All here for this diverse list of anticipated reads! I think it's actually more fun to put some reads out of your comfortzone on a list like this, because they often get neglected for the fantasy reads (at least for me) so this is a great way to keep them on your radar. If I have the time, I am definitely joining for Spear in January. If not, I will for sure read it next year because I LOVED The Vanished Birds and now I want more of his writing! 🤩 And I am soooo excited for you to dive into Red Rising. You might actually be pleasantly surprised by how much you enjoy book 1, it's just pure brain candy but also has a lot of substance and it only builds and builds from there. Hope you enjoy all of these books, happy reading Colin 🥰
I agree! I tend to genuinely just get so wrapped up in series that I forget about other reading plans I had or they just slip to the wayside because I just want to know what happens next in the series I’m reading. I’m hoping to be a little stricter with myself in terms of forcing myself to explore this upcoming year. And that’s great to hear about Red Rising!!! It’s really this first book I’ve been the most nervous about starting because I’ve heard so many varied reactions of it. Thanks so much as always, Esmay, and happy holidays!!!
@@ColinsCornerYT Exactly, it's so easy to get sucked into the hype or into certain worlds you're already familiar with. Though, no need to be 'stricter' with yourself. Just go with the flow and let the mood take you where it wants to. Yes, it's good to go outside of your comfortzone, but the most important thing will always be that you have fun ;))) And happy holidays to you, too!! 🥰
Some great books there, Colin, and it’s cool that you’re branching out in your reading. Crime and Punishment left me depressed for weeks when I read it some thirty-five years ago. Perhaps reading it slowly will help! I’m glad you were feeling well enough to film this.
Oh wow, maybe I shouldn't start it right after the holiday season when everyone comes back down to earth emotionally for a while haha. I think branching out is important! It's very easy to just stay comfortable in my main genres of enjoyment at times. Thanks for watching, Philip!
I think you're going to be surprised at just how accessible Crime and Punishment is. I'm pretty sure it was originally released in installments in some kind of publication, and as a result the chapters in the various parts have almost cliffhanger-like endings. If it hooks you, you won't want to stop.
Oh wow, okay! That eases my feeling of intimidation a lot. I’m certainly excited to get out of my comfort zone and experience a classic like Crime and Punishment. Thanks for watching and for the thoughtful comment!
I've read a lot of these and Lonesome Dove is in my top 10 all time favorites. Have not read C&P. I have War and Peace on my list, bought it in audible so hope to start that this coming year, as my classic pick. I started reading it 20 years ago but only got about 20% in. Will participate in the read along for Spear, looking forward to that. In Cold Blood is so good, so scary, so real. Enjoy is not quite the right word, but it is definitely memorable. I'm happy to see you branching out. I only read about half fantasy out of the 100 or so books a year I read. There are so many good books, why limit yourself. Well, you aren't! Sorry you are sick, you sound pretty good in the video. Hope you continue to be on the mend!
Another one claiming very high praises for Lonesome Dove! I know, “enjoy” felt like the wrong descriptor, but I do hope In Cold Blood can get me to really think and explore some things I haven’t before. War and Peace is a beast! How many pages is it/how long is it on audible? Thanks for the well-wishes and for watching. I appreciate you!
Great video 🙂 For a sick dude, you kept remarkably focused & energized! I am impressed that you are challenging yourself with books outside of your comfort zone...you will learn new things & by extension, so will we! I have read "In Cold Blood" and as you said, because it is based on true events, it has more impact. It effected me as a reader in a way similar to how I felt as I read "Helter Skelter" about the Manson Murders. Get well soon, bud!
Thanks for the well-wishes, I appreciate it! Hopefully you guys will still enjoy watching my videos if it isn't necessarily 100% fantasy/sci-fi/ horror based. Helter Skelter is another book that has piqued my interest for a while, I'm glad you brought that up!
Thanks for the shout out man!!! I'm excited for this read along and can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts. Count me in when you decide to read Dune, I did the audio this year but I wasn't really paying much attention, so I'd like to physically this one.
No problem brother, you've given me some great recommendations recently and I need to return the favor since you've gotten into The Dark Tower! I will certainly let you know when I plan on reading Dune, maybe we could do some kind of loosely structured readalong and chat about it.
I hope you're feeling better Colin! I can confirm that Something Wicked This Way Comes is an exceptional novel from one of our greatest writers. The same could be said for The Road as well, it and No Country For Old Men was my first McCarthy novel. I can't remember which. Hilariously, I am also hoping to read Lonesome Dove next year. Let's team up and compare notes once we do so. Great video as always Colin. Keep it up my man!
I’m very excited for Bradbury. Also, No Country for Old Men is one of my favorite films of all time so I’d love to check out that novel sometime! We can certainly try and coincide our read of Lonesome Dove possibly, I don’t really have any dates in mind let me know if you have any plans.
Dude, this is a fantastic list, and I'm not exaggerating. So many of these I wanna get to myself. Lonesome Dove-- still reigns as my #1 of 2023. You're going to love it, I have full confidence 💯 In Cold Blood-- I read this immediately after Ship of Magic, so I don't have to explain why it took me a minute to get into it. BUT, it hit me like a freight train when it did. The less you know about it, the better. Don't go Googling the case beforehand 😄. The further in you get, the more heinous and emotional you'll feel it. Sorry to hear you caught the big C! I had it over last Christmas and it was a drag. I hope you get well soon!
Oh nice, maybe we will have a lot of overlap again this upcoming year! I’ll be excited to chat with you in Discord about Lonesome Dove as I make my way through it. Same with In Cold Blood. I have had it as my Patreon pick for Jimmy’s channel for a while and haven’t gotten picked, but I don’t want to hold off anymore 😂. Thanks for watching and for the well-wishes, Anthony!
Yay! Crime and Punishment is an amazing book Colin I hope it works for you! It'll test your patience for sure, but it's a great exercise in slowing down and letting things stew. It's very rewarding. I was also intimidated for yeeears by it but I finally just figured, hey, it's a book. Just read. And however long it takes, who cares. I also paired it with audio, where I'd double up the chapters I read by listening to it. Fantastic way to bring more life to the characters. Cheers for the shout-out, C.
I think I need to be challenged in order to grow as a reader, and it sounds like this will certainly give me a run for my money! Pairing with the audio is a great idea as audiobooks work really well for me in most cases. I'll be excited to chat with you about my thoughts whenever I finish this one.
Some big names on this list, most I have to get to as well! I can say for sure that I’ll be diving into more Discworld in 2024. Looking forward to another great year, Colin 🤘🏽
- Read Dune a few years back when they first announced Denis Villeneuve was adapting it for the big screen (one of my favorite directors). Needless to say, it blew my mind! - I NEED to get to Red Rising next year, too! It is a bit disheartening starting a series where you know everyone says the first book isn't great LOL - Bradbury is on my list for 2024, as well. Need to dig into more classics! - Lastly - read what you want to read! Don't need to stick to specific genres - us viewers really appreciate hearing your thoughts on whatever you read - being classics, sci-fi, fantasy, etc!
I’m excited to see where I end up with Red Rising, so many people just love it! Glad you plan on reading some Bradbury as well! And thank you for the kind and encouraging words, same goes to you, my friend!
The Spear Cuts Through Water is one I’d like to read too. I’m a big fan of Dune, hopefully you enjoy that! My brother loves Dostoevsky and I still need to read him. I need to read some more Ray Bradbury, I also read him in English class but that’s it. He’s considered one of the great American writers along with Fritz Leiber and others. The Spiral Wars is a great sci-fi series. I read book 1 of it at the same time as book 1 of The Expanse and I continued Spiral Wars and not The Expanse (yet).
Maybe you can join us in our readalong if you don't have any other pressing plans in January for The Spear Cuts Through Water. I have a feeling that we are both going to enjoy revisiting Bradbury very much. And thank you so much for the sci-fi series recommendation! I've never heard of that one before but I am going to look it up and see how the premise sounds!
The Spear Cuts Through Water is also on my list because I can't say no to Dan...but it's been on my TBR for a while anyway due to Evie's endorsement. Senlin Ascends was amazing Colin, something tells me you are going to like it. It's a series I need to pick back up in 2024 as I only have the first. I hope you enjoy Red Rising. I'm on Iron Gold (the 4th book). Morning Star (book 3) is one of my top reads for 2023. -Cheers!
Dan certainly has a way with words and is a great salesman! I love to hear that you think I'll enjoy Senlin Ascends, I think one of the reasons I've been putting it off (which doesn't make much sense) is because I know I'll like it and want to fly through the rest of it and I already have some other big series going currently! And dang, one of your top reads of the year! I need to get to Red Rising soon! Thanks for watching man!
If you're going to read Scifi, you have to try the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. I read it as a teenager and was blown away with the scale of the book - 10,000 years of barbarism throughout the galaxy! They're short and they hold up reasonably well for being 70 years old. Also, add me to the list of people who has Lonesome Dove in my to 5 all time list. Happy reading!
Oooh nice, I own an old-school leather-bound bind-up of The Foundation! I inherited it from my parents who didn’t want to store it any longer and I said I’ll take it! All these comments are just exciting me even more for Lonesome Dove. Thanks for watching, Mike!
Awesome! We will have to organize an official start date because it seems there are a few people interested in the readalong. It would be fun to go through this one together I think!
Dune is great, I have a feeling you will love it. The world building is so good The Expanse is a series I want to start next year too As for sci-fi series, i would recommend The Foundation by Isaac Asimov, I have read the initial trilogy but there are more than this. A word of warning it is classic sci-fi so plenty of men in rooms talking but still one of my favourites
You’re the second person who recommended this, and I already own it! So there’s a good chance I will start this one at some point rather soon. Im really hoping to like Dune but I’ve read so little sci-fi that my barometer isn’t great yet at telling what might and might not work well for me. I don’t think I’m going to dislike it though. Do you have any specific plans for The Expanse? Or just want to start and don’t know when?
@@ColinsCornerYT no specific plans for The Expanse but have the first book on my shelf so ready to go whenever. For some reason I think you have read three Three Body Problem but might just be making that up! 😂
Great video Colin! I’m really late watching this, so hopefully you’re feeling much better by now. Something Wicked has been on my list for a while. I didn’t enjoy the Road, but I hope you like it. 😊
Funny enough, we were watching each others videos at the exact same time! I’m watching your top 10 video right now! I am feeling much better, thanks for the well wishes. I can’t wait to read Something Wicked, so many people seem to absolutely love it. I will be interested to see how McCarthy ends up working (or not working) for me. Okay awesome! I might try and organize something with my channel and the discord and see how much interest there is for C&P or Dune! I feel both of these works would be great for conversation. I can’t wait to finally read Lonesome Dove. It is one of the books that seems to be most loved by most people that read it.

The Road is more accessible than Blood Meridian, beyond the general sound of McCarthy's prose they are very different so liking one is no guarantee you like the other. Awesome, thank you so much for the recommendations, Raf! I have heard of Alastair Reynolds before by name, but don't know anything about his series which is exciting. I will certainly look into both Revelation Space and The Culture and add them to my sci-fi list. Glad to hear you enjoyed The Expanse, it seems like most people I know that read it have enjoyed it to varying levels. Thanks for watching!

I love how you are holding up 6 fingers in the thumbnail while talking about your top 10 😂 I'm excited to read A Spear Cuts Through Water with everyone!
Haha that is funny, although I meant it as ‘24 for the new year! 😅. Glad you’ll be joining us for the read along, it seems like we will have a lot of people to discuss with!
@@ColinsCornerYT oooooh! That makes sense! I'm just dumb 😂
@@readingwithrebeccanicole no, not at all! I did not consider your point and it's a good one haha. If you thought it, I'm sure others did as well.
Dune is good. I'm excited for "Spear Cuts..." readalong next year. Woot!
Dune is good seems to be the general consensus haha. And yeah man, glad you're joining us! It's going to be a blast!
The Road was my first and remains my favourite McCarthy
Heck yeah, Rogue. That's what I like to hear!
Hey Colin!
Hey Jake!
I may have bought Red Rising for my husband for Christmas so I could also read it 😂
Oh I've got thoughts on that series... hahaha
Heyyy nice! We are too similar lol. The only Christmas gift I asked my wife for this year was to start Assassin's Apprentice.
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching my friend!
Get WEIRD with it Colin! lol
😂😂
slowly raising my hand when you mention that you haven't met someone who hasn't loved Red Rising lol I did NOT like it
Oh no! You’re the first I’ve heard of people I know…I can’t remember if I’ve heard you talk about why it didn’t work for you or not. But hey, not everything can/will work for everybody and that’s okay!
@@ColinsCornerYT I just REALLY do not enjoy the main character
@@BookishDrummer Ahhh okay. I can see why this wouldn't work well for you then it's certainly difficult if you don't enjoy the main character.
Go away, Jake.
