In preparation for covering Dragon*Con this week, we look at "How Fandom Works." Why do fans form active communities that extend their media influence?
BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks
fandoms are totally ruined because of bad staffs and administrators in there
Fandoms are:
it is created on the foundations of dedication to pop culture
built on common interests, beliefs, and values
communities that are built thanks to mass media breaking physical barriers
It allows fans to talk about something they intensely care for
ensures individual a safe-haven to belong and be themselves
Huh weird i was just thinking about the technicality of fandoms. I'm into many fandoms that are video games and anime, namely ones revolving around the bonds between people, psychological meanings, or both if im lucky.
One thing I've noticed about fandoms are phases, for lack of a better word. Growing out of works. Some people can be obsessed with a work long after it's dead, but others move on. The difference between this and let's say, changing cliques in high school, is that you can still relate back to the work if it is ever brought up to you again most of the time.
What's also beautiful about fandoms is that there's always new people joining. It can be long finished, but as long as someone who hasn't been exposed to it, there is always something new.
Fandoms are what allow their respective works to spread out more. Using video games and anime again, if a work recieves enough "hype", it has the chance to get localized or get a sequel or clarification or whatever, adding to the material that the fandom has
Once you find your own group within a fandom, its usually a smooth, personalized sail
Thanks for sharing! You should totally check out Henry Jenkins' books, as he addresses a lot of your ideas. Unfortunately, we couldn't fit them all into a little video like this!
@@BrainStuffShow you know, that fandoms are terrible they have strict staffs and administrators and making the place almost entire impossible except for themselves because they got power over it they abuse their power
@@MTC008 idk where you been at but most of the time it don’t work out like that for me sooo

Every time i go to fandom, it only shows this:

Games Movies TV Video Wikis
Mmmm, a fandom? I really love Tolkien's stuff and Comicbooks, and I do fanart.
David Tennant was also a childhood fan of Doctor Who. He told his parents as a child he wanted to go into acting so he could one day play The Doctor. Not only did he get that wish but he also married the Fourth Doctor's daughter.
Oh yeah that's right! He married the actress who played his daughter on the show. 37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lf1iiiPNI81qbyl43o1_500.jpg
I am a fan of these youtube videos! They are so informative but also entertaining to watch.
Thanks!
whats the difference between a ship and a boat? I want a Brain stuff on that! :D
A ship can carry a boat. But a boat cannot carry a ship.
my list is probably over 1000 at this point, all the way from Sailor Moon to Planet of the Apes (the reboot that I watched for the first time this summer)
So many things... The fandom I'm most involved in though is for Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. (YA book series.) I write fanfictions for it and draw pictures of the characters. I'm also working on a piano suite for them, and currently just need to edit the video.
I'm a fan of... well everything, art, music, movies, tv shows, sports, books, everything. What am I an avid fan of, now that is a little more specific. I'm really into One Piece, Adventure Time and AOT right now, all of which are really fun to me.
Great video! You managed to explain very quickly and easily the gound work on which Fan Studies is built on. I think I will show your video in my "Introduction to Fan Studies" class!
I have always wanted to do fan art/ fan videos/ fan memes etc., but I'm worried that my family is going to think I am weirder + more obsessed than they already think I am.
I know I'm late, but tell them it's simply a source of inspiration ! If they're good parents they will probably be proud of you and what you created ^^
Nobody can just create something like that on the top, everybody needs inspiration.
*casually is like the only person here actually in a lot of fandoms*
Congratulations, you've earned yourself a new fan!
Hummm. Thought provoking. "Fan"--of course, short for "fanatic"--may be of two basic types, each accompanied by their respective spectrum. Specifically, one, often referred to as "face-painters", forms deep psychological dependencies with the object of their fascination; alternatively, the other senses a form of kinship and or mentorship relationship. Their differences notwithstanding, as you point out, they both share the common thread of "community."
You might say that the fandoms that I participate in the most are those where a big part of being a fan is creation of fan products. I'm a photographer and I participate in photography groups where we share the experience of making and viewing photographs. I'm a model railroader and I participate in model railroad groups where, just like with photography, we share in the experience of building, operating and displaying model trains. I am also a philatelist, and I'm finding that one of the things I like most about this hobby is sharing the fun of collecting and building custom albums to show our collections to each other. There are a few other projects I'm working on that fall into this same pattern (such as starting up a new video project for my UA-cam channel); the key for me is that I can do something more than just sit back and I can share my creations with other members of the fandom.
Thanks for sharing your experience Sean! Did you know that one of the first fandoms was actual based around railroads? I wanted to include that in the video, but we were running tight on time.
BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks
Interesting... Would this be part of the connection between the earliest roller coasters and industrial mine railways wherein people jumped into ore cars to ride them down inclines? Or would it be in the coemergence of photography and locomotive-hauled railways such that early railroads were common photography subjects? Or was it just that there were a lot of railfans in the 1800s?
Sean Lamb My impression from the research was that they were turn of the century railfans. I can't remember but I think it's where model trains got started? They were very enthusiastic about how trains worked and were changing the landscape around them.
You guys didn't even touch the world of Rule 34.
Me:*Realizing the fandom I love countryhumans*

🙋
I REALLY wanna start a fandom that I created. Something that I named CRITTERZ basically a bunch of different characters *most of them are beanie boos PLEASE DONT SUE ME TY TwT* all of them have unique personalities! Cc, basically the student council of all the ocs but a pink anthro rabbit. She is a friendly rabbit who protects her friends at all costs. Pixy is a cheerful unicorn who loves her friends more than anything! Candy is 2nd place. Reed just wants to go home, he misses the flower valley, but he is comfortable where he is now.patsy is a rapper that originally went from a duchess in Beverly Hills with her sisters rainbow and princess, to where she is now! Speaking of rainbow, she also went from a duchess, but to a rainbow poodle with several jobs! Princess is still a princess *really lives up to her name* in Beverly Hills. She misses her sisters. Slick is an intelligent fox with a love for science. She uses potions and all that, her goal is to make a shapeshifting slime creature who could be her companion! And there is so much more, I just want to know how to create a fandom so people can see and make art! Whenever somebody makes art, I wanna see it! Not like anybody has made art having to do with me before..... but this is my goal.i really want to make a fandom.
The companies not wanting people to get money off of fan work is understandable. Companies suing people or forbidding people to write fanfiction or draw fanart, etc. is just being a jerk.
I'm a fan of a lot of things, but the main ones I participate in online are "Star Wars" (Specifically The Clone Wars) and "The Chronicles of Narnia." And Batman, too. I was briefly in the "Adventures in Wonderland" fandom out of nostalgia.
* shudder * Capaldi is *the Doctor* not Doctor Who.
now that youybe has unlimited comment space I MAY be able to fit all of them from favorite to least. Doctor Who, Grimm, Marvel (Comics and Cinematic), Arrow, Sleepy Hollow, GoT, Minecraft(Only game because of its large forum/youtube system I like alot), lets just say I have lots of time on my hands
That doesn't seem like an unreasonable amount Jimmy. I like a lot of those things too. Although I clearly need to get on the Minecraft train. Still haven't played it!
BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks what? well u better get started!:) its pretty fun!

Aw! Thanks!
Great points on communities and distance and common interests 🔥
3:10 the same is also true in the video game indestry, as modders end up getting into semi-professional and professional level games development thanks to their mods.
Oh cool. I hadn't read that, but it totally makes sense!
Who would be more likely 2 get out of a burning house alive, a death or blind person
Would the death person want to stay in the burning house? Assuming you really meant deaf and not death, I don't think it would make much of a difference if they were tasked to get out of their own homes. Deaf people and blind people learn the layouts of their own homes just like hearing and sighted people. If a deaf person and a blind person were in an unfamiliar house and they had to get out fast, my guess is the blind person would have a harder time, but that might be a question better asked of Tommy Edison.
Sean Lamb let me restate, who would survive longer in the house if it was burning
I also think it matters if the person is in their own home. Not only is it more familiar, but is it not true that the deaf have flashing smoke alarms (or maybe vibrating?) instead of auditory ones? Most people don't have those. But as long as the blind person knew where the exits were, they should be fine. You can feel that you're approaching fire/hear things crackling. Another thing to consider though is that the smoke would block someones eyesight and I'm not sure how loud fire would be. I know it would crackle, but I've never been in that situation, so I'm not sure. Quite an interesting question though. Also, Sean Lamb I watch Tommy Edison! lol, just thought it appropriate on a video such as this :)
Well a fandom can be an idea. Too not just a show or game.
You basically just asked "Why do people like things?"
31 comments…, that's the 301 club for me too, or did I screw that one up?
What am I fan of? I don't know. I like Star Trek, Harry Potter, His Dark Material, Stargate SG1, Anita Hegerland, Blackmores Night, Dominion (The card game), Lego's main catalogs (got a complete collection since 1982) and some other stuff. I guess you could call me a fan as I collect those things, but I'm not fanatic about it.
awesome video. Made me see Fandom in a whole other light. Being a fan of some things myself made this video more watchable. Liked, Shared and commented haha
FYI Anime is more addictive for fans than anyone knows haha xD
great video guys at brainstuff xD
Thanks Rose! That's exactly what we were trying to do. Glad you liked it!
To begin with, I'm currently in the SU fandom, and particularly in the good side of the SU fandom. The fandom had been in a lot of media flak these days, especially about the suicide controversy. From what I see in my fandom, I believe that in the SU fandom I belong to the 40% of the community which are the Anti-SJW's (People who condemn what happened to a fan-artist), the theorists, fan artists and critics. The 60% is what I believe, the Tumblr side which we, the 40% stay away with.
Overall, joining this fandom is very dangerous but if you stumble upon the good side of the fandom, you're good to go.
Also, is it possible to not be a fan of something in specific (i.e. Adventure time, plato, cosmology) but of a certain feeling, maybe even a rhythm, that I get from various things (a series, a certain person, that one song, that

Kudos for the starfleet logo on the thumbnail
There is a word for people who write 'first' etc, and it isn't fan...
Hey guys. I have a question. How do those audio/visually triggered chills work? You know when you are seeing a super epic film from like Michael bay or Peter Jackson, and you get that tingly sensation down your back. Is it jude me or is that weird?
Hi Max! That sounds very similar to ASMR, which we covered in this video. What Are Brain Orgasms And ASMR Whisperers?
I get those when people scratch chalkboards. I'm not in a chalkboard fandom, though.
You talk more about being a fan then what Fandom is.
I'm a fan of furries, Sonic, Halo, Skyrim (specifically), Sims, Spore, Gargoyles, and Star Trek. The list goes on but not as much as these. My strongest are Sonic and the furry fandom. Both the fandoms of Sonic and furries aren't well liked but overall, I feel welcome and at home there. I am Trekkie but still new to it but I'm lovin' it ^^ The other ones are unknown to me as I mostly am a fan of the content but I should get into the communities more. I want to be more social. Fandoms are fascinating creatures :)
It has been 2 years since you posted. Are you still a Trekie? Which Star Trek series is your favorite?

My only fandom was Harry Potter, now its suddenly miraculous and I can't decide if I still like Harry Potter, even tho I think I love it, because I've never been in two fandom's before🤠🤛
I’ve never been super crazy into anything, I’ve always been a lone wolf, so these “groups” are strange to me, even communties I frequent like say the punk & metal scene, both music that I adore but I don’t loose my shit for things in those communities, also I’m gay, black and latino, so those communties are more about who I physically am then being a fan. I feel like people who are “fans” are like religious people, they need something to believe in to find fulfillment. I don’t agree that that’s healthy but I don’t judge people for there sever interest. Be it remarkably lame.
My mom wanted me to comment so here goes :T

I love how the thumbnail is the stereotypical UA-camr style. I wonder what the message there could be.
I wish we had a hidden meaning behind the thumbnail, but our producer Paul was just trying something new!
