Steve Vai - Reminiscing About Randy Hansen

  • I asked Steve to send my friend Randy Hansen a message for his birthday (12/8/2020). I did it through Cameo because Steve donates 100% of his Cameo earnings to charity. Wow…and what a gift it was and quite the surprise for Randy. As I’ve told anyone that’ll listen to me, “Steve is a better person than a musician and that says all you need to know about him…and that’s amazing…because Steve is one of the greatest musicians to ever walk The Third Stone From The Sun!!

“Steve is a better person than a musician" You hit that one on the head. I met him back in early 2000's and spent about 15 minutes talking to him. What a caring, sincere person devoid of ego.

I’ve had the absolute privilege of getting to know Steve through various interactions over the last 8 years and he’s truly one of the most grounded, genuine, and caring individuals around. His wife and sons are the same way too…so you know it’s genuine.

i saw randy hansen back in the 80s and he did a back flip onto the stage and never missed a note the most amazing thing i ever saw at a concert!

Jimi never did back-flips. Ritchie Blackmore had roadies push his Marshall stack from behind,
so he could run up to it, put one boot up between the cabinets, a gap with wheels on, and do a back-flip.
He was in the air when he played the first three notes for the solo in Sweet Child in Time.

I came so close to seeing Randy Hanson in Montreal in 1979 his first time here. But the crowd line went up the street and around the corner and so many people I knew there was no way I would get in so I left. With Randy we can all experience Hendrix !

As much as I admire him, Steve with all his might could not stand a chance next to Randy on any blues or even Little Wing to be on par, Randy is not just a great guitarist but completely awesome combining guitar mastery and singing and stage persona morhping into a surreal time capsule experience.

Meet Randy 74 we were both 19 partying at sound man Herb Smiths house on Alki beach getting high & playing pool about 2yrs later a friend says you have to check out this guy doing Hendrix so me & my girlfriend at the time went to the Flightline tavern & this guy doing Hendrix kept jump on our table playing right in front of us , after a while my girlfriend asked me do you know this guy ? I said I don't think so.He had makeup & a afro wig , in between sets he came up to me & said John it's me Randy, just blew me away ,he is by far the best it's not fair to call him an impersonator even the Hendrix family have given him their good grace to keep doing what he's done for decades he's more popular in Europe than the US.. Happy Birthday brother I hope our paths cross again 🎂🎉

Nobody channels Jimi like Randy I hope he comes back to Dallas guitar festival I missed it would love to see him.
Steve I saw you with Frank at the armadillo world headquarters you were not feeling well food poisoning I believe and you never missed a beat nobody could tell or know how sick you were so in fact you delivered like the postman..
The last time we spoke in person you had your Son at G3 in Austin....
Mike was with you on 2nd guitar and keys and he was walking around playing the room unplugged with the green strat and I said what are you doing your not plugged in and he said oh marking my territory If I play here and there and all over the room at sound check then ive already played there so im not nervous.. Mike never missed a note or a beat either and that was so cool to tell me cause I get the willies playing in front of crowds So if I ever do I walk around and play in every inch of the place before the show to tell myself ah ive already played there its gonna be ok relax.
Frank Zappa smiles down on you Steve you made him proud enough to take you on the road and play the impossible.
If I ever get the chance to speak to you again id ask about position of where the notes are to be played as I did in fact continue on to learn how to read music because of Frank though not very good I can read but I get confused as to where its to be played on the neck.. Thanks for the laughs and inspiration to become better at this thing of ours called music.
May the year bring you and your family great joy...

I saw Randy on Halloween night, 1980 at the Seattle Center Arena. His non-hendrix solo album was new. Those songs and that show is in my top 5, and at 58 I've seen everyone. Randy's show was on par with the VH w/Dave shows.

Spot on. And other famous guitarists are blown away by Randy too. EVH, Blackmore, Satriani, Zakk, and more have gone to see Randy over the years and are completely blown away by his talent. Randy is an absolutely amazing guitarist, musician, entertainer, and artist. If you haven’t already, you should checkout his Funtown album. It was released in 2016. All original songs. Phenomenal stuff!!

Randy is so good at what he does it would be scary even for a guy like Steve Vai to get on stage and Parley with randy on some Hendrix Tunes. I would do it as long as I can wear one of Wes Borland's masks so nobody knows who I am (lol)!

Fuk Hue, you should check out my channel. I recently posted a video of Steve and Randy meeting / playing together for the first time, which was just last November in celebration of what would have been Jimi’s 80th birthday. It was an insane Experience for me to witness and hangout with both of them all day. Also, I posted a video short on my channel of Randy showing me how it’s done jamming in my basement.

Baron, Randy used to wear full on makeup back in the late 70s early 80s to look exactly like Jimi and it was confusing to many when he stopped wearing it. Steve meant nothing by the comment other than that. I was backstage with Randy and Steve on 11/27/2022 after they played together and met for the first time. Randy was explaining to Steve how he actually used to paint his face (as an artist) to look as close to Jimi as possible…and thus the origin of the comment. Randy also told me a story about when he met Jimi’s dad (Al Hendrix) for the first time after a show when he was still wearing the makeup and it was so convincing that Al kept on calling him Jimi.
