I haven't read Woolf since high school. This was a great reminder to pick up her work again. I remember reading excerpts from How to Read a book and making a grand argument in class about reading for pleasure and not for writing papers 😅 I've grown since then 😁
I really enjoyed hearing her accents, I wish there was an audiobook of one of her works in that accent I suspect her writing will be beautiful in the language in voice that was probably in her head. I love how she said old.

We had to read Mrs Dalloway at university and it became my most hated novel. Then I re-read it for a challenge for BookTube and quite enjoyed it and revised my opinion :D

I have a touch of a Woolf obsession so delighted to see you talking about her now. She is an author who speaks directly to me when I read her. I really like the structure of this video. The intro was very interesting, how it lead to the subject in a roundabout way. Admittedly I have not read any Virginia Woolf and do not knowing anything about her or her books. So this will be a true learning experience. I also loved hearing the excerpts of the interview. If I remember correctly, she had kind of a messed up childhood...I could be making that up, have to look, but I wonder sometimes how all these things end up coming together in art.

Oh! Great question! Though The Waves seems to be a lot of people's favorite, it is very experimental. Whereas a short novel like To The Lighthouse still has her experimental style and stream of consciousness, it is not as heavy and easier to get into for someone that is not as familiar with her work. In my opinion, To the Lighthouse is a perfect place to start. 😊

Yeah, I still struggle with a lot of stream of consciousness novels that came out at this time. A lot of it reads as poetry that one can appreciate, but it can be a little much at times. 😊

I am also an alumna of KCL - one of the campus buildings is named after her. But, even so, I’ve never read any Virginia Woolf! 🙈I’ve avoided her work because of her famous stream of consciousness style - a structure of writing that I have never really enjoyed! But is that all of her work or just specific novels? Is there a particular work you would recommend for me to try?
Sorry for such a late reply, I have fallen behind! But yes! Her novel Orlando is less of the stream of consciousness. It can still be complicated here and there, but most people agree it is her most accessible work. 😊
Having only read one of her books and absolutely hating it, I read Virginia Woolf by Hermione Lee to see if I would at least like the author. That would be no. But Lee did a great job writing about Woolf. I try to give an author three tries, so I have two more books to read by Woolf. We'll see if my opinion changes about her writing. However, having read the biography, I have found out most of her writing wasn't creative, so much as just writing about her friends. 🤔
You are for sure not alone in not liking her work. It really is a specific taste. And that is actually true--I never really thought about that--she did write a lot about the people she knew. 🤔

I am also an alumna of KCL - one of the campus buildings is named after her. But, even so, I’ve never read any Virginia Woolf! 🙈I’ve avoided her work because of her famous stream of consciousness style - a structure of writing that I have never really enjoyed! But is that all of her work or just specific novels? Is there a particular work you would recommend for me to try?
Sorry for such a late reply, I have fallen behind! But yes! Her novel Orlando is less of the stream of consciousness. It can still be complicated here and there, but most people agree it is her most accessible work. 😊

Having only read one of her books and absolutely hating it, I read Virginia Woolf
by Hermione Lee to see if I would at least like the author. That would be no. But Lee did a great job writing about Woolf. I try to give an author three tries, so I have two more books to read by Woolf. We'll see if my opinion changes about her writing. However, having read the biography, I have found out most of her writing wasn't creative, so much as just writing about her friends. 🤔
You are for sure not alone in not liking her work. It really is a specific taste. And that is actually true--I never really thought about that--she did write a lot about the people she knew. 🤔

I have only read parts of her diaries, but have never found actual copies. I will have to order them! And totally! Actually, the video you put out yesterday really goes well with the modernist series I am trying to put together!😊😎
