I grew up with Wizard and miss it completely. Thanks for doing a tribute to this piece of geekdom that had left us all too soon...if I inherit some obscene amount of money, I promise to being back Wizard in all it's '90s glory...in print.
This hits hard! I was addicted to wizard magazine, especially as a junior high kid not really knowing where comic book stores or having parents willing to take me to and then spend a ton of money at comic book stores, it was way easier to convince them to get me one magazine once a month. This was my life line to comics until I was able to buy my own, and even after I still continued to buy it. I remember actually calling the find a comic shop hotline, yes that existed, when I was on family vacation so I could pick up the new copy.
RIP - I remember reading their hypothetical X-Men casting... they called Patrick Stewart 6 years before the film was made. A jolly good time, and it was my gateway into comic books as a young child. It showed me a bunch of great characters and some blurbs by their writers, and I knew what I should go and read. Now, Wizard Magazine lives on in channels like ComicPOP! and Comicstorian .
Good call on that!..(I rememember That!) They did quite a few movies or comics that would or should become movies & the Actor's should be cast I can't remember the name of that section or article name?!?
You are officially on my check daily for new videos list. I thought I knew way to much comic lore, but Sal you kick my ass at it. Also this has been bugging me, and a question for the other viewers, who does Ben remind me of?!
Dude, you explained Forever Evil in a way I couldn't imagine so I bow to you, sir. Thank you so much! I've heard Ben equated to Paul Rudd or Charlie Day in the comments. Or a third option!
TVLittleHouse Thanks man, I'm glad it helped. I'm just trying to get new comic readers caught up in case they dont want to research the backstories, hopefully I do the Infinity and Original Sin as much justice. But I just love the dynamic of You(assuming I'm talking to Sal here), Ben and Ethan. Their reactions to what we consider the norm as comic fans is just hilarious, and the fact that you still get through the plot so everyone understands it is incredible.
i remember going to my public library in 2005 and they were selling old books and they had a ton of wizard magazine on sale for twenty five cents each, the library gave them all to me for free because she just wanted to get rid of them and i read the crap out of them not knowing what the comic industry was or what was marvel or dc was or any of it, i just thought looked cool.

god i loved (still love) Wizard mag. It was basically a mashup of Entertainment Weekly and Maxim for comic nerds. Indeed their downfall was not jumping on the internet bandwagon when it was still in it's infancy. A lot of the old staffers went on to work for the comic news websites you see today so they had the opportunity to remain the forerunners in comic news entertainment. Also i believe the creators of Robot Chicken came from Wizard, others went on to become editors at comic publishers, so as much as they get blasted for the "toilet humor" they were a lot of talented and smart guys working for the magazine.
Decided to go back and check the early back issues. I used to love wizard magazine. Actually had a subscription for years. Think I still have quite a few in boxes somewhere. And yes the bone claws were so stupid. Fatal Attractions was cool though, still have my copy.
I have some old Wizard Magazines from 1998 and 2006/2007 the one from 1998 is the July issue with the pin-ups of a bunch of female heros and not gonna lie the art looks fucking nice 👌
I remember some of the earlier issues of Wizards where they always had the wizard costume (Purple star covered cloth) was always somewhere on the covers.
I use to love wizard magazine back in the 90's, and early 00's. Around the mid 00's is when I started to taper off buying the magazine. I hated it when they switched formats. You use to get all kinds of stuff included with the magazine. Like posters, cards, and comics.
Hi I'm from south america and this magazine was sold in my country in the lates 90's and it was great, but the problem was that the magazine was way too expensive.
Fun fact about that poster-- it's a fake. Wizard did these "April fool's" things in their magazines sometimes, and that was one of their convincing fake posters. I think Nikki Cox is MJ in that one!
@@comicpop Well, they got young Alex, bastards. I also remember some article about X-Men and there being a 3rd Summers brother, and I'm not sure Vulcan was around yet, or even an idea, so I've wondered what the hell they were talking about...probably another trick....fucking wizards.
I remember having a subscription to Wizard for over a decade, and I knew something was wrong when the physical format of the magazine changed from the thick books made of smaller pages to the thin magazines with a larger page format. Then, when they actually folded, I had no idea that they actually went out of business - my subscription was still valid and no one at Wizard bothered to let me know...I just stopped receiving magazines. I didn't actually find out Wizard was dead until I read about online a month or two after the fact.
I was just trying to find the original ads/articles announcing the Age of Apocalypse from 1995, and I thought of Wizard (and thus found this video). Thanks for reminding me of everything that was great about Wizard in the 90s.
Oh I loved the fuck out of Wizard and wished it was still around. Especially the big year end issue. I looked forward to that every year. Anybody remember an Earth X art contest issue? Create your own superhero for Earth X? Which issue was that because I would seriously buy it up. Not gonna lie...I still have a good chunk of back issues of Wizard that I flip through from time to time.
On a mission to catch up on older videos ! I remember wizard fondly my first con was a wizard con when I was like 12 and before that when I was like 6 or 7 I remember reading wizard in the back of the school library on the ground because of course they kept them close to the ground tucked away hahha
I used to buy issues of Wizard when I was in High school many moons ago ( it was money well spent ) then new issues during 2004, 2005,2008 until the last issue in 2011 ( I also bought random back issues from the 90s ) :D
That is so awesome! I used to hunt for back issues of Wizard in my time, too! I wanted to see how much the magazine changed and grew over time. Weird to imagine now, a kid wanting to see that process.
"Twisted Toyfare Theatre" in Toyfare was some of the funniest shit from my childhood. drunk iron man, snarky 4th wall breaking spiderman, Doom as the eternal bumbling villain, those "comics" were so good. and fun fact; on of the dudes who made Twisted Toyfare Theatre went on to be involved with Robot Chicken, and when you see the TTT comics you'll see the immediate resemblance
Because of the internet news that they reported was old by the time the published it. They ended up doing more articles like top ten things to buy this summer. I think they should have gone with more original content you couldn't get anywhere besides their magazine. Like the article where a Psychologist analyzed villains. What was wrong with them and how to treat them. Or the Pro Tips from Comic Artists. Or the Casting Call, or the Comic book Commentary, giving creator commentary on books like Green Lantern Rebirth or Crisis on Infinite Earths. I also loved the Art contests and the Halloween costume section every October. If they relied more on things not available elsewhere that might have helped.
The most memorable part of Wizard to me were the countdown lists. Who would win in a bar fight? Who's the most dangerous supervillain? The Top 20 most iconic scenes in comics, etc. I would have had little idea about the world outside of Marvel and X-Men if not for these magazines. The Ozymandias reveal in Watchmen was one such thing I learned from Wizard first.
Wizard was tremendous. I never knew it ended on such a low note. It's a shame. They were doin things in the 90s that people make a livin doin online today. I love Death Battle on Screw attack, I can remember Wiz doin the exact same thing, only in print of course, back then. The one I remember most is when they had The Darkness vs. Whitchblade and she kicked Jackie's ass. Still won't accept that one. Never seen y'all till this video. Y'all got a new fan. Keep it up boys.
Aww, I miss the early Wizard days. I still haven't found an online source that fulfills me like Wizard used to. Maybe since the internet is always on, there's no anticipation for what I'll find out next month. Some independently wealthy comic fan should journey back into print media and create a good comic magazine for our time.

Perfect description. Wizard was the main source for any one into comics that didn't have a group or lcs to get news from.

wow 1991 I was in the 7th grade, and I remember my friend bringing this to school and I was hooked, I read it even when I had stopped reading comics.
