I would have never caught on to that part unless on a re-read. So I'm glad you shared that. I was wondering about that broken window when Alise mentioned it. I'm with you 💯 where I didn’t connect as much with the characters. But I liked them and rooted for them. The ones I enjoyed most were the adults -- Alise and Leftrin, Sedric etc... The love triangle didn’t bother me. It was part of the drama, and was just something else to add to the constant hardship everyone had to bear. On top of finding food and securing clean water, avoiding acid river water and uncovering treachery. So maybe everyone else's complaints about Rain Wilds had me bracing for something awful. Then when I finally got to RW myself, it was a pleasant surprise that I enjoyed it much more than expected.
I agree with you! I think I've just realized that although it's my least favorite so far in the series, I still really enjoyed it overall. I also connected much more with the adult storylines, but not because I felt the adolescents were written poorly or anything like that. I'm glad that we both ended up pleasantly surprised by RW and we do learn more about some really important aspects of the series overall and I appreciated all of that!
I continue to rethink my original assessment of Rainwild Chronicles. I don’t think I gave it a fair chance at the time because: 1. the overall hatred it gets and 2. I was eager to get back to Fitz. You touch on so many points that make this series so much better than I gave it credit for. Can’t wait to re-read the entire ROTE again and next time I’ll take a little more time with Rainwild Chronicles instead of rushing through it. And as far as the answer to you joke, ummmm….BATTEREDman? 🤷🏾♂️
Yeah I agree it’s the rethinking, I think waiting a month or so before doing my review of this helped me sort through a lot of the events and I realized I liked this series much more than I thought I did. It’s hard not to pay attention to what everyone is saying and pretend it doesn’t affect our reading experience. But overall I think RW was a really fun ride. And that is not the answer I had, but I like that one too! Great guess!
I've read Rainwilds Chronicles 3 times, and I love it. I don't think it gets hate, per se, but it's always everyone's least favorite. I think it's great. I mean, don't tell me you didn't love Hest's ending. Lol. We get so much world-building and lore and easter eggs for the rest of the RotE.
You're 100% correct about all of the awesome lore and easter eggs we get and I was here for ALL of that! I can't wait to re-read this entire series once I finish it to be honest, and I'll be highly anticipating a re-read of RW for sure. I also think you're right about "hate" being the wrong word. Nobody has ever said its bad to me, but I just think it's obvious that it's a lot of people's least favorite sub-series. I tried to convey in this review that although this was also true for me personally, I am in no way insinuating that it was bad or that I didn't enjoy it. I enjoyed it a lot!
Ooooh I love me a good gushy ramble!! Rainwilds actually is one of my favourite series in the RotE (yes, above Farseer and Tawny Man, at least on first read), so I am very happy to see someone giving it some well deserved love! I think it also helped that I tend to enjoy more angsty YA character dynamics in general, so I was eating up all the interpersonal drama haha. Also, I totally didn't catch that detail about the scorch marks that Fitz had left being discovered here in Rainwilds!! I definitely need to do a reread asap, I miss the RotE! 🤩
That’s awesome that this series connected so deeply with you! The characters just had a bit of a different feel in comparison to Hobb’s characters in the first 3 trilogies for me. But overall I really enjoyed my time with the RWC. That’s one of my favorite little moments to have read about! Idk why, but it just stuck out so vividly for me and tied this whole world together nicely. Thanks as always for watching and commenting, Esmay!
The whole ROTE is possibly my favorite book series of all time. I've read them all 3 times and am in total awe of Robin Hobb being able to tie all these story lines together over all these books. How do these authors do it? And I think I read somewhere that Hobb didn't plan all this from the beginning, it just evolved. I love how so many questions were answered in these books plus I enjoyed the little side love stories. I'll definitely be reading them all again some day. Thanks for your thoughtful review.
Wow, 3 times! That’s so awesome. I know someday I will get to at least that amount of re-reads. I love this series so much and haven’t even finished it the first time yet. I am an awe also, and was just talking about this exact thing with a friend the other day! It’s so interesting to hear that this world just evolved for her as she wrote. Thanks so much for watching and commenting as always!
Thanks, Ben! And same here. Glad we chatted just briefly about Blood of Dragons at the end of our discussion of Fool's Assassin as well. I still think it's safe to say that we haven't struck out on any of our reads in this buddy read so far!

Great spoiler review that was nicely balanced! I’m glad we had at least a decent time with this ugly duckling sub-series!
