Great video! I've done engine swaps before but never a rear pumpkin, I was pretty nervous about it but the video is in depth and makes it look easy! Im doing the same gear ratios swap in my 77 with a 350sbc and a th350 trans, hoping to achieve highway speeds without being at 4300 rpm!
Psst! When driving in the pinion seal stack two pieces of 2X4 on top of each other and cut a hole in the center of it larger than the rubber part of the seal, then place over the seal on to the metal and drive it straight home. Very simple and works very well and won't damage the metal part of the seal.
Funny you say that. Something I considered doing with my original blue luv that had pitting from water. But I had no way to verify gear in trailer on the classifieds was any good.
@@Calaveras32Spcl lol my bad that was a bit jumbled. Saw LUV trailer for sale online. Thought about buying it just to harvest ring gear. Was too big of gamble because I had no way to check gear condition without buying it first
Thank you! Yeah I'm glad I was able to source one myself. This 1975 actually came with 4.56. I swapped in the 4.10, out of my blue luv, temporarily. The 4.10s were bad enough. 4.56 would have been unusable. For my use I'd actually like to have a ratio closer to 3.0 to get my highway rpms down around 2,000 for better fuel economy. Setting this up to be daily driver
@@fabricobbletech No I got lucky and found a parts truck that had a 9 inch with disc brakes. It was a straight bolt in. I did have to put new bearings and seals it it. Now you can just order up a whole new rearend to fit like @AutotechAaron did with his LS Luv
One thing I noticed I forgot to mention is when you pull the axles out be careful not to damage the axle tube seal. After reviewing this video it appears I wasn't even thinking about the axle tube seal when I did it. Hopefully I didn't damage it!
Another xlnt Chevy Luv video. I'm running the same gear ratio in a disc braked S10. I'm running a turbo 350. I don't even want to know my mileage! I'll report back my RPM'S next time I take it out. Thanks!
This NV3500 Transmission has .73 ratio 5th gear. For how I use the truck I wouldn’t mind an even shorter final drive to get the RPMs around 2,000 on the highway for better fuel economy since I daily drive it. Are your rear tires same diameter or larger than stock? Be interested to hear back about RPM
@@fabricobbletech I didn't realize this was going to be your daily driver. That's awesome. I'm running 15 inch in the back. Still rocking the 14's on the front. It's a pure show truck and is used mostly around town. I'm positive its running around 3k at 70 but will verify next time. I'm getting 10mpg but my carb is running very rich right now.
@@fabricobbletech I've had them in a 96 1500, S10's both automatic and manual, and Blazers. They don't seem to care what they're in, it's roughly the same. Damn good little engines though, tougher than a bag of stanley hammers

Yeah the 4.10 are not very pleasant on the highway. I'd actually like to be geared even lower for better daily driver fuel mileage

You use hole saw bits? I don’t think I currently have any deep enough to go cleanly through 1.5”. Could get some though. Good suggestion
Good info. I need to pull the ring gear out of one of these that was converted into a utility trailer.

@@fabricobbletech sorry, I am having a bit of trouble understanding what you meant by the last part.

Great video. You were lucky to find the 3:42 axle, they are pretty scarce these days.

I've had several 4.3l powered vehicles, and every one of them large or small got 16-17 mpg. Didn't matter if they were N/A or injected
I average about 17-18 now. Eventually I may throw on a wideband to see if fuel can be dialed in any more. So far no carb adjustments at all.
