@Savi, The reputation of our people can be harmed by beggars and scams, as I heard from a tourist complaint. I’m proud that you spoke out about it.

No one is feeling bad about helping. It just feels irritating for one person to help the whole village.

I had this problem in Battabong at Phnom Sampeau - Bat Caves. I had donated and they kept on pressuring us - even the monks were pressuring us to give more after we have given already. It left a bad impression. Theres a line cross when they take advantage of the situation like that.

That is BEYOND atrocious. You should all come together and petition for them to hire security for touristy areas. That way you won’t have a whole trip completely ruined not just in the exorbitant amount of money you spend to finally get a vacation after working so hard what don’t ya think? 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️
They don’t understand because they don’t work and can’t be bothered to even try and be productive to their own society.
They have no ideas how hard we work to earn these kinds of excursions. They’re very very entitled I have no sympathy, I don’t know what the safety situation is like here but I didn’t know if I had an Indian started the same and starting a petition for better policemen’s of the areas may make a substantial difference considering the bulk of their Academy is supported by foreign travelers, so it’s really counterintuitive they don’t do anything about this.

I got swarmed by about 15 boys at a lake walk in the Angkor Wat park. I escaped, but 3 girls were persistent and I bought postcards from them when we were out of sight of the boys. Crazy. And a bit sad.

I would've ignored them. Luckily for me, im fortunate to speak fluent Khmer. I was just recently there and I turned a lot of beggers down. Not that i wouldn't have donate, i dont have the funds to donate all the time. They can always tell when you're a foreigner, even when you're full blood khmer. People there get this misconception that Americans are always wealthy when that is not the case at all. Yeah the American Dollar is higher than the Riel but thats how we are able to afford to go back to the motherland with such a small budget. We are all struggling, just in different environments. If people think differently then I suggest many people need to be educated about how the world is. Sucks to see our people struggle and starve but im struggling too. Just saying. We got lucky our families immigrated to America, but they don't understand the economy and taxes here as well.

My experience in Siem Reap was similar, being swarmed by groups of children or adults, either selling postcards/small souvenirs or asking for money ... in 2023 ... I did buy a few postcards/souvenirs though ...

They only come when they know that they can get money. If you don't give, they wouldn't bother you.

That’s a bummer! I’m glad I didn’t take my first to that temple on our first visit. I guess i lucked out because I didn’t really experience begging at that level. Which was surprising since I was warn ahead of my trip. Especially since I had a white wife. Our experience been so amazing that my wife said she never met so much amazing nice humans being. She went on to say that our people are some of the nicest people ever. She never once felt like she was looked at or treated like she was out of place. At one point she said here she was the only white person walking by herself in a village and not one person gave her a dirty look. So different than here at home in the US when we had our road trip across the country. She even told me that she could see herself living there. So that gave me hope that when we retire maybe I can return to live in the motherland. We are planning another trip this December.

I wouldn't mind helping out the unfortunate, but the way they ask should be handled better. To be acosted like that is unsettling. The donation boxes at each shrine is fine, just don't follow me everywhere.

You can’t really blame them because people keep on giving. Who wouldn’t want free money. When I watch “Cooking & Traveling with Bong General “ he start bring a big stack of cash to pass out every place he visit. I understand he want to go good but this is the result from that.

I have not experienced the level of aggressiveness and the number of beggars you ran into. With the prasat being the only one at that location it’s likely concentrated all the beggars and sellers to that single tourist attraction. You and your friend were probably not the first or the last ones .
Some experienced Khmer travelers know and expect these things so they plan for it. One Khmer traveler INITIATED the giving, and the amount he gives is allocated in advance. Once he is done, he is satisfied and is firmed not to give anymore without being dissatisfied and rude. One of my tactics is to talk to them as much as possible thereby to get to know them and for some will get tired of my questions and possibly leave. Sometimes it works but other times it doesn’t. When you run from them it likely leads to more of them chasing you. It’s a tough situation, but you can experience this situation at other tourist attractions in any developing country.

I have been to Cambodia before and was in a long term relationship with a Cambodian girl. If your American and speak English you are automatically wealthy. I also think its the culture in general. Each province has their own Buddhist temple and a place of worship. It has become like a business. Constantly handing out gifts and donations to relatives by Cambodians living abroad has become ingrained into the behaviors of Cambodians living in Cambodia. Poverty and corruption is also very prevalent there. Like for instances on the road there would be random stops and if they catch a foreigner that looks rich they will ask for tea money.

They can swarm me all they want. I just ignore them. I wouldn't enable them. It's one of the things you learn and what everyone says to do.
When you lit the incense your mind was not at peace and that was a waste.
I would've used the money giving a bigger tip for service workers.

Yeah I been so many times to places like these wen I go to cambodia, it gets really frustrating so I don't bother going to any temples anymore wen I go , I just visit family and stay out of tourist spots like these, seen it done it ,it gets annoying everytime I just don't say anything and just keep walking, sometimes I ask them to give me money lol, I go to cambodia to visit family and friends only now no temple visit or any kind , I just don't have the patience anymore, so I rather boycott these places , got better things to do then get harassed where ever u go, might seem harsh but it does get annoying , u dint have to give them money, as u see give one all come, so rather not give any from the start,
