  • Because motor oil travels all through your engine, analysis of the used oil can tell you what’s happening inside the engine. Lake Speed Jr is a certified lubrication specialist and oil analysis expert. With over two decades of experience in engine building, dyno testing and oil formulating, Lake can help you hear your engines story just by taking a sample of the used oil, and you don't need a PhD to understand the results.
    Lake guides you through the process of used oil analysis - Taking The Sample, Submitting The Sample, Reading The Report and using the power of Trend Analysis.

    Wow, so glad I found your channel! I will be getting my oil tested by YOU!
    BTW, I rode go carts in Jackson as a kid, sadly only once, but it was my best, most favorite memory ever of something my aunts and uncles and I did when visiting my grandparents in Clinton!! I begged them to take me again, but it never happened. Now I'm 55, have a BIG heavy 'go cart' that I drive on track, plus 2 go carts in the shop needing work. One racing shifter cart, and one old cart I'm converting for off-road and adult size. But, alas, I have far more projects and dreams than I have time for.....but retirement is not far away.
    Seeing Lake Speed Jr., just feels like seeing an old friend! Thanks!

      @@themotoroilgeek I LOVE It! That's probably about the time, maybe a few years earlier, that I was there as described before. We'd often drive, I think on Woodrow Wilson, near Medgar Evers Blvd., on the way to the stadium and/or my doctor, and between the old Jackson Mall and a tire store. The the tire store always had bright red go carts lined up out front, and I just drooled and dreamed..... I bet you know the exact place!

    I 100% agree with used engine oil analysis!! Case in point: My 01 pristine Grand Cherokee 4.0L(brig owner, meticulous maintained) blew up both of its #1 piston oil skirts at 152K.2/2022. Jasper eng installed, 27K(2yr and 3 months) subsequent with 8 full Syn oil changes- with all 8 analyses(Blackstone Lab), this rebuild had essentially failed. Very early on with intermittent 0-5 psi oil pressures at idle and in the last 4 months signif antifreeze consumption. Blackstone reports convinced me(in the early analyses) that the motor was going to fail and with the last 2 reports convinced my mechanic and ultimately Jasper that this rebuild had essentially $hit the bed. Warranty exercised and another Jasper installed 5/9/24 at $0 out of my pocket. Now almost 500 miles on it with conventional oil, ALL subsequent full syn changes will again be analyzed.
    NOTE: Despite my mechanic have possession of all 8 analyses- when he pulled the valve cover and showed me he said “looks like you never changed the oil-hahaha”. Completely thick/black and scoopable with a spoon.

    I've been using a competitor of yours… They test TBN not oxidation. I have a 2016 diesel. how critical is it that I switch to a test that tests for oxidation?
    thank you so much for bringing oil science out of the dark, occult realms!!

    • @themotoroilgeek
      @themotoroilgeek  19 днів тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words and the question. The real value in the Oxidation level testing versus TBN comes in extending drain intervals. If you only use TBN for determining the oil drain interval, you will likely be over extending the oil drain interval, which could lead to deposit build up.

    Hey , great to find an oil specialist. Here in Portugal there are a generalized opinion that in a medium mileage car you should not change the oil sooner than it say in the manual , allegedly because the oil didn’t passed from all its working stages, and if you change the oil too early you can actually damage your engine. My question is, is this true or should we run as fresh as possible oil all the time? Can a premature oil change be beneficial or harmful for your engine? Best regards and keep the videos coming 👍👍👌👌

    Would love to see you do a video on the various ways manufacturers computer or determine the little things that tell people when your engine oil is exhausted. Some say XXX miles to go, some provide a percentage, but who knows. When I first saw this I thought they had something in the oil pan to measure acids or water or carbon or something. Then I read where one major manufacturer just has a mathematical algorithm they use to come up with their result based on various factors such as oil temperature, engine RPM, time, vehicle speed, etc. I guess if you just do stop and go driving and never go further than 5 miles, it will tell you to change your oil sooner? Who knows. But here is an example of confusion.
    A good friend with a small fleet of pick-up trucks has asked me a number of times about this because of my racing engine building background. I have him using the same quality oil for all of the vehicles. They are GMC/Chevy, Fords, and a couple of Dodge Trucks. All were purchased new and the oil was changed to the 0W30 I have him using within the first 1,000 miles. Oil analysis is done from time to time, not every oil change, but about once a year. I also have them warning up the trucks for 1 minute before driving away in the morning, then they are told to drive nice and easy until the water temperature is up to normal, or pretty close to it. All show excellent wear with no problems. All of his trucks run great. About a month ago, his company started a project where every day, 4 of his trucks with the same basic load and weight have been going to the same place 5 - 6 days a week. They get on the Interstate and dive 40 miles, the crews will work all day, then drive back 40 miles.
    Here is what is strange... The 2 GM trucks say the same percentage of oil life after 5,500 miles. The Ford shows about 10% more oil life left, and the Dodge shows 15% less oil life left. I know they are different manufacturers, but they are all gasoline engines that are about the same size, and doing the same amount of work, and basically the same driving style. So what give here Oil Nerd? Thank in advance for your input.

    Lake, my brother and I each have one of the new GM 3 liter Duramax engines and the popular 1500 series pickups. I’m getting 30+mpg. It uses 0W-20 Dexos D oil. So far there are only a handful of companies that make this oil. The way I understand it, it’s the particle filter in the exhaust that dictates a lot of the additive package in this oil so that during regeneration all the soot gets burned off and very few metals are left to plug the filter. Can you test this oil and see what it’s all about ? Thank Larry

    I’ve used SPEEDiag twice now. Quick turn around, easy to read reports. From my understanding, they use better test methods than some of the other UOA labs for more accurate test results. If I were being picky, I just wish there were kits for the guy sending in only one sample every 6 - 12 months. Either single sample kits, or kits with 3 - 4 submissions in mind with more than one postage label. All in all, great service. I definitely recommend it if you care at all about those “whispers” your engine is giving you. I do and I use it to help guide the maintenance/service on my 997.1.

The oil sample was taken last September 6th, but unfortunately, I didn,t have time yet to send it. Is my oil sample still good for an analysis? Also, do you know (May be experience with other cutomers) if it,s easy to have the sample cross the border? Thank you. Thierry.

    He
    I analyzed the engine oil of my Suzuki 1.4 GDI turbo petrol, after 3200km the volatile fuel in the oil was 4.5%, after 5300km it was 6.4%.
    Obviously the viscosity has decreased a lot but all the other parameters are good, especially the wear metals.
    Is it possible to reduce the dilution problem by using combustion improvers?
    Alternatively I was thinking to using a more viscous oil to compensate the dilution, from 5w30 to 5w40...

    • @themotoroilgeek
      @themotoroilgeek  Рік тому +1

      The best way to reduce fuel dilution in a GDI engine is using Top Tier fuel. The increase in fuel dilution is from poor atomization of the fuel due to deposits on the injectors.

      Fuel dilution increases when using ethanol in fuel.
      Oil analysis is very handy at diagnosing these kinds of problems.
      If you switch to a non-ethanol fuel it should help.
