Do Engine Oil Additives Really Fix Rod Knocks, Lifter Noise, Oil Burning or Leaks

  • In this video I will explain if engine oil additives really work in getting rid of engine rod knock due to worn bearings, or if they help get rid of lifter tap or ticking noise, or if they can fix an engine that is burning oil and smoking out of the tail pipe.

    Fixed the oil burn in a 2006 Prius with 230K miles substituting 20% of the oil with Lucas or STP. Also increased the MPG from 44-46 to 49-51. I've had the car on this formula for 15K miles.

    8:30 - Mentioning that Lucas foams up in a 3 gear display case doesn't mean that it does it inside of the engine when it's mixed with 4-5 quarts of motor oil.

They sent us display gears in some clear plastic that you could turn to show customers how stringy it was and how it stuck to everything. Amazing how everyone thought it was wonderful at the time and now we know better, thanks to the Internet.

    Excellent points sir and spot on.
    Now I’ve been using Lucas oil stabilizer on some of my cars as needed for over 20 years.
    On my 93 eclipse for lifter tick (notorious issue on them) which ‘temporarily’ assisted, but I finally gave in and bought new ones. Now here is where I praise Lucas- my wife’s 200sx had a major engine failure around 120,000 miles. The engine was rebuilt, new bearings and rings and crank, seals etc etc. YET it was not bored and honed🙄 this left a ring gap not within spec and so we have lower compression. Every oil change I add 1qt of Lucas to assist with that and blow-by and wear. That was 80,000 miles ago and several smog checks and she still is chugging. Although a temporary solution it has helped prolong the life of the engine until we can source another engine or car.

I didn't have an oil burning or knocking problem, but back in those days STP was pitched as a "preventative". I doubt it ever did anything, but at least it didn't damage the engine. lucas is awesome. I use it in my truck with over 340000km (211000 miles)
    in my experience it keeps the oil viscosity for a lot longer than without it.
    Usually i change my oil every 5-8k with castrol edge and about 5k the oil looses viscosity. The lucas oil keeps it fresh for longer
    If you have engine problems, it wont fix it. If your bearings are toast, you cant fix it from a bottle
    If you want something to keep everything lubed, and keep your oil from loosing its lubricity, run lucas

    • @hunterl7588
      @hunterl7588 5 років тому

      And I forgot to mention. My parents run it in their trucks (they drive long haul)
      and they always put lucas in when they change the oil. And those trucks go over 1 million miles all the time. Its not uncommon for them to go over 2 or 3 million either
      Plus I only started using it because an old racecar driver talked me into it. He ran it in his cars, so i tried it and its awesome.

      Diesels usually run Rotella which has a higher Zinc content than conventional oils. Jeep owners are learning to run Rotella to help their flat tappet ticks. Most modern cars could use a zinc laden additive. I prefer using my GTX high mileage oil so I substitute the zinc I need with Engine restore in around 6ounces per oil change. If I was treating a new to me used car I would run seafoam in the crankcase for 1 or 2 oil changes to clean up the varnish and sludge then go to my normal treatment.

    About a year later I decided to do the seafoam in the oil again. After a few hundred miles I changed the oil.

    I use one bottle of it, as my top off oil, in between oil changes. Seems to burn off slower than adding regular oil. And since my engine is usually running on its recommended oil viscosity..... I doubt adding lucas slowly as top off oil is thickening it up all that much. At least not drastically. Remember it’s usually mixing with at least 3 or 4 qts of your regular viscosity oil so it ends up not nearly as thick as it seems.

    If you are lucky and the crank doesn't get hammered (little or no scratches) from a knocking rod, you can sometimes just change the $30 rod bearings, break it in, do an oil change and you are done.
    Tiny scratches can be hand sanded by using a very fine sandpaper together with a band around the crank journal.

    • @TheProGamerHW
      @TheProGamerHW 4 роки тому +3

      Update - the engine, Volkswagen 2.0L 85kW/116HP, has been running for over a year now (around 30k miles) since we've only replaced the rod bearings without machining the crank. It has a lifter tick (probably worn cam), but it still keeps on going with exactly the same performance.
      The bearings were destroyed when testing the max. speed on an unrestricted German highway, probably due to bad oil and/or low oil pressure, resulting in a massive rod knock and driving it 200 miles home with a knocking rod.
      So if you get a rod knock and have an older gasoline engine, don't lose your hope yet and at least try to replace the bearings, you can sometimes still save your engine for very cheap.

    Great points - wish I knew years ago - it may just be a coincidence (not causal) but I had a scenario where I added Lucas (or similar additive) with low viscosity to the engine oil. About 20 miles later all of a sudden my crank pulley bolt cracked and left the ending, followed by the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) and everything powered by the belts (water pump, power steering, etc). Think it's possible that increasing the viscosity of the engine oil was enough added strain to the crankshaft that the bolt just broke out of it?

    I had a 1980 Ford Mustang, inline 6 with close to 300 thousand miles and a product out of Ft. Lauderdale Florida called engine Restore, between 3-500 Miles and after using Reatore almost all blow by and smoking went away and Compression bumped back up to almost factory specs. Restore comes in 4-6-8 Cylinder formulas.

    That stuff only increases the oil thickness. While the oil pressure might go up thicker oil also flows less effectively and in cold climates, the engine will be oil starved adding insult to injury. Use the oil viscosity and type (syn always better) recommended by the manufacturer. BTW, in addition, some engines are equipped with variable camshaft timing devices that are affected by the oil viscosity. Also, your gas mileage will decrease and the engine will still need a rebuild

    • @Skoda130

      Yeah, but if you have an old beater car, you're not going after an engine rebuild, but just try to keep it running as long as possible on a worn engine.

    I can say that without a shadow of a doubt Lucas oil stabilizer will help if you're engine is using oil. I had a Hyundai Santa Fe going through a quart ever 800 miles and the engine making some noises... I used a quart of Lucas and could go 3,000 miles and maybe used half a quart.

I put everything back with 5 30 oil but truck sound like a diesel. My oil pressure is showing ok in my dash. I bought the lifter oem to see if that help. Any suggestions. I will appreciate.

Turned it off and on a few times and deff was quiet but on next oil change, I’ll deff grab another qt of this Lucas, mix it in with the oil and try it all over again continuously till my car ends

    Been using lucas for decades never had a problem, cold starts are where you metal on metal wear occurs and lucas stops dry starts from ever happening!

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 4 роки тому +1

      It reduces the effect of a "dry start" but it doesn't totally eliminate it. Even in the cold it does help with protection from drier starts. I only used quotes around dry start as the engine always has oil, but when it has less on a cold start up it can do most of your engine wear, I'd think.

    I have used heavier oil in high mileage engines 15w40 and it can stop them from burning oil and extend the life of the engine by a good margin. The only additive I use is Sea Foam Motor Treatment, I have used it in oil for a few days and then changed the oil and it will free up sticky lifters. I buy whatever Conventional oil is on sale by the case and I buy quality oil filters when they go on sale by the case and change the oil more often than most people.

  • @rickuyeda4818

    STP worked great on the older engines like the Chevy 216 straight 6. I ran 40wt non-detergent oil on my '49 Chevy 3100. What about Seafoam? There's a video of a guy who had an old Ford Ranger pickup. It had lifter noise and ran rough. He used Seaform in the oil and gas. The lifter noise stopped and the engine smoothed out.

  • @robwhoot7686

    I believe that in some cases that some liquid additives can help lifter tap. I had that problem and tried additives and the tapping stopped. My fingers are crossed after 2 weeks past and still no lifter knock.
