It is really sad that he won’t come back, but I fully understand why. Writers need some independence and when they are not heard for the drone of the Disney it makes their work come out not being what they wanted or expected it to be.
He's a script doctor, a very good one, but nothing more, nothing less. The Empire Strikes Back was 100% George Lucas's story, his vision, his movie. Laurence Kasden wrote the screenplay for Lucas, that's what Kasden is very good at. This does not make him a creative storytelling visionary. He translates an established story, tightening dialogue and scenes into nice flowing scripts. The Force Awakens and Solo were very mediocre movies that I think damaged his reputation and proved his limitations.
Not to mention that Ruin Johnson is incomparable to George Lucas. The prequels were a labor of love. The Last Jedi was RJ getting everything he wanted: a polarizing Star Wars movie.

Sure, it's great to diversify, but when you make the best pizza in town, what's wrong with churning out a pie now and then? And yes, I agree with Kasdan. Someone important should have died in Return of the Jedi -- but NOT Han Solo. It should have been Lando, who both sacrifices his life to save the rebel cause but also pays the price for betraying Han in Empire.

That largely was Kershner and Kasdan likely with influence from Kurtz and Kasdan, I'll read up on it in the near future and have a better answer for it
A long time ago I read somewhere it was Kurtz that was very interested in the spiritual side of the force and wanted to explore that more. After Kurtz left Star Wars those themes never really got back in Star Wars. Certainly not in the prequels where Yoda became a jumping frog bringing his little lightsaber to town as George called it... (a great warrior? War does not make one great) and having Liam Neeson blabbin about a Midi-chlorian count that reside in all lifeforms... I am almost certain that my favorite part of Star Wars (the Dagobah scenes) did not come from Lucas himself. But who knows.

Raiders was good because of Lucas. Raiders early draft transcripts really exposed Kasdan as being a hack who can only work under others. Also the reason Temple of Doom wasn't as well receives as Raiders was Spielberg had more influence on that one, and some of the stuff Spielberg pitches for Raiders that Lucas rejected, he later used for Temple of Doom. Lucas is a great creative lead and he knows when other peoples ideas are good or not. For example you don't need Jabba in A New Hope because all the information is given in the Greedo scene and not seeing jabba for two films leaves a mystery that pays off in Jedi. George could not be convinced... he just wanted that old scene shoved back in there to see if he could bring a CGI Jabba to life. Different focus.

Lawrence Kasdan is a hack, he would have made the prequels worse if he was involved. I am glad he had nothing to do with them. @@brucewayne1662 I'm so glad you brought up the reuse of Ralph McQuarie and Colin Cantwells designs, it's really never talked about, Disney dredging up all the designs Lucas rejected and putting it in Rebels or TROS or their other turds. McQuarie is another one of the overrated secondaries that all the manchildren love to praise. Sure the stuff that got into the OT was great, but that's because George Lucas acted as a curator, McQuarie and Cantwell came up with so much, and Lucas had the taste and ability to sort their good designs from their bad, and as a result of Lucas's curation, everything thinks that those two artists are godlike. But really, take a look at McQuarie's art for how Coruscant was meant to look and it's compeltely soulless in comparison to how it appeared in the prequels. Not only that, but a lot of his concept art for planets and worlds was really bad, artificial and flat and felt lifeless. He was only really good at very specific things. I think the really underrated and more versatile concept artists who worked under Lucas's direction are Doug Chiang and Ryan Church. The prequels had some absolutely amazing designs by those two, and all their rejected designs that later got repurposed in The Clone Wars still looked fantastic and original, compared to the knock offs that Disney is picking up. But back to my main point. Lucas is a great overseer, he's the glue that leads other creatives of various talents all in one direction guided by him. When these other creatives go off and do their own thing without Lucas at the top, it's never as good or as memorable as their work under Lucas. John Willians, Lawrence Kasdan, Irvin Kirshner, Marcia Lucas, Ralph McQuarie, all their best and most memorable work was when they were working UNDER the direction and curation of George Lucas. HE is why THEY were good. Star Wars just doesn't work without Lucas. Even the great Dave Filoni had moments where he faltered in Rebels without Lucas there to guide him.

If you watch the making of the Original Trilogy John Wiliams was contracted because of their vast experience. The man is a legend and along with his compositions was well established before Star Wars. Now on Dave Filoni. He is a person who is very knowledgeable on George Lucas's concepts on the Force. I respect him as a showrunner and person who understands Star Wars Lore (especially the Living and Cosmic Force as components to the Force as we know it). However he was definitely learning under Lucas and he was a sort of apprentice to George, and when he eventually created and produced his own 'independent' animated show, it wasn't that bad. I think trying to give an absolutely iconic 70's bad boy character like Han Solo, a tepid, pc, 2018 backstory was a mistake. Shouldn't have been attempted. Solo should have been about his, Chewie and Lando's eldest kids - being too like their Dads for their own good and going off and getting into mischief or something.
Given time, Kasden is probably the best of the writers along with Lucas. It shows that three of the four films were huge successes. He is just got tired of doing it, and he did Solo to launch his son's career as a writer... which of course everyone knows did not work out.

I doubt kasdan would have made the prequel better hell TFA isn't a bad movie I would agree with you on that part but TFA can't stand alone as a movie on it's own it really need it TLJ to be successful which it wasn't and in my opinion phantom menace was better than TFA and Solo

Lawrence Kasdan is a hack, he would have made the prequels worse if he was involved. I am glad he had nothing to do with them. George obviously was reigning him in on ESB and ROTJ where he was just there to smooth out dialog, once he was given free reign it quickly became apparent the guy is unoriginal and trite. The Force Awakens is BY FAR the worst Star Wars film, it is worse than TLJ, it is worse than AOTC. AOTC and TPM are both head and shoulders above TFA. Lawrence Kasdan is a talentless hack almost on the level of JJ Abrhams. I am glad that he got what he deserved and went out with a failure, and that his own Star Wars film turned out to be the very first flop. It really proves that George and George alone is what made Star Wars great. Not Kasdan, nor Kirshner (never made a good film aside from ESB), not Gary Kurtz (it's just sad some people even attempt to give a producer, someone in charge of finances and timetables credit for why the OT had a good story, the hate for Lucas by whiney manchildren is insane), and certainly not Marcia who edited ONE (1) scene out of the entire saga yet gets such massive ammounts of praise. George Lucas is why Star Wars is good. Kasdan is a hack who is known for nothing else aside from the times he was allowed to work under Lucas's guidance.
I am so glad this hack wont come near Star Wars again. Now to get JJ barred from touching this Saga ever again. He's even worse. TFA is far worse than TLJ.

The only good thing about TFA is that it destroyed the myth that Lucas had nothing to do with the execution of EMPIRE and JEDI, and it destroyed the myth that it was all the other guys and not Lucas that made Star Wars great. It destroyed the myth that Lucas was challenged on the OT but not the prequels. Nevermind that there is no evidence of this. Its all a fantasy that the 40 year old man children created in their heads. On this disaster of a trilogy they keep desperately pimping out McQuarie's designs left and right and it looks like SHIT.
@@brucewayne1662 I'm so glad you brought up the reuse of Ralph McQuarie and Colin Cantwells designs, it's really never talked about, Disney dredging up all the designs Lucas rejected and putting it in Rebels or TROS or their other turds. McQuarie is another one of the overrated secondaries that all the manchildren love to praise. Sure the stuff that got into the OT was great, but that's because George Lucas acted as a curator, McQuarie and Cantwell came up with so much, and Lucas had the taste and ability to sort their good designs from their bad, and as a result of Lucas's curation, everything thinks that those two artists are godlike. But really, take a look at McQuarie's art for how Coruscant was meant to look and it's compeltely soulless in comparison to how it appeared in the prequels. Not only that, but a lot of his concept art for planets and worlds was really bad, artificial and flat and felt lifeless. He was only really good at very specific things. I think the really underrated and more versatile concept artists who worked under Lucas's direction are Doug Chiang and Ryan Church. The prequels had some absolutely amazing designs by those two, and all their rejected designs that later got repurposed in The Clone Wars still looked fantastic and original, compared to the knock offs that Disney is picking up.
But back to my main point. Lucas is a great overseer, he's the glue that leads other creatives of various talents all in one direction guided by him. When these other creatives go off and do their own thing without Lucas at the top, it's never as good or as memorable as their work under Lucas. John Willians, Lawrence Kasdan, Irvin Kirshner, Marcia Lucas, Ralph McQuarie, all their best and most memorable work was when they were working UNDER the direction and curation of George Lucas. HE is why THEY were good. Star Wars just doesn't work without Lucas. Even the great Dave Filoni had moments where he faltered in Rebels without Lucas there to guide him.

He deserves all the praise just for Star Wars and Indiana Jones, however people such as John Wiliams had SUCCESSFUL track records before George Lucas. If you watch the making of the Original Trilogy John Wiliams was contracted because of their vast experience. The man is a legend and along with his compositions was well established before Star Wars. Now on Dave Filoni. He is a person who is very knowledgeable on George Lucas's concepts on the Force. I respect him as a showrunner and person who understands Star Wars Lore (especially the Living and Cosmic Force as components to the Force as we know it). However he was definitely learning under Lucas and he was a sort of apprentice to George, and when he eventually created and produced his own 'independent' animated show, it wasn't that bad. Many people think that any Star Wars Media under the Disney banner is rendered inherently rubbish, but that cant be further from the truth. Have you watched any Star Wars: Rebels Episode?

Lawrence Kasdan is a legend. He even wrote the first Indiana Jones movie, which is the only amazing movie in the tetralogy in my opinion (the third was pretty good too though).

I think trying to give an absolutely iconic 70's bad boy character like Han Solo, a tepid, pc, 2018 backstory was a mistake. Shouldn't have been attempted. Solo should have been about his, Chewie and Lando's eldest kids - being too like their Dads for their own good and going off and getting into mischief or something.
He should make some Terminator movies maybe. Yolo.

Given time, Kasden is probably the best of the writers along with Lucas. It shows that three of the four films were huge successes. He is just got tired of doing it, and he did Solo to launch his son's career as a writer... which of course everyone knows did not work out.

Han Solo is one of my favorite characters, Im also a big fan of StarWars, so it sounds like im one of the few the enjoyed Solo. Kasdan was a legend in StarWars, and I think he brought some of that old school StarWars feel to Solo, he will be missed.
Key word: was. His work on both Solo and The Force Awakens proves that he was right to exit Star Wars after the Original Trilogy.

I'm sorry dude but The Force Awakens was pure shit. The dialog is crap, the story is crap, the characters are crap.....but because it's Disney and not Lucas, people give it a pass....I nearly walked out of the theatre for goodness sakes. The Force Awakens was treated with "kid gloves" by people because we were all so desperate for a new Star Wars movie. And after everyone watched the film you were not allowed to hate it....until The Last Jedi. Honestly, I'm glad he's gone, because he sure as hell wasn't apart of the solution, and only added to the problem along with his problematic, pansexual Lando inspired son. I have honestly never liked him, and we would have gotten a totally different Star Wars if Lucas had been dumb enough to listen to him.
