  • JET ENGINES ARE INCREDIBLY LOUD and people living or working close to Airports can get very cross with the noise a modern commercial aircraft like the 737 can make!
    SID's are designed with noise abatement procedures that avoid residential areas as far as possible but what can Airlines do to help further lower noise?
    ICAO states airlines must establish operating procedures for noise abatement during instrument flight operations in compliance with PANS-OPS. These two NADP departures are as follows
    -NADP 1 (Noise Abatement Departure Procedure 1)
    This procedure involves a power reduction at or above the prescribed minimum altitude and delaying flap/slat retraction until the prescribed maximum altitude is attained (3000ft).
    At the prescribed maximum altitude, accelerate and retract flaps/slats on schedule while maintaining a positive rate of climb and complete the transition to normal en-route climb speed.
    - NADP 2 (Noise Abatement Departure Procedure 2)
    This procedure involves initiation of flap/slat retraction on reaching the minimum prescribed altitude (800ft).
    On reaching an altitude equivalent to at least 800 feet AGL, decrease aircraft body angle whilst maintaining a positive rate of climb, accelerate towards Flaps Up speed. At 3000 feet AGL, accelerate to normal en-route climb speed.
    In this tutorial I'll show you how to apply the NADP 1 departure using my operators procedures.
    Here is a useful document from the UK CAA on what they're doing as an authority to manage aviation noise!

      Hi signman Bo, you're most welcome!
      Most things in aviation are that way! You read a procedure in a manual and it often looks pretty complicated but when put into practice it's more often than not quite simple!

    Another welcome & informative video for the flight sim community.
    Copied this from my local airport NAP Arrivals procedure :-
    "Aircraft will be routed clear of populous areas until seawards of the coastline or
    established on their final approach course. To assist with noise reduction on final
    approach course, pilots are requested to delay flap deployment until as late as is
    operationally practicable"
    I am assuming the flap delay means the engines shouldn't be revved up until "operationally practicable". Here's me picturing a quick "flaps full" when getting close to the threshold :)

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому

      Hi Richard! Thanks!
      Haha that's essentially it, if you're lucky you can essentially avoid "revving up" until on short final
      We try and fly all approaches as LDA's (Low Drag Approaches) which helps to both increase efficiency and reduce noise. We try to use idle thrust for all descents and try to avoid flying extended periods at low altitudes by flying a CDA (Continuous Descent)We then plan to configure flaps and gear for landing so we only need to add thrust selecting landing flap. It's more art than science!

    Always very happy to see you've released yet another clip sharing some of your knowledge!
    One thing I wanted to ask not related to the topic discussed in this clip is how much do you hear from the APU when starting it as well as when it's running when sitting in the cockpit? Same question for the engines.
    Reason for my question is I'm trying to modify the existing sounds and would be nice to get them as close to the real thing as possible. I realize it's very hard to describe exactly what you hear using text only but comments such as...
    "You can clearly hear the APU starting as well as running from the cockpit if there's not much other noise close by" or...
    "You won't hear anything from the APU other than the sound the APU switch will make when you flip it to start the APU"
    ...that would be awesome and most appreciated!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Richard!
      You can't hear it from the cockpit unless the aircraft is completely empty and only when you initially power up the aircraft. (Battery on only). As soon as you connect a source of AC power (GPU or APU) it's drowned out by all the background noise in the flightdeck.
      That's the best way I can describe it!

    Nice informative video! I noticed you didn't talk too much about thrust aspect of it. Granted you had a good length of runway and your TO thrust was basically the same as the climb. Are there procedures for when you're flying heavy or have a shortened runway and how can program the climb thrust cutback at a given altitude in the FMC? KSNA is pretty notorious for NADP.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +3

      Hi Kevin
      With regards to Acceleration Height we don't use VNAV for departure here so we don't pre-populate TAKEOFF PAGE 2 prior to take off, we bug up manually using LVL CHG.
      We also leave the default values for reduced climb (CLB 1 and CLB 2) for all departures, even shorts runways where we are field length limited. Depending on what thrust setting we use for takeoff decides our de-rated climb thrust, the FMC will decide CLB-1 or CLB-2 based on what derate we select or/if we decided to use assumed temperature reduction. We don't change it as crew at my operator.
      We always reduce take-off thrust to a safe value to increases the service life of the engine, reduce costs and decreases noise but it's usually based on takeoff/obstacle limits as opposed to noise. At noise sensitive airports like Barcelona (LEBL) where noise compliance is monitored and hefty fines are imposed for non-compliance we follow NADP 1 which is sufficient, even with full 26K and SIDS are designed as practically as possible to reduce noise.
      I only have experience in Europe so it might be different State Side and procedures applied differently else where!
      I hoped this helped answer your query!

    I have watched many of your videos (love 'em all). But one thing I do not recall seeing, and am confused about, is the Acceleration Height, Engine-out Accel Height, and Thrust Reduction as seen on page 2 of the Takeoff page in the FMC. In particular, how does your operator use these, if at all, especially in relation to the two NADP procedures, and also to the Autothrottle, Flight Director, the pitch modes, and the autopilot? If you talked about this in a video, please tell me which one. If not, maybe you could speak to this a bit. THANKS SO MUCH!!!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому +1

      Hi cruisebuddy
      You can modify the Acceleration Height and Thrust Reduction on TAKEOFF REF Page 2. If you then select VNAV for departure (which some airlines do) it will accelerate the aircraft at the height selected on TAKEOFF REF Page 2. As we don't use VNAV for departure we don't pre-populate TAKEOFF REF Page 2 in my company, we do it manually using LVL CHG and "Bugging Up"

    • @flightdeck2sim

      Hi Ruben,
      Both are identical in function, F/O typically engages CMD B and the Capt CMD A, makes no difference. Both must be engaged to fly an Autoland.
      CWS is a mode called Control Wheel Steering, a mode seldom used but allows you to "fly the AP" through the control column, it will hold attitude and pitch for you.

    Thanks for another great tutorial! Quick unrelated question, if an IAP contains a DME arc to make the transition, does the autopilot flies the arc automatically after loading the procedure? Also, can you configure the fmc to fly an arc manually similarly to how you enter a holding procedure?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому

      Hi Manuel Z,
      The ARC should be in the FMC Database if correctly coded and you can use LNAV to simply follow the magenta line.
      You can build an ARC manually by using the fix page in the FMC to create waypoints using a Radial and Distance from the DME Station. It won't be a perfect ARC but good enough!

    hi great video
    I have a question regarding airspeed during the take off. I set the vspeeds on the FMC and dial VR in the MCP. set flaps and arm auto throttle. Line up and set thrust to 40% engage Toga ,rotate at V1 ,as I climb my airspeed will rise passing the flap up speed.
    I cannot reduce thrust unless I turn off auto throttle which I'm sure is wrong. Should I be retracting the flaps as my airspeed increases.
    I looked at your instruments you had throttle hold , I can't remember seeing that before
    I need to understand more on the relationship between TOGA and VR
    Hope I articulated it enough for you to answer me

    • @flightdeck2sim

      Set V2 on the MCP and follow the magenta flight directors accurately after takeoff. The aircraft will pitch to a maintain a speed of V2+20 after takeoff until you pitch nose down to accelerate based on the NADP.

    because you are a real boeing pilot i ask you how is the manual handling of the aircraft i the sim compared to a real aircraft?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому

      Hi Adrian.
      The NGX is a very accurate rendition of the real aircraft and certainly something I can use to improve my knowledge. With regards to handling there are some limitations as there is no feedback from the controls (the need to trim etc) but that's the same with all aircraft on a desktop simulator. The dynamics and how it behaves with certain configurations, attitude and thrust settings are pretty close to the real thing.
      There are some subtle differences between the NGX and real aircraft which I always try to bring to your attention but the flight model is pretty sound.
      For what is essentially an entertainment product it’s certainly worth the investment and it’s realistic enough to accurately show you how to operate the aircraft using real world SOP's and procedures.

      Cheers for the fast reply, thought that was the case! One thing which was an eye-opener for me from your earlier videos is how much you do use the FMC for making changes, rather than just using features of the FCU panel. This is the reverse though, is there a reason why your airline chooses not to use VNAV on departure? When do you usually engage VNAV then?

    Hello Captain ,Great video as always ,i have one question please ,what is the difference between ACCEL HTand Reduction ? and if the noise abatement is related with ACCEL HT ,how can we know the altitude of Reduction ? thanksin advance and keep the heading please

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +1

      Hi SLIM NG,
      Acceleration Height is the height above airport elevation at which flap retraction is initiated. I'm not too sure but it you use VNAV for departure (which some airlines do) it will accelerate the aircraft at this height. As we don't use VNAV for departure we don't pre-populate TAKEOFF REF Page 2 before departure.
      THR REDUCTION is the height at which the auto-throttle reduces thrust to CLB N1. Again for the company I currently work for we leave this at the default value of (1500FT) for all departures regardless of the NADP procedure.
      I hope this helped answer your query!

      It wasn't until the beginning of the year I touched flight sim again after almost 5 years! I've not used X-Plane much (I have X-Plane 10) I had a go but growing with Microsoft Flight Simulator it was a difficult transition! I find FSX far easier to use and for better for IFR/Airline Flying.
      I think X-Plane suits the VFR GA sector more but I've been led to believe there are some excellent products available for X-Plane now. I actually downloaded FSW and quite liked it, I think in time this has the potential to be the "new sim". I'm yet to try P3D but people keep telling me I MUST get it! Haha.
      PMDG NGX is certainly immersive and realistic enough to apply real world operating procedures and a useful training aid for me.

    Sorry for it not being about noise abatement but my question is what is the purpose of putting the gear lever in the middle position?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 років тому

      Hi Joe, no problem!
      Once the gear is in the UP position mechanical locks keep the gear up, moving the gear level to OFF removes the hydraulic power holding the gear up, this increases the life span of the gear HYD actuators.

      Hi Jamie, Maybe it was here or in another channel that I saw that. When comes to VOR's tracking, as you have 2 vor's and course knobs, if you engage A, it will follow that VOR/tracking on the left side, and if B, the VOR on the right side. I think that is the only difference.....but I might be wrong..You can test this easily by setting the same frequence on both sides and different trackings, engage the vor tracking and see which one will follow with B or A. Worth to mention that it's very rare that I see people using VOR navigation on any of the large jets (on youtube...and simmers...which is my only experience as simmer)). This is one of the skills that goes away when you leave the GA planes and move to the big ones. The FMS will do everything and we forget some of the basic stuff....

    I was reading some forums for the NADP 2 procedure and got different answers. Some said I should accelerate to flaps up speed at 800 AGL, other at 1000 and some even at 1500. ..and then I should fly at minimum flaps ups speed to 3000 AGL before speeding up to 250 kts. And then I found this... www.b737mrg.net/downloads/b737mrg_noise.pdf I'm confused now, there is also procedure A and B. Would you please explain these things in more detail, perhaps even in a video?

    Good evening and thank you very much for the videos. Extremely informative and I have learnt a great deal from you already. Just a quick question, I notice that you selected CMD B on the autopilot. Why and when is CMD A or CMD B used or is there no difference?
    thanks again.

    • @kevinw3350
      @kevinw3350 7 років тому +1

      I believe either one is legitimate in usage. CMD A usually goes to the pilot side so it's linked to nav 1, and CMD B is linked to co-pilot/fo side Nav 2. For ILS, both are usually turned on for redundancy in case one fails. So both NAV 1 and NAV 2 need to be set correctly for the ILS freq. I could be wrong though.

      Mostly leave it, certain airports have different rules. You can find the information on the Aerodrome Information part of the chart regarding acceleration heights and thrust reduction altitudes.
