Pruning Forsythia in Spring & WTH Is This?!

- Spring is the perfect time to prune your forsythia, right after the bright yellow flowers have dropped. But as I looked over my forsythia shrubs, I saw this strange, alien-like round, spiky ball on a branch. And then another and another. WTH is this stuff?!?
Turns out its a fungus, the forsythia phono-sis gall. There is no treatment for it so you want to get rid of this stuff right away because it can eventually kill your shrub.
In this video I show how I'm pruning my forsythia and discuss how my shrub may have contracted this fungus.

This is so helpful! I haven’t pruned ours yet because I have been afraid too... my husband trimmed ours once and killed the bush! This bush is from our last house so it’s special. Your video makes me feel better about trimming it
One other tip: the branches that are in contact with the ground will root and begin a new bush. Prune the low stuff to keep it from spreading.
Unless you want it to! :) I've actually extended this hedge by (purposefully) doing just that. But it's a good point you make. Forsythia are very easy to propagate, and really you don't need to buy a plant at a store. Just take a cutting from the plant of a neighbor or friend and stick it in the ground. It will pretty much root. Thanks for the tip!
You should video when it’s in full blooms
Thanks for the info. I hope spreads.
Soooo wish these and lilacs would grow out here in AZ. Grew up in upstate NY these were my 2 favorite spring flowers. Would love to try them tho if anyone wants to send some..lol
Does it smell good..?
Unfortunately, forsythia does not have much of a fragrance. If you go right up to them and smell the flowers they have a...flower...scent, but nothing fragrant, like say a lilac. They're more a herald of the coming spring as they are one of the first plants to flower with a bright shock of yellow color. Sadly, also, it does fade fast
Thanks you so much for this info..
