  • Arborvitaes are beautiful and make wonderful living fences, however they can become untamed and wild in a matter of a couple years resulting in unhealthy, misshapen trees that are falling over and are truly an eye sore. this video will help you prune your arborvitaes to look so pretty your neighbors will all think you are a professional.

Thank you for this information! I have several arborvitaes (Emerald and Forever Goldie), and pine-type trees (little and big). I lost the top of a little pine tree and an Emerald in the heat of the summer, last year, but the bottom of both have a lot of new growth. Now I know that they will get a new top.

What about a Dwarf ARBORVITAE don't know much about them it's called a dwarf I would assume it would be growing very little and not to it would have reached a certain height and that maxes out I assume tried to find info on it anyways you can trim it as your video shows I assume you could trim the top as well to control the height as well as the with if need be trimming? I look forward to replies and advice about this could it be used for in the garden the rear of the garden.

Wait until they get 8-12 ft. high and branches are 1- 1 1/2" thick along with the main stalks being 4'' in diameter. Do not buy this type of Arb it looks like what some call an American Arb, or pyramidal Arb. There are some darker in color and grow more tightly where the branches as the Arb grows won't fall away from the shrub when snow falls and freezes on it. I live in PA about 40 miles north of Philly and I'm in zone 5. Don't do what the experts tell you...plant no closer than 3 ft. I was told 32". It will take longer to achieve privacy as far as height but not as long as you think because when planted so close they rob each other of the nutrients in the soil no matter what type of Arb your talking.
These Arbs I'm looking at in this video are cheaper but now 28 yrs later, I would never plant them again. I have a fence line with 31 of these Arbs in it...big mistake and planting @ 32" caused slower growing and the overall health of the plant...needed to fertilize more than I should have.

Someone told me it’s called flagging from the cold wind. Any ideas? Also because they are not pines one would not want to use miracid fertilizer,is that true. Your friend Marc from west falls ny

    • @MIgardener

It is exactly from the cold wind. The burn can be prevented by taking burlap and wrapping them. Some are hardier than others.

This is completely wrong pruning unless you are looking for an arborvitae that is very short, more or less the height they are now. The way you are pruning here will allow the main steam to grow and bottom will never fill out properly making the tree look awkward. I have arborvitaes that I planted 7 years ago, never pruned them and they look great, snow falls right off. The pruning you are doing should not be done until the are the height you want them to be.

    • @FastFXS
      @FastFXS 5 років тому +1

    1. It is not necessary to prune arborvitae, certainly not ALL of them
    2. Your first tree is dying due to lack of WATER. You need to water the heck out of emerald green arborvitae, for at least the first 3 years
    3. I planted 35 arborvitae in September 2016 and today-less than 3 years later-they have more than doubled in size.
    4. You need to feed them 2x/yr and water, at least 2-3 times a week for 3 years. It is nearly impossible to over water arborvitae.
    5. Your arborvitae do not look happy or healthy. I get that it’s winter, but still, they should look a lot better than this. They are EVERGREENS, after all.
    6. Why do you keep saying they look beautiful? You shouldn’t be making videos about things you know nothing about.
    7. You are spreading misinformation.
    8. 👎

hello. i have my arborvitae for 2 years already, and they have massively grown for that period. i put minerals twice a year, and water regularly. but the problem is some of them are not straight, its like they continue to grow sideways and they look kinda sad. what could be the problem? to me it seems like the the upper part of the tree is too weak and it just go sideways.

Vlatko.R Are they all growing in the same direction ? If you have shady spots on your property, lots of trees, shrubs, and even grasses will purposely grow toward the direction of where the sun is strongest.

Hi! I’m curious as to whether or not you wrapped your arborvitae with burlap to protect them from wind burn during the winter? I can’t tell if this is evening sun setting or morning sun rising.... keep an eye out for windburn if these are on the West. It will show a similar look to that leader that died on you... mites also display similar symptoms. Just curious! Thanks for posting!

  • @ccdogpark

The biggest mistake I see people make with Arborvitaes is to just let it grow indefinitely
without ever pruning them. Then one day they decide they are wayyy too large and decide to
prune 10 feet off. At that point the branches are so thick they are hard to prune without a
chainsaw. If you let them grow to 20+ feet, they become much more vulnerable to a
windstorm because longer branches act as a lever to break the leaders at their base. Our neighbor
lost his entire 20'+ tree because it was in an area of his back yard that began getting water runoff
from recently cemented neighboring yards and the combination of rain & wind brought the entire
tree down by the roots. At a time when our weather is becoming more violent, it is increasingly
important to prune trees and tall bushes like arborvitae. (We are getting a lot more windstorms
in the ten years since we moved here, and they are also more violent.)
I like keeping our arborvitae at about 8-10 feet tall. Anything larger than that is hard for many
homeowners to maintain. We prune them every 2-3 years, to bring them back down to about 8'.

Looks like bad news to me. Thuja arborvitae and power lines are definitely not compatible with each other. If I may make a suggestion, I would suggest going ahead and trimming them to height hedge you’ll want to maintain them at. If they get much taller before topping, you run the risk of possibly killling them.

Any advice on keeping them from getting too tall? I’ve seen so me really really tall ones, and I’d like to keep mine from getting too tall-and they’re probably as tall as I’d like them to be now.

You can prune the top to keep them a certain height. Just don't prune off more than 8-10 inches at a time then give them a few months to recover.

I planted panicle hydrangeas as hedges along the side of the property, just need to prune and fertilize, preferred, not required. A lot more beautiful and less to worry

They probably need water... Arborvitae require a lot of water as they have shallow roots.
