Social pressure. You hit the nail on the head.. Guess I am a sceptic.
My dad was a hypnotist and he practiced on me regularly as I grew up. As he described it, hypnosis just relaxes people, helps them focus and the "theatre" or "ritual" was the stimuli people percieved that gave them permission to do something they would not object to or change a behavior they already wanted to change.

    Hi all,
I'm a Hypnotherapist (C.ht licensed by HMI of Tarzana CA) by profession, and I have to say, awesome job on explaining hypnosis in a layman-friendly way. Steven Graham pretty much said it all, but I would add that hypnosis is a very diverse and complicated subject.
Actually, the hypnotic state is a relatively simple subject, but the difficulty lies in using this state for maximum benefit. Everyone's different, therefore a subtly different and personalized approach is necessary to help each person.
Listen, we could on all day explaining different theories and approaches, but the basics stay the same.
Hypnosis is a natural thing that happens to everyone at least twice a day - when we wake up and before we sleep. Some people slip in and out of 'hypnosis' all day. It's completely natural. Wonderful.
    All the best,
    Tzvi

  • @hypnolux6140
    @hypnolux6140 9 років тому +169

Good job on explaining hypnosis as used by street hypnotists and stage hypnotists (which is for entertainment purposes only). Hypnotherapy on the other hand, involves undergoing hundreds of hours of highly-specialized training and internship in order to successfully treat one's clients.
Hypnotherapy is for treating any number of issues like fear of flying, stage fright, improving one's confidence or self-esteem, eliminating procrastination, quitting smoking and about 143 other issues.
No one can get lost in hypnosis (you would simply fall asleep and wake up later as normal) and no one can make you go against your ethics or morals or do something you do NOT want to do. Hypnosis alone is NOT mind control.
What hypnosis is >> Hypnosis is a focused, state of awareness that relaxes you and allows the hypnotherapist to work on a subconscious level to help you make positive improvements in your life. Hypnotherapy is "guided, self-improvement behavior modification." About 95% of the time you are AWARE of what is happening during hypnosis and can open your eyes at any time. Sometimes (5% of the time) for a specific purpose, you can be taken to the deepest somnambulistic level of hypnosis where you don't remember upon awakening what transpired. Most of the time this is not necessary.
I hope this helps to "de-mystify" the mis-understandings surrounding hypnosis.
NOTE: The type of CONTROL gained over another person that can happen through hypnosis is ONLY achieved with the use of other coordinated tactics: Sleep deprivation, drugs, hallucinogens, electo-shock and other highly-invasive procedures. Mind control and creating "sleepers" can only be achieved using these other strategies in tandem with hypnosis. Hypnotherapists are not covert gov't "black-ops" specialists.
I hope this helps. By the way, I'm a certified, clinical hypnotherapist who graduated from the "Harvard of Hypnosis"... the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana, CA in the Los Angeles, California area.

our school's psychologist/hypnotist conducted a hypnotism session on us to release the anxiety of university entrance exam once, he simply gathered us all in the conference hall with a light soothing music and dim lighting, and started to give a "relaxation speech", just like the one in the beginning of this video ironically , at some point he asked us to imagine a red balloon lifting our right hand, and some of us actually did that, not me though (when my hand didn't rise i had decided to check other people lol) . and he continued with how we were all gonna be relaxed and do well during the exam etc. after the session i asked some of my friends who raised their hands if it was for real and they had told me that they didn't remember anything about it, in conclusion those who seemed to be more open to suggestions haven't done significantly better job in the exam, so i know that the process is really working for some people, not the more artistic ones as it's often claimed to be though because i am an artistic person myself (painting, acting in plays for years etc) and i was fully awake during the whole proccess even though i wasn't resistant, i am just not sure of its effectiveness

I definitely go under and come back with results but also remember most or all of the session and could pull out if I wanted to force myself. The question for me is whether it's a long term fix as I have to repeat the session to get back on track. It lasts usually just that day, but maybe repeat ing it will form a habit. I'll try

Usually trance to me feels like taking a nap but being conscious through out. I listen to the sleep recordings from my favourite hypnotist and they help me sleep in under 30 minutes usually (sometimes I have to listen to two in which case it's almost an hour) which is way faster than me laying on the bed and staring for a n amount of hours waiting for sleep.

Social Pressure. A person in authority wants you to act in response, and you want to respond as expected. Stage performer, doctor, sex guru - whoever is trying to hypnotize you is giving you the opportunity to play along and achieve acceptance - or not.
Some people deeply want to meet the social pressure - but will also not accept that is what drove them to act as they did. So they'll rationalize - I was hypnotized.
That isn't to say that the human brain doesn't behave differently when calm and focused versus distracted and overwhelmed.
Isn't everyone more likely to positively respond to a suggestion given when in a calm, relaxed mood - versus angry or afraid?
In the end - especially with stage hypnotists and the whole "SLEEP" or "act like a chicken" or "raise your arm / finger" nonsense - it all looks like theater, just like how "faith healers" know the "faithful" will react properly when touched - to fall into convulsions and mumble in tongues.
I also wonder if some people actually desire to be mentally dominated / want to be told what to do and what to think - to give up responsibility temporarily - you know, the submissive sort of role in BDSM ?
And so hypnosis is really just a way to achieve, unofficially - a power-exchange dynamic temporarily between the hypnotist and the hypnotized?

My experience with hypnosis is that the reality of it is more like a guided meditation and relaxation. Nobody is going to be able to make you stand up and do crazy things that you don't want to do. I have used downloaded self hypnosis mp3s. Maybe there is more that a live stage hypnotist could do, but I'm not so sure I believe that part of it, I have never experienced it. But there is something to it. The mp3s I listened to were along the lines of boosting self confidence and relaxing in social situations. I think they did help me talk to the woman I'm dating now. You can call it whatever you want, but I'm happy with the end result.
Also, if you don't allow yourself to enter a trance state nothing is going to happen. If you sit there with your arms crossed, tapping your foot, saying this is bullshit, then for you it will be bullshit.

That being said - you will never see me in my right mind clucking like a chicken or thinking the roof is gonna collapse and all the entertainment you see in performances, not in private - not in front of anyone, not ever. i cant believe that someone is "making" them believe subconsciously that they are something else. Nobody knows what hypnosis is. Each generation of hypnotists develops a theory and the next generation knocks it down. We don’t have to know what it is to use it. Nearly any phenomena demonstrated in trance can be reproduced while not in trance. While all trance is hypnosis, not all hypnosis is trance. It's not hard to guide someone into hypnosis. The skill is in what you do with the individual while they are experiencing hypnosis. I’m a consulting hypnotist and I’m constantly amazed at the difference that I can make in people's lives simply by using words. If western medicine relied more on hypnosis than drugs we wouldn’t be having an opioid crisis.

I doubt that I've ever been hypnotized really deeply on purpose. You need a lot of focus for that, which I lack. However, when you give me a good book, I'll be entranced by it before you know it. I could spend hours reading a book, sitting on the same chair in the same position while the world goes on alround me. I won't even hear you if you speak to me. Same goes for archery: When I aim, it's just me, the bow, the arrow and the target. Nothing else. Not to mention that sometimes, the bow becomes me.

Of course hypnosis works, it can be powerful. But not for me or for a minority. A long time ago I took part in a series of tests on hypnosis. During two one-hour sessions, they tried. I was comfortable, but as soon as the hypnotist fed me a suggestion I opened my eyes and said "sorry!".
I find it difficult to relax (some people are like that) and during those sessions I never lost control over my conscious mind.
After the two sessions, I was told I couldn't be hypnotised. I was disappointed. Since then, hypnotists and others have told me that if I want my conscious mind to "lift the barrier" I have to make a conscious effort. A contradiction in terms!

I have once read books stating that there could be some dangerous situations like for example that a woman was made to believe that her husband was a lion- and she attacked him. One man was amde to fall asleep via the word "super". This happened when his girlfriend said this, and the man fell into this deep state, so that the stage hypnotist had to come back saying that this had been the third time. One German therapist made a woman act like a child and told her she should not wake up again- meaning that he had to get deeper into that before the brain had enough by itself. And then I saw a stage hypnotist making a man forget his name and stick his arms to his head. This all frightens me...

In 1726 Handel decided to make London his home permanently, and became a British citizen. (He also Anglicized his name at this time, to George Frideric.) In 1727, when Handel’s latest opera,Alessandro, was being performed, Italian opera in London took a hard hit as the result of a hostile rivalry between two female lead singers. Frustrated, Handel broke away from the Royal Academy and formed his own new company, calling it the New Royal Academy of Music. Under the New Royal Academy of Music, Handel produced two operas a year for the next decade, but Italian opera fell increasingly out of style in London. Handel composed two more Italian operas before finally deciding to abandon the failing genre.

I never really thought hypnosis was real. I saw it done once when I was in the 5th grade . My teacher hypnotised one of my classmates and I it really looked like he was faking it. Then a few years ago I went out with my best friend to a club and one of the entertainers was a hypnotist. He asked for volunteers and she raised her hand and was taken to the back with a few other volunteers . A few minutes later they all came out on stage and each volunteer was told to do something when he said a keyword. My friends keyword was "state". He told her to jump up and start waving and yelling every time he said that word. She came back down and joined me and our other friends and we all sat down to play cards. He was on stage and I had kind of tuned him out and he said "state" and she jumped up and start yelling and waving her hands and then sat back down and kept on playing cards. She had no idea she had even done that.So when asked if I believe that hypnosis is real I say " No , I do not BELIEVE that it is real , I know for a FACT that it is real!

Literally yesterday I accidentally hypnotize myself while staying at a friends house. Now for context it was late about 2am, we stayed up doing nerd stuff and after we hit the hay I was so exhausted and I had to sleep in the most uncomfortable cot ever without a pillow. Now because of that I was curious and in a way bored because I couldn’t fall asleep and what I did was pull out a pocket watch I recently got from temu😂 and just kinda spinned it back in forth and just kept track of it and my vision got extremely blurry and I kinda lost track of what was going on around me and my friend who was reading on his phone next to me but I think I self hypnotized myself and only because it felt really weird and I felt extremely exhausted afterwards like all my tiredness hit at once and kinda fell asleep but also now that I woke up even though I only probably got like 4 good hours of sleep I for some reason feel pretty refreshed. I don’t know why or if I’m just really resilient but yeah that’s my story. I also had coffee when I woke up so maybe that contributed idk but yeah this happened last night

    I know...what a crazy thought huh.
There are a few things that I have come to this conclusion on, some being the way someone is acting right after I cannot remember the last, 5 mins or so for instance or even sitting here, watching a movie and literally not remembering what happened in the last scene while I have been focusing on it the entire time.
I already know I CAN and HAVE been hypnotized, I am just trying to figure out if there is more to it then I have initially believed.

i tend to agree with 99% of his video, and i also believe that 99% of people still have a sense of morality or fear. i also, however believe that a small portion of people between 1-5% will slip into such a deep trance state, that they become super suggestible, almost totally unaware of their surroundings, and probably would ignore fear and morality. saw an experiment a while ago (i will admit, im not 100% sure of its credibility though) where they got a bunch of people together and hypnotized them. then they asked all of them to take off their clothes. anyone that refused or woke up was out of the experiment because it would mean they were knocked out of the trance by the shock of what they were asked to do. the ones that went to the next phase, had to sit in a big tub of ice water, and they were told before they sat in it, that it would be like a hot tub. all but one of them had physical reactions to being put in that bath, increased heart rate, shivering, etc. but one of them just sat there staring straight a head, blank face, until the people got worried and took him out because they couldn't quite understand why he was not reacting. anyway, out of that whole group they found one man who was able to go through with all of it (a correctional officer) without losing his trance state. the next step (and this is why i question its credibility, but this was also the purpose of the experiment. a hypnotist wanted to see if he could create a manchurian candidate, and his answer was, probably, but you would need a very specific kind of person to do it). so anyways they get that guy in a room, and tell him everything is over, thanks for participating, etc etc. but as they go to shake his hand, he had a hypnotic cue where when his arm shook he would go into trance. so they shake his hand and he goes into trance. the hypnotist starts to tell him that downstairs there is a motorcycle with a back pack, in the back pack is a gun, and you are to wait right there, for this specific man to come out, and then you are to kill him. hes very bad, and you will be doing your country a favor". the guy goes downstairs, gets the back pack, gets the airsoft gun and shoots the actor diplomat, and then the guy just stood there like he was confused. it was really weird, and really kinda made me wonder. i still question its credibility though because i have been told for a long time now that that was supposed to be impossible. however, ice bath test was the thing that kinda hooked me. how could he suppress involuntary physical reactions, and if he could, is it a streatch to believe that we could get him to suppress other parts of his brain/psyche. im an amature here, so dont be too harsh on me if im fucking dumb :/

primoaurelius I'm not surprised, actually. I'm not a professional, so I can't say anything about it but my personal feelings on the issue, but I think that the reason he got that far was because /his personal sense of right and wrong/ INCLUDED killing "bad people" as a Good Thing. They made sure to insist that he was doing the country a favor. Not to mention he's a correctional officer. Prison guard, right? He probably felt safe using a gun, and felt alright with violence as long as it's the lesser of two evils.
Not to mention I hear that prison guards are tossed out if they don't meet a certain personality requirement. (In america, anyway.) However, they don't select for good, stable people. They select for sociopaths with weak morals. So hey. Maybe he passed the hypnosis test BECAUSE he was a correctional officer.
Still though, this is all hypothetical. I'm sure you'll find out the truth by just researching that test, and finding out the details.

SUMI AKTER ive been researching hypnosis for years, and experimenting with it on myself and others. im not saying this video is wrong. not at all. the only thing im saying is that the "fear and morality" wall that lots of hypnotists talk about, is not a "wall", its not a 100% guarentee that you will not do something you dont agree with. subliminal messages, NLP, lucid dreaming, meditation, etc etc etc, ive been experimenting on myself with for many years now, and the conclusion i have come to is that most people dont ever reach a very deep trance state. most people, if they do go under, are just barely under. i tend to believe, based upon my own experiences, that the further into the trance you go, the more suggestible you become, or the more strange feelings/hallucinations you will experience. i just dont like working in absolutes. i do not believe that all people would ignore a command that conflicted with their morals. i tend to believe, that a healthy percentage would do it. the milgram experiment on authority figures also suggests this. add hypnosis to that and you can see where im heading. unethical, but still interesting to think about.

I dabble with self hypnosis files I find here on youtube, some work better for me than others, and I'm sure others might work better for you than for me. Hypnosis is a learnable skill, one that takes hard work and effort to get good at, I still have trouble getting relaxed enough to get into trance, but I can tell I'm getting better the more I do it. If you get into a good solid trance your body should feel like a statue and you should feel heavy, like it would take effort to lift your arm. Self hypnosis is not a magic bullet that will cure everything over night, I try to make myself do an hour of hypnosis every night to help with depression, anxiety, motivation, and basically everything else in my head that needs re programming. Hypnosis is for your mind what going to the gym is for your body. It takes hard work. Cause believe it or not its hard to sit as still as a statue for 30 minutes or longer.

    • @Nork490

I don't know much about meditation but from what I gather they seem similar. I've even heard of hypnosis referred to as 'guided meditation,' as in hypnosis is basically meditation but with two parties involved. The hypnotist makes the suggestions to reorient the mind of the person being hypnotized. Also, hypnosis goes a step further when you get into stage hypnosis in which 'instant inductions' are used. Basically, an instant induction puts a person into a trance instantly from which the hypnotist can almost hijack a persons actions. You can resist though, anyone that's been hypnotized by a stage hypnotist will tell you that they could have resisted but it felt easier to go along with it.

I would like for you to reply to this as soon as possible. I'm just gonna ask a few questions. 1-in hypnosis, like let's say your told you won't be able to move your legs for 15 minutes, I know it's mental, but like is it just you thinking, and not giving physical effort that makes you not be able to move them, (I can do that without hypnosis, like I try to in my head but not physically) or is it with your head, but physically. like you can try your hardest and nothing will happen while physically trying to move your legs. that's my main question. 2-if your answer to my first question is that you physically can't move even trying to move your muscles in your legs to move them like, then how do I go into trance, I'll look up other methods, but still, as i try I just can't seem to do it. thanks in advance. :)

I had no fear and I was so scared before that I broke out in hives and sweat so bad my clothes would be soaked. I even got told once I was not allowed on the plane because I was sweating so bad with blotchy hives and so nervous but the Hypnosis worked until we hit a really bad wind storm and bounced around like a bouncy ball and the plane had to go back up into the sky several times before landing and then it all came flooding back from the back of my mind and now I’m fearful again and don’t get on planes. A mild suggestion. Stage magicians who hypnotise people to act like a chook, that's pretty much always faked. It's not a good example. Hypnosis is very real. It can be used to implant false memories. Some people are very good subjects and some are not, but people are typically (and hilariously) very bad at predicting whether or not they're a good subject. And you don't need a terribly good understanding of what you're doing or how it works to be a good hypnotist. Instinct is often better than logic.

By and large stage magicians do magic and don’t hypnotize people. Stage hypnotists do a hypnosis act, whatever that might mean. Let's make that distinction at least.

Playing horror games are also a hypnosis... specially those old looking once... imagine jumping out your chair out of fear towards a pixilated ghost or monster ...

Hypnosis only really works when the person being hypnotized, whether is be consciously or subconsciously, believes it works. If you have an adamant skeptic who refuses to believe that hypnotism is a legitimate thing and has absolutely no doubt whatsoever in their mind about that they will become damn near impossible to hypnotize. But as soon as you have that small shred of doubt it becomes easier.
