    The MG4 has caused a big upset in the electric car market since it went on sale. Costing around the same price as the equivalent petrol family hatchback, the MG4 undercuts electric rivals and offers a strong range and engaging driving experience to boot. But with MG’s poor customer satisfaction and build quality records, can the ‘4’ be the car to finally convince EV sceptics to make the switch? Rich finds out.

    Great video! You can set the left / option buttons for multiple functions in particular on left side for regen or drive mode - incidentally cruise control speed is set by the left toggle don’t need to go searching in the menus - options are set from car/convenience as I recollect - it’s quite intuitive!

    I’ve been waiting for such a car to come along so that I can enter the electric vehicle market. Dynamic looks, great handling and ride quality combined with decent range, fast charging and a price much lower than its competitors such as the iD3 or Cupra Born.

    Have heard of some real horror stories when it comes to reliability usually concerning the battery, charging and the failure of dealers to fix faults quickly and for good.

    MG is currently not available in all European countries.
    As of now, it’s still missing in Switzerland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece.
    I hope MG expands to those countries and sell the MG4 there in the near future.

      It is just a mainland China crap car. Made with toxic nickel batteries made in my country Indonesia which destroyes our land and causing irreversible environmental damage. Even plants cannot grow around these areas. And to create these mines and smelters, they clear thousands of hectares of rainforests in Sulawesi (Celebes) and North Maluku (Mollucas). Battery powered vehicles are NOT environmentally friendly, especially chinese ones. They would not give a damn about envirnomental impact and mitigation.

    Having had the MG5 this looks like a better deal all round but looking at the recent price drop of the Model 3 I'd sooner put my £26k on a used Model 3 rather than a New MG4

    • @colingoode3702
      @colingoode3702 Рік тому

      I agree. Rain water may run off the rear screen once you're on the move but the dirt & road grim will remain & build up. IMO a rear wash / wipe is a must on any Hatch, Estate or SUV - especially in the UK. Rear wiper delete seems to be something of a "thing" these days with some makes. Probably a combination of penny pinching & so called "styling". I have a rear window mounted dash cam so a clean rear screen is needed to get a decent picture. I'd take the MG5 over the 4 for this reason & the fact that the 5 is an estate / more practical, has a much lighter interior & has a roof rack.

    Incidentally, as I understand it, those toggle buttons on the steering wheel can be programmed to operate things like the regen braking settings etc.
    It's funny that your last 'Dealbreaker' was about spec - having come from an EV without heated front seats now in to one that HAS them, I'm not sure I'd ever be able to buy another EV without them...!!
    So, that'll be the Trophy for me, then...! 😉

    • @colingoode3702
      @colingoode3702 Рік тому +2

      Oh yes. I can remember when heated rear windscreens, adjustable side mirrors, Disc brakes, power steering, central locking, AC & all the other so called "modern day" features started appearing as standard fit items or as options. Once you have experienced them it is hard to give them up. The first "must have" feature my wife wanted on her new (used) car after sampling them in mine, was heated seats. Funny thing is, even though my leather seat gets a bit chilly in winter I never use the the drivers heated seat in mine or the passenger heated seat in her car. My car even has rear heated seated seats which I think may have used twice in 6 years.

    • @philipkelly6962
      @philipkelly6962 Рік тому +1

      @@colingoode3702 Heated seats are nice but wait until your wife tries a heated steering wheel...your list of requirements will just get larger. My new MG4 is the first car I have owned with this feature and driving to work today was a game changer, the cabin can be a bit chilly but if your hands are warm you feel so much more comfortable.

    • @colingoode3702
      @colingoode3702 Рік тому +2

      @@philipkelly6962 TBH I think heated seats & steering wheel should be standard on all EV's to minimise the use of the main cabin heater, which kills the range. I'm still debating what EV to get for my wife & I to share (I'm keeping my petrol estate for now). We would be looking for a used model at £20k or less so the MG4 is outside of our budget for a few years.

    It still amazes me how many compromises current motoring journalists are willing to accept on a car costing north of £26k. The seat materials and interior plastics look like something from a base Fiesta from 10-15 years ago. The boot is small, the range on a 'full tank' is short, 'refuel' times are ridiculous, reliability and customer Service are iffy.......but it's got a battery, so it's a great car..........

      I get it. But EVs make great 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th cars. In my case a 6th car (I’m American). Being able to turn on the air conditioning while away to cool the interior in the summer. The instant torque that exceeds super cars. Sitting at a traffic light forever and not wasting any fuel, it’s a great feeling. It’s not the same as start-stop. Start-stop eventually kicks in the engine at a light if you sit long enough in traffic. Try an EV. You might like it.

    It’s a shame it is absolutely riddled with problems, from oil leaks to software problems to people getting trapped inside the car.
    Mine has barely been out of the dealer since new and the latest issue (at top speed of 64mph with foot to the floor) has MG stumped and it’s been with them for three weeks.

    The back is terribly designed. The spoilers spoil the whole design + actually increase consumption. No rear wiper? Really? I live in a country with lots of snow and rain, dust - am I not supposed to see anything? What good is all the high tech without a basic safety feature like a wiper? Will they next time omit the front wipers too? To make it even more "futuristic"? Otherwise, it would have been a great car.
