Just finished 'The Fall'. My first time reading Camus, loved it. Very thought provoking, a little above my level but going to start 'The Plague' next. Thanks for taking the time to explain it for the 'Plebeians' of the world 😂
This is my favorite novel by Camus, and to see you have done a review on it made my day. The quote you have at the beginning- ‘Truth, like light, blinds. Falsehood, on the contrary, is a beautiful twilight that enhances every object.’-is so great. The video quality was excellent, as was the editing and cuts, and you had me laugh aloud many times. I thought you wonderfully described how the “laugh out of nowhere” slowly developed into an obsession, a laugh which perhaps resulted from his repression of the memory of the suicide he ignored. I also loved how you tied everything into Kant and ended on the great question, “Is the examined life worth living?” In fact, if we’re all hypocrites, the examined life might always be “the confessed life,” which changes the question: “Is the confessed life worth living?” And this could beg us to ask ourselves, “Could I live under the weight of my own judgement?” A hard question to answer, hard and heavy. Anyway, well done!

Oh! I’m so glad you did an analysis on The Fall! Oh Camus…so optimistic…like Kierkegaard 🤣 The first time I read this it didn’t quite click, because I think I was reading it at face value. Now that I watched this video I’m like, “Ah! It makes so much sense!!” Now I want to reread it again. @@MILE011 Great question! There are many themes in The Fall, and what rings throughout is the theme of hypocrisy in a world, or life that is ultimately absurd. Clemence, the narrator, engages in conversation that forces introspection-who he believed himself to be (or who he sought to be), and who he actually was becomes blurred to the point that any identification of self is impossible. A good paragraph that expresses this can be found on page 119 of the Vintage International edition, where he states: "Don't lies eventually lead to truth? And don't all my stories, true or false, tend toward the same conclusion? Don't they all have the same meaning? So what does it matter whether they are true or false if, in both cases, they are significant of what I have been and of what I am? Sometimes it is easier to see clearly into the liar than into the man who tells the truth. Truth, like light, blinds. Falsehood, on the contrary, is a beautiful twilight that enhances every object." Here we are given a great example of his paradoxical nature, which he has come to realize after self examination. One could even argue that Clemence is giving justification for his hypocrisy. Despite its paradoxical nature, hypocrisy reveals man's deeper vocation and the psychoanalytical nature of desire.
Very interesting video, thanks for talking about it and sharing your thoughts. It is how any dialogue should be. And I felt a part of one during this video. Reading 'Notes from the Underground' by Fyodor Dostoevsky followed by 'The Fall' is a thought-provoking way to think about both books. Like any book, they can be syntopically read. But, I believe Camus drew a lot of his stylistic writing and themes from Dostoevsky. I had multiple flags while reading the fall of the terms or nuances from The Underground but used them in a way to show Camus world view.
One of the things I will never regret is subscribing to your youtube channel. You represent Literature in such a simplistic and humorous way... the philosophy in literature is not something everyone identifies especially where I am from.

Oh! Absolutely! Like all novels like this one, the story itself is less relevant that what it is being communicated. It would be difficult to spoil it--you would very much like this one. The novella is named The fall which allures to both the fall of the lady in black from the bridge and also that of Camus' own realisation of his fall from the morally high pedestal he thought he had justifiably occupied all these years. I am planning to read The Stranger this week sometime. 😊
Yes! That is very true--and, there is a third reason for the title. There is a lot of religious symbolism in the book, where Paris is representative of heaven, and Amsterdam hell, The Fall also represents the "fall of man." 😊😎

After I graduated from college, I saved up money and went on a trip to Europe to both Paris and Amsterdamn (as well as touring around England), so I bet I would find this story even more interesting than just taking in the philosophical themes. Amsterdam was wild... :)

There's way too much that I want to comment on this, that I will limit myself. Was Camus mentioning the Pont de Bir-Hakeim bridge? While you were talking about this part, it reminded me of the movie Inception and the bridge scene. Also, we know our sins better than any person. The examined life is absolutely worth living if the same mistakes aren't made and life is improved. The people who refuse to examine life live in cognitive dissonance. They can't handle the truth. Great video.
I am not sure what bridge it would have been, I don't remember him mentioning it. If he did, I missed it. And I do agree, as I do not agree with a lot of Camus basic premise. But I can see where he is coming from IF one were to accept his philosophy as a whole. 😊

I think I need to reread Camus. _The Fall_ sounds interesting. I love stories about terrible people who do things for their own selfish reasons. Are you surprised? 🤣 I judge myself all the time. Maybe I could relate to it. I think I was too young for Camus when I read him. I've read _The Stranger,_ and _The Plague._ I don't really remember them.
I can definitely see you getting along with this book haha Though, there is no real story, but mainly a bunch on monologues, it is worth knowing exactly what it is before getting into. If you do decide to read it, it is a short book in page length, but a long one with thought process haha.
Because stranger got the life experience and I think stranger don't see what happens with him .. But Both collectively Make him burn .. And one who make stranger to do this is his partner

Another great one. I’ve only read The Plague and that certainly made me want to read more and I picked up an Everyman edition with a few of them in there. Hope one of them is this one. Fairly sure it is, actually!
The Plague has definitely become his most popular work after these last two years haha and it is a good one for sure. But I do much prefer this one and The Stranger. I think I would even take his play "Caligula" over The Plague. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on his work, for sure! 😊😎

There's way too much that I want to comment on this, that I will limit myself. Was Camus mentioning the Pont de Bir-Hakeim bridge? While you were talking about this part, it reminded me of the movie Inception and the bridge scene. Also, we know our sins better than any person. The examined life is absolutely worth living if the same mistakes aren't made and life is improved. The people who refuse to examine life live in cognitive dissonance. They can't handle the truth. Great video.
I am not sure what bridge it would have been, I don't remember him mentioning it. If he did, I missed it. And I do agree, as I do not agree with a lot of Camus basic premise. But I can see where he is coming from IF one were to accept his philosophy as a whole. 😊

I think I need to reread Camus. _The Fall_ sounds interesting. I love stories about terrible people who do things for their own selfish reasons. Are you surprised? 🤣 I judge myself all the time. Maybe I could relate to it. I think I was too young for Camus when I read him. I've read _The Stranger,_ and _The Plague._ I don't really remember them.
I can definitely see you getting along with this book haha Though, there is no real story, but mainly a bunch on monologues, it is worth knowing exactly what it is before getting into. If you do decide to read it, it is a short book in page length, but a long one with thought process haha.
The Fall sounds so good I really wanna read it asap!

Another great one. I’ve only read The Plague and that certainly made me want to read more and I picked up an Everyman edition with a few of them in there. Hope one of them is this one. Fairly sure it is, actually!
The Plague has definitely become his most popular work after these last two years haha and it is a good one for sure. But I do much prefer this one and The Stranger. I think I would even take his play "Caligula" over The Plague. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on his work, for sure! 😊😎

This is actually an incredibly good point that, despite how many times I have read this little book, never considered. But you are absolutely right.
