I've been a Hone Theater enthusiast for about 15 years. Chris, thanks for taking some fairly complex topics and making them more easily digestible. Great information!
It was a constant battle in my head. Projector or tv. Yesterday I almost decided on the tv, for being easier to set up and other convenient things. Today, I changed my mind and started to prep my room for the only thing that makes movies great. A projector. Painted the ceiling black. I'll order a 4k projector.
I went to a projector set up about 10 years ago. It’s my main go to TV setup. I’m on my 2 projector system in my new home. This time I went with a Optoma Ultra Short Throw Projector.
Same here, my mom wanted a projector for some of her lectures with her friends, and we didnt buy a tv for the new home yet, so once we got her the projector we've been using it instead of a TV and you can't imagine having a such nice 70" tv for the price of 350$ .. and we can even scale it up to 120" and it would still look good if we sit afar from the wall
Chris Majestic, your original video was what concluded my decision to build my HT. One of the BEST decisions I've made in my home (especially with having to stay home these past few months) and I haven't looked back! Keep doing what you do!!
I just got myself an Epson TW5650 with a 5:1 home cinema surround (though my speaker placements aren’t ideal due to the weird shape of the room), with a Pioneer VSX-934. I’m still fiddling with my volume configurations, and I still need to mount the projector on the ceiling. I’ve never had a setup like this before, and I absolutely LOVE IT. Just be aware that such a setup requires: ample research; decent speaker cables; proper stands and mounts; long HDMI cable (to run from projector to receiver); a good extension socket; a longer power cable than the one supplied with your projector (again, in order to reach receiver at front of room). It’s a lot of work, and a lot of learning, and reading reviews etc. But so far, it’s been 110% worth the effort. The fact that I can watch Jurassic Park 3D on a big screen with DTS Virtual X, in my own living room, is enough to bring tears to my eyes. I’m currently projecting 74 inches on a white painted wall, but will be buying a 100 inch screen soon. Can’t wait. Loving this journey of home cinema.
ppl dont know about the projector life. its the absolute best if you get a quality model, and now the 3 bulb lcd projectors are cheaper than ever with 4k being around for longer now. great vid keep going!
Went from a quite cheap Epson EH-TW3200 to an expensive 65" OLED TV (in my living room). Although the contrast is worse during the day on a projector i think the image is generally much better. Much more natural and no strange artifacts that is visible from time to time on the TV. After 3 years with the OLED im thinking about going back to a Projector.
Yeah, 3D does work better on bigger screens. On Sub-100" screens the effect is not as good, but I can see why Flat Panel TV's have dropped support for 3D. I just hope it never goes away from Projectors. I've given up on Flat Panel TV's and use a Projector as a Daily in the living room. Day or night. It's wonderful having a glare free experience. I figured that if I am going to close the blinds to eliminate glare, I may as well get a projector. Luckily, my projector is bright enough to work during the day with the blinds open too...and I can still see the image, colors, etc REALLY well and a CLEAR, CRISP image!
I too agree with you and a big high definition 3d fan. 3d even on a 85 inch tv cannot even come to a bigger projector image like 135 or even 150 inch. For 3d certainly bigger the better. By the way I still use a 55inch 3d tv which is good but I also have a 120 inch screen where I use the epson projector tw 8200 and here the 3d is just unbelievable. Haven't upgraded to 4k and the reason. Well another story so next time on dat
@SFbayKID 3D died on Flat Panel TVs due to the prohibitively expensive cost of a 100" Flat Panel TV screen to be able to enjoy the full 3D effect. Otherwise, on Flat Panel TV's 85" or smaller, 3D looks "Meh". People that have replaced their tiny flat panel TVs with 100" and up Projectors for daily use, lights on or off, have been using 3D like crazy.
@@davidbeiler6364 yes, in the projector world, people use 3D A LOT. However, there also is a large group of projector owners that don't use 3D due to it giving them headaches, etc.
Excellent job explaining everything there is to know about projectors in such a short amount of time. The side by side comparison of the types of projectors was especially helpful.
How odd, two days ago, I was thinking whether or not to buy a big screen, or a projector. Your older video was so informative it made me subscribe, and now you release a brand new video years later. Awesome
I'm still using my JVC RS-10 in our dedicated media room with full light control and a 100" screen. I'm totally open to getting a 4K TV but they sure do look tiny by comparison.
Awesome video! I’m a projector user and I have two sub $100 projectors. I wanted to see if I could use them in place of a large tv. Luckily my apartment has very little direct sunlight. With both of them mounted (in different rooms) I can watch them even in the daytime. Note that I know I like them I want to spend a little more money. This video helped my research a bunch!
I've been looking at getting a projector for a while and I didn't have much of a clue of what I was looking at, until I saw this video. The brightness vs colour accuracy point you made particularly made a lot of sense. Thanks for this update and looks like you'll be back with another (8k) update in 2025! Here's to seeing you once again in 2025 then. Good day to you, my friend.
I now recommend all your video's to my customers. Great that you just give us the fact, not the opinionated BS that goes with. Can you PLEASE do a video on 4:4:4 at 48ghz 12 bit which seems like a waste at the moment as most oleds are throttled at 10 bit 40ghz... it would be very helpful for clients. Can I suggest the recent HDTV test video as a reference... love your work 😉
You single-handedly convinced me to get a projector instead of a TV for my dorm room. I really love and I do not have to deal with the stress of carrying a huge tv. I got a budget projector tho. The Vankyo V630 and I love it.
Great video! Covered a lot of information very quickly. As a AV integrator, I would add a couple things, though; when using an ultra short throw projector, the quality of your viewing surface is especially important. Where a standard projector can be forgiving of an irregular surface, ultra short throw projectors will highlight ripples and waves, which in turn can really mess with the geometry of the picture. Ultra short throw projectors will almost always require a tensioned viewing surface. Even if you elect to project directly on to the wall, you will need to prepare that surface to remove texture and cover with a proper white, as the angle of the light hitting it will accentuate a poor viewing surface. Also, a good test as to whether a projector is right for you is to tape a piece of white paper to the wall you intend to project on. Turn off your lights, close you curtains, etc. This white paper represents the darkest black you will ever see. There are screens to help with this and of course anything you can do to keep light from hitting the screen will do wonders. Of course sometime sacrificing video quality and accuracy for giant picture that takes up the whole wall is just fun enough.
Great video let's one get a taste of the direction they may want to go in. You probably could do a whole segment on HDR TV vs HDR projectors as well. The pros and cons if one is seeking quality vs size .... Dolby Vision etc
Just today I resumed my thoughts on getting to plan my movie room, and the first question I had was deciding between a big TV or a 4K projector, and BAM, your video shows up. Thanks for your quality content.

I like it when people show both confidence and knowledge, you have a new sub sir. Just finished watching you LG HU70LA review as well, on point knowledge and review, highly appreciated.
A projector just makes everything bigger, better and more exciting...Watching the telly is just boring in comparison. If it makes sense to have a projector...ie You can close the curtains..Get the projector and go to the cinema every day! Love Chris Majestic. Very professional and sensible advice.
I still laugh when I go to Best Buy and see 85 inch TVs for $1800 to $3000. Have fun getting that home and setting it up. You need 2 people but 3 would be better. Great video! I just found your channel today. I really like your basement setup. It is really similar to what I have.
This is the best basic info video I have seen in a while. Great work! BTW... that crud projector was not advertising lumens, they used lux which is what most of the low end machines do. It is a different measurement all together and they are hoping you mix it up with lumens to get the sale... shameful.
Awesome video! Was thinking of buying a projector for my living room but it is way to bright, watching your video made me realize a tv is still the best bet for me :)
If you have space the best thing is to have both , I have lg pf1500 led projector and it's not that expensive it's 1080p but looks great and led lamp lasts for ever , I have had it for 2 years and still going strong
I have an 55" OLED TV that I want to put in my bedroom and have a projector in the living room so...I'm loovin Your channel - thanks for dozens of nice reviews and comparisons! ;) Yesterday I was learning about pixel shifting and that was suuper important ;)
Hi Chris, can you please do a video of how to perfectly blend speakers when buying receivers e.g When you buy a 7.2 Channel AV receiver someone can buy the "bundled" speaker system that you will recommend .... You can differentiate them by price categories.
There's something special about projected light. I'm using an old Panasonic 4:3 projector in our current setup with a high-gain painted wall. Coincidentally, I calculated the difference between its projected image (114" diag) and the 19" TV I watched as a teen. Projector image is 35x larger, which would have blown my teen mind. We watch a lot of 4:3 content. Last TV show night with the kids was Leave It to Beaver, Max Headroom and The Tomorrow People. :-) Rock on projector people.
Great reviews for the hobbyists. As TV prices fall and surpass 86” and hit 92”, projector manufacturers should lower their insane inflated prices. All these consumer level projectors are very cheaply made and not worth their asking prices. Any decent LG or Samsung TV will always blow a consumer level 4k projector out of the water for clarity, motion, HDR, and can be viewed in daylight or night. A 4k projector with a screen is not that portable either. Take this from a former (well paid) Barco employee. Buy a big TV.
I stuck in a dilemma. I need a big screen because we sit 5-6m away. Our livingroom is heading north but this side is completely covered with windows. Because of north there is no direct sunlight through the windows. Now I’m thinking of a midrange 85“ tv or a ultra short projector with a special 100“ screen for this type of projector. Pro TV: bright on daylight, cheaper than ultra short projector + special screen Pro UST projector: size, no reflection. Me personal not interested in 4K (normal TV is still not sending in 4K, even real FHD is still not on every programm), 3D, smart funktions (because I feed this stuff external) So, questions: do I take the reflections on a TV screen (they are all glossy) or is a UST Projector with the special screen bright enough on daylight. Hmmmm,...
So for a given price of say $1500-2000, would a smaller true 4K/8K TV give a better experience than a projector, projecting a bigger surface but with 1080p. I have no experience of home cinema so I dont know what I would prefer myself. I will be sittin at a distance of about 12ft from the screen. Purely for movies.
Awesome video. Could we get an updated screen material to use. Ones for low or high lumens. Etc etc. I have a harder time picking out a screen than the protector itself.
Great info. 👍 I have a Optoma UHD51A and like it a lot. I bought it before I bought a 4K tv. For some reason I find watching movies on the big screen a lot more enjoyable than a small tv. I also bought a couple of those really cheap projectors off Amazon, just not for watching movies and shows. I bought them for using Atmos FX Halloween effects. They work great for things like that. 👻
Nice video. I am in the market for a home theater projector. The info on the lumens amount really helped. I was thinking more is best, but not so since this will be in a dark room. Thanks!
Hi Chris, Great videos learning a lot from you. I was looking to see if you have done reviews on outdoor screens and projectors? Do you have any suggestions on what to look for? Thanks
Im a student who has move houses quite regularly. I was thinking of getting a budget 1080p projector that I can carry around with me, How bad are the budget options really?
Great video, thanks! Another potential con for the 4K UST laser projectors is the lag-time for gaming... curious if 2020 sees any new releases in this space for the ultra-short throw that have better processing power for decreased lag time. Do you have any sense on when new 4K UST laser projectors will be releasing this year, and what features might be forthcoming? I've been looking at the Optoma P1 but don't want to pull the trigger quite yet when something significantly better is likely to be released this year.
Hey your videos are fantastic for someone trying to get into that “home theater life”. I am currently adding a movie room to my basement and need a recommendation. I’m stuck between getting the BenQ HT3550 and the Sony VPL-VW295ES. Both seem really great but which would you personally go with and why? Keep up the fantastic content!
105” ish screen , basement very dark , I need a new project to blow my Mind . I rarely game and mostly watch Netflix and movies . Large room , I pick up on rainbows and imperfections. Honestly willing to spend 3gz . What’s your top 2 ??

i don't need all the smart stuff on a tv, and wanting a tv in 75 inch and up, the costs are going up waaaay to fast for me, would you please shoot a sort of 500 dollar projector comparising video? full HD is fine an audio out would be great ! thanks !
Does walmart have a descent projector around 200 bucks? And what about the screen? I just want a home theater on a huge wall with no windows, a 70 inch will be fine, maybe a little larger
Just picked up the Optoma CinemaX Pro and loving it so far. Got it paired with a 120" Grandview Dynamique ALR Screen. I wanted the LG so bad!! but the lack of 3D put me off. That and the white color
Hey what up Chris I’m glad I found you. Man I love your videos. Question what projector do you recommend for a backyard? Looking for something that has a great picture but obviously not looking to spend a lot of money because it will be a backyard projector. Thanks so much and I appreciate your time.
Chris, please could you update your video "Home Theater Projector Setup" if 2019 and 2020 brought some new toys which make things easier to build such project? Also I'd like to hear opinion about "ultra short throw vs regular projectors". Thank you.
I’ve got a loft with 18 foot windows so there’s lots of natural light. It’s a large room and there’d be 3 viewing angles and distances (furthest being 25 feet). Stick with 85 inch 4K tv vs an expensive ust projector with 100-120 inch screen. Thanks.
I have tried to look but I can't see anything about any new UST 4K models coming out. Is anything better than the Optoma P1 going to be released this year for around the same price? The 5k LG is a bit too expensive for me.
I have an OLED and a projector. Projector are obviously harder to set up. But once you finish it’s hard to go back to a TV. Projector is not as colorful as a tv but the size difference gives you on another level of entertainment. I highly suggest to try a projector if you already have a smart tv at home. It really makes a big difference.
I have a question, I have a projector that is about 6 years old works fine. I have purchased a receiver and blu-ray player... now I don't have any sound or video. My question is do I need to upgrade my projector?
I really don't see the point in 8K in general yet, I mean the CG in most movies (with a few exceptions) still delivers in 2k, meaning someone up-ressed it before it hit the "4k" blu ray.
@4:43 when you say that the YABER doesn't actually produce anywhere near the advertised 6800 lumens is this something you tested with a measurement tool or are you speculating? If you tested it how many lumens did you measure?
Hope all is well! Help.... just stumbled across your videos. Any tips on indoor/outdoor projectors. Primary for outdoor yard.... but after watching your videos, maybe occasional use in the house.. looking at view sonic 3600. Thank you
Great vid !very informative. My main concern for buying a projector is medium/long-term maintenance. What happens with DLP or LED projectors if there is an issue out of the product's warantee years? For example: Is it safe to look for a lamp after let's say 5 years? Is it going to still be on the market? Grateful if you replied, Chris!
Hi Chris have you by any chance heard of (CACACOL Updated JmGO U1 Native 4K) it's on Amazon. Also you are always resourceful and well spoken great job Chris Majestic.
Need your help, so I have this 90 inch projector screen but not an projector. I live in an basement and will use the projector for gaming and movies on Xbox one. I have no clue about 1080 or 4K but I have an budget off 300-350$
Very helpful information. You say be cautious of projectors for sale on certain websites. Do you recommend a website to purchase projectors that a person won’t get fleeced or sold a less than truthful product?
I was almost ready to purchase an ust projector until I saw how bad the input lag is for gaming. When do the manufacturers usually release their new models? I don’t want to buy last years projector at £3000+ only to find a newer model with the fixed input lag issue.
Can I ask you a question? I don't have the space (or more accurately I do, but it would look really bad) for a TV, but I have a pretty big white wall. I also don't want to spend 500 dollars on a projector, and this "Topvision T26 Projector" costs like 160 dollars and I would also get a Chromecast. (I can easily shut the windows to get rid of like 95%of light) So what do you think of this option? Thanks in advance!

It is a different measurement all together and they are hoping you mix it up with lumens to get the sale... shameful.
Love you commentary! I’m looking to make my first purchase in a home theater projector system. Leaning towards an ultra short-throw projector.
I just want to say thank you, this channel is really cool and I’ve learned a lot. Merry Christmas to you and yours brother.
Awesome video! Was thinking of buying a projector for my living room but it is way to bright, watching your video made me realize a tv is still the best bet for me :)
Great video - that was the best and most informative video I have ever seen regarding projectors! Thanks for posting!
Thank you a lot man, it really enlighted me . Also you projection room is amazing!
If you have space the best thing is to have both , I have lg pf1500 led projector and it's not that expensive it's 1080p but looks great and led lamp lasts for ever , I have had it for 2 years and still going strong
Hi. What would you recommend for outdoor/backyard night viewing? Thanks so much!!
Thanks for this article. I have the same setup in my home. I also took the liberty to buy the Lg hu85la for my basement. Wowww, I love it!
Great video. I was looking at upgrading my projector until I ran across a 85” Samsung QLED for $900 @ BJ’s wholesale.
I have an 55" OLED TV that I want to put in my bedroom and have a projector in the living room so...I'm loovin Your channel - thanks for dozens of nice reviews and comparisons! ;) Yesterday I was learning about pixel shifting and that was suuper important ;)
Awesome review man! I did one of these vids last week but yours is better! LONG time fan of your channel too :D
Nice summary! 👏🏻. I’ve been following your channel for a while. Just want to say thank you 😊
Hi Chris, can you please do a video of how to perfectly blend speakers when buying receivers e.g When you buy a 7.2 Channel AV receiver someone can buy the "bundled" speaker system that you will recommend ....
You didn't talk about the few down sides of projectors though, like fan noise and operation costs of electricity and replacement bulbs
Super clear and informative, thanks! I'm thinking a projector is also easier on our eyes vs a screen, really leaning to get one
Hi Chris... great review and very educational... what would you suggest for everyday use under $500
Great reviews for the hobbyists.
Pro TV: bright on daylight, cheaper than ultra short projector + special screen
Pro UST projector: size, no reflection.
Me personal not interested in 4K (normal TV is still not sending in 4K, even real FHD is still not on every programm), 3D, smart funktions (because I feed this stuff external)
So, questions: do I take the reflections on a TV screen (they are all glossy) or is a UST Projector with the special screen bright enough on daylight. Hmmmm,...
Awesome video! Answered all the questions I didn't know I had and more. Very informative without being too technical and very clear! Kudos!
Nice video! Now need some extra input. What projector would you recommend for outdoors but with good 4k quality and a long distance display.
Awesome video. Could we get an updated screen material to use. Ones for low or high lumens. Etc etc. I have a harder time picking out a screen than the protector itself.
Great info. 👍
I have a Optoma UHD51A and like it a lot.
Thanks!
Is there a worry about the bulbs? How long would one last before needing a replacement?
Hi Chris,
Great videos learning a lot from you. I was looking to see if you have done reviews on outdoor screens and projectors? Do you have any suggestions on what to look for?
Thanks
I get anxious about leaving a TV on and was thinking maybe a projector will be better so thank you for the video
Great video Chris! Man... I need that background track. Old school at it’s finest 👍🏾
Erykah Badu ft The Roots - You Got Me
Your videos are the best. I love the projector reviews.
Projector all the way. I can't imagine going back to a TV now.
One of the Best Ideas of SoundProofing is "SoundProof Curtains" That Stops Outside Noise by 80% (25 Db) Tested. Check Here: livesoundproof.com/best-soundproof-curtains/
Agreed
Just got the miroir hd pro projector hd pro. Im not going back to a tv , took gaming to another level for me.
85" tv shit on projector anyday.
@@MB-wq8cp yes it does !
How do you think the image of a dated projector, like the epson 1040 would fare in today's market?
i don't need all the smart stuff on a tv, and wanting a tv in 75 inch and up, the costs are going up waaaay to fast for me,
would you please shoot a sort of 500 dollar projector comparising video? full HD is fine an audio out would be great !
thanks !
Only element I would have included in the comparison is power consumption, is that a factor to consider?
Thank you.
What do you think of the JVC projectors which use LCoS technology? They seem to have the best black levels in the industry, but they start at $6000.
I’ve got a loft with 18 foot windows so there’s lots of natural light. It’s a large room and there’d be 3 viewing angles and distances (furthest being 25 feet). Stick with 85 inch 4K tv vs an expensive ust projector with 100-120 inch screen. Thanks.
What about a projector on a curved screen? Perhaps 180 degree ? Thanks.
I have tried to look but I can't see anything about any new UST 4K models coming out. Is anything better than the Optoma P1 going to be released this year for around the same price? The 5k LG is a bit too expensive for me.
subscribed! Nice and efficient review. No bullshit just straight to the point! We need more people like you on youtube!
I know this is for gaming but can you recommend 2-3 projectors for strictly outdoor use?
Thank you
I have an OLED and a projector.
Yessss my favorite UA-camr dropping some good content 😎
@4:43 when you say that the YABER doesn't actually produce anywhere near the advertised 6800 lumens is this something you tested with a measurement tool or are you speculating? If you tested it how many lumens did you measure?
Hope all is well! Help.... just stumbled across your videos. Any tips on indoor/outdoor projectors. Primary for outdoor yard.... but after watching your videos, maybe occasional use in the house.. looking at view sonic 3600. Thank you
My budget is less.. do you suggest to go for yaber? I am concerned as it is a Chinese brand.
I didn’t know Chris rock has a nerdy cousin who is into TV. Cool. You learn something every day.
What about refresh rate? It seems like you ignore refresh rates when those are pretty important.
Hi Chris have you by any chance heard of (CACACOL Updated JmGO U1 Native 4K) it's on Amazon. Also you are always resourceful and well spoken great job Chris Majestic.
VAVA ultra short throw projector or a 4K standard throw? Must be 4K and under $3,000.
Need your help, so I have this 90 inch projector screen but not an projector. I live in an basement and will use the projector for gaming and movies on Xbox one. I have no clue about 1080 or 4K but I have an budget off 300-350$
Hey, great review!! what color of the wall will you recommend in a basement?
Very good, but you didn't mention if picture shifting is real 4K. Native resolution ?
Very helpful information. You say be cautious of projectors for sale on certain websites. Do you recommend a website to purchase projectors that a person won’t get fleeced or sold a less than truthful product?
Awesome video's Chris! I jumped into the projector world about a year ago. Love the results
I was almost ready to purchase an ust projector until I saw how bad the input lag is for gaming. When do the manufacturers usually release their new models? I don’t want to buy last years projector at £3000+ only to find a newer model with the fixed input lag issue.
What’s the best outdoor projector? Want one for the yard
Great video! What would be the best projector for outdoors under $600? Thank you! Loved the video!
