I gotta admit, I am constantly impressed by the grifts. Both on the political/religious side of things, but also the owner of the company I work for. He's been getting duped and scammed for 20 years, and every time a coworker recounts a story, it surprises me at the boldness and innovation of the grift. Much like great modern art, I look at it and say "I never would have thought to do that". I never would have thought to make a "god bless the USA" bible.
I think it's safe to assume that people who list the Constitution & the Bill of Rights as 2 separate documents (or at least those who "accept" the veracity of that listing) have never actually read the 1st amendment (or any other part of the Constitution).
They all know he's full of bs, it's no secret, some accept it and some don't. If I were an evangelical I wouldn't care too much if trump personally believed or not as long as he keeps saying good things about my movement.
They do live in a fairly insular echo chamber and a lot of them are open Christian nationalists but I did read a post yesterday (on Reddit so take with a handful of salt) from someone who says their family, specifically multiple Trump voters, all angry about the Bible hawking. I don't think anything is going to be the one thing that changes voters minds. But anything that does shift Trump voters will have to come from Trump himself and it will probably work on one section of voters at a time. So taking credit for the vaccine rollout lost him some votes, this lost him some votes. Same with his attacks on Nikki Haley. It's going to be a war of attrition with Trump doing the damage to his own campaign all on his own.
Trump could sell his supporters a book with nothing but blank pages and they would buy it. Oh wait, he did that already with his "health plan." Remember that one?

Oh damn, I was in the navy at the same time and they played the that stupid song to us too. Everyone around me was a bubbling mess. Frankly it totally pissed me off. I knew we were being manipulated. I lost so much respect for our military on that day. I was proud to be in the navy during that time and I didn’t need to be manipulated to think so. To this day, I cannot stand hearing that song.
When I was in the corps in the late 80s, there was a band playing that song in a bar just off base. All the shmucks were standing (a few holding the flag) and urging others to stand like it was the national anthem. I just shook my head and got another beer.
A few months after I was discharged from the USN in 1984 after nearly ten years of service , my British wife and I visited my family (for what would turn out to be my final trip to the USA) and I heard this song for the first time. I found it manipulative and sickening. In retrospect, I see my bewilderment at how my family members thought the song was great as evidence of how I'd already got away from the knee-jerk, shallow, unthinking patriotism of so many Americans.

You didn't even touch on the claim that Greenwood's song is 'the most recognized patriotic anthem'. Really? Not the one we sing at every single sporting event anywhere?
If you're gonna listen to songs 'bout America, I recommend 'Fortunate Son' by CCR, 'Born in the U.S.A.' by The Boss, and my personal fave, 'Proud To Be An American' by The Tubes. A trifecta of musical reality right there. Feel free to add more, Internet People.
Over here, in Britland, it's a well known ploy to include USA in the title of your single to get a hit. Supertramp hadn't even been to America when they wrote Breakfast In America (note for pedants...written. It was recorded in LA).
Yes! During the NY Fraud trial, I constantly thought of this line from ‘Fortunate Son’: “ Some folks are born silver spoon in hand Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord? But when the taxman come to the door Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah”
I actually almost despise that song. It is so corny and lame. It is like has been stated here. To stir up patriotism. But what patriotism often does is create a form of ethnocentrism. I see people nearly worshiping a country, a song, a statement, a flag, and I find it undesirable anymore. And I think a lot of it has to do with how the extreme religious right are.
There's a warning from the Bible in Revelation 22:18-19 about adding or taking away from the Word and thus the punishment will be the plagues mentioned in the Bible.
Same for me. Left for Navy boot camp @ Orlando RTC in Aug 87. I remember the song being played more than once. After that, I don't remember hearing it at A school or overseas training etc.
Ah, "American Jesus". For the rest of the planet, "American Jesus" is a completely different character to the Biblical Jesus in everyone else's copy of that mythology book. Like, Biblical Jesus says "resist not evil... turn the other cheek", but American Jesus is loading up his shotgun to defend the Second Amendment. Biblical Jesus says "give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" but American Jesus is keeping his guns to fight the government for tax cuts. Because while the only time Biblical Jesus ever got angry and used violence was against the thieves in the Temple defiling his father's house, American Jesus is a free market capitalist - who loves profiteering - and fights the "communists" in government. Biblical Jesus says "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" and halts an execution, American Jesus has got the popcorn out, while he watches folks fry in the electric chair. Biblical Jesus asks his followers to abandon their possessions and follow him - "make not your treasures on Earth, where they will rust and decay, but make your treasures in Heaven" - while American Jesus is hording all he can, because the American Dream, baby! As Gandhi had it, "I like your Christ, but I don't like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ".
Thanks Matt, long time listener, I appreciated your insight on this matter considering this issue "Christian nationalist" has been a weighing concern for a long time. The ability to generate or duplicate money with the same ol' simple patriotic language combined with religious convictions has been depressing to witness regarding the monetary success that appears to be so easily obtainable. So much to say but just wanted to iterate that your perspective was enjoyed. And relevant.

Oh damn, I was in the navy at the same time and they played the that stupid song to us too. Everyone around me was a bubbling mess. Frankly it totally pissed me off. I knew we were being manipulated. They wouldn't do it if it didn't work, you are the unfortunate minority in not being persuaded by it
When I was in the corps in the late 80s, there was a band playing that song in a bar just off base. All the shmucks were standing (a few holding the flag) and urging others to stand like it was the national anthem. I just shook my head and got another beer.
I agree. I thought the same. USAF 95-99. They probably still play it.
