Tbf we don't actually know much yet about what they can do. Half of Iran's ballistic missiles failed without needing to be intercepted, so they actually let 7/65 through. That's a success rate of 89% against functioning missiles. But it could actually be worse depending on the distribution of decoys to actual warheads since their AD claims to ignore decoys.

The lines coming out of US and Israel is there were about 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and between 115-130 ballistic missiles. All the drones and 25 out of 30 cruise missiles were intercepted by a coalition aircraft interdiction line before they reached Israel, Iran had warned all its neighbours about its two targets in Israel (Negev and Nevatim airbase, the origin of the attack on its Embassy compound in Damascus) and the timing of the retaliation 72 hours in advance and had asked Turkey to pass on those details to Israel as well as through back channels to the US in Switzerland which allowed the coalition aerial interdiction line to be formed as they knew the target and size of the retaliation. 50% of the Ballistic missiles failed at launch or in flight however 9 got through the US fleet/Israels air defences with 5 striking Nevatim airbase and 4 hitting the Negev base causing minor damage including cratering a disused runway, destroying some empty storage buildings and damaging a C-130 transport. No US carrier aircraft were involved with only land based aircraft taking part but US ships shot down 6 ballistic missiles, in addition the US said it destroyed 7 drones and 1 ballistic missile on the ground before they launched (presumably from Yemen). The US said its aircraft accounted for around 80 drones (up from an earlier estimate of 70) and its ships intercepted 6 ballistic missiles along with a couple of interceptions from its Patriot battery in Erbil. Jordan and UK haven said how many they intercepted and the French participated in the defence in a non-combat role as well. Israel has said it alone discharged $1bn worth of interceptors during the attack.

You can deploy the AIM-120 in the same manner as an AIM-7. You HAVE to maintain a target lock from the launching Aircraft. For the record, I was an AMMO and Weapons Tech(Load toad) in the USAF. I'm very familiar with these systems. The 120 was an evolution of the Sparrow so it could have the option of being fielded with out the launching A/C having to maintain a lock yet still retain it's AIM-7 like functions. Either DCS isn't modeling this correctly or these guys are using them wrong.

But it also has a tremendously smaller warhead than the V1 (only 50 kg compared to the V1's 850 kg), and it is much slower (only 115 mph top speed compared to the V1's 400 mph).

I wonder if the older sparrow missiles would not perhaps have been better suited for such a scenario. They DON't have a mind of their own and thus will only go after a target that the mother plane has got locked up. In the case that the lock is lost they won't\can't re-acquire a random target, thereby eliminating the chance of them going after friendlies on their own. Unless, the PILOT actually makes an error and locks the wrong target...
    OR
Change the rules of engagement... EVERYONE HAS to hold fire while flying AROUND the drones by a radius of at least 5 miles. Then, slot-in behind the drones and take them out from the rear. Planes already at the rear of the drones should fly in a "line-abreast" formation (roughly), to avoid anyone from going out in front on their own. If anyone does go out in front of the others on his own, he only has himself to blame...
Certainly doable and having everyone coming in from the same angle (i.e. from the rear of the drones) is probably the safest way to do it. It would also ensure that no-one gets in the line of fire from the IRON dome and the targets.

IRL the AIM-120 can be actively guided(up to 6 of them) by the Launching aircraft so it doesn't switch targets IVR. BVR can be a Crap shoot if friendlies are out there. Trick is the launching Aircraft NEEDS to keep a target lock, not switch away. The moment the launching aircraft stops guiding it like it's an AIM-7(passive radar only) it starts aiming at the closest thing it can find with the biggest radar signature. Not sure if DCS models this behavior or these guys are deploying them incorrectly.

I am noting a lot of failures from Fox 3 missiles here. On Ate Chuets' debrief of the actual attack, he noted that airplanes sent up to destroy the incoming stuff were equipped with AIM7 Sparrows. He commented that the Sparrows, probably because they rely on the planes' more powerful radar, had a higher PK on drones and small targets. Maybe you should try it out? Also, because they are guided by the mother plane for a higher duration, you might have less friendly fire?
Finally, fun fact I got from his video: princess Salma of Jordania might have participated in shooting down drones in her F-16. And... She didn't ruin her F-16 like Cap did. ;-)

I was watching a video earlier today, it was from 2016 and it was showing US military testing drone swarms deployed from fighter jets.
I think thats the future, why fire missiles when you can just send up a swarm of flying AI hand grenades.... If a missile misses, its scrap metal... if a drone misses, it just flys home and recharges.... and you can get 1000 of them for the price of your basic missile.
I'm happy to see the military types were on the ball, I only really thought of drones as a useful weapon in about 2018.

I think the in-game ABM defence is overstimated and this video kinda prooves it too.
IRL ~120 BM were launched from Iran, but as US officials said about half of them failed on launch or during flight and didn't have to be intercepted. Also we know that 7 of them leaked through. So 7/60 leaked from a combination of Aegis SM3, arrow 2 and 3 and patriots in Iraq in one of the most well protected airbases on earth with layered AD from an attack that was expected and everyone was on 100% alert and ready for it.
Here in game 3/120 leaked and the simulated missle was DF26 which definetly is much harder to intercept than anything Iran fired on Israel yesterday. Also on many occasions in the game senarios you simulate "surprise attacks" so that would bring interception rates even lower. So yeah...in order to make the game more realistic some parametrs of the balistic missles and the ABM defence have to be tweaked.
