I have been a JRPG fan since the late 90s and I don't remember a year like 2024 since maybe 1999 or 2000, it's basically a new golden age for the genre. If you asked me two weeks ago I'd have said the best of 2024 was Infinite Wealth, but now that I'm playing it I think Metaphor might take the crown (with both easily on my top 10 all time JRPG list).
I never understand this constant complaining that there are no games to play, I think these people aren't gamers anymore and just don't realize it yet. 2024 is yet another great year in video games. Rebirth, Granblue Fantasy, Shadow of the Erdtree, Hundred Heroes (I play on Xbox), Visions of Mana, Metaphor: Refantazio, Y's X. This is a lot right here but there was a lot more too.
The thing is time, they take alot of time to finish to even play any of them back to back. If your a kid yeah you got all the time in the world but if you have kids, work, family it's harder to finish all those games due to time management
This year will definitely go down in history as one of the best years for JRPGs, there were just so many of them that it is insane and a lot of those were really high quality.
Ys X is also a really good game that released on pc this year. The demo is Also quite lengthy and can tell you exactly what to expect from the gameplay loop
Dude I was hoping for the whole video that you eventually got around to Visions of Mana. It flew so under the radar it's insane, honestly for me personally it was one of the most enjoyable jrpgs of the year just under FF7 Rebirth, it was such a joy to play through it
I just bought trails thru daybreak on 20% off sale and I likely won’t play it for a very long time haha I’m on trails from zero right now but I’ve just been buying up the whole series on my ps5 when I see them go on sales. I think the only 2 I haven’t bought yet are Cold Steel 1/2 so I’m hoping they go on sale soon too lol
@@krispybowgod9656 I also have been playing through the series and i started with trails from zero. I play one trails game then 1 or 2 other games then go back to the series. I am on Trails of cold steel 3 currently.
Unicorn Overlord is easy to explain, it's Ogre Battle + FF12's Gambits. The rock/paper system I think is overly simplistic the stats and skills you have equipped and synergy within the party play a larger role than just x class counters y though that does apply. This is one of the best games of the year.
i agree with all this, except eiyuden. for me it was shallow and boring, and could not capture the charm of suiko1 and 2 or even 5. Heck even 3 and 4 i consider better than eiyuden. The main cast was developed so poorly, compared to even rising. and the extra characters do not even deserve mention.
@ as someone who bought suikoden 1&2 on their release dates and still own those copies, eiyuden was exactly what I was looking for, loved it, each to their own
I was really looking forward to Visions Of Mana but then I played the demo (PS4) and it didn't leave a good impression the framerate was awful. For those who played the main game on PS4 how did it run?

Is fine, but Is also kind of a mess ... Is the kind of Game that gets better, gameplaywise, in the end Game content after the credits. Is a super easy Game because there are broken Jobs that require Zero effort. The story ... Is there. Nothing special. The characters are fine enough. As a fan of the mana games I can't really recommend it, but Is not a Bad Game either
@@mauricioaguilera3194 that's a rather interesting take. I don't have much experience with the Mana games but I wanna check visions out at some point. As a fan of the mana games which one's your favorite and/or represent the series the best?

i agree..have it on the switch, but the loading times killed it for me so i stopped playing unfortunately..tested it on my brothers ps5 and there were no load times in and out of battle and on menus..i cant justify buying a ps5 yet because there isn't any game that caught my attention 😢 Let's hope suikoden 1 and 2 isnt bad with loading on the switch, or i would really have to buy a ps5 lol..Suikoden 2 is my favorite rpg of all time
Pretty great list man. Whereas Atlus keeps hitting the high notes with gems like Metaphor, Bandai Namco is still obsessed with pumping all these underwhelming to say the least licensed RPGs. It's so sad really. Anyway, 2024 is the year of the RPG for me. Games I'd recommend would FF7 Rebirth, Like a Dragon 8, Granblue Fantasy R, Visions of Mana, & Metaphor.
Man, I miss reviews where they compare versions released in different platforms. We know that games are struggling now in Switch, and it is great to know when someone calls the attention to that, so we don't need to suffer with slow downs or crashes (yes, I am looking at you Bloodstained RotN). Congrats on the call about Eiyuden Chronicles.

Unicorn Overlord, Trails Through Daybreak, and Ys X are my favorite RPGs this year. For awareness I don't have a Playstation so I was a bit limited on RPG options this year Edit: I played Reynatis and yeah I didn't finish it.
I wasn't familiar with Natsume Atari, only the American company Natsume (which split from the Japanese Natsume in the 90s). It turns out Natsume Atari made all the Power Rangers games I played the heck out of when I was a kid.
Interesting list! If I had to give a recommendation that was not on the list nor in the intro, it would have to be Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. I don't have anything that I would not recommend that I have played this year.
Sega being the MVP company of the year wasn’t on my bingo card: Yakuza Infinite Wealth Metaphor (atlus) Persona 3 (atlus) Shin Megami Tensei VV (Atlus) Unicorn overlord (atlus/vanilla) Sonic X Shadow
This was a good year. Lot of good games. Think it's good to recognize ones like Granblue that came out much earlier in the year and could easily be lost amidst all the heavy hitters later in the year. That game was fun, had a good story, and had so many characters to enjoy getting a feel for. That was pure excellence. Visions of Mana was great. That's a beautiful game and such a nice continuation for the franchise. Sucks the studio that made it how things went. But they put together an excellent game. Just good looking and pure mana. The Archetype concept works so well and lets you be incredibly flexible in how you approach things. Just a beautiful game that tells a solid story. Some good twists in there that I didn't expect, but had me engaged with it. Also, why are we still pretending that FF7R is a remake? Yeah, it's not exactly a 1:1 remake...because it's a sequel! In-universe the original happened and this story is the consequence of time travel. There's a lot of quality put into the game. But let's just take it for what it is. It's not a remake!
I have a hard time, deciding if my favorite game of the year would be metaphor: refantazio or unicorn overlord, but in the end I have to pick unicorn overlord because of the awesome world and 40 different characters you can use, and all the awesome combos people have created on UA-cam. but metaphor: refantazio definitely goes to my second best game of the year. it’s insane both of these games came out in the same year.🤣
Nice video, I love FF7 so when I do get a pc or ps5 yea along with Grand Blue Fantasy. Am on NW so I got Eiyuden CHH on sale which I have not started to play as yet as am now playing SMT5-V & That time I got.... I love the anime so I saw the game with is on sale but not for $20 lol I'll still buy it but thanks for the heads up.
I know this video is recently released but a big recommendation RPG would be *DQ3 HD2D* Great RPG brought back with Octopath Traveller paint and many quality of life additions Best time to start a Dragon Quest
I played SDS Grand Cross back when it launched. But only for ~half an hour. I just couldn't stomach the boneheaded decision to interrupt the game every other moment with a ~40 second minute download. Several times per chapter. Would it be too much to ask to at least be able to choose to download the entire chapter's data at once?!
This year, i played unicorn overload on my own time and currently playing ff7 rebirth I did also streamed p3r an the dlc, now I'm streaming Metaphor ReFantazio
I wasn't as enthralled by We Have Persona At Home. It just seemed like it was missing something that I couldn't put my finger on. I still enjoyed it, but I don't think it'll be one of those games that'll stay with me.
Eiyuden Chronicles was great on PS5, hope people will give it a chance there, you can feel a lot of love was put into the game - it deserves a chance to shine.
FF7 Rebirth: The game was great. Could’ve done without gears and gambits. There wasn’t a ton of bloat, honestly. You don’t have to do everything at all. I wanted to, but I’m not everyone. If you think you are, you haven’t met enough people.
Interesting list of games 🤔 appreciate you sharing. I’m actually quite happy with Reynatis myself ❤ I’m having a lot of fun with it. Personally I find critic reviews to be hogwash💣 I quite paying attention to them a long time ago.
I think Mana suffered what a few others did. It felt like ten thousand games came out, and there's only so much money. And short memories about trailers.
Awesome list here. Sadly I agree that Eiyuden Chronicles for the Switch is a real sore spot for me for those exact mentioned reasons. With that said, all 5 mentioned games worth playing definitely a go! Visions of Mana, Metaphor and Granblue I'll have to save for when a PS5 comes along my way. I got other RPG titles to still cross off my backlog. Still need to complete Trails to Reverie before I can even tough the Trails to Daybreak arcs. So far FF7 Rebirth has won me over this year.
its kinda crazy that granblue relink gets ignored a lot by people even tho it was the most successful JRPG launch this year and the only game that broke the +100k concurrent stram players, in a year filled with new entries from the best JRPG franchises relink towers over them all (except rebirth i assume it wouldve done better if we actually have the numbers or if it launched day 1 on steam).
I really wanted to like Reynatis, but not being able to fight after blocking is dumb, I do disagree that it looks bad though, it has a cool art style altogether, I'm more mad that there is no english dub at all. Ofcourse FF7 rebirth looks real good. I might give Slime Isekai chronicles a chance I like games with alot of characters, and the gameplay looks fun, and it's cheaper now.
God... I remember seeing the trailers for Reynatis and thinking, "oh, this looks really cool!" ...and then I found out there wasn't going to be English voice acting and gave it a pass. Apparently, I unintentionally dodged a bullet. Also, swap out Visions of Mana with Ys X, and the "worth it" list is pretty much the games I also enjoyed this year.
I see how you mention eiyuden chronicles and i just want to say I can respect what you say about it. Your just calling out the issue and it sound like for switch it would be a disaster. I have it for the ps5 but i can understand for switch it can be a disaster and it needs to be called out so it can be fixed or notified otherwise it won't be changed so I just wanted to give a friendly shoutout on that :) Also i was bummed about sky ocean as i too was rooting for it but when it came out and i watched people play it and all, i was like sigh nope. Great things you mention :)
I still getting Eiyuden on Switch because Switch2 is backward compatible 🤔 For Reynatis, I know it's not for everyone, but it reminds me of PS2 era RPG, so I'm picking it up for nostalgia..🙄 Thanks for the list though 🙂
Hey could you not use metacritic review scores as a reason for why someone should or shouldn't buy games? I know you have your own reasons for not liking Reynatis, but I wouldn't use the opinions of random strangers from review sites to dictate wheather a game is good or not.
I see every1 say metaphor has got better pacing than persona because youre more free to do what you want. And then you come here saying its the opposite. And isnt the game also like 20 hours shorter on average than the persona games? Huh...you got me lost here
FF7R, Granblue Fantasy, Unicorn Overlord, Metaphor Re:Fantazio, Shin Megami Tensei V:V are definitely top 5. Other games like Paper Mario: TYD, Eiyuden Chronicles (not switch), Yakuza Infinite Wealth, Visions of Mana and Ys X Nordics are worth considering too. Those games not worth it can be consider as wait-until-big-sale category as those are not too bad but need some improvements.
There is one major flaw with Metaphor, that being that you can't change classes in combat, so a lot of times you can end up with a completely worthless party line up and not be able to do anything but reload your game. The game likes to mess with you too, it'll have dungeons full of enemies weak to specific abilities and then have surprise enemies pop up that will hit all of your weaknesses and be immune to all of your attacks. Not a deal breaker but man does it kill my play momentum sometimes.
You’re probably building your team wrong then. The game gives you more than enough customization to make a team that can both handle most situations AND prepare for specific enemies. For exemple if you know the boss of the area or the most common ennemy is weak to fire, you don’t need everyone to do fire attacks. 1 or 2 is enough and you can dedicate characters to handle a variety of other situations with inherited skills. Also don’t forget you can use items that deal elemental damage, they proc the « extra turns » too and are super cheap to buy. Always have like 10 of each in your inventory and you’ll be ready to handle these unexpected encounters.
Hard disagree with the Reynatis take. The game is not any graphics marvel, but the game runs well, its combat is quite fun and the story is pretty good. I feel it received a way harder treatment than deserved specially from the "specialized" press. I mean there are a few points that were hardly criticized in the game that were completely ignored in higher budget titles.
Taylor, I love your videos but not including Trails Through Daybreak in here is criminal... c'mon man, even if you don't like the series, it deserves to be here.
I really hope Granblue Fantasy Relink is not a one time game, they have a winning formula with that combat and progression, I hope it has a second wind release on Switch 2 and that we get to see sequels, I may get Visions of Mana if it gets a Switch 2 release too, it runs like butt on my budget PC. I'm still sad about the Tensura game, love the anime, shame the game got such a meh reception, I may buy it with a really deep discount tho.
- unicorn overlord is one of my top 5 RPG games ever. i started playing the demo. i couldnt stop playing it. i took instantly 3 days off of work to continue playing. i was so addicted. didnt have this feeling since i play DQ11. even there the addiction wasnt nearly as bad as here. i played it on a normal difficulty because i am not familiar with those games. but i instantly played a second time because i wanted to test my limits on the highest difficulty and i play it like 160 hours in both playthroughs combined. - for visions of mana. it is not as good as trails of mana. and the story is kinda schizo. but overall i like the game. been a huge mana fan since i was young. people should check out the demo - i dont know why people think ff7 remake had a good combat? it was okey, but i wouldnt call it good if the dodge button is cosmetic. you have to block because dodge is unreliable. the only time dodge felt useful was against rufus. so i hope they improved on it. cant wait to play it when it comes to steam.
Granblue has amazing combat, sadly the bosses happen to be reskins with very few changes. And grinding the best weapons is annoying and multiplayer is only mission base
@krispybowgod9656 Got a source? I got screwed once too often. MFs released Royal edition and had the balls to release seperate DLC. A year later, they released "definitive" Royal edition. Can't make this shit up.
@ lots of games drop DLc man…. No one is forcing you to buy the game 3 times in a row just to get a bit of extra DLC. If you want to wait 2 years to play the game that’s fine. Just seems like a long wait to get a tiny bit of extra content
Damn, how can i get sooo many hours in my life to even play these, and i LOVE JRPGs... It's rough... The ones i played and LOVED: Rebirth and Persona 3. I still did buy Daybreak (Played everything till Reverie), YS 10, Unicorn Overlord and Metaphor Re:Fantasio. I am thinking of buying Eyuden Chronicles and Romancing saga 2 for my PS5, still have my doubts for SMT 5 tho... Another game that i absolutly loved this year was Stellar Blade even tho it's not an JRPG, it's still an amazing game!
eyden chroniclels hundred heroes is a great game don't know why he said to avoid it however maybe he didn't try it when it came out for ps4/ps5 and said switch and switch might have a long haul with it but its out for every other system if he is gonna b***h about switch load and the only down side apparently was how long it did releaase and the dlc have been delayed and yes im wondering when dlc is coming out

What? Visions of Mana is already out? How did I miss that O.o
Also, I see Full Metal Hugger is still a staple boss XD
It came out like two month ago. I was honestly disappointed. But don`t let that prevent you from playing it.
This year, i played unicorn overload on my own time and currently playing ff7 rebirth
I did also streamed p3r an the dlc, now I'm streaming Metaphor ReFantazio
❤100% agreed! Metaphor ReFantasia is my GOTY🎉
so many rpgs this yr and i cant believe so many were high quality
Eiyuden Chronicle is one of the best JRPGs of 2024 for me
I wasn't as enthralled by We Have Persona At Home. It just seemed like it was missing something that I couldn't put my finger on. I still enjoyed it, but I don't think it'll be one of those games that'll stay with me.
If you’re a Kingdom Hearts fan, you’ll love Reynatis.
pls add chapters to your videos so we can skip games we don't want to get spoiled about :)
Done!
Thank you. Great info for the rest of the year
I loved visions of mana. I think it needed a switch version day 1 to help with sales.
There is never going to be a Switch version
Not even adding in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth makes me honestly sad at this list. Especially when lesser known franchises are added.
Congrats the algorithm has shown me your video
I can vouch for visions of mana it's great fun
Awesome list here. Sadly I agree that Eiyuden Chronicles for the Switch is a real sore spot for me for those exact mentioned reasons. With that said, all 5 mentioned games worth playing definitely a go! Visions of Mana, Metaphor and Granblue I'll have to save for when a PS5 comes along my way. I got other RPG titles to still cross off my backlog. Still need to complete Trails to Reverie before I can even tough the Trails to Daybreak arcs. So far FF7 Rebirth has won me over this year.
TBH, I initially thought that I wouldn’t like Yuffie. In the end, though, I wound up liking her a lot.
its kinda crazy that granblue relink gets ignored a lot by people even tho it was the most successful JRPG launch this year and the only game that broke the +100k concurrent stram players, in a year filled with new entries from the best JRPG franchises relink towers over them all (except rebirth i assume it wouldve done better if we actually have the numbers or if it launched day 1 on steam).
What's your beef with 100 heroes that's a good game
I really wanted to like Reynatis, but not being able to fight after blocking is dumb, I do disagree that it looks bad though, it has a cool art style altogether, I'm more mad that there is no english dub at all. Ofcourse FF7 rebirth looks real good. I might give Slime Isekai chronicles a chance I like games with alot of characters, and the gameplay looks fun, and it's cheaper now.
God... I remember seeing the trailers for Reynatis and thinking, "oh, this looks really cool!"
...and then I found out there wasn't going to be English voice acting and gave it a pass.
Great things you mention :)
i have it for ps5 and agree its great
@@jamesbond99 you mean eiyuden chronicles. yeah it great
Awesome video, Taylor! Good assessments on these!!!
I still getting Eiyuden on Switch because Switch2 is backward compatible 🤔 For Reynatis, I know it's not for everyone, but it reminds me of PS2 era RPG, so I'm picking it up for nostalgia..🙄 Thanks for the list though 🙂
Worth it or not, I'm playing Reynatis because I love JRPG.
Anyone who does not love Yufi has no soul.
Hey could you not use metacritic review scores as a reason for why someone should or shouldn't buy games? I know you have your own reasons for not liking Reynatis, but I wouldn't use the opinions of random strangers from review sites to dictate wheather a game is good or not.
Picking up metaphor refantazio, ff7 rebirth and mario and luigi brothership ill get ys10, vision of mana and grand later
It's a real shame what happened with Visions of Mana.
Rebirth has my interest because I don't like turn based combat. I like controlling the character.
Good to know visions of mana is good
Haven't played Metaphor but the games I've liked this year is SMT5V, FF7 Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord, Stellar Blade, & Goblin Slayer nightmare feast
Thank you!
Metaphor was absolutely unreal. GOTY easily for me
I loved Hundred Heroes, but I did play on PC.
What exactly are “modern sensibilities”?
Low friction, fast start, quick pacing, smooth on-boarding, not overly punitive, easy to learn (possibly) difficult to master.
Taylor, I love your videos but not including Trails Through Daybreak in here is criminal... c'mon man, even if you don't like the series, it deserves to be here.
EC is instant on my pc. with a 4 year old GPU smh 60+ fps all the time usually around 130
Unicorn Overlord needs to come to PC!
- for visions of mana. it is not as good as trails of mana. and the story is kinda schizo. but overall i like the game. been a huge mana fan since i was young. people should check out the demo
- i dont know why people think ff7 remake had a good combat? it was okey, but i wouldnt call it good if the dodge button is cosmetic. you have to block because dodge is unreliable. the only time dodge felt useful was against rufus. so i hope they improved on it. cant wait to play it when it comes to steam.
Granblue has amazing combat, sadly the bosses happen to be reskins with very few changes. And grinding the best weapons is annoying and multiplayer is only mission base
No, it's not.
Metaphors a fantastic game it being up for multiple awards at the game awards show how great of a game it is
Ill wait for the expanded version of Metaphor. Knowing Atlus, the current copies will be obsolete in a year or two.
They literally said they are moving away from the “royal edition” type re releases but that’s your choice
@@krispybowgod9656 Ill go off my own experience and not buy the game at launch
Not unless they re-release Persona 3 Reload 1st adding in the Female MC. 😂
Really don’t play JRPG’s but I want to change that so this video was helpful going to play FF7 remake rebirth first but will try some of these
You're going to have a blast!
And Metaphor is 100+ hours for the first run, not counting NG+ (oh, yes, that is a thing.)
i se you forgot my fav JRPG The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak
