouring) and then just drill through both scales and tang, then pin through?
You can do that, however I find it a little easier and cleaner to profile a little before glueing onto the blade and its also easier to verify that you've clamped the scaled down securely to the blade
@@SavageCustomCreative Experimentation wouldn't hurt I suppose. I'm just starting out. Great instructional video, by the way. Footage and instructions were very clear!
Thanks. Ultimately their is no right or wrong way as long as it's fine at the end of the process I recommend finding processes you like as it works better for the maker
I've been looking for a video with precisely this information thank you so much for sharing
Where did you get the bass pins from?
Great video. Is there a part two to this?
Great video length.
Do you not peen your pins?
I found some steel pins that look exactly like yours. Can I use steel pins?
I did Shane, I want to put some on a new Bowie knife I have. Thanks.
So pins dont need hammering? Just epoxy?
