When I was a kid around 10 or 12 I and another boy spent about 45 minutes alone behind a stage with Joe E. Ross when he visited Lewiston, Maine. Got his autograph, too. He was so kind and sweet and entertaining. There had been a small turn out of children but am glad I stayed behind.

I will never understand why such a truly great comedy was cancelled after only 2 seasons. Every episode is wonderfully written and performed. This show should have lasted, at the very least, five years. And to think that stupid cartoon The Simpsons is in its 36 season. Car 54 Where Are You was genius in every respect. Whoever decided to cancel it should have been cancelled from their job.
Yes, Procter & Gamble originally sponsored the show on Sundays at 8:30pm(et), right after "WALT DISNEY'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR". Carl Caruso was the sponsor I.D. announcer.
There was something like this on the Love Boat when Gopher called Captain Stubbing a jerk and the parrot repeated it and taught it to all the birds in one of the Mexican ports.
Notice how Toody flubs on the line "Lincoln's Gettysburg Address" at around 10:37. This series is really so good. Hard to understand why it lasted only 2 yrs. I think it's the only series that comes close to absurd comedy. It also makes uses of the snowball device so common in the old Laurel & Hardy shorts (Big Business, etc.). Nat Hiken was really a genius. I can't understand why the later Munsters with this pair has become more popular. Unfortunately thus far episodes are not available for that series (only a few features), but from I've seen in the features and clips it doesn't compare to this series. Hiken of course had nothing to do with Munsters. Incidentally, so many actors here became alums, including Ross, Gwynne, Al Lewish, Charlotte Rae & Toody's wife came from the Bilko show as did Ross (even Gwynne appeared twice in Bilko.
“Car 54” was brilliant. Nate Hiken was a genius and there was no end of brilliant ideas in sight. But NBC got too greedy while negotiating for a third season too late for Nate Hiken to go to the other networks. So Season 3 got canceled before it could begin. “The Munsters” aired on September 1964 on CBS and also lasted for two seasons, followed by a feature movie “Munster Go Home” In 1966. According to Al Lewis and Fred Gwynn, “The Munsters” was already running out of fresh material, old gags were being repeated and they were using scripts that had previously been rejected during the first season.
