"What am I playing here? Cold hard reality?" That statement alone made me laugh WAY harder than it should have, which in turn made me depressed due to how true it is. 10/10
It's a bit disingenuous to say there are no real differences between Brother and Papa Nier. I like both, but the reality is the first half of the game makes far more sense with Replicant as it's supposed to be a coming of age story and his loss of innocence. Getalt is just too cynical and hardened by a life in that world and it's why he doesn't change anywhere near as much by the timeskip.
Yes but the actual story beats are identical (e.g. Yonah goes to the Lost Shirne->You meet Weiss->Get told to collect sealed verses->etc) so even if they are different characters it is the same story. I don't think that's a disingenuous claim.
It's incredibly flawed, so no. It's like Deadly Premonition, super rough around the edges and pretty shitty gameplay but with a lot of heart and love put into it.
I wouldn't say it's Deadly Premonition levels of bad, but good, it's like Clemps said the gameplay is serviceable, side quests are pretty flawed by design, but saying its a 5 out of 10 (looking at you Gamespot) is just ridiculous.
I think Greatswords needed some work, but otherwise the gameplay was compelling enough in its simplicity. The whole of the package made for a good enough combat that usually doesn't last long after the early game anyway. The Sidequests reward you with a bit of personality and story decently enough (some more than others) that I didn't have a problem doing them. For the early game, it sorta gave it the feel of watching an Anime, which I deeply enjoyed. NIER isn't perfect, but that's just because it's in its own TIER of greatness (joking).
You know, on the subject of Brother Nier over Father Nier. Would it be nice, if they ever decide to remaster Nier, that they would give you the option to choose to play as either Brother Nier or Father Nier. Because, I kinda really like the idea of the brother being Nier Jr. and the Father being Nier Sr. That the life of this family of a single Father, brother, and sister being destroyed by the apocalypse, and either the Father or Brother sacrifices himself to protect the rest. Maybe have the Shadowlord be the one you didn't pick, so it's always the Father vs the Son. Would that add to the tragedy of the story?
Real talk? I had the same fan theory after I looked further into the series, and it makes so much sense! Its not uncommon for fathers to name their sons after themselves (I am an example of that) but it also ties in to Accord and the multiple world theory that the franchise is now built on! In short, brilliant deduction mate.
I wondered why the R is capitalized, and looked it up. Apparently, it's an inside joke/secret thing related to the *R*eplicants discussed later in the game.
deadlywork Yep! I won't play the demo just because I wanna taist the full game at releas first. But honestly the narrative in this games are just amazing.
NA's setting has nothing in common with GITS besides cyberpunk. GiTS is all about heavy computerization and augmented reality in the world that looks just like the one we live in, while N:A is kinda like postapocalypse with robots, androids and such.
Nier is a more of steampunk-like with the automatons rusty machinery complexes while GITS is simply cyberpunk, both are actually have different aesthetic in terms of settings
Undoubtedly Yoko's best game so far. The reason for that is simply that, while D1 has a lot of interesting IDEAS and concepts, it mostly is not actually that well-written per se. It dives a bit too far into its own nihilism but doesn't necessarily have that much substance to compensate, most of it is just the character concepts like Caim being a statement on the questionable nature of heroism, but they're not exactly complex or do much to get sympathy from the audience. About the closest thing is Caim's pitch-black charisma. It's interesting and the novelty of its bleakness can't be denied but if it was the only thing Yoko had done, or all he ever did I wouldn't hold him in anywhere near the same regard as I do presently. NieR on the other hand keeps the weird stuff, the extremely dark events, the subversions, but it adds a lot of warmth and love into the story. It's a story centered ENTIRELY on love, in fact. The characters are much more sympathetic, while being interesting in both concept and execution. It's not really just the main characters ever, a lot of the NPC's you run into are genuinely good people too as you pointed out. It has a way more positive view of humanity than Drakengard does. This means you are a lot more invested in the story because you care more about the people the horrible things are happening to. Not to mention that the game has a lot more levity in general, a lot of the jokes in it hit home and much of the banter between Weiss, NieR, Kainé and Emil puts a smile on your face if it isn't making you laugh outright. This is also helped immensely by the mostly great script and voice-acting. There are some more cheesy lines and melodramatic moments but it's far better than the scripts in most JRPG's, except the greats like FFXII and Vagrant Story.
Drakengard: a bunch of cunts and degenerates saves the world Nier: a tight knit group of people who found family in each other and love each other dearly doom the world
The guys over at Super Best Friends gave you shout out this week on their podcast. Hope that helps spread the word about the good work you're doing on this channel.

you mentioned Flyff I'm legit crying right now so many people don't even know the cute little world of Flyff and here you are mentioning it ughhhhhhhhh my heart
I don't think that brother Nier's side journey of getting buggered by butt pirates should be seen as making brother Nier "canon," but rather an extension of Yoko Taro's original reason for introducing brother Nier to replace father Nier in the first place. Namely, mocking the Japanese sister complex and the Oni-chan trope that pervades JRPGs. I hope Clemps still checks out these comments since I agree father Nier is the much better character.
My brother by chance bought this game for me on xbox 360 when it came out as it said Square Enix on the front. I played it aged 16 and absolutely adored it but couldn't find anyone who knew about it or had even heard of it really. It was the first time playing a game which really changed how I thought stories could be told in the medium. I learnt about Drakengard much later when Automata was announced and came across your videos randomly one time. My God if this isn't one of the most interesting, thought provoking, beautifully depressing and just batshit insane pieces of media ever created. Although FFIX is my favourite game mainly for it's nostalgia, I find myself constantly trying to find out more and more about this series through every facet possible and for me it's one of the few series where I look forward to content for it outside of just games. I look forward to getting my hands on an English version of Grimoire Nier and just absorbing as much as I can from this series. Even to this day I don't find many people who've heard much about drakengard/nier outside of automata in my day to day life but I hope over time more and more people get into it. Nier is a strange example in particular where I didn't really love the gameplay but was SO completely absorbed by the story that I had to see more and more. The story was the bigger part which was something I had rarely experienced. Often with rpg's I find myself half listening to the story as they are so often pretty on the nose but the gameplay would keep me going. With Nier, I enjoyed the gameplay somewhat but I just wanted to see so much what happened next. It hooks you from the beginning. Not to mention the incredible music. Please excuse the boring rant :L I don't often comment on content but wanted to say how much I love your videos and explanations of the stories and find myself rewatching them incredibly often. I think you personally have managed to bring a good amount of new fans to the series which is quite the feat to be honest. Fantastic work Clempsy!
So, to comment on the Red Eye thing, there's actually more than one. In fact in NieR Re[in]carnation, Yuzuki has an alternate costume that comes with a weapon story depicting how the version of him that exists in the proper NieR universe became a red eye. So honestly Caim becoming a red eye isn't that far fetched to me even if the picture is fake.
AAAHH! The wait is finally over! Haven't started the video but holy shit Thank You!! Already feel it in my bones that I'll love this analysis you took so much time to work on! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
Yoko Taro is such a bizarre genius. All the complex backstory and deep mysteries covered in most of this video and it's basically non existent in the game itself. Hell, if it wasn't for fan translations we still wouldn't know most of this stuff and yet still there's so much I can't wait to see you cover in the second half. The complex worlds and stories he creates are seriously unmatched. Great video as ever dude, when you said it'd drop before the end of the year, you delivered just in the time, can't wait for part 2!
@5:52 That Bayonetta insert made me cackle. I played the original Nier a while ago and just recently finished Automata, so I'm kind of on a Nier binge at the moment. :D
Your summaries of the previous Taro games was a big part in me picking up a refurbished PS3 today and I was lucky enough to find a relatively unscathed copy of Nier for cheap the other week. After I play the fuck out of it I look forward to coming back and watching this series.
Wew lad, what a fuckin ride. I went full sperglord and got the platinum trophy, guess I need to read the Grimoire translation. I've never played a game that had all these different styles before (bordering hack'n'slash main, bullet hell, isometric dungeon crawler, text based adventure) all in one, let alone pulling it off cohesively. I love the fact that Papa is ugly as fuck as I'm pretty over the whole androgynous anime character, don't even get me started on the ONIIII-SAMA! trope, even if it's turned on it's head Madoka style it's super refreshing having an unattractive main character. I think the only song that got to me after a while was the Northern Plains one, as good as is it the vocals became grating while grinding. I loved the fishing quests for the repeated SHHH, YOU'RE SCARING THEM AWAY banter and if you tackle fish corresponding with your fishing level it's really not that difficult. The side quests were a real treat when they fleshed out characters, helping Yonah cook, Emil's butler, Facade escapades. Like you said, you start getting comfy and then BAM they start hitting you with the feels and once you start going for the other endings it turns into Everything & Everyone Is Shit: The Game and I absolutely love it. I went from thinking Automata got dat Toobie booty to being fully torqued thinking about the story and the dream team making it.
Thank you Clemps! I just got ending E on the remake Nier. I watched your videos several times before hand and there were so many surprises even after. You are awesome sir thank you for piquing my interest!
Yeah, because a middle aged man uglier than sin is much more pleasant to look at than a fucking hairstyle thats only there for the beginning of the game.
Maybe I missed this subtext. I was under the impression Taro wanted to created something original and different with his games. To be honest, I like the first Drakengard the best, and then it all seems downhill from there. Drakengard 2 has great gameplay but a very disapointing story and missed the obvious opportunity to make Manah the main character. Nier has a great story and characters, not to mention the amazing music, but the gameplay is very lacking. Drakengard 3 was mediocre all around. Now we'll see how Automata turns off to be. I heard it's very good.
Still one of my favorite video- series of yours. You really had developed your own style at that point and found a good way between summarizing the plot and telling us your own thoughts about Nier and its universe. I will never play NIER as a game, but I will always love to hear your voice telling me, why you love it so much :D.
I discovered your channel thanks to Two Best Friends Play. I must say I'm super impressed with your videos... your humor is right up my alley, boi! You deserve way more views, and I look forward to moar vidyas!
He is clearly a crazy person/true artist. He wrote Pascal who accidentally taught a bunch of children how to fear, which is... something. The man is right up there with Tarantino and Miura for writing that fucks with people's understanding of what it means to be human.
There's a certain level of testicular fortitude necessary in writing a character just to have them lose their mind from the weight of their actions. I can't do it, but I also can't cut off my ear and mail it to someone out of spite, and it's in recognition of my own limits as an artist that I can see when someone is what I would call "an absolute mad lad".
I love that there is a specific ending in automata for removing your cpu, even when the game tells you specifically what is going to happen. And then it calls you an idiot, because it told you several times that it wasn't a good idea to essentially remove your brain, and then the obvious thing happens.
I just discover your channel yesterday, and had binge watch your analyse/review vids I really enjoy it I hope you do more of it, keep up the good work clemps

I found your channel looking for information on the Drakengard/Nier series and I am really enjoying your videos, very entertaining and informative, keep up the great work!
Man, I love it when two franchises connect like this. It makes their universe seem all that much bigger, having one world of fantasy and magic, and another of the nicest looking depiction of Hell I've ever seen.
Hills of radiant wind - I was about half an hour into the game when it greeted me with the seemingly endless green fields and this song. This was the first time I deeply fell in love with Nier. And my first fetch quest to get 3 goat hides. At first I didn't want to hurt the animals, it took me a while to cut open a couple of them to advance the plot, the music was just that beautiful.
The old guy NieR gives me a very Ovan type impression with him having evil magic he can use and attempting to rescue a relative from it, which is interesting because he's also voiced by Jamieson Price.
I read that the god people were forced to make a pact with was the Queen Beast, she didn't fully die and survived through her ashes. Forcing people who injested her remains to make a pact with her or die. So, in the end she took out humanity just like she wanted, she won.
I love this game so much. This was the first game that I have ever started a new play through right after I finished it the first time. With that said, I never finished the second play through but this might get me to do it.
Ending E is a completely new ending in Nier Replicant Ver. 15, I really hope Clemps will post a short video or something abt it! I haven't finished it yet but it's so good!
09:10 Are you sure it's from Grimmoire Nier? I couldn't find it and a while ago somebody told me it's a fan art made for a let's play that isn't official at all
EDIT: (I edited out some language in this video that could get people in trouble if they react to my content. I'd bleep it but UA-cam doesn't let you do that for some reason! Thank you for understanding!) As depressing as this is to admit, you might be right. Did a further bit of digging after I read this, and despite being told by multiple sources that the picture was from the Grimoire, I can't find any picture in the online collection documenting it. EVEN MADE A GOOFY EDIT IN THE VIDEO, NOOOO. I'll correct this in the next Part and add an annotation, though I've still read a lot of people think that Red Eye is Caim following different theories, such as the random attacks on the facility holding Angelus. Thank god I stated it was a theory in the video or I'd look like even more of a plum.
I also agree that it's almost certain that Caim is Red Eyes in spite of that picture not being official artwork. There are too many things that do add up for it not being even in the slightest true. But I have to admit I'm disappointed as well because I thought that I was in the wrong here and it was in fact true :(
Its a VERY popular theory. Caim's body not turning up despite not burning up, the attack on the facility... it all adds up to SOMETHING, but that something might not even be true. Really hope Eve turns out to be a link or answer to that in Automata
It's funny, looking back on the Red Eye portion with the knowledge that it's fanart. It already sounds like a revised version that emphasises the fact that it's a theory.
Already knew all this (except for Caim being red eye, but I see in the following video it was an assumption based on fan art), had even read the translated book, but it was a very good refresher and very well covered, have my sub!
Excellent video! I played through the game but that was a long time ago so it's been great to remember the events of the game! By the way, I liked your humor too!

@@Aisubun Yeah the same events happen, but how it affects the character is radically different.
Clemps, would you rather be a millionaire or eat a pancake?
_Would you rather take a chance, or dance in pants?_
Ok I believe you
damn back before you blew tf up
Kingdom Hearts 3 review, but with Clemps!... or other way around, Clemps does KH3 review, but with snipets of KH3 skits from Just a Pancake
Damn I was waiting for this
Thanks for giving me my needed Clemps fix
Goddamn I could listen to you talk about Yoko Taro's work all day. Fuck! This world is so interesting!
I wish we was ants and lived in true communist regime, comrade!
You know why they call it Nier.
Because it's nier-ly perfect.
Heh.
The Twiton ha haaaa
Damn that actually sound like a good idea
Real talk? I had the same fan theory after I looked further into the series, and it makes so much sense! Its not uncommon for fathers to name their sons after themselves (I am an example of that) but it also ties in to Accord and the multiple world theory that the franchise is now built on! In short, brilliant deduction mate.
Hi im from the future, youre wish has come tru
imchris well kinda, we don’t know if we can play as both brother and father yet
@@misakiki8344 if they add the DLC stuff then we should get the opportunity to play as both, just in different circumstances
I wondered why the R is capitalized, and looked it up. Apparently, it's an inside joke/secret thing related to the *R*eplicants discussed later in the game.
So we went from a Berserk like Fantasy setting to a Sci-fi Ghost in the Shell like world(esteticly).
Only Drakengard can pull this off. @_@
If the soundtrack and general setting/premise of Automata is any indication, it is headed even further in the Ghost in the Shell direction.
deadlywork
Yep!
Discrod Raft
For now. I wouldn't be suprized If they would drop a huge mind f*ck near the end.
Nier is a more of steampunk-like with the automatons rusty machinery complexes while GITS is simply cyberpunk, both are actually have different aesthetic in terms of settings
I love how lewd you are, Clemps.
Well The Sphere Hunter, take out the word Clemps and that’s what lots of people think of Golden Boy (regardless of my personal opinion on it)
It's you!!

Gotta love how the power of friendship totally doomed the world.
Drakengard: a bunch of cunts and degenerates saves the world
Nier: a tight knit group of people who found family in each other and love each other dearly doom the world
Love your content dude, have a nice year :D
I remember when I had that Weiss Pod skin in Automata, I just thought "Hahah, book go brrr brrr". Had no idea the weight that book carried
The guys over at Super Best Friends gave you shout out this week on their podcast. Hope that helps spread the word about the good work you're doing on this channel.
They did? Wow.

Just wanted to drop in idk if i ever commented but ive been watching your vids for 3 years now and youre just awesome, this was the first one so i wanted to leave this here. Luv ya clemps
you mentioned Flyff
I'm legit crying right now
so many people don't even know the cute little world of Flyff and here you are mentioning it ughhhhhhhhh my heart
So honestly Caim becoming a red eye isn't that far fetched to me even if the picture is fake.
been waiting so long for this! thank you and keep up the great work!
Always thought that Caim may have been Red eyes trying to rescue Angelus as they had a fascination with her.
25 minutes of pure enjoyment and suffering, especially suffering
These type of videos are amazing haha
One of the most underrated games ever.
Great videos.
You're getting extremely good at editing and making well timed cuts. Amazing video!
Rewatching as a quick refresher ahead of the Nier Replicant 1.22!
Can say you are getting a lot better at video making. Will be waiting on the next part.
Back here once again after finishing the Replicant version upgrade after having played the original 3 years ago.
Thanks for making these Clemps.
I come back to your analysis videos from time to time whenever I'm bored because they're just so good.
Thank you Clemps! I just got ending E on the remake Nier. I watched your videos several times before hand and there were so many surprises even after. You are awesome sir thank you for piquing my interest!
This time the game has some spooky aspect ratio fuckery and not Clemps. How the tables have turned.
How is this channel not popular? The commentary is solid, it had a good review of the game, the edits and jokes are good, so HOW?!
I'm happy we got Gestalt because young brother's cockatoo bird hairdo would have broken the immersion for me.
He loses it after the timeskip, fortunately
Yeah, because a middle aged man uglier than sin is much more pleasant to look at than a fucking hairstyle thats only there for the beginning of the game.
It's not about being pleasant to look at, it's about not having a tired J-RPG trope staring in a Yoko Taro game.
But Nier is all about jrpg tropes
Were you not paying attention?
Good to see this finally come into fruition. Very much looking forward to the next part.
Also Devola > Popola.
Btw dude i love your videos. These uploads are right on time for automata and your really saving everyone a lot of hours of bad gameplay.
Came back for the Nier: Replicant Announcement from yesterday evening/this morning. Ultra hype, glad I ended up playing through these two games.
YES, finaly. Damn such a good video. Cant wait for part 2!

"I hope Autamata clarifies on what happens in the lore"
*Yoko Taro laughing in Yoko Taro in the distance*
The game also controls the best of any Taro game, but that's 100% subjective.

Good stuff, duder!

Here because of the Superbest Friend Cast. Watched the entire playlist and and I feel slightly insane but generally hyped for Nier Automata.
Found this due to your recent Canuck adventures. Excited to watch the rest of the series.
If Caim survive that missile i would flip
Here after just finishing the Replicant remaster and honestly was so excited my whole play through to watch this after 😍
:V Been waiting for this, thanks clemps!
9:32 isn't arioch proof that it's possible to make two pacts? assuming they aren't one entire being, she made a pact with undine and salamander.
That opening is great goshdarn
Thank you for understanding!)
As depressing as this is to admit, you might be right.
Okay, I pinned this comment and made an annotation so more people can see the mistake! :)
Thank you for pointing this out.
We will see the second part by the end of the year? XD
I've been waiting for this moment... for all my life... /// *HOLDS ON* ///
It's funny, looking back on the Red Eye portion with the knowledge that it's fanart. It already sounds like a revised version that emphasises the fact that it's a theory.
Mai boi went and did it. And it actually stops on the first visit to Aerie, bloody hell. Looking forward to moar. I hope your PC won't break again.
Already knew all this (except for Caim being red eye, but I see in the following video it was an assumption based on fan art), had even read the translated book, but it was a very good refresher and very well covered, have my sub!
Coming back to this one now that the remake's out. Neat to see the similarities and differences between now and then
eagerly waiting for part 2 i want to see what else i didnt know about this amazing game
