After a short time owning my Honda Acty it was time to swap out the timing belt, water pump and gaskets to keep its service records up to date.

counter clockwise is correct, he was turning the engine backwards. He also didn't tension the belt correctly. That's what the spring does. You could hear the belt was too tight when he started it up.
